My Favorite Tesla After Owning All 3 Models

- So I've owned all three Tesla's now for, oh, quite while actually and I have a lot of thoughts on it. Each one has its pros and its cons and I'm really tryna figure out which one is my favorite because in the end there can be only one. - There can be only one. - Now a lot of the things I'm gonna talk about today you're gonna disagree with and that's okay because this is my opinion about owning these specific vehicles. So just keep that in mind before you jump to the comment section. Let's go. (upbeat music) I'm not the only one that's been driving these cars, my wife Jenny has as well, so I thought it made sense to bring her along for the review. Let's start with our newest addition to the family the Model X. One reason we ended up getting a Model X is because we have a growing family. Is it a mango now? - Sweet potato. Sweet potato. And so obviously the Model X offers quite a bit more storage and more seating than any of the other cars we have. So first let's start with the pros, the things we like about the Model X. For me acceleration is a big deal and this one is a P90D with Ludicrous and ludicrous+ and so you get that reaction. That is just a major thing, it's easily the fastest one we own. - Like your dad's reaction yesterday? My dad almost lost his dinner and was afraid to go for a second time, it's that kind of crazy. So that's a big one and I think it actually helps keep you safe in some way or another, it's kind of weird. - So I haven't driven the X much, but what I will say from the little bit I've ridden in it and driven it, that car is very extra. (Ben laughs) It is, people get in it and it feels like a monorail windshield. - [Ben] The windshield is amazing. - It feels like it's to take off into space, I mean it's just everything about. - The falcon wing doors, yeah. - So for Jack, he's almost four, he thinks this car is amazing - Yeah. And the doors are very showy and stuff. Sometimes I wonder if it's a little too much car? - Yeah, it's about as over the top as you can get with a car really. - It seems like it, yeah. - And I the thing I really like, considering our vehicles for this, is the range. Now it's not as much range as the Model 3, - Right. but at 245 miles or so for an SUV that is really comfortable to drive, with the air suspension - Yeah. - which is also really nice. I think this is our road trip car. It also gets free unlimited Supercharging 'cause it's a 2016. And one thing that I thought was really interesting that I just discovered one day driving, Tesla only did this for a small period of time, they make cooled seats. So where you do the heated seat there's a button there below it said COOL, I went, one day, I accidentally clicked on it and it just blew my mind, I was just completely lost. I didn't even know it had it and when it gets warm, especially with that big windshield it gets really hot in there sometimes. - Yeah - I think that is a bonus. - Has it been a problem at all with the windshield being so large and these tiny little windshield visors? - Yeah so, what happens is the visor comes out from the side, the, you know, kind of the frame of the car and it connects to the little thing via a magnet, and then it folds down and then it has another thing that folds down. So it's-- - So you've had no problem? - I've had no real problem and it's only when the sun is kind of right in center, center like eye sight - Yeah. - not above 'cause once it goes above it's fine, obviously. So I think the storage is another thing that's really good about it. The the back seats fold down, but this is the 6 seat configuration so the middle ones don't go down. - Yeah, it's really comfortable. I know a lot of people really love a car that's higher and I notice it, and it's not like a super high car. It doesn't have that - Yeah. - really tall SUV, like if the pull yourself into it, but it's enough to where it's comfortable and your line of sights is really good. - Right. - And it's not like a huge SUV to drive. - Right, It's technically I think a crossover SUV. - Yeah - So it's enough car where you have, yeah it's really comfortable, you have a lot of storage. - Right. - But it still has a lot of range and the performance is crazy so I really like, I think it's a fantastic car. - Okay, you like it? Everything about it so far? - I mean there are some things that aren't great, and we can talk about those, the dislikes for the model X. One of them is-- - It's quirky, there's some quirky things - Yeah. - when a car has so much technology. Like when the doors open on their own. - Correct, yeah. So, the automatic doors, the driver door when you're walking up will open automatically for you and this seems like a really cool feature. You don't even have to touch the door, you walk up, it detects exactly at the right time, you get in you press your foot on the brake and it closes. The ultimate bougie, high-end kind of feature. I can't be bothered to open my own door, right? However what happens is you just trying to walk by your car, at times, and it opens right into you. - Yeah, it trips you. - I definitely got hit by it. And then also, if you're on a busy street and you're walking up to your car, the door just fly's open. - Yeah. - So it can be a bit dangerous. So some of those those extra over the top features can be problematic as well, they cause issues. - Yeah I agree, there's a few things with it that I thought it was gonna have more space than it actually does. So it's the captain seats are super comfortable, - Correct. - the front is super comfortable. The very way, way back - Yep. - is not what I expected. I thought that's maybe where when we were taking people on a drive that my dad would sit back there. - Yeah. - And I would actually feel like you'd put your smallest person in the back, like younger kids that aren't in car seats. But then-- - Or booster seats? It actually has - Or booster seats. - I think four kids car seats in the back. - Yeah. - That seems kind of far. - The captain seats are the comfortable ones, but when you have big car seats - Yeah. - people have recommended that we put them in there so they don't touch and there no fighting. - Right, this is a big thing for road trips, is you can put the kids, as we'll have two, in each car seat and put a cooler. I mean there's so much room between them and the chairs kind of hover - Right. - above the ground so you can put stuff underneath them, so there's a lot of nooks and crannies in there. But you know with a lot of those features come these quirks and some of the issues. So the falcon wing doors are like a blessing and a curse, like I love them, but I also kind of hate them sometimes because they're very sensitive about about how they'll open, and they change the arc depending on what's there. But there are just a lot of situations where they just won't really open that much and it's really hard to get in and out. - Yeah, and then sometimes they're amazing for when it's raining a little bit - Yeah. - and they protect you. - Well talk about just getting your son in and out of his car seat. - That's that's probably the most-- - You don't have to bend over - Yeah. - you stand totally straight up and definitely helps the back. I mean, there's so many good things there. Yeah, that's probably the most ideal thing is just because, when you have a little baby car seat or when you're trying to get a 30 pound kid in that's not gonna climb in himself. - Yeah. - there's a lot of maneuvering and this one, it's just you're standing upright and you can just do it. How do you like Autopilot on it? - Yeah, so this has Autopilot version one and it is fantastic. (laughs) I actually really prefer Autopilot 1 currently because it doesn't do everything Autopilot 2.5 or 3 does or will do. But it does the lane keep really well, it does changing lanes much more confidently than any of the other, than the newer, our Model 3 or any of the newer versions of Autopilot. And it doesn't do Navigator in Autopilot, but honestly for what I use it for I think it's fine. I think it's super useful and I that was one of the big reasons why we upgraded essentially because part of the idea behind getting this car was upgrading to Model S and when we looked at all of our options this is kind of fell into our lap in a perfect scenario, so it gave us what we wanted, more range and Autopilot. - Yeah for you, it was not having Autopilot or range. You use it a lot more but-- - Yeah, so let's talk about our first Tesla. What so you think of Electra? - [Jenny] Oh, I heart Electra. - Me too. So are first Tesla. By the time you guys are watching this she may no longer be ours because we're selling her. - Yeah, the Model S, I think a few things. I feel like they knocked it out of the park with design and style and everything. Me personally, I don't need that big of a car - Right - because it's a full sedan, so it has the full width, full length - yeah and with that comes a ton of storage though. - That car, there has never been a time where I cannot fit something in that car. And we also have an older thrunk. - Yep - so our thrunk, literally you could slide a whole folded stroller into it, - Yep. - when our son was eight months old and we went on road trips we even put his toys in there and let him play there while we were charging. - It's amazing. Yeah, amount of storage in the Model S, or in our Model S specifically - Yeah - was pretty, pretty incredible. - So I just feel like there's never been a time on that car where I've wished there was more storage, - Right. - it has a ton. - And the Power Liftgate is really nice. Which actually there - Yeah. - I think there was a time when they didn't offer that or that was a premium upgrade. - Oh really? - Yeah, so it's kind of weird, I remember I rented one and I was like, why does this not, - Yeah. - yeah that's a pretty nice feature too. - Yeah, it's a nice looking car and then functionally like it has its hatchback, it has a Liftgate, - Yeah - the seats fold down. I remember when I would shop for cars, it was surprising how many cars had premium leather and the seats didn't fold down. - Yeah, right. - Or would be surprising how many cars don't have liftgate's, you pay-- - Yeah. And so with the seats folding down it's, I mean I slept in there one night. - Yeah, it's a camping car. - We camped in the car, whereas in the Model X I don't think we could do that because of those captain's chairs. - You can fit a surfboard in it. - Yeah. - You can fit - a full length surfboard. - You we can fit everything you need to fit in there. - Yeah. - The things that are tough for me with this one specifically are range because it has 200 miles of range on its best day, - Yeah. - and it doesn't have any version of Autopilot. This is a driver's edition car as we would like to say. - But if you had the newer Model S it would still have all that Autopilot and stuff-- - Yeah, the newest Model S has all the latest and greatest features, so-- - Yeah, for me it's definitely, like I could picture, like we fit pretty much everyone in it. - Yeah. - It does have that lower feel which if you've driven a Tesla before you've probably experience this more. Sometimes it's more fun to drive, than it's to ride it. - Totally. And the S is a perfect example of that because it has a lower. - Yeah. I've noticed-- - Not as roomy in you headroom in the back. - Yeah I noticed the X people don't get as. It's just so zippy that you'll literally, you'll start to see your passengers feeling a little woozy. - Yeah. - And it's because the ceiling is low, it's really fast, it has a lot of pickup. - Now something I do really love about our Model S, which is in common with the Model X, is the screens. So you might have-- - You like having the two. - You have two screens which gives you a ton more real estate and makes navigation and all this stuff just better. And also the middle screen is just so big. - Okay, so this is a total con for me. - You know, it's massive. - Really? - I think the S on the inside looks like an old person car. I do! I think it's got so much wood and it's just-- - That's it we're done. That's it, cut. (laughs) - I mean after seeing like the more minimalist style of the 3, - Right. - I feel like what you love about that car, like the things my dad used to pick out in his car. He wanted it roomy, he wanted to not feel like he was right next to someone when sat next to 'em. - Are you calling me an old man? - No it's just, it's not a car I would pick out because it's just a little bit too much ornateness. - Sure, sure. No, I do admit that some of the bezels and a lot of those things are a bit dated at this point. - So those are some of the things that are pros to you, you love the comfort, the roominess, the big-- - I love, yeah I love that kind of. I would rather have a luxury vehicle than a sports vehicle, right? - Yeah! So I would consider this a luxury sedan that-- - That's still crazy fast. - It's really fast and-- - Ours isn't that fast but, you know. - Yeah, I mean they-- - Like the other ones. - Yeah so it's just like a. But it's not something that-- - So let's talk about the one that you drive every day. Tes, the Model 3 - Tes, yeah, the Model 3. Yeah. - What are your biggest pros about the Model 3? Well, I've never had a new car. So the biggest pro is just it smells new, it is new. So I feel like if when people ask me a lot about the S and the 3, my opinion? I'm like, if you want the newest, the latest, the greatest, the Autopilot version, you like the smell of it, then go for that one. Because most of the time it has everything you're gonna need. - And it has all the kind of latest bells and whistles for Autopilot, - Yeah. - The hardware etc, etc. - Right. I feel like they're very different, the X, the S and the 3 and the 3 is kind of on its own little path. The interior is completely different, - Right. - where the X and the S are more similar - Very similar. - I personally love the style of the interior on the 3 - Yeah. - because I'm comfortable in there. When I sit down I can reach the armrest, the steering wheel is comfortable and I love the sporty drive. - Yep. So, we can talk about that for a minute, 'cause I like the interior of the Model 3 as well. You're right, and my friend Tim had a really good point, where on the S and X, where your arm goes is where the cup holders are. - That is annoying. - So it's so weird. And our Model S has what's called a yacht bottom, so there's no center console, it's just totally open. Which is kind of cool, 'cause you can fit big things down there, - Yeah. - but you have no other cup holders except where your arm goes, so it's kind of a weird thing. But the Model 3 they didn't do, they corrected a lot of those little quirky design features. - For as sporty as the Model 3 is, it's really for me, I'm really comfortable in it. - Yeah. - Has a smaller steering wheel - Yep. - [Jenny] I can reach my, I mean you can just reach everything, - Yeah. the screen right there. - [Ben] So let's talk about it because-- - That could be a negative for a lot of people though - Yeah. - because I can touch probably the other door. - Well for me, the thing is that the screen is, it's a fine size if the left panel which has the car and the speed and stuff wasn't there. If I had some way to keep that information in front of me that would be much more useful because I feel like it's just too small for as much information as you're trying to put on there, right? So you have the whole like left third of it for the car, then you have the media stuff on the bottom, - Yeah. - the music, the podcasts, whatever. - Yeah. - Then you have up above that your map and where you're going. - It's a lot and a small screen. - And if you have directions, like navigation going, that takes up another section of it. - Yeah. - So, I feel like when I'm driving, especially that I don't drive it everyday, anymore. When I look over it's really hard to try to figure out what's going on and it's a bit distracting. I know when I drove it everyday I got pretty used to it, but now that I get an S and an X, I'm like, oh this is like much more, for me anyway, it's just easier. Maybe my eyes are going, I don't know. - It took some time to get used to driving at night with no front panel in front of you. - Yeah, that's weird. - There's no lights, there's no speedometer, there's no nothing. So you're in a dark car-- - It would be cool just put a little a little LED strip or something there that just could remind you that the car is on and things like that. - Yeah, it's definitely a weird experience the first few weeks - Yeah. - slash months that you're driving a car and it doesn't have a lot of lights and-- - How do you feel about the performance and all that? - That part, that's like one of my favorite parts. - Yeah. - Just a really fun car to drive. When I drive it mostly it's on my own and to pick up Jack after school, and other than that it's not really the car we drive when we're all together - Right. - and I found it to be perfect for that situation. Where it doesn't hold up is when we're road tripping or just an everyday putting kids in there, people in there. - Yeah, right. Yeah, it's not the most functional, right? - But it's so fun to drive, - Yeah. - it's one of the most fun. - Easily - I can park and almost-- - It's small, it's a super responsive. - Yeah, I can park in almost every spot. - Yep. - Living in a city, living in a place that has small spaces, never had a problem there. Now I will say it is very technological as well, I don't know if that's the right word you use with it? But I've not used half of the stuff it has. So I don't take advantage or use Autopilot, it's just not something I have had to use. But I do like adaptive cruise control, - Yeah. - on road trips and on the freeway. - Which is a part. It's really Autopilot, when you call it that, is like a bunch of little features - Yeah. - and that's one of 'em. - Yeah so there's a lot of the new features I've not taken advantage of Sentry Mode, haven't really taken advantage of. The park assist, it will auto park for you - Yeah. - I haven't really take advantage of. So it's a little bit, again, too much car for me. - Yeah, a bit beyond, yeah. - Yeah, just because I don't think I really use Autopilot to its fullest. I know how do now, but I don't really use it. - And when I was driving it regularly I had the similar kind of things I loved. I felt the same way about the performance and all these things, but I was obviously much more pushing the boundaries with Autopilot and stuff. - Yeah. - I did have issues with Autopilot though and that's where actually I think I should do a video on this. There's a whole difference between Autopilot 2.5 and 3 versus 1. And so I definitely feel much more confident with 1 than the newer one, so I get what you're saying about all that - Yeah, just don't really ever need it in that scenario, but-- - Right because you're just using it as a quick commuter. - Now tell me about the things that maybe you don't love about it. What could be better about this car? - 100%, I would not have picked out this car because I loave the lack of latch on the trunk. - The power gate? The Power Liftgate? - No Power Lifegate and no hatchback. To me, that's-- - Yeah, the hatchback is a big deal. - But I wouldn't of bought any car that doesn't have a hatchback. I remember - Yeah. - as far back as I can remember, I like to be able to pick up an item that. I mean, I bought something the other day, it was one foot by two feet with a box around it, it did not fit in the Model 3. - Yeah. - I can't tell you how many times I have to go back and pick something up with a different car. - And it's a weird thing to, 'cause I've talked to a lot of people and they're like "oh my god, it has so much room." And I'm like hmm, try to fit a chair there. - So It's not having room, it's about the opening size. - Right. - You had a Honda Accord that was the same. - Yep. - It has a lot of room interior if you don't have a car seat you put the seats down, - Yep. it has only a room - Right. You can fit a surfboard through there no problem. - It's that the opening is this big and you have to be careful because with any car that doesn't have an auto, what does that thing called? - A Power Liftgate. - It doesn't have a Power Liftgate and so that thing, you you do have to close it. - Yep. - Like you really have to make sure it's closed how it's suppose to be. - Yeah, so if-- - So that really bothers me. (laughs) - So if this car had a Power Liftgate and a hatchback would it be perfect? - Yes, because the size I love. How fast it is, I love. But-- (laughs) - Model Y is what she's describing exactly. They really shouldn't call it the Model Y, it should be called the Model 3 hatchback. - So that's exactly, when we got this, when we actually saw it and saw what it looked like and took delivery of it. I said, "I want this but with the hatchback version." - There you go, yeah, exactly. - I just let me have a hatchback version, I'll pay them more money for it, I will pay extra for the auto Liftgate. - Yep. - This is just like, not functional to me, compared to. That's something that I feel is hard to go back from-- - Yeah once you have it it's so, yeah. - It's just necessary, I use it a lot. The range is amazing. Yeah, that's why we road tripped in it a couple times and it's been great, 'cause you-- - 300 miles is-- - 325 it says now, yeah. - It's a game-changer, you can do anything with that. - So for me that the things I wasn't in love with with the Model 3 was the screen in the middle, that was a big one. The steering wheel, the size of the steering wheel was fine. - It's sporty. - The size of the steering wheel was fine, but the buttons, they're just a little hard to push and they're not nearly as kind of like, I don't know, smooth and just just just well designed as the S and X. I think those were just easier to deal with. - Yeah. - And I drove it every day for six months, so it's not like I just barely touch it on the weekend. - Yeah, the hatchback is a big deal, the Power Liftgate, that's not a big of a deal for me, but it would be a nice feature considering you're paying a lot of money for the car. - 'Cause the interior storage feels that I'm fine to me. Especially like it has the little cup holders in the spot, where you put your phone, all that feels okay to me. It's just for a family car - Yeah, yeah. - It leaves a lot to be desired. - Tryna put two kids back there and all that so. - It's really cozy, I think we said in our review of the Model 3, how much a kid has their feet in your back. - Yep, the back of your seat does not look that pretty. - Everything else I like about it. The key card, they could have done without that as well. - Yeah, and there is a key fob now, but it doesn't have passive entry. So you have to pull it out and click it two times, in order for it to open. So, - yeah I don't like that. - if they could make that better I think that that would be a big one as well. - But I have gotten the phone to work and I think that's so cool - Yeah, it's one of those things where we got it's super early and so we've had a lot of issues, but I think that's 'cause it was a 2, and the first 2,000 that were ever made, so. - Yeah, I will say this car had more issues with like, I want some analog version. - Yeah. - Because there's times where your phone's dead, I don't have to rely on my phone - Exactly, right. - so heavily need to where if I forgot my phone somewhere, if it's dead, I can't get into my car. - Yeah. - So you have to carry this key card kind of with you no matter what as an emergency. - Right, right. And that kinda defeats the purpose of having, that it be your phone, yeah. - It's the smallest thing, it's not a big deal. - But if they just had a passive entry with the current key fob I think that would make a big difference - Right. - because the Model S works that way, the Model X works that way, I don't know why the Model 3 doesn't work that way. - Does it bother you that it doesn't have glass roof? - Yeah, okay, that was the other thing, so the Model Y does have that, where it's a full glass panel. This one has a pillar across there, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me - I don't notice. because no there's no-- - It doesn't bother me - Well, right, if you're if you're in the back I think is where - Oh, okay, yeah. - is when I'll be, really notice. - This is again another vehicle because it's so zippy that your passengers will get sick. (laughs) - Yep, yep. - It's just these smaller cars they feel... - So final answer. - What's my favorite? - which one it-- - It doesn't exist yet, it's not out yet. - I rode in it, I rode in it. - Oh, okay. It hasn't been delivered into my hands yet. - So let's do this, let's do two things. Which is your favorite of these three? And then which would be your ideal car? I think we've already hashed that out, but love these three. Now that I drive the 3 all the time, I will say I kinda missed parts about the S. - Yep. - Mostly the convenience of loading up the trunk, - Yep. - loading up whatever I come across. I mean like, I just want to be able to throw something in and it does. - So, is it the S? I'd probably say overall car I would choose the S. Really? I'm in regular love with the 3 but-- - Now I'm going to not choose the S, - What? - for these three. - Oh, because you like the, oh okay then. - Of these cars, Model X is easily my favorite because of the performance, for one is so fun, that never gets old. I know and Autopilot and range, I mean those are all great things, like-- - I feel like you need all that technology, like you almost need all the technology of the 3, but the 3 is just not enough car for you. - Well, I went from the 3 to that, so definitely even that is a step back in terms of Autopilot, 'cause it has Navigator in Autopilot - Yeah. - all these other advanced features, Model X doesn't have that. So it kind of was the best of both worlds. If I could have any car of the ones that are currently available my ideal car would be the top spec performance Model S.
