[Music] hi everyone welcome to my channel i'm a formal analyst at goldman sachs and i'm here to share my experience at the firm just for some more background i was with the insecurities division which now became global markets division and i joined the firm through their typical analyst program there are many divisions within goldman including investment banking engineering risk legal and more but the one i was in is global market largely within global markets there's equity products and fixed income products i was mainly dealing with fixed income products and my main role was to maintain and facilitate any new businesses i work very closely with the client and internally i work closely with sales legal risk and many other teams so now i will show you a typical day in my life and at the end of the video i will answer some of the questions that you might have my typical day starts at 7 in the morning i would normally wake up around 6 15 to get ready for work but since we've started working from home i've been waking up right before i have to start i start my day by making myself some coffee and breakfast normally i would eat cereals or oatmeals at the desk but since we've been working remotely i've been making more decent breakfast as i drink coffee i check my emails and my meeting schedules for the day so for work i had day to day work to help the client but as i gained more experience i got more involved in different types of projects and project is what i enjoy more i will work closely with change management which is the project management equivalent an engineering team to automate any of the process that we have or to improve the current platform that we're using for meetings there are three different types first one is an external meeting which is the meeting with the client and second one is internal meeting and there are several internal meetings so for example if you have a client meeting that afternoon we would have internal meetings with all stakeholders before to discuss what we're gonna discuss with the client that day or you can have internal meetings with your own team to discuss your priority or if you're in a project you will have internal meetings with engineering with project management just to discuss the pipeline or just to discuss the priority and the last meeting is one-on-one i would have regular one-on-one with my manager or my mentors and sometimes i would reach out to a complete stranger to network and just to learn from their experience it's pretty much the same for the rest of the day i will eat lunch at the desk and i'll have more meetings more work and i'll be done with my day or anytime between 5 30 to 6 30. after work i like to go to the gym for at least 30 minutes before i eat dinner which leads to the first topic that i wanted to discuss which is work life balance so my work hours is usually anywhere between 55 hours a week to 65 hours a week and this is honestly not that bad compared to a lot of other teams within the firm every team is different so some teams might work less some teams might work more but usually bare minimum is 50 hours a week and especially for front office i've definitely seen people working 70 80 90 hours a week but then again every team is different and everyone is different even within my team there were people who were working 70 hours a week and there were people who are working 50 hours a week it also depends on the time of the year for my team we were extra busy for month end quarter end and year-end another thing that people might be curious about is the promotion cycle so the title you will get when you first join right off college it would be analysts and within two to three years if you get promoted you will get promoted to associate and then to vice president and then to managing director or md and then to partner and to get promoted you have to be top analyst or top associate or just top in your class and you'll be able to know where you stand because every year we get reviewed so how reviews work is that we request eight people to review us anonymously and give us feedback and towards the end of the year our managers will combine those feedback along with their own feedback and let us know where we stand so you'll be able to know if you're q1 q2 and so on you can definitely plan for promotion throughout the year one of the efficient thing that i've seen is that you basically print out the job description for the next level so if your analyst print out the job description for associate level and see what criterias you need in order to make associate another thing that i wanted to mention is that goldman will sponsor you so if you're on a visa or if you do need visa goldman will sponsor you from opt opt stem to h1b personally my experience was good goldman uses a third-party vendor for visa issue and they were able to guide me step by step so i had no issues with my whole process to finish up i want to share some of the important lessons i've learned one of the lessons i've learned is the importance of transparency since day one i told my manager what i'm trying to achieve what i'm trying to work on what are my strengths what are my weakness and because she knew that she was able to recommend me for different types of projects that will help me to achieve my goals so one-on-one meetings like the one that i have with my manager is one way to be transparent and another way to be transparent is to post regularly one way to post is to send out an email listing out what you have accomplished to all the stakeholders including senior management and at the time posting culture was really weird because i grew up hearing that being humble is the greatest virtue so it felt like i was bragging for doing my job but later i learned that posting is not about bragging but just creating transparency by letting other people know what you've done you can create an image of yourself and creating an image or creating yourself brand is important because in a firm like goldman sachs where there are tons of employees you need to be known as a subject matter expert at certain areas and another lesson that i learned is that they're all humans too it's funny to say because it's so obvious but what i'm trying to say is that everyone made mistakes everyone learns something new at one point everyone has their lives outside of work like their families and acknowledging that fact is important especially when you just start working it will feel like everyone else is so smart and you know nothing and you're gonna make a ton of mistakes and it's okay because everyone else did too that's what humans do we learn from our mistakes and similarly if you have something going on in your personal life outside of work that's okay like everyone probably has something going on outside of their work too so just acknowledging that for yourself acknowledging that for other people will be very important in building relationships and that is everything that i have for today if you have any further questions please comment down below thank you for watching
