Muddy Pond Mennonites Appalachia & Cumberland Mtn. General Store Along The Cumberland Plateau!

well we found us a general store yes done I love looking at these old songs here there's stuff for sale here look at these Outdoors stove that we didn't use to heat this right now you feel it oh you can taste that let's see what you get what do you got come on man it's good is that good awesome Muddy Pond Variety Store okay I'm here with Doreen how are you oh I'm doing fine all right good thank you and she was just telling me about how the family got started here yeah yeah so uh actually the stores here in Muddy Pond kind of came to be because of the Sorghum making I remember these growing up I mean I know in the sixth grade that's why I got wore out you got school a lot oh yeah a troublemaker I'll tell you something we are cruising through the back roads very gently and um just seeing what these back roads had to offer here East Tennessee and Cumberland plateau beautiful country you ever get a chance to visit so we're just going to see what's out through here and pull over when we get a chance if we find a general story not how much we love General Stores so yeah we both just love getting out like this in the countryside with rural areas and backwards areas and just heading down the road and like Mike says seeing what kinds of neat places we've never been to before we could have an adventure at and some General Stores or some really neat little places to stop and bring let's check this out homemade fudge step back in time Cumberland all right here look at this look at that [Applause] little decorations but see the buildings back here and how it just goes all the way around there the cat up here yep killmores Cafe look at Santa and Mrs Claus they're serious aren't they let's walk right over here antiques there's the Ten Commandments Triple H feed [Applause] oh look at all these old things here [Applause] done [Applause] a little fire hydrant up here I love looking at these old Sounds here there's stuff for sale here Cowboys leave your guns at the bar Mayfield no smoking all right look at these side doors that is cool isn't it John Deere Wakefield these little handles let's go over here look at this piece of bottles 28.95 there's a name for that of this mint green color yeah I can't remember what it is you know it starts with a P or something pepper shakes are pretty neat or anything yeah I've got from my grandmother Clarkston and cups are similar to that okay thank you hmm it is California yeah more old stuff is that coke stuff over there the checkers stone that we didn't use to heat this right now you feel it [Music] look at there that thing is huge look at that bottle Thunder Rose [Music] we do have a pumpkin pie milkshake do they you gonna get you one you better go come on let's go you don't ever go get there's a menu [Music] world's famous Banana Split yeah down here oh it's me yeah [Music] I think they have the Elvis shake up there six bucks I don't know banana butterscotch peanut butter so what do you think you're gonna get all right maybe I should try pumpkin pie milkshake because I'm a child with the peanut butter one yeah then we'll show you the rest of this little general store with the cafe in the back how cool yeah that is so neat you see some of those sounds yeah all right I can't wait to see how good this shake is yeah look at all this stuff oh you can taste that let's see what you get what do you got come on now it's good is that good awesome Merry Christmas kind of just an idea of everything in here you have T-shirts wow look at all these old bottles wow thank you lots of antiques yeah a lot of neat stuff yeah we were hungry we would have eaten yes but so is it pretty good yeah how's it compared to like Pals peanut butter the starters did his house but our hobnob yeah but it's dead she said they make their own peanut butter sauce to make them with okay so we better head on down the road curious to see what the big boy's been there he is [Applause] you ready to go huh you ready to go [Music] okay so we're leaving the Cumberland Mountain General Store here and um I think just on down the road a little ways but I think there's a minute store down here it would be really nice to stop in at so we're going to go and see if that's open look at the horses up here pretty well it's pretty country out in here it is thank you so we're back in the midnight area here in the heels look at this cows are down it's driving around beautiful country wow we're getting ready to cross the creek okay look at that that is pretty feel that way isn't it pretty [Music] good look at there that beautiful you get that pollen yeah it's like already Pond sorghum meal [Music] there's Maddie Palm variety so we're gonna check that out hang on [Music] sorghum Muddy Pond Variety Store foreign Tes go in see what they've got you want to get some farming stuff out here pretty neat and we're kind of out in the country here Adirondacks Variety Store now these this peanut butter veg is sugar free it is isn't it yeah a lot of people like these um strawberry butter that looks that looks good pumpkin you can see the names below it there look at that best mom ever pickled sweet tiny beets hmm just a little Christmas holiday jam oh look at that about all these and these are Jake and Amos okay you can see their little logo that's pretty cool isn't it oh it is you see these cookbooks oh you did more books and some things oh what'd you find over here let's just stick around foreign seasoning and here's a yellow popcorn not popcorn and look at the little lady finger popcorn so much smaller soup starters this is chunky potatoes sweet onion powder ground mustard smoked paprika pretty neat look at there [Music] he still spins so here's some bike things seven sorghum pound cake peanut brittle that looks good ah Fried Pies two dollars each apple peach coconut and raspberry okay definitely gonna take one of those okay I'm here with Doreen how are you oh I'm doing fine all right good thank you and she was just telling me about how the family got started here yeah so uh actually the stores here in Muddy Pond kind of came to be because of the Sorghum making and the the community made sorghum started back in the mid 60s and our family branched off in about 1980 something like that because and so because there were so many tourists coming to buy sorghum and I think and then there had been a little general store before that and it closed so so I think the general store down the road opened up about about that time they closed and so all these stores and leather shops have popped up because of this sort of making because so many tourists came to buy sorghum and so it just has worked out great to have this what is the difference between molasses and Southern is it okay there's a difference sorghum syrup it comes from the Sorghum cane okay and and sorghum cane is a perennial it grows every year you have to it's no sorry take that back it's not a perennial it's an annual you can come backwards sugar cane is a millennial sorghum King is an annual so you can plant the seed every year in order to to grow it it doesn't grow in I mean through the winter it freezes the can freeze but now um some people call it the old timers would call it molasses okay the Sorghum Association prefers us to teach people to call it sorghum syrup because it's sweet as opposed to black strap Blackstrap is a byproduct of making sugar mm-hmm so it's not usually sweet so you'll make fresh bread here pies and other things we got an apple pie here where do you do all the cooking at well actually the how my mother-in-law's house she's passed on now but her house is here and she has a wood burning stove and so we baked bread and rolls in there and well she also has gas ovens too okay which we bake quite a bit of the bread into but yeah we bake it in the house over here luck the hats behind you there yeah those are Amish Amish hats yeah well thanks for sharing with us all
