my old college roommate in Dillon lives just outside of Denver and like most Colorado natives he loves to camp in fact he's the crazy kind of camper who does it all year-round regardless of the weather and when infuriates me the most is that if no one will go with them I'll go alone sometimes I try to check in on him by texting but usually he's so deep in the wilderness he's outside the range of any cell towers a few days ago he contacted me out of the blue while on one of his trips and at first the conversation was normal but then well see for yourself it started to scare me 2:30 p.m. yo I'm back in range changing course slightly but still alive so you can relax you're crazy man how cold is it not bad actually low 30s you've got to get your ass out here it's beautiful huh we'll see what the weather is like in the spring have fun man watch out for those forest staircases yeah real funny 7:44 a.m. dude are you up I am now what's up something weird I woke up this morning and there's someone else out here up on the mountain so it looks like you're not the only insane winter camper then no it's not a camper I can see him on the horizon but he isn't moving like at all what are you sure it's a person mm-hmm not sure it definitely looks like a person but he hasn't moved since I first spotted him 20 minutes ago he's about 300 yards away but standing completely still that's super creepy dude keep me updated 9:19 a.m. he still hasn't moved I'm going to go in for a closer look it's probably not a person dude let me know watch it be a stump or something it's a fucking scarecrow that's epic like a farmer scarecrow yeah but its clothes are weird though how so they're modern it's wearing a North Face black jacket and jeans and stuff its face is creepy a burlap sack with black eyes and a huge stitched smile why is this thing out here I'm tempted to steal the jacket I don't know dude I would leave it alone might be some sort of conservation study or something like to see if bears will attack it you might be on camera and I know you have shrooms on you good point speaking of which time to party huh have fun 3:33 a.m. someone's outside my tent fuck off dude I'm being serious I can see the shadow then call the cops do you have your knife I don't want to make any noise they probably still think I'm asleep yes I have my knife I'm texting from inside my about time you responded I barely slept I couldn't call the police because I don't know where you're at dude that North Face scarecrow is right outside my tent someone must have put it there last there's something else the Scarecrow was wearing my hat someone must have reached into my tent and grabbed it what the fuck dude that's not just cruel it's sick watch your back 9:13 a.m. oh shit my tires are slashed and there's another scarecrow by my car you're fucking kidding me please tell me you're calling the police hang on I'm checking the car and yes I'm calling them all right keep me informed I'll drive out there myself if you need me to 11:45 a.m. well what's going on 12:30 p.m. I'll text you later not safe now what does that mean dude what the fuck is happening 2:15 p.m. okay this is so messed up so much shit has gone down I don't know what to do my iphone is dying so I'm going to have to switch over to the shitty flip phone I use for work what the fuck dude what's been happening are you still in the woods I tried to start my car to get a quick charge for my iPhone but the engine wouldn't even turn over the Scarecrow is standing right in front of my car about a foot away it smells so bad dude like rotting meat I called the police and told them about the car and they transferred me to the ranger station that's when it got weird the Ranger seemed pretty relaxed about it at first but then I mentioned the Scarecrow and his tone changed okay changed how he became really serious and panicked he told me to abandon my car and start moving south on foot and he would meet me on the bluff by the bridge he told me to stay silent avoid lighting fires and ignore the scarecrows dude you're being pranked it's all a hoax I seriously doubt it there's some creepy stuff going on I walked by the spot where my campsite was last night the Scarecrow that was wearing my hat was gone dude you're still high seriously how hard did you indulge fuck you asshole I'm lucid and fucking freaking out alright fine I'm sorry so are you at the bridge are you waiting for the Ranger the bridge is out it's broken I have no idea where to go well shit stop texting me and call the cops again I did they say they're not getting through to the ranger station they told me to stay put but I feel like I'm being watched how's the battery in your phone just over half charge and stop wasting juice on me on getting in my car now and driving to the park visitor center that's a start I appreciate it dude talk later 344 p.m. dude I'm not shitting you the Scarecrow from my campus up a tree like in the highest branches it's been there the whole time I just now noticed it okay that's weird but no way it's the same one except it totally is I can't get a pic it's too high up on my camera so shitty there's also something dripping down off of it like it's a leaking that's not that weird it's probably been up there so long it's collected rainwater trust me it's not rainwater are you at the park I'm still in route it's getting dark I'm going to have to set up camp for the night it's going to be too fucking cold without a fire still no word from the park ranger 4:17 p.m. Dylan 701 p.m. due to my the park are you okay still by the bridge 2o 2 a.m. it's getting closer what is I've been here for hours with the cops trying to figure out where you are the ranger station is locked up where are you hmm fuck it's right next to me I'm behind a tree don't respond it might hear the chime of the phone it smells putrid 3:33 a.m. Dylan we're on the opposite side of the bridge we can see your tent but we can't get to you where are you 3:41 a.m. hello dude where the fuck are you hello listen fuck wait the cops left it's just me out here looking for you now I want answers or else you're on your own hello fuck it I'm heading back to my car are you scared 5:05 a.m. dude you're high I fucking hate you for making me drive all the way out here I'm leaving I drove back home as soon as the Sun was up I heard back from the police by the following day they found a way around the bluff to the far side of the bridge they found Daniels things but there was no sign of him however there was a scarecrow wearing his clothes in the trees close by it was stuffed with meat it's unclear what kind they couldn't find his phone the next day I woke up to this 7:45 a.m. come 7:55 a.m. find 8:05 a.m. me dude why the fuck are you doing this I spoke to your mom yesterday she's frantic stop fucking around in the woods and go home there was no response another day passed I visited Daniels mom and tried to calm her down I showed her some of the less upsetting text that he had sent me in an attempt to convince her that he would be alright I spoke to his boss and put in a good word for him hoping he wouldn't lose his job I checked in with the police department twice a day but there was still no sign of Dylan and no word from the ranger station in another half day he would be gone long enough to be officially considered missing and a search would be under way that night before I climbed into bed I sent Dylan a final text convinced that it would do no good his phone was likely long dead by now Dylan I'm more worried than pissed now you've got a lot of people upset we're not sure if we're ever going to see you again if you can give me a sign that you're alive my phone shined almost immediately she won't let me leave come say hello where are you who is she after ten minutes another message came in with latitude and longitude points my first response was to forward it to the cops but then I paused I entered the reference points into my phone and felt my heart sink he was anywhere near the bridge where he had originally disappeared he was on the completely opposite side of the mountain and less than an hour's drive away from me my phone chimes again come alone I got my car and drove having no idea what I was going to find I suspected that he either gotten shit-faced and got lost or more likely been found by some backwoods cult who had stolen all of his drugs but at least gave him a power source to charge his phone I drove as far as I could before I abandoned my car leaving it by the side of the road next to the woods I grabbed a baseball bat in a flashlight from my trunk and scanned the trees around me before I entered I tried calling Dylan he didn't pick up and his voice mailbox was full so I texted him again I'm at the edge of the woods can you get to me no response I again considered calling the police but even if they took a random text message as proof he was where he claimed to be and we take them far too long to make it here and if Dylan was hurt it was better to try and find him now I made my way into the woods using my phone's compass as best I could to navigate after what felt like another hour of stumbling and getting turned around in the dark I received another message I can see you I immediately called out his name where are you signal me a moment after I sent the text there came a tremendous thundering from only a few dozen yards away the trees started to sway and I felt the ground beneath me quake as if something massive was moving its bulk I froze to afraid to move and too confused to act another text appeared on my screen I'm coming to get you fuck this I had enough I turned to sprint back through the forest when a man appeared behind me pointing a gun between my eyes he was disheveled filthy and bleeding from numerous wounds in his chest and arms I recognized the emblem on his tattered shirt as a representative of the Park Service he was a ranger when he spoke to me he was breathless and clearly in pain hold it I froze in my tracks but I didn't lower the bat or the flashlight where's Dylan the Ranger gestured with his gun towards the steadily approaching noise you had his phone the whole time the Ranger shook his head no she must have him I glanced behind me now while I couldn't see anything clearly the smell of putrid meat started to overwhelm my senses so badly I could practically taste it in the back of my throat what is she I don't know she crawled up from the depths of the earth so hell I guess I can't let you go it's either going to take you or take us both I have a family wait you've been feeding it I've done what I could to survive and protect the population she used to be content with forest animals but then it became the occasional hiker in camper now she's gotten bigger her appetite has gotten out of hand she's trying to reach a more heavily populated area I try to keep him talking as I inched forward distracting him putting him in closer range of my bat what are the scarecrows all about I used to bury all the bodies but she ate so much I couldn't dig holes deep enough she told me to do it display the meat like trophies attract more victims wait display the meat I thought you said she was eating them the Ranger shook like his blood had gone cold she peels off the flesh and eats the bones I braced myself again and looked back over my shoulder something enormous and spider-like had emerged from the darkness I could make out its long crooked legs like pointed javelins its body cocooned in the rotting flesh of its victims there was teeth like flaming knives perfect for skinning a victim alive and discarding the flesh she's killed all of my coworkers I'm the last one the only thing left to stop her leaving the woods please you have to let her I swung my bat and connected with a man's head the crunch of bone and the spray of bloody mist distracted me for only a second before I picked up the Fallen gun and emptied the entire magazine into the thing that had killed my friend the creatures shriek like a banshee [Applause] and I sprinted blindly back through the woods never once looking behind me and the streams of the park ranger being consumed by an echoing demonic chorus I wondered lost in the woods for over four hours when I emerged I was back where I had left my car it was gone something enormous had dragged it off the road and into the woods tearing it apart like a napkin the Sun was still up when a local man graciously pulled over and drove me into town I'm now sitting on a park bench across from the police station shaking uncontrollably wondering what I'm going to say when I walk in there in the distance I can hear a rumbling sound something is getting closer and the stench of old meat is starting to stab at me I just got another message there you are there's always a reason to be afraid
