you're listening to dallas theological seminaries chapel podcast a clear voice in chaotic times this week is known as our Nathan Mayer Memorial Series in Bible exposition he used to be the Bible Conference and then a number of years ago a Nathan Mayer who went to be with the Lord through a tragic accident was remembered by friends and family they came to us and said could we underwrite this Bible exposition a week because of the love of that family for DTS many of our students used to work for Nathan and his wife Jean and then Jean later remarried after Nathan's death to David Dean and David has been a great friend of the seminary and as a couple they have built in to us at the seminary one of the ways is with family and friends to underwrite this week so we're deeply grateful for their ministry among us our speaker for this year's series is dr. Lance Solomon I'm gonna let him tell you more about his personal testimony but for 25 years he has served as the senior pastor at the McLean Bible Church in the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC where through and expositional ministry of preaching book by book through the Bible a mere 11,000 people attend every weekend to be fed his life is a marvelous example of God's power in action he has taught a Hebrew an Old Testament at Capitol Bible seminary who served on the board of Jews for Jesus since 1987 and so served two terms appointed by President Bush to serve in his administration as a member of the President's Committee on intellectual disabilities dr. Solomon has authored a book called brokenness how God redeems pain and suffering and he has a 30-minute Sunday radio broadcasts that he'll tell you more about in the way he preaches called so what those of us who had the privilege of dinner with him last night were thrilled to hear what God has done through the ministry and what they're doing at every level every generation he's married to his wife Brenda and they've been married since 1974 they have three children when at home and one grandchild and they currently reside in Fairfax Virginia dr. Solomon welcome to Dallas seminary we're delighted to have you may God bless your ministry among us would you join me in welcoming dr. Wong how are you good it's hot down here you know I was born and raised Jewish I went to Hebrew school as a kid I was bar Mitzvahed at age 13 both of my parents were Jewish all four of my grandparents were Jewish friends I'm as kosher as they come if you understand what I'm saying and after high school I went to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill we have any Tar Heel fans here god bless you and I joined the social fraternity when I got there I partied hard and then in 1968 I became deeply involved in the drug culture in Chapel Hill in fact I became a drug pusher as well as a drug user we smuggle dope in from Amsterdam and sold it on the streets of Chapel Hill and I put myself through the last two years of college selling dope in fact I thought you might like to see what I look like in those days so here's the slide of me and that's my hair now the problem is I consumed personally most of my profits and I would sit around campus all day and smoke marijuana and hashish and then we'd stay up all night and trip on LSD and mescaline or mushrooms as they're called today and you say well when did you go to class class what was class nobody went to class and you know I was doing all of this though for a reason and that is I was really trying to find some meaning to my life I was trying to find some purpose for my life I was trying to figure out why I existed on this earth and I was hoping that the drugs particularly the psychedelic drugs would help me find an answer to that question but of course they didn't all that happened was I got more depressed more frustrated and more introspective and then finally in 1971 I was I met a guy I was doing my fifth year in Chapel Hill my victory lap as we used to call it and I met a street preacher named Bob Eckhart one day in the spring of 1971 standing on the street of Chapel Hill giving out tracts and we struck up a friendship and he gave me the very first Bible that I ever owned and he challenged me to read it which I did now I didn't know where to start I didn't know if the Bible when introduction main body conclusion anticlimax I didn't know anything about this book so I figured well the best best thing to do is start at the beginning so in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth well I thought okay I can deal with that then I got to so and so begat so and so begat so and so and I thought oh my gosh how long does this go on I ought to switch to the New Testament and so I did and I started reading the Gospel according to Matthew again I started at the beginning and I got to a Matthew chapter 11 where Jesus said come to me all of you who are burdened down and heavy laden and I will give you rest you will find peace for your souls and I said bingo that is exactly what I'm looking for I don't think I could have put it into words as well as Jesus did but if he can do that for me that's what I'm looking for and so I got down on my knees first time I'd ever done that and I prayed this prayer I said now god I'm really not sure whether you exist and this Jesus character I am really confused about I said but you know my life is worthless I mean it's not worth a plug nickel to me I don't even know why I get up in the morning so here's what I'm gonna do that man told me I needed to receive Jesus I don't have a clue what that means but I get the idea something about giving my life to you so here's what we're gonna do Lord I'm gonna give my life to you for a month and I said I'll go where you want me to go I'll do what you want me to do I don't know how you're gonna tell me but you tell me and I'll do it and at the end of the month if you haven't given me the rest and the peace that you promised right here in this verse then I reserve the right to take my life back but you do what you said you'll do in this verse and you can have my life for good amen now you say you might say long that is without a doubt the worst salvation prayer I've ever heard in my life well you weren't there to help me I mean I'm flying by the seat of my pants here friends I don't know a Christian in the world most drug dealers don't carry Bibles you know well if you know Jesus Christ you know what happened next I'm so glad the Bible says first samuel 16:7 man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart I believe the Lord sat up in heaven and said Solomon that is the worst salvation prayer I've ever heard in my life but you mean business son and we're gonna deal with your heart and not the content of that prayer and so within a week you know God moved into my life you know hook line sinker boat anchor the whole thing and I got back on my knees a week later and said okay I mean something's happened inside of me that's never happened before and I've tried everything Eastern religions drugs the whole nine yards so I thought God a deal's a deal you got my life I don't know what you're gonna do with a hippie with hair out to his shoulders who wears bell-bottoms and tank tops and motorcycle boots and love beads and has a goatee but you got me I'm yours and folks that was 35 years ago and I'm here to tell you that the Lord has been more gracious to me and he's been more benevolent to me and he's been more merciful to me than I could ever possibly deserve now when I first came to Christ I decided to read the whole Bible through from cover to cover which I did in the first six months and one of my heroes was the Apostle Paul but you know in those early days I began thinking I'd like to be like the Apostle Paul but nobody can be like the Apostle Paul I mean I looked at these guys people like him and Joshua and Elijah and Caleb and David and Isaiah and and Daniel and I said you know these guys are like Superman I mean they're like from another planet somewhere you know normal people can't be like these people and maybe you feel the way I did I mean maybe you aspire to do something great for God but you look at these great giants of the faith and and you're 10 you tend to think wow I could never be like one of them I mean they were made of different genetic material than I'm made of the normal people are made of will friends that is simply not true it is a myth and that's what we want to talk about this morning in fact here at Dallas seminary this week I want to do a four part series entitled modern Theological myths I want to talk to you about four things that a lot of Christians believe but that are simply not true they're myths and I want to challenge you as a future Christian leader to be aware of these myths and to will make sure you avoid them in whatever ministry the Lord Jesus takes you into so here they are myth number one is that the Apostle Paul and every other great leader for God was made of different protoplasm than you and me number two is that Jewish people are fine just the way they are they don't need Christ myth number three is obedience is optional for servants of Christ and myth number four is that the blood of Christ is outdated and unnecessary so that's our plan for the week I hope we'll get a chance to see you during the week today we're talk about myth number one the Apostle Paul and all the other great leaders for God down through the centuries they were made of different throw to plasm than you and I are and the real question here is what was it that made the Apostle Paul the giant for Jesus Christ that he was what was it about the Apostle Paul that enabled God to use him in the incredible way that he did well let me tell you it wasn't that the Apostle Paul was made of different protoplasm than you and me it wasn't that the Apostle Paul had different genetic material than you and me what it was my friends is that the Apostle Paul lived by a different set of operating principles a different set of core values than most people live by even sadly than most followers of Christ live by and I want to share those four principles with you today and my point today is this that if the Apostle Paul were made of different protoplasm than we well then we we can't be like him but if it was a matter that the Apostle Paul had certain operating principles that he lived by and that's what made him different then friends we can copy those operating principles and we can aspire to and be used by God in ways similar to him and that's gonna be what I want to get across to us today that I want us to leave here today aspiring with God's help to live like Paul live to live according to the core values that shaped and drove his life so let me tell you what they are we've got four number one the Apostle Paul regarded himself as a servant first Corinthians chapter four verse one so then Paul writes men ought to regard us as servants of Christ now the Greek word that's used here for servant is a very picturesque word it literally means an under ower and please let me explain this word to you in the fifth century BC the Greeks came up with a new kind of naval vessel that transformed naval warfare in the Mediterranean Sea prior to this chips would pull up next to ships and they would try to board one another but the Greeks came up with a different idea a ship called a trireme will show you a picture and the idea now was not to board another ship the idea now was to ram another ship with a brass battering ram that you see at the water level in the front of this ship and the way they got enough propulsion up to actually damage another ship was they put lots and lots and lots of oarsmen on the boat well if you line all those oarsmen up in a long straight line you end up with a boat that's so long and unknowable that it's really not much good to you so they came up with an ingenious idea and that is they stacked the rowers on top of one another in three levels this is why it's called a trireme we'll show you a little diagram and you all understand this cuz you've all seen ben-hur yes we all know this all right now if you are an under or what level do you think you were on in this boat well if you say the third level down on the bottom level you are absolutely right folks this was not a good place to be on this ship let's just say if you were under an under our gravity was not your friend do you understand what I'm saying some of you guys will get down the way to lunch but but under rowers work this was an ignominious job I mean there was nothing glamorous at all about being an under or there was just a lot of sweat and a lot of hard work and a lot of suffering and yet the Apostle Paul says this is exactly how I see myself as a follower of Jesus Christ he says in first Corinthians 4 hey fellas I am NOT a Grand Poobah of anything I'm just an under ower down here in the belly of God ship rowing my guts out and the only thing I care about is that the captain of the ship the Lord Jesus Christ gets the glory now my friends I want to call on you to go out there and be under OERs for the Lord Jesus Christ I want you to call I want to on you to go out there and serve the Lord with all your heart all your soul all your mind all your strength and to consider no job too low no job too menial and no job too degrading for you to do if the Lord Jesus Christ asks you to do it for him that's what characterized the Apostle Paul you know when I first came to the Washington area I'd been a believer about six months and I I was given a job there working for the good news mission they provided chaplains for local jails and they hired me to be their custodial engineer back then we called it a janitor and so I mopped floors and I I swept up leaves and I clean toilets and then emptied the trash and that's what I did before I went to seminary and I remember one day I was cleaning this toilet and I and I said God something this is not right something's wrong with this you know I'm I'm I'm really aspiring to be the next Apostle Paul and the next Apostle Paul should not be cleaning toilets this is something wrong with this picture God and I was mumbling and grumbling right earlier you know how that is just complaining up a storm and I really sense the Holy Spirit said to me as clear as a bell you know what long if I can't trust you to clean toilets and sweep floors as unto me then you know what I can't trust you to do anything bigger if you don't understand why it's important that you learn to clean floors and clean toilets as under me before I give you anything else to do if that's too good if you're too good to do something like that then you will never understand what made the Apostle Paul the Apostle Paul and you will never be like him whoa friends you know I live in a town Washington DC full of big shots and I always have people say to me oh if we could just lead Madonna to Christ if we could just lead Donald Trump to Christ if we could lead Edward Kennedy to Christ if we could lead the Supreme Court just sister Christ just think what an impact they would make on our world not true not true and I'll tell you why folks these people are not the secret to the moving of the gospel in the world because they don't know how to be servant so many of these people they have been served their whole life so much that even when they come to Christ if they do they don't know how to serve other people this is why marriages in Hollywood don't survive I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said honk if you've been married to Liz Taylor and the point is the plan the point is these marriages don't work because to make a marriage work you've got to be able to serve somebody and these people don't know how to do it listen the work of God always has and the work of God always will move forward on the backs of under rowers and if you and I want God to use us the way he used the Apostle Paul then you and I are gonna have to be willing to live by the very same core value that the Apostle Paul lived by he was an under our number two principle number two is that the Apostle Paul had a passion for evangelism a passion for winning people to Christ listen to what he said first second Corinthians 5:19 he said we are ambassadors for Christ 1st Corinthians 9 22 I have become all things to all people so by all means I might win some Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation for all who believe to the Jew first and also to the Gentile and finally 2nd Timothy chapter 2 verse 9 because of the message of Jesus Christ Paul says I am imprisoned like a criminal but I am willing to endure such treatment so that people can obtain the salvation which is in Jesus Christ here is a man who was passionate about winning people to Christ and let me tell you why the Apostle Paul was so passionate friends simply it was because he believed the Bible he believed that when Jesus said John 14:6 I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the Father but by me the Apostle Paul believed that he knew that without faith in Jesus Christ every single person he met was headed for disaster in eternity a place called hell and he also knew that people's only hope their only way out of this dilemma is faith in Jesus Christ this is what the Word of God says and therefore this is what the Apostle Paul believed and my Christian friends God wants every one of us to have this very same passion for evangelism that Paul had but we will never get this passion until we are willing to believe the Bible the way the Apostle Paul believed it until we are willing to believe what the Bible says about the lost estate of mankind about the reality of Hell and willing to believe that Jesus Christ death on the cross is the one and only payment for sin that Almighty God will accept it's the exclusive way for people to get heaven and eternal life and frankly I'm appalled and how many people claim to be followers of Jesus Christ today and do not believe this the slippage on this has been scary in the evangelical world today and folks if we wanna seeee we will waffle when it comes to having a passion for reaching people for Christ well I'm here to tell you the Apostle Paul did not wanna seeee not even one tiny little bit if he had gone on Larry King and Larry King had asked him a person who doesn't believe in Christ do they go to heaven or hell Paul would have answered him straight up and he'd have gotten the answer right he would have said they'd go to hell and Paul would have said that without apology and that explains why he had the passion for evangelism that he had and folks if we want to have that same passion we must believe that every single person we meet every single person we pass our neighbors our relatives our friends at school our co-workers the cashier at the grocery store the repairman that comes to the door the delivery person with FedEx every one of these people apart from Christ are headed for a disaster in eternity and I hope you believe that and I hope you'll go out and teach that without equivalent whether people agree with you or not because that is what the Bible says and that is what the Apostle Paul believed and that is why he lived the way he did principle number three Paul was a man of absolute surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ listen to what he said Acts chapter 20 verse 21 24 rather he said I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself my only concern is that I finished the race and complete the task that the Lord Jesus has given me now what exactly is the Apostle Paul saying here well friends he's saying I have made an absolute surrender of my life to God and to God's will and he calls on every single follower of Christ here today to do the very same thing Romans chapter 12 verse 1 now I urge you brothers in light of God's mercy to you to present yourselves as living sacrifices to God which is your reasonable service folks as followers of Christ and asking us to become living sacrifices how much of us is God asking for well the answer is he's asking for all of us God wants us to bring our whole self all our heart all our mind all our soul all our strength and lay it all on the altar the whole shooting match he wants us to bring to the altar lock stock and barrel the whole nine yards hook line and sinker the whole enchilada two all-beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame-seed bun' boom bring it all and put it on the altar see folks surrendering the gods and all-or-nothing deal if you're not going to do it all don't bother do any of it it's all or nothing I the definition of absolute surrender the Jimmy Draper the former president the Southern Baptist Convention gave he said absolutely absolute surrender means that we say to God Lord the answer is yes now what was the question Lord will I be a missionary in Africa yes well I teach Sunday school lead a small group give sacrificially yes well Aki while I keep my dating life sexually clean yes will I keep my thought life where it belongs will i guard what comes out of my mouth well I forgive people who have hurt me yes yes yes Lord the answer is yes now what was the question Lord this is what Almighty God is looking for from you from me from every follower of Christ who wants his or her life to count friends if we want God to bless our lives like he blessed the Apostle Paul's life if we want God to use our lives like he used the Apostle Paul's life if we want God to reward our lives the way he rewarded the life of the Apostle Paul then we must satisfy this condition that Paul lived by absolute surrender when God sent him to jail he said fine when God shipwrecked him he said fine when God had him beaten and thrown into the Phillipi prison he said fine Lord the answer is yes what's the question principle number four the Apostle Paul was more concerned about pleasing God than he was pleasing men listen to what he said Galatians 1:10 he said am I trying to win the approval of men or God or am I trying to please men if I were still trying to please men like back when I was a rabbi Paul said I could not ah there's the key words I could not be a servant of Christ and my friends this is exactly as a sir how you and I have to live as servants of Christ if we want to see our lives ever count for Jesus Christ if our highest goal is to win the approval of men if our highest goal is wended to win the applause of men this will cause us to disobey God at crucial points in our life this will cause us to compromise the Gospel message at dif points in our life Jesus said it nobody can please both God and man which is why the Apostle Paul said in this verse tried to do this and you cannot be a servant of Christ now listen to me Galatians chapter 5 verse 11 says something that a lot of the modern Christian world doesn't believe it says that in the preaching of the Cross there is an offense to the cross the Bible makes it clear that if we preach Christ the way we're supposed to preach Christ if we preach the cross the way we're supposed to preach the cross we are going to offend a people and that's just the way it is and friends if we try to take the offense out of the message of the Cross we end up without the message of the Cross now a lot of people in the Christian world are trying to do this today they're trying to be so politically correct and so friendly and dialogue so much I hate that word so much that they're taking the offense out of the cross now this does not mean that we try to be offensive in the way we present the cross understand me but there is an offense when you tell a sinner that they're a sinner there's an offense when you tell a sinner that they can't work their way to heaven there is an offense when you tell an American that they need Jesus Christ or they're going to hell there is an offense that you and I do not have the right to take out of the cross that is above our pay grade my friends so don't do it if you're gonna go out and preach don't waste your time unless you're gonna go out and preach the cross the way it is and when you do you're gonna make some people upset I have people every week who get up out of our services and walk out you say they don't like the music no they walk out during the message some message they don't walk out during the music they walk out right in the middle of me preaching you say why maybe they had to use a restroom no not the way they walked out no no they don't like what I'm saying they don't like what I'm preaching they don't want to hear it and I pray for them as they walk out and say Lord Jesus help them but you know what I don't stop what I'm preaching because truth is truth and I realize there is an offense to the cross if you do it right that we and we cannot avoid Paul understood that and that's why the Apostle Paul said I'm not trying to please men I'm trying to please God and if you're ever a pastor uh-huh if you're ever a Christian leader you're gonna get the chance to live this principle in spades trust me you know I'm on the board of Jews for Jesus I'm proud to say that I've been on the board serve along with my good friend Harold here I've been on since 1987 it's my contribution back to Jewish evangelism and when when Jews for Jesus came to Washington DC to do a campaign the year before last I went out with them on the streets of Washington DC we wore big yellow t-shirts that said Jews for Jesus and we went on the streets handing out tracts now you go out on the street of Washington DC with a shirt like that on its like going out with a big bullseye painted right in the middle of your chest if you understand what I'm saying and so I was right down by one of the metro stations in DC and I was handing out tracts and people were balling him up and throwing him on the ground and bumping into me and cussing me out and threatening to assault me on the street and after I'd been there for a while maybe a half-hour this guy was right in front of a Starbucks and this guy comes out of Starbucks young guy and he says to me he says ACK I asked you a question I said sure he said yeah I've been sitting in Starbucks here for about 15 minutes having a cup of coffee watching you and he said I don't understand how you take the kind of abuse that you're out here taking on the street he said are you in sales I'm serious haha and I said no I'm not he said so how do you put up with all of this mistreatment and this rejection I said well sir it's real simple the answer is I'm not out here trying to win a popularity contest frankly I don't really CAIR with these people walking by on the street think of me I'm out here serving Jesus Christ I said to him and I said as long as he's pleased with me at the end of the day that's all I really care about and he said well he said now there's a different way to look at life and I said so tell me I said do you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and he said I don't think so I gave him a tract and I said I tell you what if you're interested you call me up and after you give your life to Christ I'll bring you out here on the street with me and we'll do this together well he never called but but you never know he might the point is friends 2nd Corinthians 5:10 when we arrive in heaven the Bible says we must all appear before the judgment seat of who what's the next word what's the next word Christ that's right and give an account of the things we did while we were in these bodies notice it doesn't say that we're gonna stand at the judgment seat of your mama we're not gonna stand at the judgment seat of your daddy we're not standing at the judgment seat of your brother your sister your neighbor your coworker your relative or your friend our accounting will be to the living Lord Jesus personally and what that means is we better worry about pleasing him when we're here and if people don't like it you know what ok they don't like it I'm not serving them I'm serving the Living Christ that's how Paul saw the world so let's summarize shall we 4 characteristics that made the Apostle Paul the incredible man of God that he was number one he had a humble servant spirit he was an under ower that's how he saw himself number two he had a passion for evangelism his theme song was be a missionary every day you know the song right that was his theme song number three he had an absolute surrender to Jesus Christ in his life Lord the answer is yes now what's the question and finally he was out with his life to please God and not people and listen to what Paul said he said 1st Corinthians 11:1 imitate me just as I seek to imitate Jesus Christ think now the Lord Jesus demonstrated all four of these very same principles in his life when he was here on earth and Paul said all I'm doing is trying to imitate him and what I challenge you to do is imitate me now in closing let me say to you that as a Dallas seminary student it is not good enough for you to leave Dallas seminary and become a deacon or an elder in a church somewhere it is not good enough for you to leave Dallas Senate seminary and become a choir member or Sunday school teacher or small group leader somewhere it is not good enough for you to leave Dallas seminary and become a pastor or a missionary or a successful businessman or woman it is not good enough for you to leave Dallas seminary and become a nice mother or an admiral or a General or the President of the United States that's not good enough what our world desperately needs my friends are people who are fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ people who are disciples of Jesus Christ people whose entire lives are defined by these four same principles that define the life of the Apostle Paul and I leaned over to dr. Bailey sitting up here and I said can you imagine what a privilege it is to teach all these young men and women if we could unleash these many true disciples on the world my gosh friends 12 of them turn the world upside down in their day along with a few hundred others we don't need Sunday School teachers and pastors and missionaries we need disciples of Jesus who are willing to live by the principles Paul lived by and if necessary die for the principles that Paul died for that's what we need and that's your goal is a Dallas seminary student if all the things you learn don't end up there then I'm here to respectfully tell you that the learning didn't help you this is where we need you to be when you walk out of this place and while you're at this place and so I want to challenge every one of us here who name the name of Christ to consecrate ourselves to being such people now friends I know that you can't get to be this kind of person without God's help I understand that but friends for God to help us we've got to aspire to be these kind of people we've got to want to be these kind of people we've got to crave being these kind of people and that's my challenge to you that you're willing to consecrate yourself to being these kind of people regardless of the cost and look here look here I'm here to tell you you go out and live like this it's gonna cost you it costs the Apostle Paul and it's gonna cost you but here's the deal if you and I love Jesus Christ enough we won't care about paying the cost we'll be happy to pay it and so in just a moment I want to pray for those of you who are really willing to live this way and in just a moment I'm gonna ask you to stand if you are now let me just say before we do this please don't stand because you're worried about what your friends will think of you that doesn't matter and please don't stand because you're worried what your professors up on the stage might think about you cuz that doesn't matter for any of you stand up God's gonna take you up on this offer you better mean business don't stand don't don't don't stand up because you're worried that you might hurt my feelings if you don't stay and listen I've been a pastor 26 years believe me you will not hurt my feelings you won't I'd rather have 10 of you stand who really mean business then 50 of you stand who really don't because you feel obligated to and so if you mean business and you're willing to say Lord Jesus if you'll help me this is the way I'm gonna live if I die living this way I don't care what the cost is this is how I'm gonna live Lord like the Apostle Paul lived then I want you to stand up and let me pray for you right now god bless you let's pray Lord Jesus I am I don't know what to say a little overwhelmed to think what would happen if every person standing here went out and lived this way even if it cost them their lives Lord Jesus this is what our world needs this is what our nation needs we don't need people playing churchianity we don't need people going out there and be in dialogues for christ we need to sciples God we need men and women like the Apostle Paul who live the way he lived and are willing to die the way he died for Christ and so Lord Jesus I want to pray for these young men and women standing up I think of myself 35 years ago and lord I pray that you would honor their commitment today that you would mold them into these kinds of Christian leaders for the glory of the gospel and the glory of Christ and Lord Jesus that we would look back on this day as the Lord tarries 10 20 30 years from now and that we'd be able to say that this day standing we commissioned a whole new army a whole new division to invade this world for Jesus Christ right here at Dallas seminary or that's why this seminary exists for this very moment and for this very purpose thank you for these young men and women who are standing lord use their lives in ways that standing here today they can't even imagine for the glory of Jesus and for no one else's glory and we pray this in Jesus name Amen you
