[Music] Nick and his team have put a lot of time into this beautiful 1970 Cuda with a 446 Barrel today he's dropping the hammer [Music] [Music] Nick's garage is supported by Atlas equipment and K tool International hi I'm Nick and welcome to my shop all right I'm working on Dan's Kowalski Challenger I've got his short block ready here we installed new Pistons rebalance the crank all the mobile new bearings and now I'm working on the cylinder heads I've taken them apart and I know that he's got all new valves all new valve springs but my question is I want to do something further than that I want to grind all these valve guides put in Vikings heels not The Umbrellas that come from the factory which we no longer use these anymore we use Vita seals so I've taken those out it's got all new valves right here okay so that's a good start but my concern is when you do a valve job you should always replace the core plugs I removed them on nuts on the head which are right here and then I want to show you it's just a simple job here let's do this here we go all you got to do is bang it out like so and you get a magnet [Music] pull it out then we're going to get a screwdriver [Music] if I see there you go watch this and there you go you know they Rush from the inside you know it's nice to get brass core plugs when you can find them and then again sometimes what I do is when I put if I don't have brass core plugs what I do is I quote them up with a shellac and then put them on like I do on a lot of core packs when they're not brass this is a very important thing because if a core plug starts to leak on the end of the cylinder head then it is a firewalls here you know how hard it is to replace that core plug it's it's very difficult and it's uh it's on how to work best thing to do is remove the cylinder head get it pulled out put in your core plug and then put it back in the car it's a lot of work so what I do here is I start from scratch and I knock them out now if they've been replaced by somebody it doesn't matter I do this take our screwdriver I got an old screwdriver that I use as a fly bar like so and then I take them off so I do this on every cylinder head that I work with you know if everybody surrounded why I'm using screwdriver this is an old screwdriver I just use it for a desktop work anyways very so and I never leave him in place I know some people do but I don't there you go yeah what's up people you know sometimes they knock out the core plugs and they just leave them in the block and in my case I do not do that so I always replace them when I do an engine block so anyways there's one there's two in the front wonderful on the back and two on the side some so it has to have no core plugs at all but in this case we do so we get them replaced and another thing let's go back to what I've always said you know this engine was assembled it was dropped in the cars to be shipped here which came in from California if you guys take a good look there's a lot of silicone and we'll bike the same the gasket makes the seal well it doesn't matter we're going to take it all apart which we did and then we're going to clean them we're going to start from scratch you know I want to do some Bowl blending and then I got to work on this engine to work but here's another funny thing and I want this engine to work on 91 octane which they have in the area of San Francisco look at this cylinder head this one has been polished roughly and there's the other one that came with the engine same engine [Applause] this one here is not tampered with look all original they did a valve job but no but nobody see this one is kind of polished and this one is not so I'm going to do the same with this little head so that could be equal so that's a simple job you know it's part of engine building you know what I'm going to trick them off guys I'm gonna have to grind down the valves this is something you know I do all the time when I do a valve job you know you got to make sure the head is clean make sure the oil passes which feeds the oil which is right here these two holes there it depends on if you're pulling the left-hand side of the right hand side that defeat oil to the locker shaft you know when you have a cylinder head that's been on an engine for many many years and you'll always want is working to feed the oil from the Block to the cylinder head and always working the other one is dead it's blocked off because of the cam bearing on the other side number two where it's on the opposite end does it work so if you build this engine then you put accident to the other head on the opposite side there's a very very good chance that that oil line could be blocked and you know what you do a valve job or when you clean the cell Nets you want to make sure when you blast it with the engine shaft when you clean them good that you pass air through every hole and especially on this one and this one and you want to make sure that they come out that the air pressure comes on both ends right here on the bolt where the shaft feeds the oil to the Walker shaft so there's if you look in here there's a passage from where the oil line is so you got to make sure when you wash that head so this way when they're both open they're both clean then if you switch the head any side you want you're guaranteed it's going to work when you prime the engine and speaking of this I have another set of certainly hits the bunk to a 426 semi that came in from Toronto here let me just move these on the side you know since we're on the subject on cylinder heads right here this is the one that had the exhaust valve that came out so I stripped the cylinder heads I took out the valves and I want to show you that that valve bounced around and went to all different cylinders so my job is here see this is all being tampered with I mean hammered with evolve bouncing around missing going up and down crushing that valve between the chamber and the Piston so what I got to do here is I want to Smooth Up The Chamber but before I do that I want to send them out to a machine shop that's going to have a magnaflux that make sure that these Chambers also heads do not have any cracks because if they do have any cracks then we're going to have coolant leak inside the cylinder but before I do any cleanup and evolve job you gotta make sure your magnaflex it and make sure they don't leak or have any cracks because after all you know these sets went through severe damage damages with so many uh dents on it especially this one here this is the one that dropped the valve this is that 420 is a Chevy that dropped the exhaust valve and of course we never found the head of the valve because you know it probably went from one single to another through the intake manifold many people are asking where did it go they eventually got so small they went out through an exhaust valve and another cylinder and out through the muffler but in the meantime this is what I have this is a mess I got to clean up so right now I've got two set of cylinder heads I got to work on and you know this is a very important part this is where the power comes in and you know you want to make a good seal with the valves and the valve job and there you have it it is all about valve jobs cleaning the work and of course make sure there's no leaks and of course always put new core plugs okay so now that we're done with the cylinder heads now let's go work on a Cuda with a carburetor problem that we used to have and let's see how it goes [Music] foreign [Music] so here we are with Matt Cuda from British Columbia so we just let the carburetors return back from dawn Oak from Cortez Ontario you know I had the engine built it ran okay for a few days after we installed it in the car but somehow for some time when I had a running a few days on and off every day with a issue with the car beaters and I wasn't happy with them you know with backfiring idle it would run very rich saw the carburetor sent out to Don and he had to move a halt for me and also detailed them so now I just got them back I've installed them on the car and of course they're not so rich before that I had to replace those spark plugs I'm going to show you when you talk about a rich spark plug they become black and when they become black the car has a misfire backfiring through the car beaters or whatever come and see and here we have them so I had them replaced and now I'm just about to get it started because you know I had the carburetors installed then I said you know what now that I got the carburetors and the shooting run no more rich like it used to before let me start with a new set of plugs so we got them on and uh I hope we have enough fuel in the tank I want to get it started just to see how it audience so let's warm it up what I want to see if it doesn't back for anymore I had it running for a few minutes I want to make sure the fuel came up to the carburetors had no external leaks and again I'm going to check it again so let's get it running check for a few leaks and warm it up at the same time I'll give it a shot of gas give the cars in park let me just turn the key and here we go this is the one that had a rocker noisy so we got rid of that noise and now let's work on the carburetors I want to check for a few leaks that's one thing you don't want is a fuel leak on a six-pack or any other engine but a six pack there's so many fittings so many fish that it can leak fuel that you gotta double check every one of them I'm gonna let it warm up I want to make sure there's no leak and then we'll take it for a drive but in the meantime I need to warm it up and I want to see what I've just warmed up but it doesn't like for an idle anymore which was my issue before so let's give it a few minutes [Music] you know the things that was an awesome shot of you guys you know you know when a kingdom comes in and sticks back what was up he's got a deadly throw when you're driving it just keeps you back on the seat and you know of all engines of power you know if you go back in history one of the most deadliest powerful engine on the street it was before 46 Barrel six spots and you got to give credit price on this motor you know there were hemis there were buses there was all a six but this engine always gave it a good run let me tell you and this car of course every Cuda or every Hemi food I should say every Hemi Coulda came with the Shaker one on a six-pack was an option and of course this one here the Shaker was on it when the car came here and then we have to install the hood pins for Matt so Matthew wanted Hood pins so we got them installed we also had the rear bumper replaced and painted we have the front bumper repair the header panel repair the hood panel painted we also have the engine bay painted when the engine was out so we did put a bit of things on this one of course we overhaul the engine and of course and now I want to take it for a device but the most important thing is I want to see how these carburetors are going to work after all this you know you could build a beautiful engine a good engine but if the carbs are not tuned you're not going to go anywhere with it I installed 180 degrees Fahrenheit thermostats and all my engine builds which is great which is good so uh let's see how it goes yeah so far no backfires that was good so far I was playing with air fuel ratio much earlier but I think we had it pretty good because you know when you want to adjust air fuel mixture you've got to make sure that the carburetors will actually say that the engine is at their operating temperature so it should be okay but right now what I need to do take it for a drive if I see if it doesn't back for an idle I'm ready for a road test the engine color Hemi orange is actually the same color as the car so some might some people might think you know an orange engine orange car but that's not the case this color was available as a high impact color for price and Back in 1970 and also all have all High Performance Engine came hit me on it like so it's just a coincidence that it's orange and orange you're going to backfires at idle so I think I'm ready for a road test so we're gonna take it for a small Drive and if you viewers want to tag along let's go for a ride hope your viewers don't mind we're going for a drive we gotta try it out it's got those high pitch High peach or so there's a high pitch Mufflers on it it's got a collecting noise in the back [Music] [Music] you want to make sure it opens up when we uh Go full throttle here we go just like an easy Drive okay it's all good [Music] okay I believe the fish bar opened up there okay let's try it again no backfires there that's good news [Music] here we go you know you want to make sure the kick down works and that's about opening up all at the same time so I'm gonna just try it one more time and here we go we interrupt this episode for a delicious announcement from Nick all right I'm here with Phil from ID Foods hey George from patta 2000 and they've got a secret sauce coming out on the market and you guys want to tell me about it uh yeah uh we have the potato sauce which Nick has been talking about and raving about over the years um we're merging with ID food I'm sure everybody's got something from ID food in the pantry shop right now like fill up some of your products well one of the products is haiku which is on the sign what else behind it yeah uh Haiku Asian products uh the interesting thing about the sign is we've been neighbors for 35 years side by side with uh petat Dunedin so it's great to uh partner with them on a patag DeMille poutine sauce some of our other products that would be a go-go squeeze and my mustard and Mallard products and uh the great gentleman ginger beer oh wow that pasta is del Verde so I'm pretty sure so many people already have some of these uh items in your uh in your pants yourself already and very soon you're going to be able to go into most grocery stores in Quebec and Ontario we're going to start with that and pick up the potato sauce and in about two minutes you're gonna be able to make it in the the comfort of your own home the packaging and the Putin sauce is going to be the facade of potato mill uh with cars all around it so it's basically uh showing your car show yeah exactly that's what let's just look today because we're pretty famous for our cartels as well we've been doing car shows here for the past 12 years so uh we put the two together the potions that everybody has when they come here along with our car shows and this is where we're going to beat the big thing on our on our Putin sauce packaging in the supermarkets when we hope to have it for the uh for the fall we're developing the uh a special all-natural uh poutine sauce right now yeah and the uh thing that makes it uh one of well I think it's de meal that makes it unique because uh do need was just voted last year the best uh fast foods in Quebec and we're hoping to win again this year yep it's up to use people up there to go vote for us uh and yes we have our very special blend of uh potion sauce um and what we're working on right now is we're trying to make it as healthy as possible that's good for um for the consumer out there so you're going to be able to eat a Putin and you're gonna feel less guilty about having uh cheated it's gonna be uh you know you're gonna feel good about it and there we have it you guys made in Quebec home of the Putin and George thank you guys and let's put it back out of the market let's go let's go so keep your eyes peeled for the most delicious sauce since sliced potatoes George's Secret Recipe sauce and now back to the Cuda it's a good thing everybody's on vacation most of the places are closed there today so summer holidays thank you okay let's see how it takes off we gotta try one more time all right that's their Spike opened up all right open up a little bit late so maybe it just needs a bit of lighter springs to open up sooner boy does it kick in boy you feel that when the six pack opens up or should I say six about because we're running it in Plymouth let me try one more time yeah that takes about kicks in man it's uh it's a heavy kick down here we go [Music] [Applause] it's good yeah I'm sure that's his problems up I'm sure it does your boys says six bucks I said six pack it's one carpeter Hayes origin original Vancouver wait [Music] but they don't mind Nick ripping up and down and the way he drives they get plenty of business from it too [Applause] [Music] Matthew I'm sure your car was not driven like this before enemy tell you it's a totally different monster [Music] so I guess Don did a great job no more backfires six pack opens up or should I say six barrel we're gonna check out our combo we're going to make sure and I'm sure it does and you know what I just I love the way it uh performs okay I'll just go down the street I'll be right back foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I have to show it off a bit and you know what I love the way it performs I think we're good okay let's pack it up I love the way it performs and I think we're done so right now I'm just going to finish up a couple of things like a name plate on the dash pad the penta starter goes on the fender and after that I put the Shaker back on and I can't ask for anything more and this car just performs awesome so let's bring it back into the shop [Music] [Music] [Music] what more can you ask for this is a 446 bottle
