streaming hey everyone happy friday today is going to be a master class i guess they're all master classes but we're going to go with a 45-minute class typical class length whiteboard drilling the basics a lot of you they're like man why should we keep going over the basics because they're things that everybody needs to know we're not going to start with a circle of fifths though but i am going got to be able to recognize chords what they sound like whether they're major chords minor chords add 9 chords sus 4 chords whatever as soon as you hear it you got to recognize the chord quality we'll talk about that today i'm going to start out with basic triad formulas okay now i have arranged this way major augmented minor diminished i always talk about the major minor than diminished and augmented now you don't use diminished and augmented chords that much but you will use them in things like solos and you will hear them in older songs things from the 70s things from the 80s from the 60s you'll hear diminished chord to your augmented chords very common then okay so the basic formula of a major chord is one three five okay one three five so we always refer to the major scale so if i take a c major scale here all the white notes right that's a c major scale so i take the first note the third note and fifth note of the scale now everything anything that i do to those notes to alter those notes the one three five we're always going to be relating to the one three five major triad or major scale okay so the major chord is one three five so this is one major third perfect fifth okay not important to know that the interval's really yet the next thing is the augmented chord one three sharp five so the only difference between major and augmented is that the fifth is raised by half steps so here's c major this is c augmented so the g the fifth moves to a sharp five anytime anybody talks about augmented they mean a sharp fifth okay now minor the formula is one flat three five okay just implies what it says you take the third of the major the e and move the e flat that is a minor chord so one flat three because i flatted the third from the major scale and then five okay now diminished i always think of diminishes relating to minor diminished is one flat three flat five okay so you take a minor chord there's c minor and i lower the fifth at g down a half step to g flat so c e flat g flat that is a diminished chord that is the formula for the diminished chord these formulas you memorize how do you memorize them you write them down and you repeat them a lot pretty much like you'd memorize anything in my book and in my ear training course it begins with how to build chords well it begins with intervals both do but the next thing is how to build chords and you start with how to build a triad okay so you learn to recognize it by sight and by sound right or by formula and by sound okay so what are the other type chords that you have the other type triads talk about these all the time we have the sus two okay the sus2 chord i'll put a little divider here is one two five that's the formula so you take a major triad and you move the three right third note of the scale down to the second of the scale so we say one two five that's a sus two chord you hear sus2 chords all the time right very very common you've seen it and you know you see dsus2 if you play guitar you see these chords all the time in chord charts right next chord is a sus4 equally is common a sus4 formula is one four five okay one four five okay this would be c sus4 why is it called suspended well because the third suspends up and your ear wants to hear it move down or if it's a sus2 your ear wants you to want that note to move up okay now there's two other triads that are very common that i call one is the lydian triad you won't find this in books except to be auto book okay one sharp four five okay once again let's say i take one four five c sus four one sharp four or five okay that would be a c lydian triad you think of it as like a sus sharp four okay and then we have the phrygian triad okay we'll talk about these modes in a minute one flat two five okay if we go one two five sus two and i flat the two move it down a half step one flat two five that would be a c phrygian triad okay now there are a couple other triads that that would you'd find in the major scale uh one of them would be the sus4 flat five the other one would be the uh uh the flat sus i'm sorry flat two flat five we're not gonna talk about those now those are not as common those are they they're common but they're not gonna be common for what we know because these are the basics these are all common these are commonly used these are things that you want to be able to hear if i turn off the keyboard at the bottom you want to be able to recognize these things by ear in the second chapter of my ear training course i believe is the second chapter is that the third chapter billy where triads i think is third chapter uh we drill triads just over and over and over and over you hear them you get practice round then you have the test rounds and it keeps track of your scores of your high score right you'll be played a series of chords and you know you'll be that's major that's diminished sus2 sus4 lydian you got to be able to hear these no they'll be all changing keys all the time but eventually once you hear them enough you'll start to recognize the interval combinations now you want to be able to recognize these harmonically meaning played as harmonies all together so you get that lo i don't need to know that is c c f sharp g right but i can hear those notes in the chord don't need to have perfect pitch to be able to hear those notes you just have to be able to uh learn to distinguish them and that comes from concentrated listening tell you an interesting thing here um a lot of the biggest mixing engineers that mix the most famous records historically have all been in their 50s and 60s even now you'll be like wait what nia some have been in their 40s but they're typically not really young people that whose hearing is theoretically diminished become great at doing this because their brain is able to recognize things uh eq anomalies if something has too much 1k if it has too much 4k if it has too much 150 hertz if it sounds you know woofy or something right palm muting for example this is from experience it's the same kind of ear training that you do to learn these things you just learn learn to recognize these sounds woofiness equals this um harshness equals 3k nasal equals 1k okay so these things are are commonly used and it's all part of developing a vocabulary of recognized sounds okay so these are the triads that you want to be able to know all right now the next thing that we want is to talk about is chord scale relationships okay so we're gonna we're gonna go back to the major scale here and we're going to ah don't you just love whiteboard things like actually being in class actually maybe you don't uh so the major scale major scale once again as i said is going to be 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. i'll put notes to the c d e f g a b now these are the notes of c major each scale degree has a chord related to it it always goes in the same pattern those of you that have watched this that have watched my live stream lectures on here before i harp on this stuff all the time why because it's great this is how you learn to figure out songs really quickly when i'm doing these top 10 spotify countdowns as soon as i hear the first chord if i identify it as a major chord there are only three major chords in a key so it's either the one four or five as soon as i hear the second chord i pretty much know what the other chords in the progression are going to be people are like oh rick is reviewing the songs beforehand no these things like never change key contemporary songs the place that ear training really comes in handy is when you're trying to figure out led zeppelin or the rolling stones or the beatles or xtc or you know any band other than you know and sound garden they have really complex chord progressions uh those are the things that you have to have especially good ears for right but contemporary pop music and contemporary metal the the the charts that i've gone through are simple they just are i hear the song one i start i start hearing okay i know what that is i know that doesn't have that okay and i can just predict what's gonna come next that's because i understand how chord progressions work okay so the one chord in a major key is always major so the one chord would be c major the two chord is minor the three chord is minor we use lower case roman numerals to indicate that uppercase roman numerals to indicate major chords okay these are all triads the circle here means diminished okay so the two chord in c major is d minor i use minus for minor that's a common thing e minor a minor and this is b diminished okay so we have c major d minor e minor f major g major a minor b diminished now here's an interesting thing many contemporary pop and rock songs use suspended chords okay as what i call constant structures so what i like to do is go through the major scale and talk about the uh the chords that are related to each scale degree plus their suspensions that are associated for example c major we're in the one chord of the key of c you can have c sus4 or c sus2 so i like to be able to have my students recognize what the alterations if i have a what for every scale degree every chord is built on every scale degree recognize what the two alterations are if you move the third of the chord up to the next scale note or the third of the chord down to the next scale note okay so the second chord in the key of c is d minor and this may sound like i'm going fast because i'm going fast but you can always rewind these videos and watch them over and over you can watch them at .75 speed and it'll sound like but the information moves slower okay it's all in my book did i actually tell you that i'm having a sale my may mega sale um you know i never put in my videos i never middle note the third up a step one scale step so it's c sus four or down a scale step to c sus two i move up to the next chord d minor d sus four d sus2 e minor e sus4 e phrygian we're going to talk about that why that's related to the mode that goes with the third chord f major the four chord f lydian okay one sharp four five f sus two g major g sus four g sus two a minor asus4 asus2 b diminished this would be um a sus4 uh flat five chord and this would be a a flat 2 flat 5 chord now the chord built on the seventh scale degree we don't need to talk about because we're talking about the basics today this is a little bit more complex typically don't have these chords associated with the locrian mode or the leading tone here but you do when we get to seventh chords we're going to get the dominant chords here okay so those different tri those different uh things we have the lydian triad here associated with the four chord we have the phrygian triad associated with the three chord that's because there are modes that go with each scale degree the mode that goes with the one chord is called ionian okay i'm going to write it like this because i can write sideways on it and that's how it is in my biato book i find that that when you have these things lined up they're very easy to memorize right so c ionian goes with a one chord dorian goes with the two chords would be d dorian right e phrygian g i n i always spell phrygian wrong i spelled it right there f lydian lydian is the mode that goes with the iv chord mixo-lydian goes with a v chord aeolian goes with the six chord and locrian goes with the seven chord okay so this the scales of c major the modes are c ionian d dorian e phrygian f lydian g mixolydian a aeolian and b locrian those are the seven modes of c major now we know the c major is all the white notes right so if i go c to c that's c ionian if i go d to d in a c major scale that gives me all the integral combinations of the d dorian mode e to e is e phrygian right it's got the flat two that's why i call it a phrygian triad one flat two five it's perfect fifth interval there's a fly two f to f is f lydian f lydian has a sharp four and five that's where your lydian triad comes from g to g is g mixolydian a to a in c major is a aeolian or a natural minor okay b to be is b uh locrian okay those are the seven modes of c major every major scale follows the exact same pattern ionian dorian phrygian lydian aioli and locrian you might want to make up a some type of uh thing with that billy do you have one or not that goes with that if anyone has one put it in the chat has a good what's that someone commented one i don't play loud music that much i don't play loud music at lunch that is awesome wow but i do play loud music i do play loud music at lunch um that's great i don't play loud music at lunch ionian dorian phrygian lydian mixolydian aeolian locrian okay the next way that you break these down that i like to talk about is to actually just group them okay major one chord four and five remember blues blues is the one four five well the major chords in a major key are the one chord the four chord and the five chord the minor chords are two three six two three six and the diminished chord is built on the seventh scale degree which has a diminished a little circle again means diminished okay now these are all the triads in the key of c major now there's also seventh chords if you add a seventh on each one of these triads so here's c major and then i add a seventh on here this would be c major seven if i take this shape and i move it up the major scale it gives me all the seventh chords you notice how all the spacing is the same okay so you got c major seven d minor seven e minor seven f major seven g m uh uh g7 g dominant seven a minor seven b minor seven flat five or b half diminished and then back to c major seven okay it should be easy to visualize with the keyboard on the screen there all right now all i need to do is do this go like this c major seven d minor seven e minor seven f major seven g seven a minor seven and then this last one you'd go like this for half diminished but i like to write b minor seven flat five so i put a minus seven and a flat five okay now these corresponding roman numerals would change it's two just know that you write these things on there like g7 would be that minor seven half diminished major stuff i can't help myself i'm a completist um i'm a completer it's it's obsessive-compulsive behavior i know but really bothers me there okay these are the seventh chords in the key of c seventh chords always follow the same pattern two but it's a little bit different here this uh to group them you have to group them a little differently you know what i learned this in my first guitar lesson ever with tom rizzo back in the 70s he taught me these things he taught me the triads and seventh chords in every major key and i re i have the book actually and he just put squares around him and i can't still teach i teach it the same way thank you tom tom's a great guitar player tom must be tom's probably tom's probably only about 10 years older than me or so okay so um major seventh chords are found on the one and four scale degrees right one major seven four major seven c major seven f major seven minor seventh chords are found on the two three and six just like minor chords scale degrees now we have the dominant seven right the old g7 in this case dominant seventh is found on the five okay and then minor seven flat five is found on the seventh scale degree seven minor seven flat five right i mean that minor i don't even need that minus because it's the seven is minor minor seven flat five okay so these are the seventh chords in every major key when i'm listening to bruno mars's new song what was the song called anybody know that song leave the door open leave the door open thank you billy leave the door open so anytime you have r b or soul or neo soul they typically will use seventh chords okay and these seventh chords are these kind of chords that come from the major scale that's it now in the bruno mars song they have some uh chords that that modulate and they have some chords like for example they'll have um uh this chord they have actually i think they have i think this start f major then they go to that is that right billy sounds right and then um where does it go after that i'm trying to think i can't remember but uh it does that and that has the g uh has a f f over g that's another common chord these are chords that would be a g 11 chord or g uh 9 11 chord g sus 9 11. so um f over g is what we call it these are chords still from the major scale that's why you need to know these seventh chords if you're going to play earth wind and fire bruno mars anything that's derivative of 70 soul music or neo soul fun any funk music anything you have to know seventh chords um i was listening to um uh fantasy by earth wind and fire i'm gonna do what makes the sound great i think on that song and and the guitar part it's all seventh chords and it's all diatonic seventh chord but it and that's not all diatonic seven two it changed key all over the place it's amazing there's so many chord changes in that song it's so great but the guitar player what's cool is that you got strings and horns on there but the guitar is leading the charge with all the hip chord voicings the guitars you don't even notice it until when i solo the tracks traction here you'd be like oh my god the guitar part is everything in the song it's awesome and it's using all these kind of seventh chords like this okay once again these formulas are in my book i hate to keep harping on it but this is my only chance this week discount code rb do that um okay so these are seventh chords related to major keys very important screenshot the stuff if you have to but the way to learn it is to actually just sit and write it and write it and write it and write it and write it and write it because that's how i learned it i learned it i learn i relearn it every time i teach this right i'm doing i'm relearning it again now i'm reinforcing those patterns in the brain okay okay so next uh i want to talk about um minor scale chords okay i'm gonna talk about a minor so you have a few different types of minor you have natural minor you have uh melodic minor you have harmonic minor okay natural minor is the probably the most common with the raised fifth scale degree so if you take a minor key of a minor if you take all the chords from c major and you start on the sixth chord a minor well these are all the same chords and that becomes the one chord the that's how the chords work right that's why it's called the relative minor because it's related to the parent or the relative major so it's going to be all the same chords so this that what would have been the sixth chord in major a minor that becomes the one the b diminished becomes the two the c major becomes three d minor becomes four a minor becomes five so on and so forth right so the chords in a minor would be uh one minor two is diminished three is major four is minor five is minor but many times we change it to major put that in parenthesis uh six is major i'm looking for a capital roman numeral and seven is major but this is actually flat six and flat seven and i like to put flat three here i'll tell you why i do that so there's no confusion that's how you learned it patrick right so that there's no confusion so i go a minor is the one chord b diminished is the two chord c major is the three chord uh d minor is the four chord e minor is a v chord many times it's e major right if it's melodic or harmonic minor um then f major and g major okay now if i have a chord progression like um you've heard that a billion times okay that's the end of stairway to heaven that jimmy page soul is over that's really you could say okay well that could be six five four in the key of c but stereo heaven starts on a minor so it's in a minor right so that's really one to the seven flat seven to the flat six okay so this is uh these are all the chords of c major you think of it like a tape loop okay now what modes go with these the same modes as in major they're just shifted around aeolian is the one mode a only the other name for aeolian is natural minor okay so this is the natural these are the chords from a natural minor the two chord is locrian right then we're uh then we're to ionian we're to dorian we're the phrygian lydian and mixolydian okay the modes work the same way if you're an a minor or c major it's the same mode you just start in a different place okay this is how these things are related where it gets tricky is when you get to melodic minor and harmonic minor so let's talk about the formulas for these actually let me talk about the formula for a minor i say one two flat three four five flat six flat seven okay sorry that i crowded it there it's all in my book um so that's the formula for the a minor scale natural minor now we also have the a melodic minor scale this is going to produce completely different chords okay this is a little bit more complex these aren't really the basics these are these are a little bit more than the basics a melodic minor and i'm not going to get into this because this is going to be for future for the next master class we're going to get into this stuff a melodic minor in a harmonic minor i want to show you what the uh what the formulas are for these melodic minor one two flat three four five six seven harmonic minor one two flat three four five flat six whoops flat six seven okay now now um if i take a c major scale [Music] to make it a c melodic minor i simply flat the third the third note of the scale normally would be e but i change it to e flat because of that you get a whole different series of chords right so it starts with c minor then it goes to d minor and then it goes to e flat augmented now it's not important yet to talk about what chords are in here i just want to talk about the formulas so when people say minor you need to say well what kind of minor is it natural minor is it melodic or harmonic melodic is pretty much for jazz music most people use it although stevie wonder writes songs in melodic minor he's one of the few people that does because stevie wonder is awesome okay harmonic minor in harmonic minor you have if you're into metal if you're in a neoclassical metal if you like ingva if you like any any of the give me some guitar players that are neoclassic people that use harmonic minor billy all of them yeah marty marty friedman paul gilbert uh yeah i'm sure they all all neo metal neoclassical metal players use the harmonic minor okay the harmonic minor differs when you hear this one two flat three four five flat six major seven this interval is called an augmented second now the augmented second interval is what gives the scale its sound okay [Music] and because of that you have another whole series of chords that go along with this um all these things are in my ear training course discount code rb 700 and my biato book bundle my 700 page pdf i drill all this stuff okay over and over and over and over so that you hear this stuff so when you hear a song you're like i know what that is i know what that is it doesn't matter what the tuning is it doesn't matter if it's metal if it's pop if it's r b if it's jazz if it's rock if it's indie rock doesn't matter they use all the same vocabulary you just have to learn the only things that get tough are when you have weird tunings on the guitars if it's joni mitchell or it's a swerve driver and you have some alternate tunings you're like okay i can kind of hear what kind of chords those are but i have to figure out what the tuning is first that's the tricky thing but once again that is uh something that you develop there's a song called daughter by pearl jam that's off their third second record verses and at the very beginning stone gasser whoever's playing the rhythm i assume that's him he strums all the chords open and it's an open g tuning this is how i knew how to learn how to play the song because he quick he just picks for each note on it he's like oh okay or uh she talks to angels by um by uh counting black black crows counting i'm thinking county girls black rose the black crows uh that's an e major open tuning that's the only way you can get those chord voicings we can get them another way to get them to sound like that is be able to figure that out by ear once again when i hear that stuff i instantly recognize oh that's an alternate tuning because i hear the sound of how the strings react it's just you know or if it's keith richards i know what an open g tuning is i know what an open c tuning sounds like if it's joni mitchell i know what what what dadgad sounds like i know what drop d sounds like if i'm playing tool if i'm playing sound garden if i'm playing allison chains i know those drop tunings i know what they sound like i know the kind of chords that can be produced by those knowing theory informs you to all these things as soon as i hear the first chord in um black hole sun i know i'm like okay that chord is a sus chord all right and the only way that that chord the logical way to play it is if you're in drop d that's the only way so by knowing theory i know the sound of that chord or the chord right before the uh or before the end of the progression when it goes to e flat sus i'm like okay the that chord can only be played that's not even on the guitar it's not in standard tuning that low e flat right so it's like okay it's obviously drop d then you hear the d the open d and you're like okay i got this definitely drop d okay once again ear training it's a vocabulary of recognized sounds all right billy did you say something you got a question um maybe it's time for questions okay what do you got um okay questions let's see rossi composing i've learned a lot of theory from you rick but still struggle to write as i can't relate music slash chords to a style or rhythm any suggestions um relating theory to a style wait as i as i can't relate this the music chords to a style rhythm any suggestions well it really depends on what kind of music you are writing okay because everything every type of music uses a different vocabulary a different harmonic vocabulary different rhythmic vocabulary uh when it comes to harmony because we're talking about harmony here the understanding the diatonic chords understanding the secondary chords and the and the mediant chords that are related to the key is really important okay this is where you know you know when i was one of the things i asked joni mitchell when i uh when i met her for dinner was do you write did you always write the music first and she said yes and every songwriter that i've ever met other than elton john elton john got his lyrics from bernie topping i met elton john at a studio here in 2004 and i met him and benny billy and bernie toppin and bernie finishes the lyrics and hands them to elton and elton creates the music now that is very foreign to me he's the only person i know of that really does that i think out of all the beatles songs from what i've read across the universe was the only song that john lennon actually had the um had the lyrics first on and then came up with the rhythm but joanie told me she would come up with the syllables first which is really like most people do they come up with syllables and then they find the right kind of their diphthongs and things like that to come up with the the with the lyrics that go along with them that sound like the melody that they're singing so you know this is how uh you know to use theory if i say okay i wanna use these chords you know i'm gonna write a song with one four five and six or four one six five something like that or i wanna i wanna break out of that i wanna try something different what's a chord i can use i'll use a major three chord or i use a secondary dominant chord something like that so that's that's a way to do this this is why it's important to memorize this stuff okay um thomas b says i keep finding these weird chords in guitar flying blind although i can be slow sometimes i worry if i learn too much will i lose an element of creativity is there any truth in that no there's no truth in that i'll give you a great example beethoven bach mozart and every jazz musician every rock i mean most people that are pros know what they're doing they know what all the chords are stephen tyler chris cornell they knew exactly what they were playing not everybody does but most of the pro musicians do they just do you know they know what chords go together and uh and if you learn things like john williams when he's writing themes to things he he's writing the full orchestration out i don't know anyone more creative than john williams i mean forget about the major themes of the thing all the incidental music for the hundreds hundred films you scored or however many it's insane it's mind-boggling a score for a major motion picture is 800 pages long a two-hour music score orchestral score people that know things that know music that know how to orchestrate for a full orchestra that are incredibly creative whether it's hans zimmer or bernard herrmann thomas newman james newton-howard john williams they're all unbelievably creative people and they know all this stuff and if they don't know they hire an orchestrator that knows it okay so has nothing to do creativity the most creative people know this stuff jacob collier whoever it is they know this so no the answer is no learning stuff does not make you less creative it makes you more creative because when you recognize things you can learn more things when i hear anything i know what it is so does that make me more or less creative no it makes me more creative because i can think of a million things to do and kind of make them my own based on things that i've heard i know what that is so oh i can use that but i'll change it and do this right but if i have to sit there and hunt around blindly to figure out okay what what is this note and and i have to sound it out on the guitar or whatever and it takes me five minutes to find each note well how am i going to be creative by doing that if i know boom that's a major chord that's a lydian chord i know what to do with those things i like the sound of that take that linear chord and maybe i'll put that note in the base or maybe i'll go to that you know these are that it's a good question though it's actually a very very common question um harsh uh i can't see your last name can you tell us more in detail about bi-tonal chords how to compose with them i hope my question reaches you big fan uh by tonal quartz bitonal chords are really not things for this particular uh uh master class here but by total chords would be those would be bi-tonal chords [Music] okay so there'd be triads over bass notes we call them bi-tonal chords but they come from different scales outside the major scale not all of them the first chord i played this chord [Music] it could be c phrygian that chord [Music] it's actually beautiful right but once you start getting into this chord that comes from a different key that comes from different key that's g diamond diminished uh that that actually is from phrygian so on and so forth so these bi-tonal chords sometimes come from major keys sometimes they come from distant keys or distance scales the diminished scale the augmented scale they could come from they come from yeah um the lydian augmented scale uh they they will come from modes they usually will come from modes of either the major scale melodic or harmonic minor okay great question though um marissa says how do you figure out songs by ear from the radio uh same way that that uh that i'm talking about i usually will listen for the bass motion i will i will recognize the chords instantly because of ear training i'm going to say rb 700 about ear training is that it's evergreen it never changes it's been the same this is western music theory but you can if robbie shankar when if you watch him talk about ragas he talks about them in relation to scales he talks about dough he talks about movable dough things like that he knows eastern and western he would he can actually relate it to to west there's a great video on youtube he was a genius sitar player um so these things that you learn are there for life they inform you with everything that you hear and also um they really spur your creativity the more that you learn the more possibilities you have to uh to experiment with things um a lot of people i'll just say this here in my closing a lot of people want me to trash the these top when i listen when i do these spotify playlists people want me to trash the music and i don't trash the music i try to look for positive things in there because it's it's music of our time and of kids time and if it wasn't popular yes of course these things are paid for uh in some ways or they used to be paid for the chart position and stuff like that but now pretty much whatever gets the most streams rises to the top it's in spotify or apple music's best interest to do that so they whatever gets the most streams does the most um led zeppelin was the biggest earner on spotify last year from what i've heard i'm not sure i need to verify that but i was told by somebody that that's the case which is pretty unbelievable right um so i try to look for positive things if you trash people's music kids of today they don't listen to you so um uh the the better way is to try to teach people other possibilities when i hear the bruno mars song i'm going to cheer it on even if it's derivative of earth wind and fire or many of the things that came out in the 70s great i want more people to be derivative of stuff that came out in the 70s it would be amazing right so you guys are great thank you so much the next master class will
