hey good morning all uh welcome to what my wife lovingly refers to as the man cave um i had been asked by friends and family to kind of post the modifications that i did on my lifetime tamarack 100 angler kayak um i love the thing you know inexpensive great you know as everybody says it's like a great starter kayak but i'll tell you what this thing is fantastic i love it um there are some modifications i did um just because design-wise or a few things but we'll get through it this is my walk-through i just want to show you guys what i did the ideas that i had with certain things too and why i did what i did as far as purchasing and and doing things um the first thing most importantly um my flotation vest is a fishing style vest the reason i did that is so that i could keep like my pliers my knife uh my scale you know fish grips all that stuff keep it handy and this works great um to quote richard attenborough and jurassic park i spared no expense um this was i think i got like 40 bucks off a wish or something like that um i also have this little thing this keeps my phone so if i want to take pictures and whatnot you know i've got it and it's it's supposed to be a dry bag i'm not going to test it out of course but you know i just keep it there and it's tethered to the vest so um but that's the vest that's what i like to use and it works great i have used it i i like it um next the paddle i will probably upgrade this is the original paddle that came with it it's a little short for me but what i did to it was um i put some grips on and these are actually uh bicycle grips that i got from walmart for like five bucks and i just split them open fit them on took some um electrical tape and wrapped around it to keep them secure and then i took the end of it and used it as a drip ring um not a bad idea inexpensive way if you don't want to spend a lot of money to to do paddle grips you can do it that way i mean it works next we'll get to the hatch the hatch does have the velcro on it and the reason for that is i've seen a lot of people and i mean there's a lot of good resources on youtube as far as how to upgrade kayaks and things um a lot of them like to use the trays and just put stuff in the tray and i thought well you know stuff gets loose and things like that and i don't want to have to be dealing with it so what i did was i got these small tackle trays i got these at walmart i think they were like maybe five six bucks a piece i think if not less but i bought these and they i velcro them like this so they'll fit right on top and what i did was each one i have three of them and each one i put velcro on the top and the bottom so they're all stick together and that to me i can put lures you know depending on where i'm fishing the conditions whatever i can put whatever lures they need you know terminal tackle that sort of stuff in here and just have it handy um i also have a crate which we'll get to but um this is just if you want to have stuff that's you know your go-to lures that are close at hand to me it's a good idea um i don't know you know it may work differently for somebody else but let's get to the hatch um now if you all know these these lifetime uh kayaks they they're open all the way through so i've seen a lot of people do this where they take uh get a piece of velcro and get some kind of a container or a bucket and put in here so it was a great idea again youtube a lot of resources for upgrading kayaks and getting ideas um you know definitely look into it if you're planning on doing anything this is just a food container that i got at a local discount store um what will also work is a um if you have like the the large coffee cans like a folger's can or a maxwell house kit any one of those plastic containers will fit in there so if you don't want to spend a lot of money you know you can just use reuse a container save the environment right but that takes care of the hatch now the next thing i did was the seat which you can see the pad underneath um that is very uncomfortable about three hours on the water and your butt starts hurting um so i went to walmart i got this is their stadium seat i think was like 15 bucks um now it had clips to um hold the hold it to like a bench i took those clips out and what i did was i bought off of amazon again um i bought these uh it was a kit that was a roll of bungee cord um and you can get the hooks and the um the hog rings and the pliers and stuff and well worth the investment if you want to just kind of make your own bungee cords to custom fit things um i did that just to keep it from when i'm traveling when i'm transporting it in my car i uh i put this you know i actually put it so that the the stern is facing the front of my car so this when the wind blows it's not gonna catch catch that and blow it up um but that's what i did there um next uh the back hatch i don't use um i did put now the problem is with the skeg in the back and let's see if i can open this um you'll have that that is just a little trash can that i got at dollar tree that fits inside and it fits in between the skeg because i tried using one of those round containers and for some reason just the way the shape was with the skeg and everything it did not fit so but i really don't use this um now that i've got my crate which we'll get to next um i don't use this but the thing of it is is it it leaves a bit of a bubble so that's why on the crate i put and this is just some wood blocks i gorilla glued them to it and i also put these little felt chair pads on just to protect the plastic from you know the wood i don't know if it would mart or anything like that or scratch it up but i figured just safe than sorry but what i did this is um i got this from milkcratedirect.com these crates uh they were about eight bucks a piece i bought two of them so the one became the lid and the other one is the actual um crate itself and this these hold my tackle trays i have um inside uh my my tackle bag came from walmart and it uses this size tray which i think is like a 10 by 14 kind of a tray so i use that um and it works they fit well in there and i can fit the whole i can actually pretty much fit my whole tackle bag in here um what i also did is i put this is a serial container and i just velcroed it to the side and that has uh that's for loose stuff to have to be for like sunscreen bug spray you know whatever else that's gonna be kind of loose that i can just fit in there and if i need to i can just grab it um now what i did to the crate um was i bought again i bought these pad eyes i think i got them off of ebay or amazon i don't recall which um i use the bungee cord to keep it you know they keep it secure if i put it here and then i got one on the other side and the same within the back i can just bungee cord it to to the pad eye here and that it does hold it down very well that this thing does not move um this you'll laugh at this this is my anchor um it is a two pound coated dumbbell um it works great i have used it i have not used it with the um the clothesline you know i painted that but i got that at home depot and um you know this way i can use it i have my my anchor trolley um there's a piece of pvc pipe right here that that stores the the the i mean i've seen people do the whole thing with um the anchors where they do the whole thing with the zip tie and the cable and all that and i'm just thinking to myself you know it's it's a lot of work i can understand if you're doing an ocean fishing or whatever maybe that works for you but um for this you know for me fishing the ponds and stuff this is great if i get hung up on a stump or something i can just cut it loose i think it was three or four bucks at walmart you know i can go buy another one you know it's no big deal um so that's you know that's the the idea the crate i got i put bungee cord up top here to um keep stuff in if i want to put a tackle tray it's not going to fall out um my net this is a friend of mine gave me this this is actually a water bottle holder that you put out like on your belt loop and i thought well this will work great for my net um so i can just you know just take and unclip it and that that stays on to the net part and i can i can bring my fish in um but also um i made i got some paracord and made up a ton of little you know uh little lanyards and stuff to keep everything secure um but that i keep on this side and uh i just keep it handy so i can just reach behind grab it um because normally i'll put my rod in the scotty mount holder you know lock it in so it doesn't go anywhere and then work with trying to get the fish uh in um now that being said let me get to the other side of the uh kayak and sorry you were looking at the floor there but um i did put um these rod holders on and there is a reasoning for what i do um anybody who knows me knows that i have to use a cane to carry stuff or to you know pull things and that so um the first one is for my cane which there is i took a piece of pipe insulation same with the um net i took a piece of pipe insulation and just wrapped it around and i velcroed it um that way if it ever goes in the drink but i also made um walmart has a paracord for you know i think it's like six bucks for a 50-yard length of it um so i made i put these little made these little loops and i got these little lanyards that i made to secure everything um the fishing rod um i did what i used is the these um nylon carabiners um i prefer those to the metal ones as far as holding my my fishing rods that way the metal doesn't damage anything so you know that'll fit in and you know i can just take the other end the other end i use metal ones i didn't care um they're small enough but you know i can hook them in and and be able to just you know unhook it if you know when i need to if i gotta switch rods out or whatever i can do that um so that's basically it there um i did install an anchor trolley and we'll have to go back around for that um but you know i did install the anchor trolley and i've got to get a nylon carabiner for this because i don't want to have uh metal i'm you know i'm just leery about metal on plastic so that but that seems to be working great i can't wait to try it out um as the kayak takes a rock there as i got it on the um got it on the saw horses but that's you know i installed that yesterday and it seems to be working pretty good like i said i can't wait to try it out and see how it does on the water with the uh my my homemade anchor there um the other thing i did um i i did install the pad eyes along the the deck here um the reason being is there's my my way of transporting once i get to where i'm going um i pull that that card out open it up put the kayak on top and then i put all my gear you know the the crate and stuff and that was the other reason for doing the crate is i don't want to carry a lot of stuff and the quicker i get on the water the better so hence the uh the crate because i can just pick everything up put it in take my rods put them on boom down to the lake i go or the pond wherever i'm gonna fish um but i also did this for my uh the little trolley or cart whatever you want to call that that thing i have that and then i've got a couple of um a couple of again a couple of bungee cords that i've made that will hook in there and i can just kind of thread it underneath and hook it in to the other side of it and it just crisscrosses um i kept the original crisscross pattern uh bungee cord that they had that came with it um case you know i ever decide to go somewhere and i need to use it i mean that's great for if you're doing camping and you got you're gonna have a bag or something but um you know i just i can't wait now you know now that i've got everything done with it that i need to uh i just can't wait to get it back out on the water and get fishing again it's just this year now in massachusetts a little cold um i do not do well in the cold so you know i i'll just be watching it on tv basically i guess but that's my upgrades i hope you liked it and thanks for watching
