[Music] so after upgrading to the newer animal crossing edition nintendo switch i decided to make some upgrades to my old launch nintendo switch this isn't the animal crossing one this is just a dbrand skin i make a lot of videos on this channel on little portable emulation devices and i make a lot of videos on the nintendo switch so you put the two together and boom i put android on my switch and now it should be able to play just about anything right i put a good chunk of my retro library on here just like i would any other portable emulation device since it's an android tablet it can run retroarch and it could theoretically run some streaming services so the possibilities are limitless [Music] right this video is sponsored by expressvpn everybody's heard horror stories about the dangers of public wi-fi so whenever i'm out at a coffee shop or something i just flick on expressvpn to give myself a peace of mind of course that hasn't happened in a long long time so now i use expressvpn for what i think is arguably its most important feature location spoofing let's say you want to watch a show that's only available on the uk netflix just pretend like you're in the uk or let's just say gee i don't know your mom wants to watch an australian drama show that she got hooked on by watching re-uploads on youtube and now wants to watch the new season legitly hi did you find out how to get that show for me oh you bet i did using expressvpn vpn yes find out how you can get three months free by clicking the link in the description below or going to expressvpn.com wolfden spelt like that mom and that's expressvpn for helping support the channel this is not real coffee i haven't touched android since like 2016. i used to root all my phones so this world isn't exactly new to me the process of actually putting android on this thing was surprisingly straightforward it took me about three hours to get the switch to a usable state i wouldn't say it's a hard hack to do it just took a lot of redoing steps over and over again or turning the switch on and off over and over again until it finally took oh yeah baby oh baby this isn't a tutorial i'm not the guy for that i'm just telling you about how my experience was and what it's like after the fact if you want a tutorial you should follow the one that i followed along with by never chalt what you'll need is one of these little tiny doohickeys it's called an rcm jig there are two pins inside of the right joy-con slot that need to be connected in order to create a short you can do this with just a paper clip but if you mess up at all you risk permanently damaging your switch also this thing was only seven dollars on amazon i also purchased a payload injector but this didn't even work for me this device is supposed to force the bootloader into your switch but i couldn't get it to work at all so i just used tegra rcm which is something that never talks about in this video so basically instead of using one of these devices you can just use a windows computer and that's what i did and it was it worked perfectly fine after a bunch of trying and retrying and turning the thing on and off again until it finally took unfortunately nintendo has caught on to this hack so in order to even be able to perform this hack you need an older model nintendo switch there are tools available online where you can type in the serial number and it'll tell you whether or not your switch is patchable mine is a launch nintendo switch so i know that it's patchable i'd also recommend not performing this hack on your main switch any wrong move and you could potentially brick your switch since android is running alongside the switch's own os they say that nintendo can't detect the hack via a firmware update or something and force your switch to shut down but i'm not taking any chances here on my main switch i don't give a about this thing now this thing plays games surprisingly well it's surprising because the whole operating system is slow as molasses buggy and completely unoptimized getting android installed was nothing compared to how much of an absolute pain in the ass it was to get the games running on here but once they're on here they run pretty damn good all i really did was download retroarch and all the necessary cores super nintendo runs great although i couldn't get the thumbstick to work which is fine it felt a little floaty at first but either i got used to it or getting rid of the ui or reduced the input lag game boy advance looks gorgeous on this 720p screen and runs fantastic i don't know why i'm always so impressed by the sprite work on game boy advanced games but every time i run one of these emulators i'm like wow it's so beautiful i should stop being surprised by that and every core has a fast forward button which is awesome but that stuff's easy to emulate this isn't the best n64 emulator but it works great for what it is there are some hiccups that you can hear in the audio but for what it's worth this is a fine usable emulator hey look at that i'm playing n64 on my switch before they even put it on there wow i'm so blessed my biggest problem is that the analog stick isn't registered as an analog stick on the system level so every direction you push the analog stick in is registered as a full send this is particularly crummy in a game like mario 64 that requires precision playstation runs great as well i never realized that crash bandicoot doesn't have dual shock support so i learned something i could not get gamecube to work i tried it in retroarch using the dolphin core and that should have been fine i tried downloading the dolphin emulator itself and that gave me errors nintendo ds also did not work at all and i have seen people running gamecube and nintendo ds emulators on their hacked switch so it is possible to run android on here and get those things to work i just cannot be bothered right now dreamcast runs awesome i was very surprised by how well that ran considering n64 was just okay and gamecube and ds don't run that great so let's just say this thing caps at dreamcast unless you want to do a lot more tinkering than i did i'm sure there are ways to optimize each core so you can get the best performance out of each system on here but it already took so long to set this thing up and i'm a little bit spoiled by all these little portable emulation devices that you could just pick up and play right out of the box with great performance so playing games isn't really the problem here that runs great the ones that do the problem is that the whole operating system is just so infuriatingly slow it takes forever to do a simple task like download chrome which took seven minutes for me even just navigating menus is irritating processes crash very frequently or take so long to load the unit thinks they're crashing even when i was shooting b-roll for this video the bluetooth just turned itself off and refused to turn on no matter what i did so the only thing i could do is reboot the system which also takes a really long time and all of these little quirks together is what took me so long to get all the damn games running on here i tried just taking the micro sd card out and putting it in my computer and dragging and dropping all my roms which took six hours by the way even though that micro sd card was once the fastest micro sd card on the market but when i plugged it back into my switch guess what none of the games were in that folder at all they just miraculously disappeared so what i did was i got a file explorer i put my dropbox on here and i just downloaded all of my roms one system at a time there's a lot more little quirks on here too like for example the joy-con aren't technically attached they're charging on the unit but no data is being sent by the hard connection everything has to work via bluetooth which means you have to connect your joy-con every single time you boot this thing into android which leads me to potentially the biggest problem for practicality in order to even boot this thing into android you have to connect the jig boot into safe mode run the bootloader from an external source select to boot android remove the jig and connect the joy cons via bluetooth every single time you would like to use it and since my payload injector didn't work for this means in order to boot into android i have to have the switch connected to the windows partition on my computer it's not exactly practical if you want to leave this thing in android your best bet is to leave it in a dock or charging and just leave it in sleep mode don't ever turn it off if you turn it off you're gonna have to go through that whole rigmarole however i left it in sleep mode and then when i went to go turn it on today shoots a b-roll the bluetooth stopped working so don't get me wrong this whole project is a miracle the fact that a small group of people were able to get android running on a switch is amazing if you just want to emulate your retro games this thing is not going to replace your dedicated portable emulation device or even your hacked ds or your psp so really this is just a fun little project if you want to see what your switch is capable of but really i'm kind of leaving the best part for last steam link was the easiest thing for me to set up on here it connected to my pc instantly the first game i tried was fall guys obviously the controls worked perfectly right out of the box i didn't have to set up anything i didn't even feel any latency at all it was as if fall guys was running on my switch this is probably the most practical use of having android on switch this is what opens up a world of possibilities you can play basically your entire steam library right off of your switch and it looks and runs beautifully i didn't know what else to try so i tried cs go and that was a terrible experience that game is not optimized for controller input and the thumb sticks still don't register analog inputs anyway but for whatever reason it didn't really bother me in fall guys now i don't currently have the x-clap preview but once that actually comes out i'll definitely be trying that on this thing that will open up the switch to a whole world of xbox games i have little faith that xcloud will run as good as steam link did on here but it gives me a lot of hope for streaming services on the switch whether nintendo wants them there or not android on the switch also just straight up supports docking since the joy-con are connected via bluetooth anyway disconnecting them and putting them in a joy-con grip is no problem the screen stays on in the dock which is kind of an unfortunate waste of system resources but it is what it is i was surprised i could even get sound coming out of the tv normally a switch will run at a higher processing power when docked but this build of android allows you to pick your processor performance from the battery menu you're going to want that ramped all the way up most of the time anyway just because the whole damn system is so sluggish as it is playing it in doc's mode it feels like there might be a weird amount of lag but it's hard to tell if that's input lag from the joy joy-con or input lag from the dock to the screen so let's just put the two side-by-side and see so it's actually pretty instant it's like a frame or a frame and a half slower going from the switch to the tv but the lag between the joy-con and the switch is pretty long so i thought this would be interesting i have a chromecast and this is an android tablet so i should be able to just okay and it's black now i crashed the settings app that was a little too much to ask the sound is coming out of the tv oh oh hold up okay [Music] all right it just miraculously started working oh it's not good it's like almost good if this was a more stable build of android i think that this would work really well so all in all this will not be the most practical for your retro gaming i was kind of hoping for a little bit of a cleaner experience i have seen a hack that just puts retroarch on your switch's main os which removes the need for android entirely but that's also just asking for the nintendo gestapo to come knocking at your door it's a fun little project to mess around with and if you have a switch to burn but if you're looking for a dedicated emulation machine i would still say get something like the rg 350m or maybe one of the new emulation devices i have yet to try out they just came out with the retroid pocket 2 yeah and that's on its way and i'm excited to try that out steam link was by far the coolest use of this android hack so maybe if you just want to play fall guys on your couch then this might be practical for you it's certainly a promising project switch route has been in development for a while and unfortunately it seems like the updates have kind of died down but if they can get a stable build going and maybe something that doesn't require a payload injector then i could see android being much more popular on many more people's switches it would give you plenty of reason to get a second switch great that's exactly the theme of this but as of right now you're best off saving your roms for emulation devices or better yet just getting whatever is available on the switch i'm sure you can hold out a little bit longer for that mario 3d collection you're blocking my shot you're blocking the shot okay thank you what do you guys think about android running on the switch or any other hacks you think i should try on this thing hopefully not something that's too difficult the whole idea of this channel is just showing you what my experience is with certain you know like products or games or in this case hacks and my experience was you saw it i'll just stick to all the other emulation devices that i have thank you very much anyway leave in the comments below add me on twitter any and all this other social media garbage and thank you expressvpn for helping support the channel and for getting my mom to watch your australian show anyway we got new videos on here weekly now or sometimes more than weekly and we got streams over on twitch.tv slash wolfe then i'm probably there tonight playing fall guys oh and on thursday there's going to be a whole it's going to be a mess we're doing we're playing among us a whole bunch of us it's gonna be it's gonna be but anyway the most important thing that you can do and the easiest thing to help support us is just subscribe make sure that you're subscribed because you might think that you are and you're not click that bell if you want notifications it's just me here on the channel now so you only get this show you're only getting notifications for this show but you can also just share this video with a friend a friend who's maybe interested in tinkering with stuff like this maybe they're just interested in retro stuff and they have a nintendo switch maybe they just really love android maybe they're one of those weirdos thank you very much have yourself a good week
