hi there and welcome to the studio my name's andrew and it is an absolute pleasure to have your company here once again now i've got a bit of a different video to share with you this week this is going to be a bit of a critique session of one of my designs from a few years ago a reimagining of that design and then eventually blocking that in and i want to share an overview with you of that process of where i take a painting from where it is in that initial concept and idea and push it into something that's just so much better than what i originally thought i could achieve but i didn't do this alone i actually had some help from my patrons over on patreon now every week i'm sharing exclusive video content with my patrons on patreon it's only five bucks a month and i'm sharing in-depth critique videos there's some live streams on there and there's also some special painting videos that you're not gonna see anywhere else so i'm gonna put a link to it in the description down below and i really appreciate you checking that out now here's my design from a few years ago this is an icy river it's an imaginary scene but it's based on the new zealand mountainous landscape that you can find here in the south island now something has been niggling at me over the years and i couldn't quite tell how to take this design from where it was to what it could be i knew i could push it a bit further but i was thinking look maybe i'll fix it on the painting and maybe the the ideas and the answers to these questions might present themselves when i'm actually physically painting it but i'm really glad i didn't do that and i'm glad i had that opportunity for my patrons to critique me now over on patreon we have a great time but yeah we also drilled deep down into the painting process and there's a bit of an inside joke that started with some of these critique videos you see if you got your painting critiqued by me it suddenly became called getting tished all right look i don't i didn't start that but it stuck now and hey look we're just gonna roll with it so here's something a little bit different a bit of fun roll that intro in sleepy town in a quiet studio one man toiled night and day on his paintings he pushed radical compositional theories on unsuspecting people week after week the drivel kept flowing the good people have had enough they just can't take anymore it's time for payback the tish gets touched [Music] now when we're taking a look at our design it's difficult to actually see it objectively because we're in the way our thought process and everything that we're bringing to it we just can't step outside ourselves and see this thing with fresh eyes and sometimes time can give us that space in order to see something clearly but also just asking people that you know and you trust and they can maybe give you an objective truthful answer about what's not working for them now in this process of critiquing i'd like to have those three questions now those three questions are what's working what's not working and what if i always like to start off positive and work out what's working with the painting or the composition and then we dig down into some of those things that are niggling at us and what's not working identify those problems and then the what-if is where we solve it and then take our painting to a new level with imagining some really creative solutions so i submitted this to my patrons over on patreon and i said hey tish me give me a critique let me know what you think about this and the ideas kept flooding in and it was awesome so let's jump over to that desk and let me share with you some of those comments now okay i'm gonna level with you here for a second this was actually a massive trap and only two of you didn't step in it louise what if you painted it exactly as it is because it's perfect thank you i'm gonna get out of here ashwin tishler himself can never be tished i love it no one tishes the tish the jokes aside there was some great constructive criticism that came about as a result of posting this and i was blown away with the response a lot of people are looking at it in that same framework of what's working what's not working and what if to push the idea so much further so denise here has said i like it what's working nice composition what's not working i feel the trees on either side are very similar and there needs to be something different okay almost a bob ross feeling i'm gonna take that as a compliment i'm i'm gonna take it as a compliment he was come on this is bob ross he's awesome what if there are a couple of wild animals in the same what if you saw a jumping fish out of the water what if show us the magic andrew all right let's not get ahead of ourselves here denise but uh i'll give it a i'll give it a shot i'll give it a shot the thing is i want to keep this as a typical new zealand landscape so i'm not making excuses here but i want this to be typical south island and new zealand now you can go hiking in the forest here in new zealand and nothing will happen to you the only thing that can kill you in new zealand is the cold all right but in the us or in canada or in other places in the world you go walking in a place like this you're carrying your bear spray am i right so i like the idea of adding some life to it maybe birds but again i'd have to be careful with the species of birds because i want it to be typical new zealand but i love where you're going with this so yes food for thought so we have a comment here from mark who said i agree with what denise said about the trees too similar in color tone and space there needs to be strong sunlight coming down on the left rocks and falls maybe a deer coming out of the forest again dear they are here they're everywhere in new zealand but introduced i kind of wanted to be typical if if i was going to make it really typical i'll tell you what i could add i'll tell you a bird i could add is a moa now look that one up no joke they're not alive anymore but wouldn't it be cool right what if a little more separation between the front cliffs and back mountains i like that idea of maybe separating opening up the depth a bit more okay i love your thinking here mark fantastic now again some people were a bit worried about that water going off the bottom right hand corner look don't take it from me all right i'm just gonna say if thomas moran did it it's okay if bierstadt did it it's okay who am i to argue with those giants of the painting world right so i'm thinking if they did it i'm gonna do it can i can i do it too all right thank you very much i got a comment here from lori so she's thinking like i'm thinking all right my immediate thought was albert bierstadt thomas moran sure the painting has several parts but i could spend a lot of time looking at them thank you beer starts works put multiple elements in one epic piece exactly here check out this painting in particular how much is going on in this like you're looking at the trees the mountains the cloud their deer drinking in the foreground how about this one i mean look how much is going on in this painting albert bierstadt was an absolute master i i often i kind of liken it to music in a way if painting was music albert bierstadt would be a symphony orchestra there's so many different little instruments all playing at once in this scene i had a comment here from andrew manzo i think opening the sky some more and bringing more light onto the mountain and giving it more depth and definition maybe you could lift the small waterfall in the center of the image and make it larger more menacing and perhaps focus of the painting you know that's um that's a really good idea that's a really good idea so rowan had a go at tisching this and i can see what you've done here you've kind of gotten rid of some of the rocks you've shifted some of the stuff in the foreground and opened up the space overall it's interesting all right we've got a comment here from rice this is awesome the only thing that really bothers me is a last waterfall leading the eye off from the picture maybe darken and soften it i could also remove those lovely vibrant colors from it now alexander has added a comment here saying what if a nasty mr bear went fishing on a sunday rainy morning and then he's drawn his own design here and uh i like it i like it it's a rainy day that's cool so lots of atmosphere in there and a bear of course catching a nice salmon just there's just one slight problem there there are no bears in new zealand all right i'm not gonna put a bear in it okay that and that's it i'm not one more to me the foreground waterfall and trees take up the same amount of canvas real estate as the mountains half and half who is the hero you got me there okay so let's let me think about that one and finally we have a comment here from jerry the mist and the majesty what's not working needs stronger vectors drawing the eye to a central focus okay now let's jump into photoshop let me take these ideas on board let's change this design and let's get tishing the tish here we go now because my ego has taken a little bit of a belting here let's start off positive and talk about what's working because it's not all bad right right i kind of feel that that's working as a concept i i like this waterfall coming down here i think that that general direction and flow we're starting to get some idea about where this raging torrent is coming from kind of cool i dig it i also wanted to lose i mean it's not necessarily about the mountains per se i wanted these to be so big and so imposing that they kind of went off the top of the painting and that these got lost in some really kind of violent weather up here at the top of the mountain i kind of like the the rocks and the and and some of the foliage here in the foreground i like some of this i think i think some of these details are working especially the greenery the moss all that sort of stuff could push it a little bit further but i kind of dig it what's not working well thinking about what peter was saying to me i think she's absolutely right that even though i mean it's not quite central where are we right about there okay these are taking up this portion is taking up pretty much equal mass with this portion the rocks down here in the left-hand corner they are awfully equal and very similar in terms of quality and also i i like that comment that that these don't appear to be embedded in the waterfall as such i think i could do something with the shape there to fix that this tree is just so dang solid and patricia in her critique of my painting she had a go at painting this as well she poked holes in here and i like that it allowed more of that background to come through this tree here this is doing something and maybe we kill this tree let's get it out of there i want it to be this is densely forested part of new zealand but this is a raging river that constantly gets washed clean so the trees don't come too close so again i'm thinking about the geology right i'm thinking about the meteorological processes that shape this landscape so it has to make sense let's keep it real with some cobalt teal let's get up in here and start talking about this i think what would be cool i like where the water's coming from i like this as a source but maybe i could be a little more deliberate in the way this is cradled up in here you know it's a glacier held in a valley now there's two scenes that i'm thinking about one from a trip i took to alaska back in 2017 i love this glacier i think that's very cool and two some areas around the mount cook region of the south island now gravity and geology does pretty similar stuff around the world even though they're each country is unique in its own way ice is going to do a particular thing to a landscape again of course depending on the rock but i like this mountain in alaska so can i apply some new zealand geological processes to that idea and i do see some indication of that in the mount cook reference so what i'm going to do is i'm going to funnel that a little bit more deliberately i love some of the mountain imagery from mount cook i'll try and create something a little more natural but maybe i could go ahead and take this v that we have here and maybe push it up into that area up there too and maybe break it up with some more patches of snow i don't know i don't know i might abandon this idea but it could be cool it could be really cool what if we had a waterfall coming down into the scene here too much maybe too much maybe okay split split the difference five meters five meters yeah i think that could work okay we'll lift it up five meters i think i want to have it coming out there okay i know you cannot make any sense of this right now but that's okay i can fallen trees fallen logs something in here to just talk about a little bit more about that life cycle in the forest so some new young trees and then some old established trees and then one that's finally been washing down the river i think that'll work what do you think all right let's get started [Music] well i got home last night after finishing just the rough mock-up of this design and i had the bright idea of running it past my lovely wife rachel and of course she told me exactly how it is she's like but i like the way it was before you changed it i don't like it now so like what do i do i don't know i'm really in two minds about this do i like it how it was or do i like it where it's going i think we'll just see what happens here we'll push through to the end and see what we come up with but we'll jump back in photoshop and let's play the three question game all right here we go okay what's working i kind of like this jagged messy wild feeling that we have with the rocks and this broken character i'm hoping that what's going to happen now is will flow from one place to the next to the next to the next to the next and it's got a bit more of a natural flow to it that could work although i need to be careful how i do this because i could really easily get into the situation where it's just becoming too bitsy so i've got to blend and flow some of these areas one with the next and i think the greenery's really going to help me with that the other thing that's not quite working for me is there's still something happening with this tree it could be a lighting issue i need something there do i need something there hmm does that tree need to be there what if i just painted that out i i think that's better i really do and then i think we could have trees catching a bit of light on this side but i think that works it kind of opens up the scene all right let's proceed let's go with that okay we'll bring that back we'll start working on a layer properly and uh let's carry on with this painting i'm excited for these changes we're gonna get radical here let's go [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] wow [Music] [Music] so
