[Applause] we're here at the heartbeat of stock car racing charlotte north carolina and man is it good to have you back with us today when these drivers suit up strap in and fire up the engines they're in for a grueling day-to-night hot to cold unpredictable 600 miles that truly tests man and machine winning here means a little bit more this memorial weekend at the charlotte motor speedway it is daryl walters jeff gordon victorious austin dylan wins at charlotte brad keselowski the tradition continues it's the coca-cola 600. this memorial day weekend we pause in our solemn remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve and protect the freedoms that we all hold dear and sometimes take for granted among those freedoms the freedom to enjoy going to an auto race on sunday or watching one on tv welcome to the coca-cola 600 on fox and welcome to our booth high atop charlotte motor speedway i'm mike joy here for the 62nd running of one of nascar's crown jewel races hall of famer jeff gordon won it three times including the youngest ever to do so what is it about this race well mike i mean it's a special weekend for our country but it's a very special day for racing we just saw the indy 500 now it's a coca-cola 600 and if you want to be at the top the elite level in motorsports in the nascar series you need to win the coca-cola 600 i couldn't imagine doing it at such a young age in 1994 but it set my career to a trajectory that i could never imagine this is a special race but a very tough one to win now clint boyer you won a 500 miler here in october what's different about your prep for 600 miles tonight at 100 miles and let me tell you something as this track transitions in from day to night that 100 miles is a grueling hundred miles something always happens you're out there your day's going good even if you're running up front you're sitting there going all right where's this right hook coming from boom untimely caution you never know what's going to happen and that's the difference between a 500 miler and a 600 mile we'll race from daytime into the dark of night and this track will change and its racing characteristics will change as well let's dial up old kevin harvick here hey kevin harvick you got us his boy up in the booth i got you buddy man i tell you what it's been a year for the old guys obviously mickelson tom brady started to hear off with the super bowl helio castroneves today now you man after this qualifying run starting top five little bit of light coming out of the stewart haas camp and in particular for you in the ford bunch what do you got tonight hey you know we are we were fortunate to be able to make a whole bunch of laughs in practice so that was nice and and to be able to qualify good to start up front you know how this deal goes though there's a lot of transition as we go through the night the pj-1 wearing off the racetrack says sun going in and out but the good thing is for the old guys tonight is nice and cool in here all right man i know you'll be up front started there hold tight we're gonna be watching man stanford thank you let's have a look at the coca-cola starting grid for today's race all chevy front row kyle larson runner-up last three races last time he did that he won the fourth one from the pole he's due ricky stenhouse junior outside pull his best 600 start and the hendrick twins chase elliott and william byron chase nearly won it last year and william byron had that long top 10 streak yeah let's go to row three just heard from him two-time 600 winner kevin harvick starting fifth alongside him in sixth austin dillon yeah row four right here alex bowman won two stages here led 164 laps last year's 600 and then martin truax two-time 600 winner i'm looking for him to be big tonight daniel suarez ross chastain they will share row number five in chevrolet and ryan blaney kurt bush and the rest of our styling lineup along the bottom of your screen let's check with our crew chief larry mcreynolds yeah mike this race can be a challenge for a crew chief even if your car is up there leading the race you have to be aggressive with adjustments one reason it's a challenge you heard kevin harvard talk about it the track will continue to transition and go through changes now let's look at this little animation map and this shows you one of the reasons this track will go through changes it's because the sun is setting behind the back stretch grandstands and right now the front stretch in turn one there in shade eventually about 8 31 at sunset turn three will still be in the sunshine and then all of a sudden we go under night time you have to be aggressive mike with changes on that race car thanks larry let's get down to pit road beginning with jamie little well since qualifying on saturday all eyes have been on the five of kyle larson he captured the pole in what was a big surprise for his team i talked to his crew chief cliff daniels he said we didn't even think about qualifying we weren't trimmed out we thought we'd qualify 15. now here he is on the pole he won at a mile and a half earlier this season looking to capture his first coca-cola 600 vince for denny hamlin it's been a hall of fame caliber career with 44 cup series wins but never has he won here at charlotte motor speedway oh for 29. in this race a year ago a mechanical issue derailed his chances before he ever got started he told me before he climbed in the car today it still stings the theme for this 11 keep it clean if they can keep it clean for 500 miles they believe they could just get that first win when it strikes 600 miles regan vince brad keselowski won this race one year ago after starting in last place and falling to the rear this year he starts 13th but he said the car lacks a little bit of speed look for him to come to life when it gets dark out tonight and the temps cool off that's when he thinks his car will be best there's the all new toyota camry trd leading the field into turn number three as it rounds out of four it'll head for 600 miles note that the front stretch and turn one are in shade while the back stretch turns two and three are still in bright sunlight i think ricky stenhouse might have given the base card a little bump as they were he did that was fun to watch he's ready to go here is your breakdown this race will be running four equal length stages 100 laps each with a caution break in between field addresses itself to the starting line and the coca-cola 600 is underway kyle larson and chase elliot took off in one and two but stenhouse comes pounding back to battle for second oh yeah look at this we got side by side side by side all the rows back kyle larson was able to break away here carl looked strong but now the battle is on for that clean air and that track position is going to be so important at the beginning of this race chase trying to do a little side draft break free of ricky stenhouse jr but stanhouse is fighting hard on that outside he's gonna get clear right here and that off of four important clear if he didn't get clear they'd stall out right there enabling kevin harvick on the floor the rest of the bunch to get around in there that was a power chevy's one two three harvick fourth and a ford it's the first time that kyle larson has led the 600. he's gonna push you still outside your door still there william byron thinking about going to the inside there to push kevin harvick on by the 47th stenhouse little wiggle there [Music] pretty good slide job by kevin hart yeah i don't know if it's intentional but william byron get up underneath of him as well oh boy how about these guys didn't take them long to get a feel and neither did it for these hendrick drivers one two three right now and in a pretty important field with the traction compound that you can see right there in that shot up on the outside of that racetrack i was curious to see how much grip they would have when they were side by side restart so good so far single file about the top 16 cars back to matthew benedetto actually all the way back to 21st it's kind of been the story of the last you know month or so month and a half with these hendrick cars i'm telling you these guys they're going to have some adjustments here when they get in but this is what's been a tale of the last month not the first time we've seen a team penske car joey logano fall back at the beginning of a race either but watch him fight back it's a long race a lot can happen here but i also think that kind of plays into hey we're setting a car up for a 600 mile race it may not be perfect right here you may want it a little bit loose jeff on the front side of this race so you can be good on the end of these long runs and things like that as this track goes into the night time you know that's going to be a big difference a game changer it's definitely going to transition back at 13 teammates kyle washington side by side and behind them tyler reddick and richard childress that green chevrolet now unlike most oval races we've had this season there will be no competition caution because these teams had a 50-minute practice session on friday and then one lap of qualifying on saturday and i can't wait to see how that plays out in this race because you think about 600 miles how much the car's going to change over that period of time and we saw some drivers some teams really change a lot from that first lap on on track on friday for practice one of them being kevin harvick i thought they were struggling a little bit maybe they're trying some things but boy they flipped it around qualified up front still running up front the top five right yeah absolutely in today's day and age it's a package mike it's not a shock it's not a spring that you're gonna find you know the jews it's a package and those teams were longing for the opportunity to have some practice time yes we had practice last weekend but that was a road course this is an intermediate track that they were geared up for to make some big changes and learn some things and i think they did just that i think ryan newman's learned how his paint looks on the back of corey lejoy's car that was close and corey's learning how hard it is to pass that car been there done that corey good luck kyle larson has just passed 4 000 laps led in his nascar cup career grandstand full of fans here in charlotte great to see fox nascar is sponsored by coca-cola together tastes better with coca-cola 14 laps complete out of the shade down in turn number one and into the sunshine on kevin harvick fourth place leading forward at the moment ford performance track backs ford has won the coca-cola 600 13 times from nelson stacy and 62 to brad keselowski last year rick hendricks four chevrolets are running one two three and eighth position that would be alex bowman what's up there jamie he's kind of been the odd man out all weekend long in practice i talked to him he said my car is terrible it doesn't like me well they tried to adjust on it really didn't find a good handle they were fast they were seventh in qualifying but disappointed that they missed it right now he's saying it's loose it's harsh everywhere and on the splitter in three and four he's made banks selling t-shirts that says nobody likes us i guess that includes his car i like him and i tell you what you just saw the 19 to true x right there you heard what he was complaining about slit and sliding around no grip that car when i'm talking about grip i always look for the 19 of martin truex jr to have just that a lot of downforce out of that camp look for him to be marching to the front and be a factor at the end of this well one thing i'll remind all of us about with alex bowman he's kind of been the odd man out when he won at richmond and when he won a dover so don't count him out yet and that's that's exactly right just because he's loose right now as this track again we talk about it as this track transitions in tonight that could play right into his hand 10th place ross chastain who had such a great run last week on and off the road course at austin texas as he looked to find grip anywhere that was paved he and uh ryan blaney are battling there and kyle bush coming into picture and you know you take momentum any way you can get it you know it's it's not been the type of opening of a season that ross chastain this 42 have been looking for but that good run last week shows him reminds him i still have it i've got the ability i've got a good race car let's try to keep that going here for 600 miles in charlotte jeff you said momentum the only thing that breathes momentum in my opinion is confidence confidence in that race car confidence in your team your driver your communication the decisions you make that confidence is that momentum and that was a big big shot in the arm for confidence for that momentum here comes kyle busch because ryan blamey and ross chastain were going at it maybe he even touched a little bit and he saw the 12 of ryan blaney jump up the racetrack and then here come the 18 of kyle busch to try to make a move telemetry in the lower left the yellow dot is the car that we're riding with the white dot is the race leader probably nobody has missed practice more than kyle busch we'll see it today he can take advantage of that 50-minute session on friday to have his car dialed in for 600 miles there's a big slide job there from blainey he had to lift out of the gas and now they both got around look at kyle bush thread the needle right there jeff i'm telling you that was a good move i like that [Laughter] i think kyle busch liked it as much as you did here's another look at it well they still been battling it out you see ryan blaney trying to side draft get ahead of the 42 which he does a good job up but the front end i think took off on him he went up the racetrack had to bail out of the gas and open this opportunity up 42. how about that was going to have the help from 18. nah nah he used it side drafted off of him way he goes so what did ryan blaney and company have to say about that [Applause] i think he's referencing kyle bush because how close he was to that you know to that front fender as he made that move and just slid in that small gap to get to the outside of the 42 track position on a mile and a half track like this is so important god bush knows that and hey if there's anybody i set it down there and pre-race if i look for aggression out of somebody you know look no further than kyle busch bush started 18th he is up into the top 10. see this guard of kyle arson right there move up into that traction compound we know that's going to be a factor in this race i look for that to move up more and more and more just like an old third track yes laughing bj mcleod in 34th garrett smithley james davison josh belicky and david starr have already gone left down as we look at 14th place yeah we talked about that traction compound you can see where the racetrack is lighter on that bottom groove and darker in the lane that brad keselowski's in as you put heat into it as more rubber builds up on that group it starts to gain grip but it can also go away so you might see that outside lane right here in the middle of the lane where you'll you'll see there'll be a little bit extra grip but it'll start moving up the racetrack that group should get wider and wider and wider but i'll tell you what eric jones at 43 things failing pretty well right around the bottom right now yeah it doesn't go away it wears out you apply it you know like you would like a paintbrush roll it on there spray it on and that stuff wears off but man it feels good when it's it's right [Music] but kyle bush on a tear he just raced past alex bowman into ninth place running lap times right even with the race leader kyle larson has led every one of 25 green flag laps so far in charlotte [Music] no capacity restrictions have a look at this crowd at charlotte motor speedway build it up for memorial day weekend it's quite a weekend of racing it's been kyle larson has led everyone of 31 laps he has a lead of almost two seconds on chase elliott let's check with larry mack for tonight's credible.com race strategy well mike with four stages 100 laps apiece it's kind of business as usual with this green flag look you would split the stage in half which would be about 50 laps a run in each stage but let me say this if your race car's handling decent don't be afraid to run it long a fuel run is only about 10 or 12 laps more than that and maybe you catch a caution and trap some cars a lap down in the closing laps of this race if the caution waves think about two tires only for track position or just staying out as brad keselowski and his two team did a year ago that led to a win that's a credible.com a race strategy riding with brad as he works some lap traffic now looking at biggest movers uh kyle busch from 18th to eighth older brother curt has also picked up 12 spots reagan well mike a little bit of a surprise to see kyle bush move this far forward this quick he told me before the race started he did not have the grip in that race car that he's wanted all weekend long he actually felt like when the temperatures cooled down and it got dark out that is when he would be best this is a little bit of a surprise right now for him to be going this far forward this fast he just reported on the radio very happy with the car right now well the last time showing and why should we expect any different he had practice penske teammates there kozlowski and legano just uh dropping a couple of spots from the start of this race [Applause] you know you depend so much as a driver i always really went off the right front the feel that i would have the grip that i would have in that right front that would just give me the sensation of what i could do to tell the team how to make my car we saw right there for uh mark trex jr how that car grabbed with the right front and really rotated quickly through the bumps at three and four so they're gonna have to try to figure that out i don't know maybe maybe some air pressure adjustments that they can do on the next stop well it also tells me that these tires are wearing right and losing grip and you saw it right there in one of the best cars just like i talked about earlier with the downforce of things that they usually have austin dillon in fifth moving up on fourth place kevin harvick jamie kevin harvick right now trying to hold up a hard charging austin dillon i talked to the team rodney childers right before the start of this race and he said i'm banking on this track getting tighter as the night goes on so what we did to start this race we freed him up so it's going to be uncomfortable while the sun is out the only comment so far from kevin harvick sliced in to write in what you saw with the 19 car as well and coming from my experience you want to be free at the front side of this run because it is going to tighten up if you're comfortable right now you're going to be yeah right and then you go back to the 18 of kyle busch is moving up through the field are they too good too early right now and how are they going to stay ahead of this track as it transitions now kyle just passed daniel suarez for seventh place vince suarez is off to a good start though and it's a little bit tight trending but it started off good you know i talked to crew chief travis mack about this first year team earlier today and asked him what the greatest challenge was for this group and he said getting the splinter height right and i kind of laughed and he said no i'm serious he said if you're a quarter inch too high or a quarter inch too low you're joke he said practice was really good for us on friday allowed us to take a big step and we're confident where we're starting and that's a lot about what you guys talked about earlier with the necessity of practice schwarz started 9th running 80. 39 laps in kyle larson has led them all but chase elliott is closing now just a third of a second back this is the longest green flag stretch to start the 600 since 2014. martin truax is in for a pit stop and an out ross chastain getting service right now daniel suarez headed for pit road which is becoming a busy place yeah mike this is actually a little early but i think neither one of these drivers were very happy with their car get here and get advantage of those fresh tires early for suarez it's gotten just a little bit tight but otherwise he has been very pleased with the way it fired off four tires and fuel no significant changes jamie the 48 of alex bowman said harsh everywhere they want to tighten them up here air pressure adjustment and wedge in the left rear reagan austin dylan happy with his race car right now started off the race just a little bit too free ended this run just a little bit too tight which means the nose of the car won't turn as good as he wants to right now jamie that's exactly what ryan blaney was saying just not turning too well but he said not too bad in the traction compound in three and four so that is an optimistic report let's go to this the 11 of denny hamlin has just been too tight they put the wrench in the right rear four tires and fuel gonna try to free him up a little bit increasing some of that speed as he had to come from middle of the pack now the wrench on the left side of the window as well put up on ross chastain he is still on fifth road long stop green flag stops continue chase elliott aggressive to the outside the five of kyle larson coming to pit road nice gain there harvick on the right kirk bush on the left of your screen hey this is just a warm up mike these guys are going to be doing a lot of pit stops tonight at least nine 10 pit stops last year kozlowski won it with nine most teams made 10. jimmy kyle larson pretty good they told him he was better through traffic than anybody else and nine was comparing himself and felt like one was good at one end and the knight was the opposite and there's four tires there for larson william byron the race leader now kyle busch comes to pitt road byron stenhouse bush surrenders third place to make his green flag stop reagan kyle busch a great start to this race for him right now going from 20th up inside that well inside the top ten as he said earlier the car's good at the end of that run it lacks just a little bit of grip overall for him though and here comes william byron third car in line on the right surrendering the lead and vince will be there well and it has been a great start for the 24. they've not had problems in the way they have started this season but they've struggled a little bit with those final adjustments of the race we're a long way from that point but so far so good for the 24 and firing no changes just four tires and fuel a little tape on the front ricky stenhouse also pits he would have been the leader jamie best start of the season for this 47 team they were really optimistic coming in here felt like they had a really good shot brian paddy said we can win this game we just have to be clean all night long no mistakes as they have a good first pit stop of the night brad keselowski from 13th on the left of your screen is the race leader yeah how many times have we seen this play out with brad keselowski where they just want to do the opposite of what everybody else does maybe catch a caution they we know he's got to get off hit road to make some adjustments that two machine has not been fantastic to start this race so far those two cars right there in your picture though teammates joe gibbs kyle busch martin truax jr then things have been fast if anybody could give these hendrick bunch run for their money it's going to be those two you know jeff if keslowski can catch a caution he's got all but six drivers a lap down right now justin haley completes his stop so does cody ware and garrett smithly and and to larry's point that's why it's worth gambling right now right you look at where the two of brad kiss lastly where you're running it puts you into this opportunity and that's exactly what they're going to try to take advantage of if that caution were to come out so the drivers that have not stopped quinn house one lap down anthony alfredo matt di benedetto and brad keselowski larry if they're on a long run strategy how far can they go they can go about another four or five more laps mike based on what i'm estimating on their fuel forecaster at the pace they're running right now no more than about seven or eight there is anthony alfredo who has never run a full season in any of nascar's three national touring series trucks xfinity or cup but has this ride with front row motorsports for the entire 2021 season here are the drivers that will be first and second once this sorts out traffic jam boy yeah big traffic jam for a leader you know it's always tough is to be the leader when you come up on lap traffic because they're just fighting hard they have their own race that they're trying to run to maintain stand on the lead lap or stay from going two laps down so of course they're going to fight that leader hard but usually a little bit easier for that second place runner like chase celia to get through traffic that's just circumstantial right there and worst case scenario really they were side by side and they weren't racing each other to stay on the lead left they were two or three left down already brian blaney is in for a second stop unexpected loose wheel perhaps oh no these are the mistakes that we talk about that can knock you out of this thing but you're going to make these mistakes here comes brad keselowski the pit road finally you're going to make those mistakes make them early get them into the budget brad kaye's first stop of the day regan jeremy sold come in this time we are losing too much time they wanted to stay out just a little bit longer than what they did there that race car too loose in very tight off right now for brad he doesn't like it at the moment now he was 16th prior to pit stops in that team penske mustang yeah i'm not sure that they realized how much faster cars were going to go on those new tires those fresh goodyears when they came off the pit road but boy some of those leaders were going extremely fast so he was losing a lot of time to those on fresh tires here's what ryan blaney had to say is the reason for their stop i got a loose wheel you know you that's that you feel that vibration as soon as it gets worse and you know it's not going to get any better you got to get the pit road as fast as you can well especially this point in the race i mean you don't want to mess up a stud a wheel set or something like that completely take yourself out of the race give yourself a chance and so matthew benedetto will surrender the lead after two laps in that wood brothers number 21. remember we saw kyle larson trying to put anthony alfredo lap down having a difficult time with it but on these new tires as anthony alfredo stayed out now he's actually been able to pass him and then we'll see what happens with the 38 once he comes to pit road right alfredo was the leader so that pass was for the lead yeah last week and then he came out and qualified well today was running top ten and then this a broken oil pump belt they came in went under the hood pushed him back to the garage they are going to attempt to replace it but obviously his chances are done thanks jamie that's usually not a good that's not a belt you want to break right there and it's usually when by the time you realize it's broke it's usually too late well the good thing is they'll be able to plug into the ecu and see how long it was without all pressure so anthony alfredo becomes the final car to pit in this first green flag cycle as fans cheer for their favorites in charlotte buckle up your taste buds coca-cola and doordash join nascar and saluting military service members this memorial day weekend dash subscribers get five dollars off your order when you buy a coca-cola beverage for race day available participating locations full terms and conditions at doordash.com 66 green flag laps 99 miles here at charlotte motor speedway kyle larson back into the lead after green flag stops we've been caution free so far and you see the kyle larson his in lap and his stop and his outlap all that combined quicker than brad kaye by a tenth quicker than chase elliott by two tenths class of the field but isn't it amazing they can come hit pit road come down pit road have a four tires pit stop fuel exit pit road and be within one tenth two tenths of one another that's incredible talking about picking them up putting them down there are just 19 cars on the lead lap after 67 laps 100 miles one of those is denny hamlin but hamlin is back in 16th place leader in this series but also is winless thus far deep into the season last year he was one of the top race winners well in the step that just amazes me and i think all the things that denny hamlin has accomplished in winning crown jewel races that he's not won here at charlotte in the 600 or at charlotte motor speedway but i'll tell you what you want to know everybody's talking about right now this guy right here making this move he is flying up through the field he almost made it too late did he get in the back of the three right there that was really close going to use this black car corlejoy as a pick but not going to work austin dillon fighting hard on the outside pretty tough to pass right now that middle lane and that in the traction compound where you see the three of austin dillon there's just a little more grip the more momentum in that middle lane 2017 austin dillon brought richard childress's number three back to victory lane and when you've got a guy like kyle bush coming up through the field you know he's fast he might be a factor in the race you're gonna fight him a little bit harder even though this is 600 mile race because he might be the guy to beat for this win absolutely you let him around that might be the last time you've ever seen larson just a couple of hundreds quicker than elliott right now those two hendrick camaros class of the field along with their teammate william byron one two three the first ford is kevin harvick in fourth and the first toyota kyle busch in sixth we've certainly seen that out of kyle this year in particular on these intermediate mile and a half racetracks ben lights out against the competition now his teammates have joined that party whatever they had going on him and his crew chief it seems like everybody at hendrick motorsports is on board with it all of them right up front when it comes that's i guarantee it's a competition these boys are they're they see it they feel it they're all working hard trying to figure out what those guys have that we don't yeah you hope the ultimate goal for every organization you hope you're racing your teammates for the win yeah big move by kyle bush part of the longest green flag run ever to start a 600. fox nascar is sponsored by the all-new bronco sport built wild and by credit one bank the official credit card of nascar 78 laps complete kyle larson leading remember this quiz show you fetch your life i watched this as a kid groucho marx was the host george fenneman uh was his number two and it was a live quiz show and boy it was funny well it's coming back and jay leno kevin eubanks are going to be the hosts should be a lot of fun now jay's a veteran race fan and america's number one car guy kevin this is your first race what's your impression it is so happening it's so cool really the whole thing memorial weekend all the people are meeting and the vibe is so good and it's amazingly organized it's it's just great it's really cool these guys like a bad penny they show up every time we turn around it's like the suits follow you around and try carly she's saying she was beautiful carly twice she did a beautiful job yes well hey you guys did a great job with that command too that was a lot of fun and and jay you know what recently i was following you around i was in a c8 corvette you were in i think a 63 split window you're a pretty good driver have you ever gotten behind a race car and maybe gone out there and competed as much as i teach you guys i have the greatest respect for you guys i really do because i am not an athlete i'm the kind of guy you guys are going oh i need another pound of tire and there's another pound of air pressure in the left front and i'm going what's that thumping sound oh you got a flap oh i got a flap you know so i mean i like cars i like to work on them i like to know the history of them but you know you it's an athletic event and a lot of people don't realize you really need to be an athlete and you guys are real athletes and we're just i'm a guy likes to eat hamburgers and pizza while i'm driving so uh i enjoy it i have immense respect but no i'm not a race car driver well let's take you for a ride let's take him for a ride first see a kyle bush here yeah cowboy jay you got out there i saw you on this racetrack obviously coming to take the green flag here on a run you said athlete looks like it's pretty good right now but 600 miles jay you've been all across the country that's a long time yeah i mean in a hot rod i did about 50 laps to tell a day got 190 awesome so that was that was that was great fun i really enjoyed that so jay i want to know and kevin you too have you guys ever been cruising down the highway in the desert and you rolled up the windows and turned off the air conditioner and ran for 600 miles that's 130 degrees inside these cars some days whoa that's called that's because we're smart we don't do that yeah no clint and i we agreed hard to argue in the kitchen and you see that red thing glowing on the stove you just put your hand right on there you know what i'm saying oh man i was definitely that kid yeah yeah exactly from up here it looks like oh yeah i can do it oh yeah put me in the car okay but no no i could tell you you duo you nailed the gentleman start your engine that's one of my favorites it was awesome you guys did a great job you know race car driving is like sex all guys think they're good at it and they're not jeff you're out get him back in here that is awesome i need you the rest of the night maybe maybe coming to fox this fall jay leno giving you [Music] that's the three stooges fifth place battle here kyle bush continuing to move through the field and navigate around lap traffic he was finally able to get by austin dillon now he's trying to track down kevin harvick this crossover you know the real exciting part for me is how good the camera work has gotten because i've been watching this since the 60s when there'd just be a camera up in the sky looking down from the stands and you got no sensation of speed or handling you know now with these with these uh gopro style cameras right on the car right you know on the splitter and all around it makes it so exciting to watch jay i know you've got a huge collection of cars and a particular fondness for steam-powered cars but i've read that steam power went away because it took so long to start the car how long to fire one of those up and get ready to roll well it takes about about 10 minutes something like that but you know compared to having to crank a car and breaking your arm it wasn't bad you know you'd like to pilot when you have a cup of coffee you come out and your car's ready to go 10 minutes these guys are halfway to tennessee oh kevin i don't know how you do i don't know how you do it because i'm playing sidekick to two comedians here every sunday afternoon i need some help i'm gonna need some advice it's been about 30 years of getting used to it i'm getting used to it your problem is mike you think they're comedians yeah that's so true oh my gosh thank you guys for being here hey thanks mate comes upon it but you guys always make us feel welcome it's so much fun and uh jeff was great on jay's garage last weekend we got to get you guys out there too come on on the program enjoy thank you guys thank you and watch out for uh you bet your life this fall on fox stations oh by the way kyle larson is still leading how about that after 89 laps 94 laps complete kyle larson in front of chase elliott by 3.3 the fox bet super six app is giving you a chance to win clint's brand new camping world rv and you can win your share of 25 000 just download the app answer six questions for your shot to win free to play don't miss out play now while there's still time because the contest starts at the start of stage two and that's only five six laps away right front down on daniel suarez he makes an unscheduled stop but now with just five laps to go in the first stage he could stay out on the stage ending caution and end up in pretty good shape here but he's going to lose a lap with this green flag stop nine times out of ten jeff is right into the fence i've had that same thing happen and my outcome was not rolling on the pit road it was rolling into the back of the ambulance me neither and i tell you what great driving by eric jones to avoid him also heads up daniel suarez was 11th he is now two laps down hey 42 chastain still running out there after that oil pump belt issue they got to back out there 30 like eight laps down but it's a long night and there's what fresher tires will do for you coming off fit rope for ross chastain goes by our leader kyle larson man i can't believe you guys let leno bag on us over our suits it's like they lost his luggage at the airport but he was crazy did he not realize he was coming to the booth there's the interval for chase elliot and with two laps to go in the stage pit road closes [Music] alex bowman tenth his teammates one two three before rick hendrick who last week tied petty enterprises for most career wins by one team throughout nascar's history 268. and when this race started there's rick kendrick who signed the door of that winning car of chase elliot as did chase the whole team and richard petty they auctioned it off for charity and i believe it raised over 30 thousand dollars the auction closed just about the time this race took the green flag tonight very cool yeah and i i think actually uh rick hendrick himself is going to match that to double that so that's almost uh fifty eight thousand dollars one victory victory junction game cam which is an incredible place green and white checkered flag is out to signal the end of stage one kyle larson picks up his seventh stage win of the year most of all drivers championship points paid to the first 10 drivers at the end of each stage kyle larson started first running first stage one winner [Music] the relatives of our fox nascar crew who served our u.s military on this memorial day weekend end of stage one kyle larson the stage winner here's regan pit stops boston dale on the bottom right of your screen very confident in his race car right now got a little bit too tight as that run went on especially in traffic but overall happy bits left is william byron pitted from third place the car started loose and it stayed loose so a track bar adjustment for the 24 and four tires jamie chase elliott the nine said that ride was worse that time can't be any tighter air pressure adjustment and four tires kyle larson who's been class of the field said he just needs a little bit more what they did last time which was air pressure it's a drag race off pit road who got it mike it'll be larson here's your ram race off pit road alex bowman picked up two spots and tyler reddick lost a bunch as he overshot his pit and had to back up into his pit stall there's the difference between those hendrick chevys let's uh dial up our stage one winner hey kyle this is jeff the guys up in the fox sports booth you got us yeah i got you well man that thing's looking pretty good out there and uh you know we talked before this race you talked about how the track's going to change keeping up with it throughout the night what are you seeing so far i've noticed you can run about half the the run on the bottom and then you transition up into the traction compound are you making any adjustments to the car um well i lift the sun out right now i think i'm just building a little bit tight on the long run the first run i think i spent too much time in the traction compound and overused my front so after the green flag stop i just tried to stay out of it a little bit longer and i felt like whatever adjustment they made as well as [Music] not running up there as much i thought my front grip was better but um still needs to be a little bit better i think it's going to get better goes down but all in all my metro check chevy is really fast so just got to try and stay ahead of my teammates here yeah 10-4 well hey thanks for talking to us congrats on that stage one win good luck the rest of the way thank you every car in tonight's race has on its windshield the name of a service man or woman who was lost in the service of our country kyle larson honoring greenville mississippi's eddie dicas marine lance corporal who was lost in afghanistan just six weeks into his tour there at age 22. xfinity more than fast moment from austin when kurt bush showed incredible car control to avoid disaster in the rain proving it takes more than speed to succeed vote for this week's more than fast moment at xfinity racing on twitter xfinity proud premier partner of nascar kyle larson your leader over chase elliott larson doesn't want to share he's led 95 laps his teammate chase elliott none well kevin harvick might have something to say with this uh about that because he's in a position now on this restart where he can he can maybe make a difference pushing some i believe he's got the inside so he could push chase i know uh he's going to be behind larson actually on this restart so he's definitely the class of the forge kevin harvick right there hanging tough in third but i'll tell you kyle bush keeps and him is he kyle bush and tracks just keep slowly creeping on him pace car is in they approach the geico restart zone for stage two green flag legato going three wide in that yellow forward he was three wide early on the front straight away on that restart denny hamlin stuck there in the middle [Music] definitely tell they're more comfortable now getting a lot more aggressive on the restart couple two or three rows of three wide yeah i'd say that traction compounds got some grip up there too lagano restarted 14th and picked up four spots on that first lap harvard per second on the inside not gonna get it there he better get up in that gap behind the nine there you go kyle larson talking about that traction compound before we went back to green it's the longer that we ran in the pga one like that first stint the tires did look just a little beat up looking at our longevity there the way our cars seem to have a lot more speed at the end of this run you know looking at your steering wheel trace i do think there's something to that so when we're able to run below it definitely take advantage of that as long as we're able to just let me know what you need to make that happen okay boy what a difference jeff since the start of your career when there was no onboard telemetry sent to the pits for analysis during the race yeah that was me telling the crew chief what i thought it was doing to the right front tire not not the computer oh we see william byer trying to squeeze up in front of kevin harvey but that's great information though because that tells kyle larson if you can run that bottom lane and not use up that right front not put as much wheel when you move up into that traction compound pick up some speed but clint you know you're putting more wheel into it to do it yeah stopwatch likes it kurt chief likes it until he looks at that right front tire after the fifth time and man come back down a little bit kevin harvick trying to hold on to third against william byron on the inside harvick comes back on the outside with that launch off turn two jamie two great looking race cars right there and kevin harvick he's loose to start the run but builds tighter so for the second time in a row they went up on the track bar for kevin harvick and he still feels comfortable but i can tell you right now that it is cloud covered and the champs are definitely dropping mike [Music] that's a hard obstacle to overcome when you're loose in the front side of a run and it builds tight the reason you're loose and freed up on the front side of the run is to keep it good on a long run when it goes through that transition that fast that's a hard thing to overcome kyle busch was right up to the bumper of william byron coming out of turn two now their single file back to the start finish line [Music] joey logano battles ricky stenhouse for eighth place legato sends it into turn three he sure did i didn't hear a chick up off the throttle able to make that pass on stenhouse i think they've made some improvements or the tracks started to come to this 22 of joey logano as well as that great restart and behind stenhouse tyler reddick in the eight overcoming having slid through his pit on the stop he's right there but so is alex bowman as you ride with the 48. yeah we're going to see how the 48 of alex bowman if they've improved that car the ride quality as well as the balance as he's going to try to make this pass to the inside of tyler reddick kyle reddick cutting that preferred lane with that traction compound carry the momentum off the corner jamie how about the tires that came off our leader's car yeah we just heard the radio clip daniel's talking to his driver saying now that we've been leading this long in this last stint you'd shoot up the tires quite a bit this is the left front right front and the rears here tonight we'll see anywhere from nine to 11 pit stops so certainly we'll be keeping an eye on these tires as the conditions change throughout the night well one of the interesting things that i've noticed that they had a green flag stop in that first stage and when they came back out on the racetrack those are some of the fastest laps that a lot of drivers were making and i think that was putting a little more abuse on this that right front tire kevin harvick to your point jeff has the fastest lap of the race and it seems it was made right after his green flag pit stop in stage one kyle larson has led 105 of the 116 laps in charlotte fox nascar is sponsored by progressive insurance save when you bundle auto home or motorcycle insurance kyle larson's lead is half a second but chase elliott's pursuit of the leader somewhat hindered by kevin harvick and william byron who are now side by side for third less than a second off the lead yeah i think chase elliott as he sees going around this run by the sixth star but uh the four really gained on the nine he got loose down in one and two i think it was when he started to move up up the the racetrack a little bit clint and boy he got he got loose and the floor car almost made a pass on him this is going by david starr yeah i'm afraid this reminds me of the day terry labonte said on the radio how many 66s are out there it wasn't the 66 but you get the idea i passed that one about every lap i guess he's making minimum speed but they're second third fourth and there's your leader kyle larson and i tell you he is not by any stretch of the imagination getting away from this bunch like he did the first run right there these guys are hanging tough i'm telling you there's there's three or four horses right here that are that are kind of setting themselves apart from the competition right now so jeff help me with what cliff daniels said to kyle larson does he not want him to lead or just not want him to abuse those tires oh no he doesn't want him to give up any track position i promise you that but what he wants him to do is just be thinking about how hard he's pushing that right front tire and mainly try to run underneath the traction compound if you can if you can maintain the lead as you see right there he went to the bottom i just think that traction compound is a little grippier and it just tears a little bit more of that right front tire up as you run in it little crossover action right here ricky stenhouse gonna have to get him clear though that's the hardest part you can get crossed over you can see right there can't quite get cleared up right here bowman comes back on the outside and re takes the position and doesn't like that what are you doing is that not a wave out the window thank you that wasn't a thank you or was that your number one jamie just updating alex bowman who's running 10th right now he is on the struggle bus it's just been all over the place they didn't make any adjustments on the last stop they just wanted to see if putting new tires on with some air pressure would help and he's also saying over the box his left rear is hitting something and he can hear it and jeff and klim remember yesterday and qualifying you can hear it hitting the track i don't know if it's the same issue but we're certainly keeping an eye on it you know cliff daniels kind of telling uh the five of kyle larson to get down out of that stuff he's better looking in the rearview mirror better be telling that guy move up because this nine car is coming we saw him wiggling her front side of this run a little bit loose i think the truck's coming to him right here as he's driving right through the back bumper the five when i just wonder as loose as that nine was did alan gustafsson crew chief or chase elliot did he try to get ahead of this racetrack because he sees the sun setting shade starting to set onto this racetrack and knowing that it's going to change make that adjustment then made that adjustment maybe maybe went a little far but hey it's starting to come to him now i'll be surprised if kyle larson stays in that bottom lane you got to beat him with a punch right how am i gonna get around him let's let's beat them to that punch of this track changing and this is about as close as chase elliott has been to the race leader as william byron and kevin harvick go out and now look at byron use that pick slower car the 52 there the lickey that was a that was a nice move right there he kind of set that up two turns three and four and had that momentum got positioned and made the pass that's a strategy that's something you see you set up maybe a lap or two as you're approaching him you try to get yourself situated where you can when they catch that lapper you can pounce on him kyle bush here in fifth let's go under the helmet with kyle brought to you by toyota samantha and i went through ivf when braxton was born we started the bundle of joy fun the grants are amazing and samantha does such a fantastic job with all of that we've gone out there and we've helped i think it's 70 families to that have received grants we've got 36 babies born uh another five that are on the way right now it's been a unique opportunity for us to to get into that space it's very rewarding um but you know you kind of look at it more so to the family that you're giving to and how much life-changing experience that's going to be for them the bundle of joy fund just such a special cause for kyle and samantha oh here we go right there boy i think kyle larson thought chase elliott was going to try to go to the inside but he didn't get to the outside instead we have a new leader i told you that car was coming first time that the defending nascar cup champion has led today yeah i hate to say this and go back to some stats but that might have been the best thing happened to kyle larson because any time he's led more than 200 laps in a race he's never fox nascar is sponsored by toyota let's go places 138 laps complete hear your toyota top performers kyle bush in six martin truex in eighth bubba wallace just outside the top ten and ahead of his cult team owner denny hamlin christopher bell in 16th been a lot of close calls here in charlotte that's james davidson the aussie up high i guarantee you that's a lot closer than james davidson was expected if it's going to be and the one of kurt bush having an issue here just ahead of christopher bell is that two weeks in a row he's threading the needle like that but this time it was because he had to come to pit road reagan well there you see kurt bush actually making the turn to go to the garage right now through pit road we'll find out what happened there mike was this something similar to what happened to his teammate more trouble for both chip ganassi cars hey that could be a belt issue mike just like ross chastain his teammate both of these ganassi cars possibly with belt problems on the front of the engine so up comes the hood and repairs to be made chase elliott out in front of kyle larson now by four tenths william byron nine tenths back you know those are that's a hendrick motorsports engine right there on both of those cars if i'm from the rest of these guys leading this pack the nina elliott larson byron all these guys somebody's over there wondering what's going on i can promise you that for sure checking it out continuing a fox tradition begun 15 years ago we're going to scroll across the bottom of the screen several times tonight the names of the service men and women that have been lost in the service to our country over the past 12 months we're very happy to report that the number of names on this list this year is roughly 50 of what it was one year ago and that the trend is downward in the number of americans lost in the service to the united states and the freedoms that we hold dear 144 complete david starr has been posted by nascar black flag to pip road for failure to maintain minimum speed we'll take a look at that car and he'll have an attempt to come out and get back up and make minimum otherwise he'll need to go to the garage so larry 44 laps in what are you looking at yeah mike we went back racing with 93 laps to go in this stage i say they'll do the same thing as stage one split it in half so somewhere probably in the next five to eight laps you'll start to see these guys hitting pit road for green flag pit stops well i'll tell you what you could throw a blanket over these top three right now chase elliott after making that pass for the lead on kyle larson as keslavsky hits pit road he's going to do the opposite what they did the last time be the first one on pit road brad kozlowski comes in from 18th place regan well jeff's exactly right the plan was a short pit this time the exact opposite that race car right now is too loose on entry he's very specific that that is what's costing him the most time on the racetrack chassis adjustment tires fuel in his way so we begin the pit stop sequence with 19 cars on the lead lap of course pitting under green will cost you one to the race leader now daniel suarez already won lap down making his green flag stop 14 track house you heard pitfall trying to fire the crew up here during a free race that me fired up oh man i'm going to tell you what that guy can motivate anybody and he's a co-owner on this team ricky stenhouse is in outside pole sitter for jtg doherty motorsports the conceptors and nba legend brad doherty owners of that team he's been sitting around the top ten moose with the rear and he can't turn center off in force they'll help him there with an air pressure adjustment track bar adjustment and wedge in the right rear william byron kyle bush alex bowman martin truax in the pit lane bubba coming in pretty hot right there and back to your screen be interesting to see if he's uh got a penalty coming his way there is a speed limit reagan you see kyle bush finishing up his pit stop that race car a little bit tight when he lands into turn one feels like it can bland and go through the right front tire too much right now here are the hendrick teams they've been battling for the lead all day and even battling for position on pit road oh that's gonna be interesting yeah because the nine of chase elliot's pitting before him and had to go in behind the five jamie yeah interesting there they can't stop battling each other from the sounds of both of them they're in a really good place right now both said we're good my car's good larson on the right side said no change is necessary and the nines that we're in a great place handling wise track wise we're moving with the track fins on the eleven of denny hamlin the car is just edgy in the center of one and two and then tight on late exit they just haven't found the sweet spot with it yet tyler reddick gives up the lead to pimp he comes in just as eric almarola pulls out and takes a close call just like we saw at dover whoever won out of pitch right the pits are going to be important when you have those cars that are equally matched the way they are with that hitter motorsports bunch it comes down to the pits and kyle larson just beat the nine of chase watch back to benedetto here in the 21 locking it up yeah you want to use as much of that banking as you possibly can to get maximum amount of braking to the uh in the pit road that's what's going to get you there faster but boy it's risky too and you saw right there matt matty d locked him up so coming to the end of this cycle christopher bell ryan blaney michael mcdowell corey lejoy and ryan priests have not yet put it it's confirmed the problem with kurt bush same as his teammate ross chastain they threw that accessory belt that drives the power steering and the oil pump [Music] looks like a little bit of damage maybe on the left front there christopher bell's fender see it hanging out little piece hanging out there keep an eye on that mike right before that set of pit stops there i saw the 24 wounded byron putting a lot of pressure on second place kyle larson and he was one of the first cars to come down pit road of those leaders look at the job that that team did on pit road he has now put himself in second place ahead of chase elliot i'm telling you when it comes down to cars that are that equally matched on the racetrack the pit road performance is going to make a difference and it did just there so christopher bell stops leaving just blaney mcdowell and lejoy out on the racetrack pj mcleod is in this will pretty much complete the round of green flag stops and kyle larson will reassume the lead from william byron and chase elliot his teammates kevin harvick back to fourth kyle busch fifth seventeenth time larson has led at least 100 laps coca-cola and nascar together tastes better you're watching nascar on fox here's how the coca-cola racing family is faring at 159 laps austin dillon former winner of the 600 he's in seven joey logano 10th denny hamlin 11th ryan newman got the free pass on the race's one and only caution at the end of stage one and daniel suarez two laps down 28. so let's go back to green flag pit stops and look again at how hard these hendrick teammates were racing each other down pimp road yeah kyle larson just gets really aggressive see the niner leader chase elliot maybe a little more conservative but that allows the five to actually get position on him coming onto pit road under caution i believe this would be a penalty under green i believe it's allowed we're going to have to go back and look at the rule but uh boy that that's that's what you call putting the block on somebody i've done that before but i've never done to my teammate yeah but he came from three car leagues three three car leagues plus back that's hey you can be mad but you're gonna be mad at yourself you didn't get it all coming on the pit road no that's true yeah jeff that's really more of a rule under caution entering pit road single file and staying in line you know we're about 30 minutes away from sunset sunset is scheduled for 8 31 pm eastern time you heard jamie little doing a report about the track cooling down and right now everything is in shade except the back stretch in turn three we've created a system where we can forecast the track temperature it's easy to forecast ambient temperature but look right here we started this race 88 degrees by the time this race ends we're going to be 60 degrees at the end this next stage we're going to be roughly 78 degrees now remember cooler track temperature is just simply more grip and the speeds are going to pick up so this is a way for us to track the transition that the that the transition the track's going to go through to larry's point seven of the first eight drivers just ran their fastest lap of the race within the last half dozen laps absolutely but that transition that he speaks of right there you better be keeping up with it you heard jeff talk about that with a nine car we saw him maybe beat the five part of the punch of keeping up with that track and that transition that it's going through 20 degrees is a lot when you're talking grip level yeah when grip gets better the faster speeds on the track it's going to change the balance build those air pressures up a little bit different those goodyear tires so here's your xfinity fastest lap last lap of the race austin dillon fastest car on track kyle busch kevin harvick christopher bell eric jones and the lead four are nowhere to be found on that lace maybe it's because of traffic we got three wide for our leader and byron having to pick his way through i'll tell you what william byers got a really good race car they they really dialed that thing in vince well that's exactly right jeff crew chief rudy fugle made a track bar adjustment a little bit earlier when it was 2-3 and byron just came on the radio a moment ago and he says this is the balance right here maybe a touch free but i like it and i think you're seeing that result on track be very curious to follow now the tire where we saw that right front tire off the five car kyle larson earlier as this track gets faster and they're using that traction compound that middle lane more will it wear those tires out a little bit more and potentially even damage them yeah and the grip level goes up but the speeds go up so you're wearing those tires out harder you're leaning on that steering wheel harder because of that grip level foot through the floorboard hand full of wheel let's go for it today is the coolest temperatures for the coca-cola 600 since 1995. and trust me 600 miles went back in the day man jeff this baby was hot outside your tongue was hanging out what do you mean we're not even halfway oh no i've actually lost i and no kidding i've lost 12 pounds during this race before oh i believe it unbelievable i mean you talk about having to keep up with your hydration over a long race like this on a hot day man it is tough the good position now on the broadcast booth you'll gain 12 pounds during this race trust me every time i meet a new fan somewhere like man i didn't realize she's that skinny i'm like what's that supposed to mean clint the tv screen has always been wider than it is tall certainly added a chin to me i can promise you that but it's added two or three to me then free of traffic william byron is closing in he's now within half a second of kyle larson for the lead after 168 laps in the coca-cola 600. this memorial day join usaa in honoring our nation's fallen military service members at poppyinmemory.com [Music] caution out of lap 173 remember the oil pump belt problem that kurt busch had they replaced it he went on pit road and went back out on the racetrack kaboom and a big puff of smoke tough day all right pit road is open under this second caution flag of the day regan kyle busch continues to be very happy with his number 18 car right now he says the balance is good it's just slipping the rear tires a little bit too much through the corners and it's a little tough to get up close to cars vince buyer and upper left portion of this green car just a little free in traffic he really feels it on the restart so they made a track bar adjustment jamie upper right of your screen the nine to chase ellie a little bit freer there hard time leaning and driving on that right front a wedge adjustment and four tires the five of larson pretty tight on the exit of four wants to turn a little bit better there but overall no looseness anymore how about denny hamlin picking up nine spots two times he and bowman and legano two tires each stop by big winners on this round of pit stops alex bowman your leader if you wanted to win clint's money here's one of the questions in the fox bed super six which of these drivers will have the best finishing position 24 laps from now at the end of stage two well i gotta say i thought that was gonna be a pretty easy answer until that caution came out right there all right getting ready for the restart here's our aerial coverage provided by goodyear for those that push the limits of possibility good year more driven such a good point right there jeff and that's why it's so hard to win this 600 mile race so many different things happen that untimely caution look how it shook this up right here going to be interesting if these guys can hold on so at the front bowman hamlin logano with two fresh tires larson has four so we'll listen to his spotter tyler munn car number five as we get ready to restart gonna be really easy still inside here inside 18 still there still there three white top three one top you'll get the run here still inside just 18 half back 24 in line with you still inside 18. [Music] his teammate there william byron that was close look at legano getting a push from the five of larson hey who got left behind there was harvick all the way back to 10th place yeah he's been really strong on these restarts watch the nine of chase elliott behind legato here whoa scroll them up yeah well you see the 22 gets a nice push in 48 the 9 got up there at the same time but now he's right on the rear bumper of that 22 and loses the nose big time right there new spotter uh this week for chase elliot trey poole his cousin who has worked with him before jason sponsor eddie dahat suspended due to an incident last labor day look at this that was a perfect side draft by denny hamlin just got to that back quarter panel or rear bumper of the 48 alex bowman able to pull him back and take the lead man you want to change the complexion this race have to caution like that do two tires four tires and it's all through the field jeff it's not just what we see right here in the camera those guys were two laps down a lap down they were able to get the wave around how did chase elliott lose all those spots was in the middle three wide and now he's up there trying to take the lead from denny hamlin four tires to there too say what we had a lot of three wide on that last restart truex having to check up certainly you can see that look at the draft that those cars got behind him and they were three wide austin dylan he didn't know which one to go to any meeting mine and mo which car do i follow remember denny hamlin took two tires on that stop chase elliott trying to take advantage of hamlin well even if denny hammer loses the lead which i believe he's going to right here to the nine of chase nope chase elliott can't quite clear the 11. it's still going to be a big net game for him for him it might even for bowman if he can hang in there too 18 laps to the end of stage two well there's the difference four tires versus two and chase elliot's just able to wrap that bottom just hug that white line and be able to run that shorter line easily slides up to take the lead and on the flip side of that you saw the 11 get loose up there getting into three it's something that they'll all wear worn out tires did not like well hamlin was 11th at the time of the caution so you're right big net game for hamlin in the 11th he's got to hang on 17 more laps but i think he will william byron goes past joey logano for sixth place jamie i talked to joey logano before the start of the race and he said those hendrick cars are going to be lights out the only way i can have a chance at them and beating them tonight is doing something different well we just saw that they came in the hendrick cars took four joey took two tires well what just happened he's got four hendrick cars in front of him well and it might have worked out a little bit better for joey logano had he been the first one off of pit road but instead he was third behind bowman and hamlin so now you're trapped in some dirty air and on two tires and that car has not been as good as some of the others already they're making gains on it but he's really struggling right now in this position now here comes harvick who spent the first 150 laps of this race in the top five he's clawed his way back into the top ten now and is at eighth place ahead of logano behind tyler reddick kyle larson coming back to run chase elliott for the lead with 15 laps to go in stage two we'll take you fox side by side nine laps to go to the end of stage two in charlotte which will mark halfway in this 600-mile race let's go back to the back stretch in that incident with kyle buscher in the 18. yeah let's watch he gets a big run on his teammate denny hamlin those two tires start to fade a little bit dives to the bottom slides up for the slide job but look he gets a little bit wide he had to lift out of the gas right there stacked him up then he waited on him actually got passed because of it colored in the eight going by into sixth place that tells me that 18's looking for some front grip as this sun goes down the car is pretty tight well but also trying to make sure he got up in front of him in good you know major and got clearer of him trying to do right then run out of real estate had to lift one two three four looks a little like dover just a different order those four hendrick camaros one two three four dover a couple of weeks ago the first time ever in nascar history that a four-car team had finished one two three four ahead of all the competition in fact it took five other teams to fill the top ten that day might have the second time in nascar well i i what i'm surprised by i mean certainly hendrick is sitting on all eight cylinders right now with all four of their cars that 48 of alex bowman they've been struggling a little bit so great call by greg ives to get that clean air take two tires and put him in this third position you said eight cylinders i'm not sure that they're broken i think the competition yeah they might have ten joey logano trying to hold on to the final stage point here for roger penske austin dillon former 600 winner trying to take that away there's harvick and hamlin for seventh place as the stage winds down and behind them that light blue car chris busher for roush fenway racing having another great run here in the top 10. yeah you see hamlin obviously moving well there's another pick man those guys are having trouble with the 52 and 66 out here it creates opportunities kyle would be bad too for foreign with the 11 car and move him towards you know your thought process of forecasting what to have at the end of that thing i like that opportunity that we've got to see right there with them making that gamble and i think it's get down to the end and it's a shorter run that can play a big role in the outcome of this round yeah it's great to learn early on look at tyler reddick trying to come into the picture here as the at kyle bush and alex bowman are battling for that fourth position but yeah do it now right know what the balance is on two tires if you're uh denny hamlin and you know you can make an adjustment later on this race if you get that same opportunity maybe make it even work a little bit better for you but don't think it was a learning curve just for you everybody else learned from you making that move as well that's true tyler reddick up to fifth placements and it should be no surprise that the rcr gang is running up toward the front especially with the reddick they are in affiliation with hendrick motorsports now sharing a lot of information of course engines and data so really you've got those four guys from hendrick running up for one two three and then reddick in fifth bowman in sixth there's a lot of collaboration going on in that top six right now well you gotta remember these chevrolets been getting their butts kicked by ford and toyota the last five years they're tired of that they've been working hard and they've been working together and it's paying off five of the top six to the bow tie brigade as we look at the fight for the final stage point this is about as solid as i've seen bubba run in a long time they keep getting better and better week in week out creeping up on the top ten right there sixth place on the right of your screen harvick and bowman coming to the end of stage two and the cross flags for halfway like kevin's car right there good looking hot rod for the third time larson has swept the first two stages of the race this year he finished second both times and for the final stage point i think i think he got him well austin dillon 10th gets the final point i don't think he got him and there it is for 11th which pays no points but no but it was fun to watch sure absolutely kyle larson sweeps the first two stages we've seen this movie before and now a nascar memorial day weekend tradition honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms that we enjoy every day the entire field has come to a halt on pit road as we join the track public address system ladies and gentlemen at this time we would ask that you please stand for a moment of remembrance to salute and honor the men and women of our armed forces who have made the sacrifice their lives so that we may enjoy our freedom and this memorial day weekend please join us for a moment of silence thank you the cars will re-fire they'll take a lap around and we get to see pit road action the honor and remember flag a national symbol of remembrance recognizing the ultimate sacrifice of our military fallen heroes and their gold star families to learn more text flag 271 777 when america was founded democracy was a new idea most world leaders achieved their crown either by inheritance or by force the idea that the people could select their own leaders and monitor them and elect them time after time was brand new and was born of democracy so why not why are we in iraq why are we in afghanistan but why does america send its men and women around the world to protect and preserve these freedoms it's because of what we believe and what we enjoy as abraham lincoln said at gettysburg we highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain that this nation under god shall have a new birth of freedom and this government of the people by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth that is why and that is why this weekend is our most solemn holiday and is so special to all of us and why we honor those who as lincoln said gave that last full measure of devotion for their flag for their country and four democracy and for the american way of life [Music] many of the teams carrying those windshield strips have met with the families of the fallen over these past few weeks so of some of our fox staff and the sense of loss is so great but so is the sense of honor and we enjoy the freedom to come to the track or sit in front of the tv set and watch a great race as is unfolding right now they're on pit road here's regan kyle busch a little bit of traffic to deal with early on in that run once he got free of the traffic though his race car was just a little bit too free for him this run on the 24 william byron just wants to take off a little snugger so they gave him a chassis adjustment also some cookies to eat during the break keeping the energy up jamie that was better there so a four tires stop his teammate the five of kyle larson edgy and loose in traffic but doesn't think he's too loose the car is still good and going in the right direction as he wins the battle off pit road it's a ram race off pit road kyle larson's crew under cliff daniels does the job and because he was the pole sitter he has the first choice of pits choosing pit stall number one it's a short run to the end of the timing line as larson has now swept both stages so far in this race and chase elliott has been his closest pursuer for most of the day he sure has led laps himself let's dial him up here hey chase chase elliott boy you're up in the booth you got me yes sir how's it going man it's going good how are you doing how's it going out there how's the transition of the racetrack as we're falling into the night it's cooling off the track temperatures are obviously going down it's a grip level going up and how is that traction compound holding up oh yeah you know it is it always always gains a lot of grip here at night today is uh today is no different so we'll see is obviously we're getting into the part of the race that i feel like is important and you might see some players change here so we need to stay on top of it and see where it goes well he certainly seemed like you guys when you made that adjustment kept up with the race track and beat him to the punch enabling you to get by that five car let's see it again man you're gonna have to get them elbows up right yeah man y'all enjoy hi buddy good luck all business all right we're at the end of stage two halfway in the coca-cola 600. hi i'm army specialist elizabeth hackbarth i'm here at camp ariftron kuwait i just want to say hi to all my family and friends back home and go chase elliott fox nascar is sponsored by mcdonald's there's a meal for every moment at mcdonald's sunset in charlotte halfway through the coca-cola 600 which means you're halfway from charlotte motor speedway to indianapolis motor speedway that's 600 miles if you drive it that's a good point and it's it's pretty hard to believe really you know you think about 600 miles it's so easy to just rattle that off because it's a coke 600. just think about how far that is a long way well i can tell you what there's still 100 almost 100 laps away from halfway and they're 100 feet away from the geico restart zone sorry we're at halfway i mean i'm in miles i've been miles okay my math's not too good but look at this restart three wide right here man that did not work for chris busher right there got three wide stuck out on the outside hung out to dry straight to the back now fixing to give him praise for being up front he'll get back he finished the second stage in eighth place just got bounced back to 14th you can just sense you know we get to this stage of the race they antici the the intensity level just starts to ramp up guys just start driving a little bit harder taking a little more risk a little more chance watch that continue on as we get to this stage into this stage in the next reddick wow look at this side by side with lego right there entering the corner and chase elliott under fire from harvick now well the grip level comes up too you know you these guys are comfortable they've got the adjustments they need they understand too hey you got to be on it on these restarts be very aggressive because if you can fend them guys off and make some passes that holds true all the way through the course of this long run bowman settles in sixth calibur seventh hamlin back there battling logano now into the corner you could just hear right there how logano had to check up in that little bit higher group denny hamlin was able to go right to the bottom not check up as much and make that pass i'll tell you what on will he be he's up on the wheel he's got those elbows out right now trying to go after this lead you said it earlier i mean they just keep making better better adjustments getting closer and closer to the front but a fast car i mean he just can't say enough about these guys they're literally racing each other for laps well and you know we heard cliff daniels crew chief for kyle larson talk about trying not to run up in that traction compounds harder on the right front tire i don't think larson wants to be up there but man those guys behind him like byron are so fast i think he has no choice slow car back straightaway christopher bell has been into the wall he had some damage on the nose of his car from earlier in that repair he was 11th and won't be able to get down to pit road this time if indeed he's headed there i see the goodyear rubbed off the boat right side tires right there particularly the right rear that's a pretty troublesome spot but i don't see a lot of smoke going through the corner and that's something you usually kind of a tell-all sign jeff right side's definitely on that right side's flat yeah it's not gonna not gonna be too long there he goes he gets down low i don't know if he's gonna stop but if he does boy the 14's gonna have to be careful doesn't come to pit road that time see that right side right here he's outside of chris fisher here chris bush is getting out into that weight took the weight the air off of him got loose vince yeah and you guys mentioned upstairs that they did have a little bit of an issue earlier tonight when they were hit from some debris from the one car and that put a hole in the front end on that particular instance here where bell got into the wall spotter told him i don't think i see any smoke coming from the car so stay out and christopher said no smoke inside either i'll stay out until it gets worse well that spotter and just boost off some smoke as he transitioned into the corner right there getting into three i saw smoke out of the right front i was looking forward to be honest with you on the right rear but saw the right front smoke even when there's not smoke it's rare when you hit the wall like he just did push those fenders in on those tires that it does not cut a tire down eventually and that's something that i'm longing for with this new car coming the anticipation of it there's a lot of things that i'm looking forward to but that right there in particular is something that we see time and time again in that xfinity series that those drivers can get away with that they can't in this series right here bell has dropped to 19 as tyler reddick goes after denny hamlin for seventh and the 20 situation may be getting worse he was fortunate not to get in the wall again but now he's just running slow down the back straightaway trying to get to pit road so christopher bell falls from 11th we had a lot of wave arounds on that caution so we have 24 lead lap cars including corey lejoy who got the free pass so a bell will fall off the lead lap here that's definitely the right front too he makes it to pit road without incident as uh william byron draws a bead on the leader jeff that's the second right front tire that we've seen cut down and i'm just blown away that it didn't end up in catastrophic you know caution and a rollback really usually right front getting into the corner here it's game over fourth place we've seen where the four of kevin harvick got a lot of short run speed but just can't quite hold on but the 18 of kyle bush does seem to have that long run speed we've talked about the 18 coming up through the field earlier in this race he's finally gotten himself in the best position he's been in to try to go after those leaders [Music] 217 laps complete kyle larson your race leader as christopher bell has a slide and cuts down a tire fox nascar is sponsored by pnc bank changing how you handle overdrafts with low cash mode 223 laps complete kyle larson out front and almost 3 500 of you went six for six man that was too easy clint winners pending verification of eligibility man we just got more friends sharing that money how about mike from ashburn virginia is clint's new best friend heard he's a big nascar fan random draw among all entrants congratulations got to meet jim the recipient of the last one what a great you know thing that's been it's been so fun to be able to follow along with the fox back super six app and and all the fans how they're how good they are knowing the sport knowing who to pick and those fans that went six for six they will each get about seven dollars but it was free to play so take it speaking of taking here comes tyler reddick on denny hamlin the old hospital hop right there hold on could you imagine those boys that called yesterday's race on the driver's only telecast yet kevin harvick joey the gunner ryan blaney and at the end of those 300 miles they go oh my gosh do you realize at this point sunday will only be halfway well that's what was making me think about the halfway and because i heard those guys say that and they just got to it and i'm going to tell you this race is the long long race when you're inside that car and these guys when they told them halfway so you see this great battle right here alex bowman going to the inside kevin harvick for fifth never even thought about checking out gonna slide up in front of him probably lifting right here a little bit you'll see okay not much though man those cars are faster whoever's who is it logano said them cars are lights out he's right yeah i mean bowman he's been struggling a little bit here today he just went to fifth place so maybe those adjustments grey guys is making a little bit more track position is bringing that 48 car up to his teammates but larry as you've always told us you don't worry about the sunlight the nighttime's the right time and greg ive's car for alex bowman just seems to be getting better and better and better now there's no question it's one of the cars that probably struggled a little bit in the beginning and now as you mentioned mike in the top five but honestly with what i'm seeing with kyle larson mike it's what we've seen the last few years here at the coca-cola 600. if you're good at the beginning you're still good at the end we saw with martin trex jr in 2017 we saw it with kyle busch in 2018. you know you just brought it up larry mark drex jr i'm i'm a little surprised right now he's down in 17th we've seen him go you know just just completely dominate this 600 i know some cars and and rules have changed but i'm still pretty surprised we see kyle bush up there in fourth position so joe gibbs racing has some good race cars hamlin seven i would have thought that the 19 be higher up look at this battle for the lead willie b going underneath kyle larson lead here the 600 how about that kyle tried to keep him squeezed down right there but power moved kept the throttle down and that isn't easy to do with a car that close and running there oh willie's going to join us for the uh i racing extravaganza wednesday night looking forward to that that'll be a lot of fun on wednesday night on the windshield william byron cole convict our air force staff sergeant who was lost in a training mission at age 29 he was from cedar hill texas married his wife rachel they have two children and he had started online classes with liberty university that's the tie to this team and was lost in a training mission at age 29. second time william byron has led tonight first time for three laps this was a power move to take the lead right here though i mean the time before i believe is during a green flag sequence of pit stops right here boy he ran down that five car kyle larson and was able to make that pass we've been seeing rudy fugo and and william byron just continue to gel and and have the chemistry and make the right adjustments and keep that car strong throughout the whole race in this season that's been impressive and boy this might be one of the most impressive runs i've seen them have so far absolutely now we've talked about 10 or more pit stops tonight teams have 13 sets of tires athleticism on pit road is at a premium and regan has more well mike it is that a huge premium and imagine having to make your first cup pit stops during the coca-cola 600 when we're gonna make so many of these pit stops that's the case for josh bush you see him right there on the screen he's actually filling in for the normal right rear tire changer on the number three of austin dillon used to play college at wake forest played professional football for the denver broncos what a super bowl i was a big fan of the broncos still am loved that game right there well he basically started change entire seven months ago for the first time this is the quickest that rcr has ever had a pit crew guy get called up him and austin dillon they met seven months ago roughly at a charity event austin talked him into coming out and trying out for it here he is now from the super bowl all the way to the coke 600. how awesome is that is so cool you can see he did not want that camera he's like let me get through this night my first night but i gotta say though we just can't speak highly enough of the athleticism and you know there's so many guys on pit road that pit stop these cars change tires carry tires or jack these cars that have backgrounds somewhat similar to that college football background maybe they did an nfl tryout or they've been super bowl champion that's that's the first didn't get any bigger speaking of champions kevin armica is on fifth row little early for a scheduled stop jamie yeah mike he's been running top five all night then he said i have a little bit of damage on the front and then he said he had a loose wheel he tried to hang on about four laps and said it was getting too bad they had the pit dang it those guys were having such a good run right here they can still come back from there this might you never know when the costume will come out how this might good play right back back in their hand we've seen it before so william byron is your new leader in charlotte north carolina with 163 left to go let's take a look at who's ahead of the pack sponsored by coyote william byron started fourth currently first seventh in the standings he had been as high as second one win and 11 top tens all consecutively from coyote tractor so ryan newman completes his screen flag pit stop another lead lap cars and we have drivers like um ryan blaney who's in 13th and matthew benedetto in 17th uh they both took the wave around on that last caution flag to get back on the lead lap and that's paying dividends now helped him out a bunch was an unfortunate situation with blainey with that loose wheel kind of similar to what we just saw with kevin harvey so uh you know the right the the caution at the right time to get that lap back and here comes truax on the pit road probably scheduled pit stops about to begin martin truax has hardly been in the top 10 all day what are they trying to improve reagan well mike the last pit stop they spend a little bit of extended time on pit road massive adjustments on that race car trying to set it up for the end of the race you see him here short stopping stopping just a little bit he won't be the only one here comes joey logano to the pit lane and i believe that's bubba wallace behind him stops right here they just kind of keep stopping a little earlier a little earlier and just split the stage up ryan blaney's in two and so is eric jones jamie yeah it's interesting we heard a lot of crew chiefs earlier on expect this track to tighten up but joey logano is saying it's freeing up so he is just too loose he wants a significant adjustment you saw right there with the four tires as well regan kyle busch has been happy all night long with that race car the problem is it's just not quite fast enough to get up there and take the lead they asked him what he needed of the car he said nothing it's good it's just all we got vince well the limit of denny hamlin just have not been able to find the sweet spot with this balance tonight just a little bit too loose through three and four chassis adjustment there four tires and fuel for denny hamlin trying to keep himself inside the top 10. so a little difficulty on the right front on the kyle bush stop jamie larson has led 185 laps so far tonight the adjustments have been good but they haven't had a whole lot to do a lot of air pressure adjustments for this five part same this time chase ellie his teammates these two have been battling back and forth chassis adjustment you saw there the wrench in the rear window and four tires stopped for him so still on track reddit dylan the childress cars alfredo suarez and custer vince well the 24 william byron they are really happy with the crew chief rudy bugle just trying to stay ahead of the track a little bit but uh byron said last time it was the best it had been all night and we saw him take that lead from kyle larson run some laps so now it's up to tyler redick and austin dillon the two richard childress cars and anthony alfredo daniel suarez cole custer everyone else is pitted watch kyle bush's pit entry man how is he not speeding he looks pretty fast so at the yellow line there you have to be at pit road speed yellow line to yellow line just got it up well he actually slowed it down pretty good as he came off the bank and it just looked like he put a little more brake pressure in there and it just locked that tire up so not so sure that uh he was actually carrying a lot of speed across the yellow line but just being extra cautious here that's what happens when you get on the brakes in the middle the banking on tyler ready saw that car jump sideways and you also didn't see the front tires locked up got plenty of room breaking that baby so your leader comes to pit road leaving his teammate austin dillon out on the racetrack and with the lead vince well and tyler came into this race on the playoff bubble they could not afford a misstep here tonight and they have been solid it's about a two loose so they're going to snug him up just a bit otherwise he's been going in the right direction another solid effort from this rcr group tonight let's see let's see how this old football veteran you mean that super volleyball champion watch him in action and he's on the rear tires is that correct [Music] there's the change got some fast hands on him right stun got around the car fast how fast he got around that thing oh we barely got that last night so anthony alfredo from richfield connecticut is your race leader he was last in the pits at lap 203 he and daniel suarez currently 10 are the only drivers on the lead lap who have not stopped in this sequence martin truex on much fresher tires trying to unlap himself truex the first car one lap down stinh look at stenhouse get that big run go to that position very important right here oh i don't think truax liked that much look again the alfredo's coming to pit road there he's trying to get down so he's in and kyle larson will cycle back to the lead so hats off yeah that's off to that five team you know think about they came in a lap earlier that the 24 of william byron didn't have a big lead on the five and by coming in one lap earlier having a nice pit stop that's all it took to get the five the lead back and i'm telling you and i can't emphasize enough the importance of that number one pit stall and the job they did yesterday qualifying if it push comes to shove and it comes down to pit stops i'm telling you that could be the winning combination [Music] so on and off pip road between the two hendrick teammates about the same but kyle larson's crew eight tenths of a second quicker and the driver 1.8 seconds quicker there's the difference yeah and it's interesting if that's i want to see where that driver is you know obviously there's so many things that come into that and how he comes on how good job it does in there getting in and out of the box is so important all those things add into that equation big night for the pit crews being part of a winning equation in charlotte more kitchens than maybe anybody in charlotte a meatball slider rican let him off the hook pretty good there i'm just wanting this regan does he like just go knock on their door and say hey i'm here let's let's shoot this and they they don't have a choice but to let them in maybe good job reagan vince how about daddy well remember denny hamlin was outside the top 10 for most of that early part of the race and then they made that two-tier pit stop and that got them inside the top ten in fact ran toward the front eventually lost some positions on those two tires but has been holding steady at seven the big issue for hamlin right now he just can't put the throttle down the way he needs they've still got a lot of laps to go they've still got some adjustments to make if he's to contend for the win tonight been watching him it looks nervous getting into the corner and then it looks like he uses a lot of real estate on the exit so maybe loose in and tied off jeff yeah and that's something that hey how many times have you fought that condition and so hard to fix it once you once you get to this stage of the race and you've already had practice to try to work on it at this point it is hard to fix that and then you got to try to relay the right information all right which one's hurting you the worst yes all of them you know guys we're hearing more and more cars you heard jamie little talk about joey logano being loose now you just heard vince welch talking about danny hamlin all the years of coming here under the lights you knew the car was going to tighten up but now the way these cars are locked down the racetrack they get freer and it's not that the rear loses grip it's just the front gains a lot more grip than the rear and makes the car free or loose yeah and you know to me and you can attest to this it seems like as we've gone to splitters that's where i've seen the way the air flows under that front end and maybe it's just the job that the teams have done to get more front grip in these cars it's trended that way over the last several years well it's got more grip but you go faster you go on faster you're going to plant that nose more gets that splitter down just like you're talking about makes it work better hey who's coming is kyle busch from third place his lap times equal that of the leader and picking them up putting them down some like it some don't it's the coca-cola 600 on fox our fox nascar team remembers their family members who served as we come to 124 laps to go in the coca-cola 600. kyle larson leading william byron by 1.6 seconds there a look at the trilogy front stretch of this quad oval in concord north carolina had a little close call here with uh aussie james davison maybe a little help a little straighten him right back up and here's davidson's radio yeah we got it you're not gonna like it but you're gonna like that save you're not gonna like what started it and honestly i agree with him those both of those cars are seven laps down that's probably uncalled for james davison carrying a navy seal joshua harris on the windshield of his car from lexington north carolina not far from the speedway who died in afghanistan he was special warfare operator first class with the navy seals lost at age 36 a highly decorated combat veteran bubba wallace having a nice drive he is just outside the top 10 in 11th place regan well mike that's right where he's been the majority of the ninth is right around 10th 11th 12th having a good run with the car just now started having a little handling issues the front end is getting on the left front too hard getting into the corners getting them loose getting them very tight off the corner spoke to crew chief mike wheeler before the race started he felt like they would be good tonight but he said the key is we have to finish this race off and get the good result to start helping bubba's confidence if we can get his confidence where we need it then we're going to be good the rest of the year thanks regan team 2311 remembering army staff sergeant tony velasquez from san diego lost in iraq at age 29 along with 15 others when their helicopter was shot down velasquez survived by a wife and three young children we just saw denny hamlin and tyler reddick battling for sixth place little lap traffic here the licky on the outside alfredo up front well that's all it took you know it's such a momentum track right now all you do is check out the slightest amount like danny hamlin did and tyler reddick was to stay wide open almost make this pass he crossed the wake of alfredo right there front end took off on him had to bail out of the gas yeah you're right yeah i thought he completely had that made not so fast alfredo now a lap down after that pitch strategy where they uh stayed out to the end of the green flag cycle hoping to catch a caution but didn't in fact we've only had one caution today other than the stage end cautions and that was when kurt busch lost an engine in his chip ganassi chevrolet kyle larson now holding a 2.3 second lead jamie i talked to his crew chief cliff daniels before the race and he said what i'm looking at we shouldn't have a big temperature swing tonight like we typically do and he was right it's only dropped seven degrees since the start of this race when the sun was up this car has been pretty neutral as he runs though he gets just a little bit tight and that has been the trend for him from the start of this race to now but the car overall really good [Music] pulling up on eric jones and jones last car on the lead lap at this moment with 15 to go in the stage we're gonna take you back side by side when it comes to new comedies fox animation takes the cup get revved up for monday's brand new night of laughs with the premiere of house broken these pets have issues and lisa kudrow leads an all-star cast to the house broken premiering tomorrow on fox hey hey look at this guys this lead is heating up again oh will it be lost it under that green flag stop he's coming back got loose right there larson maybe he just seems to struggle a little bit more traffic it looks like eric jones back to that uh tail end of the lead lap position here well that's about that's played a big role you're right mike he's been fighting hard to stand the lead lap making uh this really difficult on kyle larson that's what's really close the gap here for william byron you know you've called him all willy bee at least twice tonight i mean it's boyer's birthday if you want to talk about old you know byron is still in college okay so i don't think it's him he's definitely not old and that's except careful willie b and i think you were right that 43 was holding him up now he's pulling back the telemetry in on the two leaders so you can compare steering wheel angle in yellow throttle in green and speed and rpm breaking red if they use it probably won't as you can see i mean they're definitely having to get out of throttle a good bit see here down in three four you see two different grooves boston up high the 24 of iron and down low he saw a little bit less steering angle because of that and byron just touching the brake a little entering turn three to set the car all right make sure it's there a little confidence break there kyle larson just became the first driver to break 1 000 laps led this season and he's led a bunch of them but he's only got one win to go with that you know i just you brought up a great point and brought me right back to the seat of the car so easy to touch that great pedal mike and it's it's it's kind of it loads the car underneath of you it sets that front end helps turn the car but it also kills speed and it's honestly something you said it it was just very ever so slightly on the pedal but it still scrubs speed something that's very hard not to do on attraction oh ryan newman in the wall well what that might just say blainey and truex because they were the next cars in the sights of the five of larson fourth caution lap 296. tires certainly down and ryan newman running 12. just pancaked that car it's the end of this run [Music] dude oh you can see right there right right right there at the end of the run be interesting to see what happens here by the way into this what what i was what was interesting is that big run that he had on the 22 and the four so this is uh this is probably going to end this stage under caution i know joey legano is glad he did he wasn't any further beside him when that happened and eric jones for all that fighting he will get the free pass being the first car one left that's exactly why you fight that hard for those positions had he given that up a lot sooner he probably would not have been getting the free pass note the side walls on the tires as they are being changed of course the goodyear lettering is yellow but goodyear has very special honor and remember in white and red on the sidewalls of all of these race tires as we so do during memorial day weekend they're a very special tribute i'm sure some of those tires are going to find their way to charity auctions around the area following this weekend's use in the 600 we've seen goodyear do some really cool things on the sidewalls some throwback uh blue stripes and uh but none of them are more special in the honor remember that they put on these sidewalls here today oh got the gloves off might be snacking on something hard to open a granola bar package with your gloves on mike what did he go through the drive-through what well he's 40 laps down too so he's just getting hungry i don't blame him all right so this will be the end of this stage and leave us with a hundred laps to go i've actually been on that side of this vent and there is nothing more gruesome than having trouble with the first of this thing grueling i mean having trouble with the first of a 600 mile race and after riding around there limping around it's pain nothing worse i'm going to put weight on in that situation i need another granola bar i think i've had hot dogs you name it in this race hey next week we're going california dreaming we're going to sonoma one of our favorite race tracks sure on fs1 not just the racetrack either mike oh no would you like a little cheese with that one hey wait a minute oh there's only one there's two drivers up here that we thought oh there's another driver up here oh my god and this will not be televised with historic transactions we're gonna tell it we're telling you oh yeah and we're gonna determine expecting big things out of you now we're gonna have some fun absolutely well so are we gonna be sure to [Music] oh mike's something on the 18 radio you don't hear every day kyle busch being quite the cheerleader in here take a listen to this we just see the person here what we got here you know like if something happens maybe we got a shot but the front door seemed uh yeah i love how he put that quite stout yeah kyle bush is the last driver to sweep the first three stages of the 600 2018 he started on the pole won all three stages and the race oh and the i i can't wait for a butt in there somewhere not every day you get passed by a drone check that out [Music] so they'll come around for the end of stage three kyle larson william byron kevin harvick will get the final stage point in tenth bubba wallace for night kyle larson is a stage winner again [Music] lots of pre-race pageantry and now pit stops reagan accomplished needing just a little bit more security on entry with the back of that race car rear grip getting into the corners a little tight in the exit vince upper right-hand portion of the screen william byron's gotten tight needs to turn better without losing the back end small adjustment jamie chase elliott said this car this run is an upgrade i can get it to do whatever i want but they still made a chassis adjustment the five of kyle larson said i needed to maneuver a little bit better looks like he stayed on out front mike kyle larson leads him off that road kind of stop right there kyle bush carrying the name of derrick holland army national guard specialist from windgap pennsylvania killed by a roadside bomb in zoromet afghanistan that struck his humvee at the age of 20. he just wanted to do his part serving his country said his supervisor kyle bush honoring his memory tonight yeah doing them proud right now style them up hey kyle bush jeff the boys up in the fox sports booth you got us yes sir well man i hear you're in an exceptionally good mood tonight i love it so we wanted to dial you up um i know you think those guys ahead of your stout but hey you just gained an extra spot on pit road how are you going to get it done tonight get your second 600 win i'm gonna have to wreck them they're too fast man i don't know we'll see what happens it's uh obviously 100 to go so um you know we've been working on our eminem's camry here just a little bit tonight and uh it's been pretty good really all day long we've only been just tweaking on it and uh getting what we can get here so feel really good about it just gotta try to outsmart these guys a little bit somehow maybe or uh just settle for a third probably well we know that you don't settle for that so i know you're gonna keep it exciting and we're looking forward to following along good luck the rest of the way thank you first time we've heard from the penalty police tonight we'll update that in a moment kyle bush now in second place fox sports is proud to support dreams for veterans a program granting final dreams for our service men and women providing them comfort and closure at the end of life visit dreams for veterans dot org to give and learn how you can help 96 laps to go with the coca-cola 600 kyle larson your race leader under caution here at the end of stage three the only race that has four stages eric almarola racing here tonight memorializing master at arms second class navy seal michael monsoor from long beach california in iraq mansour was killed when the rooftop he and other soldiers were positioned a grenade was thrown on top of that roof he jumped on top of the grenade absorbing the blast saving the lives of his comrades he was posthumously awarded the medal of honor and the uss michael monsoor guided missile destroyer was named in his honor pit stop penalties ryan blaney too fast entering and bubble wallace equipment interference watch what happens to this right front tire or right rear tire as it rolls into chris bush's pit and into their gas man so they will start tail end oh man such a strong run he had going so got some got some making up to do now bubba and it's a bad bad roll they hit those tires hit each other on the roll that's just a circumstantial deal and unfortunately all right coming to the trilogy front stretch for this restart 94 laps to go at the line big jump for copper on the outside right there huge restart by kyle busch oh brad kaye backing up in the middle big push from the outside by the nine of chase elliot you see kyle busch bottomed out right there couldn't try the crossover and there he is for the lead against larson well we knew he wasn't going to go down he uh necessarily this is the right place to be either though yeah this might cost them even second position if chase ellie can get there man he's trying they're coming from every angle both sides well if it's the kyle and kyle show they have finished one two four times bush winning each of those and you can see the front end this bottoms out takes off up the race track just the same way it did a lap before but you got to love the effort by kyle busch man he gave it everything he had he knew he knew he would and where did it go look at rick hendricks camaros one through four not anymore almost kyle bush coming back and i think when the air pressure gets built up a little bit you'll see that bottom and out washing up go away so close and he timed it just perfect this might this might just clear kyle bush no kyle fight back and chase elliott had a run at the lead and had to get way out of the throttle here comes byron for second well you got closed you got to take every opportunity when the momentum shifts like that you got to try to take try to take advantage of it oh wow that was that's a great that was a cool move by the night of chase ellie he really got out of his mirror and just dove to the bottom hoping that he couldn't block it but i'll tell you what he almost got him off guard he did catch him off guard he dove down there and that car almost snapped well that door slammed and almost fell off its hinges hey that's that's the aggression that you got to do though you can't let a guy like chase elliot net nine car the momentum you know we talked about momentum the importance of that those boys are fresh off the win last weekend you let him around it could be the last time you see [Applause] so kyle busch breaking up the hendrick parade at the front in fourth hamlin in sixth in a toyota otherwise it's all chevy's one through eight with the fastest forwards being logano and ninth and chris bush are in tenth coming around to the front stretch for an applebee's crank it up [Music] clear good work good work [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] not stalling to the 41.5 [Music] hey 317 laps chase elliott in second trying to find somewhere on this track that he might be quicker than teammate kyle larson how hard is that to do jeff when you know you're running equipment that's every bit as good as what you have it's the same as what you have yeah but i think actually right now the nine of chase elliot hasn't been faster race car than the five of larson we've seen where he's easily been been able to pull in that gap and get right there but we also saw one moment for chase ellie coming off of turn four the last time by he almost got in the wall he had a little bit wide and he lost a little bit of ground so i think he's being very aggressive right now because he knows his car's better than kyle larson's and kyle larson's might continue to get better 82 laps and at least one pit stop to go before we complete 600 miles in charlotte fox nascar is sponsored by credit one bank the official credit card of nascar well that means it's time for the credit one bank ones to watch hey william byron's had an incredible night he's been strong he's been up front leading you know that 24 car knows how to get it done here in the past and uh get to victory lane the 600 but he if he does win will be the only time somebody from charlotte north carolina gets the victory in the 600. you know jeff i love the way kyle busch was talking on that radio earlier and mile and a half tracks they've been right in his wheelhouse this year four top tens three top fives including that win at kansas i like kyle bush but regardless it may come down to what happens on this pit stop at about 20 or 25 to go folks i'm not gonna lie to you they let me pick first so i'm picking who's running first kyle larson he's gonna do it and this is why three second place finishes the last time he finished second three times in a row guess what he won the pull guess what he did yesterday he won the pull he's on three a row of three three second place finishes i think he's gonna win again just like he did back then well it's hard to argue with the chevrolet so i'm gonna go with tyler reddick he's been lurking just outside the top five we've still got another pit stop to go if somebody should falter ahead of him don't be surprised if reddick challenges for his first career win in last year's coca-cola 600 chase elliott made a pit stop just before overtime and brad keselowski ended up with the win so here's chase trying to do one of the very few things his hall of fame father never did win the coca-cola 600. now that's your credit one back ones to watch a bunch of good picks there guys i like it of course clint might have an upper hand slightly by going first in this one it's his birthday we haven't let him now i'm a charity yes you are but you get up to those numbers you are it was a pretty good battle for eighth place between denny hamlin and chris busher which prompted hamlin's crowd to say but you know look at this 11 team right they're struggling what he's saying what i got is not good and he's still in eighth place that's the kind of season this 11 team has had this year is where they they've just been they're such a good race team and and they're always right there in the hunt but but to actually surpass that and try to you know get to the victory lane that's what they got to work on they just can't quite get there chris busher one spot behind him in ninth place has hung around the top ten pretty much all night regan well mike a very nice run for chris busher right now this team found something at the end of practice yesterday that really or two days ago that really helped him out turned three in particular he was struggling through the bumps they made an adjustment the last run they almost didn't have time well whatever that adjustment was it's working out good he told me this morning he thought that it would be good for the whole race and it has been so far right behind buster kevin harvick second forward in the race what's top five the first half of the race currently tenth they remember he had that loose wheel had to pit early ever since then he's been just a little bit off [Music] brad kazowski last year's winner right behind harvick in 11th and don't forget how that happened with brad keselowski late caution some strategy i'm telling you this race could change if that happens here again how about the 19 to mark church junior struggling you hear a little bit of frustration in his teammate 11 radio chatted right there i think you're probably going to hear the same thing from martin not the kind of knight that we've seen out of him in the past ricky steadhouse hanging tough he qualified on the outside pole and some theorized they might have had that part two trimmed out for the race trying to get him a good qualifying spot well yes to that and no to that because here's stenhouse 13th holding up just fine brian blaney trying to overcome a speeding penalty on the last pit stop in 14. and right behind him bubba wallace who had that equipment penalty on the same pit stop they're both working their way back up toward the front they're the last cars on the lead lap mate benedetto for the wood brothers is the first car one lap down let me tell you something i've been watching this cory lejoy right here in the seventh guard doing a great job man i'm sorry there he is there he is right there yeah uh man in front of some pretty big company right there i mean i don't know what happened to legano there but just looking down through here suarez the kind of year they've had michael mcdowell three ton of 500 winner custer amarola briscoe ahead of all those guys check this out for second play or third place i think maybe some some slower traffic well left traffic once again becomes a factor yeah you can see william byers quiet ways out there but he gets side by side stalls out with windhouse stall holy cow look at how much momentum the 18 was able to gain through those guys running side by side listen to the rpm pick up inside that car you can hear it and as much as it picked up on the 18 is how much it dropped on the pick 100 you mentioned la joy ahead of logano who had a pit stop for a tire going down an extra stop back about lap 320 now green flag stops for the leaders should be coming fairly soon 64 laps to go [Music] martin truax cut down a tire and then trying to get that car to pit road it uh blew the hood flap up and off on the left side which will need to be reinstalled and replaced but we stay green with kyle arson leading chase ellie truex was 12th when that happened davio suarez on fifth road just a little early but this would be his scheduled stop let's take a look at biggest movers of this race since it began chris bush are up 18 spots from where he qualified and remember this is i think only the third race this year fourth race this year where we've had qualifying there's the second place change what's going on with the nine of chase elliot here he's lost second and third and your usa biggest movers there were on the screen led by buscher man we are seeing where lap traffic has played some crucial roles in some of these positions here late in this run in particular that one yeah it's just bad timing he got to him right in the middle of corner really had to check up allow kyle bush to get side by side and then complete this pass down into one i mean josh balicki doing all he can do but he is 15 laps down and i guess all you can ask of one of those cars is hold your line don't be in the way here's byron coming to pit road the money stops no mistakes vince well if there's been one area that this team has struggled with it's been to make the right adjustment on the last pit stop or two of the night so this is a big stop for the 24. williams getting so much better at knowing what he needs late in the race and crew chief rudy fuegle said this is the one where we've got to make that last adjustment to go get the leaders and get the win we'll see if they hit the home run denny hamlin's crew finishing up and here comes kyle bush to pit road and chase elliott regan ben b sure just ask kyle busch what do you need in your car we're close he said nothing it's good kyle remains happy in that race car together the jaime house bowman is in as well as the nine chase elliott he had that close call on track he's on the right front too much hearing that from the 48 as well said he just burned up the right trucks he took off two free the last one kevin harvick in as well he is too tight on the other side kyle larson as well makes his way down this car has just been good small adjustments all night long balance is pretty good here a little bit tight when he gets in traffic but it's done exactly what he's won in this pit crew has gotten it done let's see if they can get it done here once again regan austin dillon remains fast all night long this run just a little bit too tight with the nose of the race car wanted to go back on his last changes benedetto in along with corey lejoy reddick kozlowski and blaney staying out on the racetrack incredible battle going on right here guys 24 of william byron we saw it [Music] man these slowing cars are really really costing a lot of these guys here comes chase elliott into this so william beyer was already on the track he's short pitted right and he had a run got to the outside of the 18 went three wide through three and four through traffic that was extremely close and now chase elliott able to make that move on william byron man these slower cars i i just wish there was something more that they could do there's a heck of a race going on here it wasn't just a little bit slower either right in that preferred lane here comes chase elliott chase elliot coming back after kyle bush for fifth place wow huge move right there well that nine is hooked up but we saw this the front side of that last one kyle busch really struggled it seems like when the air pressures were low keep the front end pointed as it builds up he kept getting faster and faster on the long run leader tyler reddick comes to pit road ryan blaney assumes the lead sorry lost the nose right there again had to lift i wonder if that car is on the splitter a little bit on lower air pressure it just doesn't wall there it lost big time yeah chase elliot just ran his fastest lap of the race and blaney locks him up coming to pitt road and will surrender the lead back to larson wow byron and bush racing hard for fourth place let's go back to that running through traffic that's got to be frustrating wow man i tell you what that that was just some some great driving by all these guys just racing hard trying to navigate through that traffic trying to race for position knowing how important track position is and by all of them you said it you know hold on how many 66 star out there are three four believe it or not that's the same one man i didn't mean to interrupt you clinton i'm thinking the same it's pretty bad and while all that was going on kyle larson had a nice clean green flag stop on off pit road that team has just done everything right so far now 47 to go is everything going to go right for this team the rest of the way cliff daniels has to do right now you see him on the right side of the screen thinking about all the what-if situations what if the caution comes out with 20 to go what if it comes out 10 to go that's what he has to be thinking about right now so larry you have a trend for us you know i have a trend mike i looked at the last four coke 600 since we've been stage racing the average of the last caution left 355 which is about two laps from now that's 45 to go but twice in those four races it happened in the last 10 laps in fact the last two years and we had one overtime finish that was last year mike and that's where brad keselowski stayed out and won the race when other leaders pitted well kyle larson has done everything but win when he has dominated the race the stat boys have a whole book on when he's led more than 200 300 laps when he's won two stages three stages he's done everything except get it to the finish line first that is the one remaining objective and and i i gotta believe that nobody we talked to kyle larson right at the pre-race he knows that finishing second third is not a terrible thing that's that's a good thing that means that you're close but i know one thing he wants to get out of those stats are all these ones about lead more than 200 laps leading all winning all these stages and you know not winning a race over ford or my all those things he wants to check that off as one and the only way to do that is to get that win here tonight so in 400 mile races he has six wins an average finish of 12. 500 mile races no wins average finish at 17th and in the cook 600 which he has not won average finish outside the top 20. so come on fellas tonight's the night oh i think it is and furthermore you saw those stats and i said it you know the guy that i picked and kyle larson those three second places in a row in 2017. he won the poll when he won in california he won the pull here it's an omen i think the stars are lined up for the kid but it's just like it always says man when he gets down to those last hundred laps of this race and you have a knight like he's having it's always that old right hook you don't know where it's coming from and when it is that's a very good point what larry said so we're gonna go double wide here so you're willing to light the candles but are you willing to share the cake with kyle larson kyle larson 38 laps to go leading teammate chase elliott by 2.7 seconds we celebrate first responders who provide life-saving work every day former air force captain current amr safety team neurologist dr bert vargas shares his story sponsored by verizon frontline air force core values of integrity service of excellence really just apply to not not just the work that i do but to life in general my military service really gave me some of my earliest exposures to to the issue of traumatic brain injury in the military it's that background that has led to my interest in concussion and translated to what has become among the best oversight protocols in in professional sports thanks dr vargas verizon frontline and the entire amr safety team for keeping nascar drivers and their crews safe all season long i can tell you every time i've ever hit a wall or anything the first person you see after being checked up for your vitals is him with his little ipad and a you know concussion protocol survey test that you have to take and you know it keeps you on your game i mean honestly you take it prior to so there's a baseline and then after you know they get done checking all your vitals like i said you're gonna pass that again and he's the one that makes a decision or not whether you're good or not so neat to have those guys down there that's a big measure from the time that i started in racing to now that we have yeah oh we've come so far so far right since the early days of nascar when the track doctor at certain facilities was a gynecologist now i'm going to tell you for me from for for me though mike it was uh in the off season my baseline test i barely passed so but i don't have anything else for that one you took my whole train of thought away and meanwhile there's good racing on the racetrack all right here's tonight's progressive race summary kyle larson one of 13 leaders he's been out in front for 294 laps 23 lead changes 16 cars on the lead left just four caution flags including the three stage breaks all three stages one by the number five this is the most critical part right here at the 32 laps to go and we're seeing the five kyle larson he just seems to be a little bit more maneuverable able to clear some of these slower cars but i'm telling you it doesn't take long to close that gap two seconds seems like maybe a lot it doesn't take but one or two cars that you're trying to lap to close that two second gap if you're chase elliot so you're watching those you're trying to do your job make sure you get through flap traffic as fast as you can and you're looking out ahead of you to see how kyle larson is doing and hope you can get an advantage and close that gap well chevrolet took eight of the top ten spots in qualifying you notice now things are a little more evenly distributed six bow ties in the top ten kyle bush's toyota in the forwards of buscher and harvick and denny hamlin's toyota you know i would say other than truex and i know now church has had that tire issue he was the one surprised i kind of expected the chevrolet's especially the hidden chevrolets to be strong pretty pretty certain that kyle bush was going to be strong but truex is the one surprise that i've had that i thought he was going to be much further up there maybe be the best toyota throughout this race and you bring up a great point every year and i'm talking right back to my career there was always a race where then gibbs boys would show up you know what race it was the koch 600 right here in charlotte yeah guys we were talking in our pre-race show about the toyota camp and i just felt like even though they didn't qualify well that they were going to have good race speed i mean they've won four of the last six coca-cola 600s with three different drivers but i just think these cooler temperatures and the grip that this racetrack has they maybe have just a little too much downforce in those toyota cameras and that's exactly right and what i think and what i meant by that let me go on a little bit more what i said i'm not saying that they've never been there on the front side of a run but i'm telling you usually when they make a bid for a championship it all kind of starts here it's for whatever reason whether it's a horsepower thing or a body thing something they find something that charlotte didn't show up with at home and it's lights out the rest of the year i want to take you way back may 29 1960. lee petty wins at orange county speedway rougemont north carolina and petty enterprises because the winningest team in nascar history and they have been ever since that date in 1960. now they are tied with hendrick motorsports and should kyle larson or chase elliott or william byrne or alex bowman go to victory lane tonight that will change for the first time in over 50 years jamie and what a night it has been for hendrick motorsports there's mr h mr hendrick on the right side of your screen i've been watching him tonight and he's been walking from one kick to the next checking in on each team talking to picture members looking at the stats and what the teams are looking at to think back what this team was able to do two weeks ago at dover to sweep first through fourth and to see where they're running right now to know that they could do that if bowman gets around kyle busch they will be first through fourth knowing hendrick motorsports is right up the street unbelievable to be rick hendrick right now their huge campus right near where harry hyde prepared their one and only car in 1985 and that team was one race away from going out of business when jeff bodine scored win number one at martinsville virginia and i said 50 years it's been 61 years since petty enterprises took the lead for all-time wins well i can tell you what i've known rick kendrick a long time he's a very humble guy but i i can tell you the message been set very clear of how important it is to get to 269 and how much he would love to do it right here there's that hendrick motorsports campus and close to 600 employees right there just down the street as jamie mentioned and how proud that group would be where are you pull that off i'll be in that photo if it happens tonight 23 laps to go in the 62nd coca-cola 600. 18 laps to go here saturday on fox one of the greatest rivalries in sports red sox yankees or dodgers braves or cubs giants saturday 7 eastern on fox and the box sports app check local listings beautiful night in charlotte aerial coverage provided by goodyear drive always discovers possibility goodyear more driven joey logano off sequence because he had an unscheduled stop at lap 320. so this would be his scheduled final stop of the night i believe [Music] logano one lap down now two [Music] 14 cars on the lead lap down to bubba wallace everyone else now two or more laps down yeah pretty nice battle going on here see tyler reddick oh that thing gets loose you could tell he was trying to get down and sort of put some you know dirty air to the nose of that 17 to chris busher and as he tried to do that pull that wheel the back of that car swung around vince haven't been able to get that car tightened up in the reddit camp it has been uncomfortable all night not just handling the car but also in the car for tyler reddick he's uh in a new seat insert this week and it has been super uncomfortable around the ribcage so he has have been dealing with that as well so imagine an uncomfortable car in the way it handles and then having to drive it through 600 miles when you don't feel playing right well one of those plays into the other you have a loose race car like this it always my lower back i don't know about you jeff but when i had a really loose race car while you were working that wheel especially in a very long race like this i mean you're always kind of get stiff anyway but man if that thing was loose for whatever reason i always hurt my back and if you had a new answer that your back's not used to be even worse i'm a little surprised that they would go down that path of a new insert at a 600 mile race i'd probably try that thing out a little bit maybe a 400 mile race about the second place battle chase elliott and william byron two laps ago it got really close well remember we saw something oh he got it yeah he got it yeah he hit it that'd be interesting i want to see this right rear quarter panel here hopefully that thing makes it to the end yeah the last time we saw something like that was christopher bell he had the tire go down but you know we saw that it really wasn't that towards the beginning of this from the last run when we saw the nine of ellick really battling hard to try to get that lead away from kyle larson and he got real wide off of turn four so i think that car gets tight in that area when somebody's in in front of him and that's exactly what happened right there plus he's trying to in the throttle because he sees william byron working on him and william byron complete this pass and here comes kyle busch into the mixes these two are battling it out second place battle drawing kyle bush towards him as we get down to 10 laps to go next time bye boy that's something those two don't want to see is that 18 on their bumper and there he is he just won't go away that's kyle busch man just keeps fighting [Music] 24 gonna be under tight still there still there 24. outside nine top coverage half covered it'll be second [Music] 78 ahead b.j mccloud and kyle tries for the middle well kyle you're gonna try to use this outside and that traction compound there you go in the wall [Music] should be able to slide up in front of where byron there he goes so william ran that bottom lane just not as much grip then he comes up sees that kyle bush is coming and stayed off pretty nice slide but he didn't get in the wall this shows you when those cars get close to one another he took the air off the back of williams car got him loose but william was pulling up he was moving up trying to uh take that run away from kyle busch and doing so took the air off his and about turn him around right right i'd say chase ellis a little bit vulnerable because of that that little bit of contact he had with that outside wall is that effect in his race car right now i think william byron's actually a little bit better than both of these guys more than likely making it tight right with chase elliot and this battle is kyle larson's best friend because he's now pulled out to a nearly 10 second lead he can take his time with the traffic and maybe that ticking clock of inevitability can stop well it's his best friend and not his best friend just as close as those guys are battling and swapping and bumping and banging man you don't want that to bring out of caution either kyle larson only fifth on the all-time list of most laps led in the 600. well if you're cliff daniels sitting there watching this on the broadcast and watching everything that's going on you're watching that right rear damage with a nine car thinking oh gosh don't let that thing cut that tire down and be the caution third place oh byron used josh belicky has a pick that's not the first time we've seen some of that action tonight here's how that all started and left traffic oh yes at first it held up kyle busch and it allowed william byron to get a big run see that 53 of cody where he's about to get his best career finished tonight this is the one i was talking about yikes man the closing rate on some of these guys five to go it's like it breaks you back to jay and his steam engine what do you say 10 minutes to get that [Music] he looks nervous jeff he's just been around too long he knows do not let anything happen clint he looks like richard childress all those years on the day of the daytona 500 waiting to see if earnhardt could finally win it and in 1998 he did after losing it every way possible rick hendrick has first second fourth and fifth at the moment trying to displace petty enterprises as nascar's all-time winning and this is alex bowman closing in on william byram yeah he's had a front row seated all this action that's going on between the nine the 18 and the 24. that eighteen is up here this could be another one two three four finish it's gonna can you hold your breath for two laps i'll bet kyle larson can i think he's been holding the last 10 laps just trying everything he could do to get back to this white flag white flag one lap to go sponsored by credit one bank kyle larson trying for his first nascar win in a race longer than 400 miles and he's gonna pick nascar's longest night to do it and what a weird situation to get it done right with those three second places back in 2017 a pull and then go ahead and win the race gonna do it again right here 2021. kyle larson wins the coca-cola 600 rick hendrick career win 269. the irony of returning the number five to hendrick motorsports this year the number with which all-star racing owned by rick hendrick scored their first victory at martinsville with jeff fodon just the irony of that right to to go into the record books 269 with the number five car starting it out with the number five car to get to this place wow just meant to be and kyle larson three second places in a row and a pole for the second time in his career follows up that performance with a victory 28 year old from elk grove california scores his eighth career victory in his 238th cup start second of the season and he becomes the third driver to win more than once this year and the 53rd driver to win at charlotte 36th different driver to win the coca-cola 600. thank you buddy great job man great job spanked them good hendrick motorsports now has won two finishes in the last three races should be a combination of elation and relief for kyle larson he's going to be so happy that us in the tv in the media world are no longer going to be talking about all those stats about he's like get rid of those now jamie kyle larson said yesterday i just haven't been very good at the coke 600 and your crew chief told me we're going to change that tonight and boy did you you swept tonight what is the emotion the feeling right now kyle not only to win the coke 600 but to close it out dominate a race and get it done yeah it feels good it was not easy i felt like i had to fight off william and chase a lot it kind of worked out there that last run the 43 had to pit and pulled out in front of me and i just towed with him for a while and stretched my lead out and we had we had a good car there that last run so awesome feels great to to be the guy to help mr h break that record finally and just what a this is awesome we haven't we haven't seen this many fans in forever so um just thanks all you guys for coming out hoping to put on a good show um thanks to metro metro tech chevrolet hendrickcars.com everybody who uh who allows me to drive this five car and thanks to my five team too they were they were great tonight my pit crew did awesome um we had awesome pit stops especially on the green flag stops too so that really allowed us to get the win tonight kyle this year you kick it off with a brand new team a brand new organization for you we're halfway through the season you already have two wins what is it like how can you describe what this team is doing right now and what mr h has it's uh i remember you know when i when i got to talking to like ricky stenhouse last year i was like i think i'm gonna end up in the five or the hendrick cars and he was like you're gonna do really really good in that thing and i was like i don't know but it's been it's been better than i could have ever imagined for us to lead as many laps that we've had this year contend for as many wins as we have and now to get our second win a crown jewel event too it feels great so i'm just very lucky to that mr h was able to put a deal for me and it's just awesome i'm living a dream for sure kyle larson wins the coca-cola 600. [Music] kendrick motorsports four of the top five tonight and chase elliott finishes second in that rundown and i know there's some joy and the dominance that your organization has put forth but frustration and finishing second as well how how do you sum up the night tonight yeah just happy for the boss happy for uh kyle and cliff and everybody on the five team um they've been kicking ass since february so they deserve to win and rightfully so they did a great job tonight and ran a great race made no mistakes and the best car won so uh proud of hms man i feel like everybody's like i've been saying just pulling in the same direction and it's really showing so just proud of uh proud of our company um and excited as a nine team specifically for more opportunities ahead and try to get a little better and and uh see if we can't get dialed in thanks chase runner up for the third time this season chase ellie mike well rick hendrick and his people have long said we are not a four-car team we are one team with four cars 20 drivers have accounted for 269 career victories for hendrick motorsports more from charlotte after this martinsville virginia look at that red and white number five jeff bodine at the wheel harry hyde calling the shots where was car owner rick hendrick he was on the way home didn't think they had a chance to win that race got a phone call and hendrick motorsports was back in business tonight kyle larson win 287 putting henry motorsports atop the all-time nascar win list eclipsing the mark set by petty enterprises who had held that lofty position since 1960. tonight celebrates with his winning driver and we continue the celebration right here in charlotte uh we do have this cake there's not near enough candles on that cake not for boyer uh maybe this is for the henrik motorsports team what a night for them you know i've been a part of hindu motorsports as a driver for all the years and seen the dominance even i am just blown away how strong this organization is from all through all four cars right now congratulations to rick hendrick hendrick motorsports and kyle larson and and also greg daniels you know just just awesome win for sure you got to give credit where credit's due and hats off hendrick organization dominant performance has been for about a month my question is are you peaking too soon only halfway through the season pretty much there's a lot of racing left to go including a championship run through the playoffs so it's going to be interesting as we go through the latter part of the season and see how these guys do well jeff's first win was the hendrick 35th he added 92 more to that vince welch is with one happy car owner win number 269 for rick hendrick the all-time winningest owner in nascar history what does that mean it's almost an overwhelming statistic it really is i i you know number one richard petty petty's the king of nascar and he's done so much for the sport and we raised a lot of money for that door so but man this is so awesome i all i could think about was the first win and all the drivers i want to thank every driver that ever driven that won a race and the ones that didn't win but uh man it's been it's unbelievable i um i'm i'm really i can't really get it in my brain right now but because i just thought something's got to happen something's going to happen but man what a good job they did tonight and i'm just looking for the rest of the year but i'm glad 269 is over i'm glad it's over well done congratulations a very emotional rick hendrick with a very special landmark as kyle larson celebrates our charlotte studio will have more post race coverage for you right after this
