angry and short-tempered and they're terrified of him they missed their three siblings who were living with their real father I remember lonely because I was missing people and sisters and I knew I Kenny has worked with victims of child sex abuse she's been looking into what happened June Louise Turnbull's childhood [Music] Louise is 3 years old when she first recalls being molested by her stepfather she can recall him touching her inappropriately now as a three-year-old child you basically have very little understanding of the actions of others towards you because if they're an adult you assume that that's acceptable so whilst Louise may have found it odd that she was being touched it wouldn't have coerced her alarm because she wouldn't have had an understanding of the world and the context in which that abuse was taking place the incident in the bathroom leaves Louise confused but even as a young child there was no mistaking the menacing atmosphere Krieger may were terrified all the time if him being around he started more or less straight away hitting Krieg is to get the blame for a lot of things and I used to be told but it wasn't for me it was that you know what was pedophile Albert's predilection is for small children particularly in this case small female children he's sexually motivated by them it's two levels the fact that for him sexually that's something that works for him but more importantly the fact that pedophiles love to exert control you know if they can contain a human being and own that human being that's very compelling for them Louise is terrified of her stepfather she's scared of upsetting him and too frightened to confide in anyone the abuse started to get worse it wasn't just touching and tickling I started to meet me touch him he began to take his clothes off his underwear would come off and I used to masturbate yourself lying next to me all the way his hands would be all over me too [Music] and then he progressed to me and me masturbating used to take a wall of my hand pulled around his penis but he would put his hand on top of me and then he used to masturbate Lee self with me hand on him Louise is worried by what's happening but she's too young to fully comprehends just how sickening her stepfathers actions are she feels isolated but I just didn't have anybody there I could tell I didn't have anybody that I his his my arms are being sate of his legs obviously the position and he would use the pillow to suffer kids but to see how far he could go before I would black out then I was scheming I was a scheme absolutely [Music] I'm not gonna remember standing there and shocked he seen me standing at the door and he sort of jumped off Creek but quit was just lying there and he was limp his lips were blue and he started gasping and he was coughing and I was just stood then in complete shock I couldn't believe what I was watching what I had seen but at the same time I was terrified I thought he's when I first seen him I thought he was dead I thought he had killed him former detective Superintendent David swindle has spent more than three decades investigating crimes involving violence and abuse he's been looking into Louise Turnbull's case in the early eighties when Louise and cake were abused things not definitely the police performed their role the social services performed their role know you the case of Louise sexual abuse the abuse gets progressively worse shortly before her 13th birthday Louise is raped by her stepfather just before me 30th birthday I think it was before was just before aggressively abusing her he tries to rape her initially at 10 years of age and then at 12 he actually succeeds ultimately the Louise her self-esteem would have been completely broken her confidence fractured her sense of self distorted because she would know at this point that what Albert was doing was grossly wrong but at this point the helplessness has arrived and she has nowhere to turn I went at the toilet and I cried thinking to myself he's gonna do that all the time he's not going to leave us alone and he didn't every opportunity he got you would have sex with us over the next few years Louise is raped by her stepfather on a regular basis sometimes two or three times a week it becomes part of everyday life I know it sounds some people may think oh how can you see that how can you just see it was part of everyday life but it was this had been happening to me since I was three years old and by this time I was you know I was like 14 my teeny J's was there was two different sides to it there was a Sade in the house where I was just this vulnerable little Louise that couldn't do anything to protect herself for help myself but yet outside of the house with me friends I was just a normal load gobby teenager really the obese Louise and Craig suffer remains a dark secret they share through the years then in October 1987 at the age of 15 Louise meets Michael Rea they start dating Michael is Louise's first serious boyfriend Fantin she was crossing the bridge next to where she lived torn what bridge Samina it was just it was like a breath of fresh air he was the sort of person straightaway I knew I didn't have to be afraid of him I knew he wasn't the push he came to person he didn't he wasn't like a typical addict he wouldn't push for anything sexual or anything like day louise finally decides she can't take it anymore she storms out and goes to see Michael as I got at the bottom of the stairs are tuned roamed in a locked room and I said you're never gonna touch me again and I swore at him and I ran out the door came knock on the door and we're all tearful I was what's what's wrong with his heart it's to talk about them in the minute did she run upstairs in the bathroom I saw he knocked on the door what's wrong tell us what's wrong schools just sat on the bathroom floor and I broke my heart cried like a baby for quite awhile I think Michael was worried because I wasn't answering him he was knocking on the door and asked him what was wrong then asking us to open the door and I just I couldn't I just needed that time eventually Louise comes out of the bathroom shaking with emotion she tells him that Albert has been abusing her for the past 12 years I remember I think he just couldn't do something he just held us that's cried cried and ground it's just family felt like such a relief to be able to see those words don't load to somebody and I knew he would believe us Louise is finally confided in someone but the long hard fight for justice is only just beginning the problem with sexual abuse is that predators are incredibly clever and so it's easier to think well this isn't really happening this is just a child making something up Louise Turnbull has been sexually abused and raped by her stepfather Albert mourn for the past 12 years I think to myself he's not gonna leave us at all and he didn't every opportunity he got he would have sex with us at the age of 16 she breaks down and confides in her friend Michael Ray that's cried cried ground it's just family felt like such a relief to be able to see those words out loud to somebody June 1988 and Louise Turnbull with the support of friend Michael plucks up the courage to go to the police and report the abuse [Music] two police officers took us into him is saying raw the Sun is down and they asked what had been happening and I told them that but had been abusing us since I was little by this point obviously I'd comment all told me sister me Darden your brothers and our Tracy started common with us she had to be me consent an adult there was just a lot of talking about that a lot of questions but I kind of got the sense that the weren't believing us Louise make statements charting the sexual abuse and rape she has suffered police interview other family members but Louise has no witnesses and well Albert mourn denies everything they dropped the case I was called into the police station that just came out and said I'm sorry to tell you but we won't be able to take this investigation any further we haven't got any physical evidence I was devastated absolutely devastated all those years have gone through that and finally having the courage to tell the police what he had been doing [Music] the gist then is a wing as far as I was concerned said they didn't believe us mentally I was absolutely destroyed the problem with sexual abuse is that predators are incredibly clever they usually select one victim and that victim therefore is the only one with that story there aren't other people able to validate that story and so it's easier to think well this isn't really happening this is just a child making something up and that is a huge problem when we do with sexual abuse the fact that very often the person who's suffering the person who's victim just does not get believed louise feels abandoned by the authorities and disgusted by herself she pushes away everyone she's close to Michael and me grew apart I just went off the rails really I didn't trust anybody I didn't want anybody to get too close to us I just pushed everybody away I didn't want anybody around us why would anybody want to be around me but each other time but for some reason uh she didn't want to contact me well I she thought I shouldn't be involved or optinal was going through air but that's hilarious and shit that I'm physically with it did affect we behavior and so Louise I was was pretty angry and a baby girl [Music] which completely changed us I settle down with a dad will went on to have another baby then I had a son and life was just normal the way life's supposed to be I had me two kids brought me kids up and live my life as best I could made the best war a hard but Louise is still haunted by the horrific abuse she endured and eventually unable to cope she separates from the father of her two children I'd start to see reports on the telly about all these different sexual abuse cases common to late and I started thinking to myself I wonder if something still could be done about what Albert did to me and also at the time we feel his grandchild was on its way I remember when she was born thinking to myself how could anybody hate somebody so small and so von Riverland how could anybody look in a little girl like that why would the one - and it just all started coming back it started to change my attitude to people started to change me behavior again I became very angry towards everything and everybody and for my own peace of mind I just had to go and see if they could do anything about it because I couldn't move on properly with my life until all of this was out in the open until he was punished for what he done to me no grief over the years [Music] [Music] Louise can't get the thoughts out of her head and then Michael ray her old boyfriend from more than two decades earlier contacts I think text Laura musta see a example of a strong individual who was determined that what happened to her should be brought into the public giving at the police station Louise is asked to give a statement only this time she senses investigation into the abuse that both Craig and Louise suffered in silence through much of their childhood it's grueling and painful but Louise is supported throughout by her old boyfriend Michael Ray gradually they rekindle their relationship of more than two decades earlier [Music] Albert mourn is to stand trial and now all the Wiis and Craig want is justice all the way he was looking at us ask for help but those children grow into adults so an adult's voice whether we like it or not have more power so the Louise this is her moment this is her opportunity finally to get the justice that she deserves February the 26th 2015 Albert mourn pleads not guilty to 23 counts of historic sexual abuse rape attempted rape and child cruelty looking back on what Albert was leik when I was younger he was 6 foot 1 17 and a half store he was a big man obviously I was just a little girl so to me was this big giant of a man the first day of the trail when I first seen him he was just this frail old looking man but I wasn't scared of him anymore Louise is called to give evidence against her stepfather when I was sitting in a witness room I could say useful in part for words I want this what tears witnesses will state nervous and she Aegon when he looked me in the eye and I looked him in the eye he was still trying Intimidators but it just didn't work I was too mentally strong for him by this point although I was terrified of Gorn and given evidence I wasn't gonna let him stop us I wasn't gonna let him take control again Louise is first questioned by the prosecution and then cross-examined by morn's legal team the whole grueling process takes a day and a half when we were actually in the court haven't give evidence haven't stand there all the way he was looking at us he was smirking he tray all I kept seeing was a need to have him see you guilty that's all I want I just wanted to hear those words guilty because that was recognition to me but I wasn't telling lies and I remember thinking to myself how terrified I was in case they didn't we walked into the courtroom I remember the judge telling them to let the jewelry in I had my daughter sitting next to us the whole family was around us in the jaw just on the first count how do you find and that first time I heard the first guilty that I heared I just heard him a very low would wheel and noise and realized it was me I just broke down started crying but then I just kept hearing guilty over and over again all of 23 counts 22 counts of various stages of sexual assault sexual abuse in UVM undetermined area and I got I got used to Swami self because he was given you know I miss the child clearly on meself he got a four year sentence for me and 12 years from usethis he got a 16-year sentence so I just thought to myself that's it you can just walk over here no hold your head up just move on it was very emotional time for her as well of all of us really more small father just to reaffirm but boy people believe that now people that didn't believe about then it was amazing to walk out of the court that dear no one that he was never ever going to be able to intimidate me intimidate me brother more importantly be able to do anything like that ever again to anybody the past is now the past is no shadows Hamid or anybody know with an enjoyable age though Craig is one of those human beings that recognizes that bitterness and hatred hurt the person hold and get far more than the person it's directed towards letting it go just moving on with your life being successful in your life that's the biggest reward without that moron locked up Louise and her brother Craig feel able to draw a line under the years of abuse and look to the future it's still quite a few things that trigger the memories bring things back if I smell a certain aftershave just certain situations the memories do come back us I do still have pretty horrific dreams don't think it's ever gonna go away but knowing that I finally got made justice does help Louise is one of those survivors that you wish for every victim to become she hasn't allowed Albert to block her wife to a degree where she can't live it he's not stopped her having great relationships are being loved because of that and her resilience and courage she's able to live a full life because that means that they win you know they're the ones in charge of their own world and they were Luise Michael now live together and the years of cruelty sexual abuse and rape inflicted by a man she should have been able to trust a consigned to history transferred to calm down largely Tapia who everybody something Bobby she's ami things really good life couldn't be any better than what it is now and the happiest I've ever been nor that I'm finally able to just move on
