already had the date circled on my calendar that my arcade was going to release this new space invaders mini player in their kind of premium line of these new little tiny cabinets i was already gonna pick it up i was already probably gonna review it but what sealed the deal was so many of our viewers like john h basement mini arcade ultra slain monkey and the person who all said john you should review this new space invaders i get it the audience has spoken here it is here we go hey there welcome back to gen x grown up i'm john i am a gen x grown up but i want to thank you for checking out this video and the rest of the channel yeah so this new space invaders from my arcade there's a lot of promise here now i will say that ever since i saw it was coming out and people started reviewing it i have insulated myself from the reviews i don't want to be at all influenced by what other people have to say about this but some things were unavoidable like i know that it's double the price of the other my arcade micro players at 40 bucks instead of the 20 or 25 bucks i know that it's quite a bit deeper than the regular my arcade we'll get to that in a second and also generally i'm hearing positive things about it that have got me really excited and interested about what they're doing with the space invaders so let's start with that higher price point why well they're doing some things with this that go above and beyond what they've done with other things the first that i've heard and expect is true now you can't play this in the box before you buy it but it has a real genuine arcade rom but they've also done some other things where they try to simulate that projected moonscape and that in a consumer item like this a standalone game that's pretty amazing so as you can see it's quite a bit deeper as i said than the traditional thing and to quote the illustrious 1990s or mix-a-lot space invaders [Music] and i think we're going to find that the red beans and rice were not wasted here this is not empty space this is used to affect and i'm really excited to see what they do so let's take this space invaders crack open the box and see for ourselves what this version has to offer we started with the price knowing this was not your typical my arcade micro player the next place you look probably is the design of the box look at this like very kind of shiny glittery reflective looking material for the blue and space invaders and then finally whoo look at this beast it's maybe 50 again deeper than the the other my arcade units so you know up front that there's something special going on here all right let's see what we've got inside here all right this is interesting this that's instructions don't need those uh but this let's take a quick peek at this because we've got the space invaders on here and some more stuff that we know is coming up contra coming soon we heard about that this street fighter is supposed to be a real uh genuine arcade rom looking forward to that this is in this premium edition titles all right but enough of this let's get on to space invaders [Music] [Laughter] so look at this beast wow there's some stuff to talk about here i've always said my arcade does a great job of the side art and here they just went absolutely bananas look at this it's i mean gorgeous this is it's a decal but what a heavy decal it is and just vibrant colors of that original space invaders design it takes a little bit of liberty with the original arcade cabinet but my goodness all right let's talk about what we've got so the power button down here is still the coin thing i love that the insert coin is a little uh 100 yen token that's pretty nice we've got to quickly talk about these controls let's start with the joystick this is not your typical my arcade kind of plastic bat screwed into a d-pad this is a metal shaft kind of ball top traditional feels like a four-way joystick maybe with a two-way restrictor plate on it a bit wow on the top we have a reset button kind of in a dangerous location one player two players start typical and your fire button there's that front speaker they just did a little cutout in the artwork so there's no like pronounced speaker location there and then on the back like so many of the my arcades you have a headphone jack you have the plus and minus volume rocker you can power this with micro usb or four double a batteries which is what i'm gonna do and let's peel our artificial space invaders off of the screen let's get it on okay now this is going to be a challenge to convey on video but for starters you can see we have an illuminated marquee up here we put tokens in now you'll notice the game is out of focus that's because this game doesn't have a screen you look at per se it like has a it has a tunnel you look into so that moonscape is projected on the back wall of the device and then there is a kind of tilted screen that you can see there that is being reflected onto that backdrop wow so all right so i'm just going to shift the camera so you can see the game clearly so just know what we have in terms of controls and the illuminated marquee all right here's another shot in some better lighting and you can see there's the actual screen being rejected in reverse and how it's reflecting up onto this backdrop and if i rotate it you can see how the rom's contents is being projected it slides around on that giving this really nice like parallax effect so let's put some money in and uh give it a shot turn it up seems awfully quiet there's a little sound it's it is awfully quiet that's full volume oh it is absolutely 100 original arcade rom that's why these are these premium micro players yes please thank you give me a hundred more of these i'm just i'm just going to enjoy this for a minute so i have to say if this looks cool to you just double it because on video it kind of isn't done justice it feels so flat on video as i look at it on the screen here but it feels it has so much depth it could be a little louder i have a full blast this is really something kind of remarkable so i'm zoomed way in because keep in mind you saw how thick this box is i'm looking like to the back of the box almost that is years of shooting space invaders ufos at that time it is a real shame that you can't try this before you buy i think they would sell triple of these nothing short of amazingly respectful to the original material the same kind of wow factor that you've got the first time that they added that backdrop to space machines and what they've done it here boom alien boom got him and a reminder again all this is happening deep inside of this box in such a way that really just immerses you into space invaders at the risk of over hyping the space invaders i will say that this could be a paradigm shift in what people can and should come to expect in these tabletop units short of buying a genuine space invaders cabinet i don't think you can come much closer to the original experience than this now you could get something more expensive that play space invaders with the original rom but it wouldn't have that projected moonscape on it but for space invaders it's a game changer it really really it evokes the feeling of the original what you had standing in front of that machine in the arcade now at forty dollars the expectations are going to be a little bit higher as they should be and i will say that my arcade has largely delivered on all of my expectations i mean even the scuttlebutt that i heard i was really building it up in my mind that i was afraid that it would kind of not live up to that hype and by and large i think it has now the biggest kind of detriment to this unit has got to be the sound space invaders just had that thumping thumping audio so listen here's an original space invaders listen how the marching and thumping of the invaders as they tear across the screen bring that frenetic pulse quickening effect to the game and that's totally missing from this one you hear the sound but it's really tinny and i get you couldn't put a sub woofer in this with an amp and everything but that definitely takes away a bit from the game but this is no slouch so this 2020 version this premium space invaders from my arcade i am going to give it four and a half tokens out of five what a great great unit a great way to play space invaders and what a great great peek into what very well may be to come in the future of these tabletop collectible arcade machines as they continue to step up their game and deliver a more premium product that's aimed just at us generation x arcade hounds that lived and breathed these games growing up man i hope you found something to enjoy in this video and i will talk to you next time bye bye hey you made it to the end if you liked this video the best way to say thanks is to watch one more here are a couple suggestions that you just might enjoy and if you love our content
