[Music] Monarch Legacy of monsters versus Godzilla minus one two visions of the Kaiju genre t23 is a great year to be a big CGI monster fan between the announcement of Godzilla X Kong the release of Monarch Legacy of monsters on Apple TV plus and the theatrical release of Godzilla minus one were blessed however comparing Monarch and minus one is inevitable even though one is a US TV show with a substantial budget and the other is a Japanese movie with less than $15 million you'll see that the winner may not be who you expect Godzilla minus one offers more than expected Shin Godzilla brought us the Ultimate Godzilla movie or so we thought Godzilla minus one takes it even further still with a shoestring budget Godzilla is still looking daunting with spikes all over its body a terrifying yet cool look with more Mobility than the inevitable Shin Godzilla it allows for more spectacular scenes of Destruction which put Godzilla VIIs Kong to shame moreover the human characters turn out to be actually interesting this time around no diversity quota no mandatory flat felling jokes just a drama with convincing performances and strong character development from the main character to the secondary roles you actually want to see them survive the catastrophe as we first thought when seeing the original reveal it's deeply intertwined with the trauma of Japan losing the war and the nuclear bomb effects the movie has a message but unlike most modern Productions it's subtle about it and provides more than a manakan vision of the world Monarch Legacy of monsters still has the human character problem Monarch Legacy of monsters promised to explore the Inception of the Monarch agency and how they found the first Titans it was supposed to expand on the universe and and fill in the gaps of a Cinematic Universe built in a hurry at the time of writing there are only five episodes out so we're willing to give it the benefit of the doubt however what we've seen so far isn't convincing with a TV show you'd expect well-rounded characters but they're all modern culture cliches even the 1940s Japanese doctor stands up to military generals because patriarchy I guess Kurt Russell being Jack Burton he carries every scene he's in but the rest of the cast including his son are not up to the part it's all an empty shell and nothing gets you into it the CGI is high quality for a show but it's not enough to get you through this snoozefest we can't even tell you the actors or characters names to us they go by irritating American Girl fragile Japanese boy and diverse LGBT hacker girl you can like both but one is clearly Superior of course it's only our opinion and you may have enjoyed Monarch we only loved seeing Kurt Russell and having convincing CGI monsters but it didn't impact us like minus one which one did you prefer do you still have hope that Monarch will pick up the pace let us know in the comments
