home in mckinney texas four bedrooms three full bathrooms two stories two living areas two-car garage great neighborhood great schools i think because of covid we learned very quickly that we lived in three rooms in our house her bedroom my bedroom four rooms the bathroom in the kitchen that was kind of where we hung out between covid and then when the snowstorm hit in dallas we really realized we didn't even utilize the majority of our house i felt very fortunate with how i was able to sell my house in dallas that i decided to take the extra income that we made and do something for her just because she was having a little bit of anxiety about her future and and where was she going to live and what was she going to do and so i just wanted to be able to do something for her that gave her some peace of mind that she would always have some place to live and we chose a tiny house on wheels just so that if she ever wanted to move it she could we did have a condition with building the tiny house um that when she does have a career finally that she's going to have to pay me back because i used the money it's part of my retirement but i i mean as a mom i i was able to do this for her and as a single mom i was able to do this for her that not many people can say that [Music] we are parked here at island cove in durango colorado and we've been here about six weeks we moved here from mckinney texas because we wanted a simpler lifestyle [Music] so our house is 24 feet we have metal siding on it vertical and horizontal and then obviously metal skirting metal roof our windows are white they're from lowes and they're high altitude windows the high altitude windows are important because there's an extra tubing in the window that keeps the windows from having condensation and from sweating and also from cracking come on in and take a look welcome to our tiny house our house was designed by indigo river tiny homes um peter is amazing it's approximately 288 square feet upstairs and downstairs there were some key features that tilly really wanted in the house and i think the three big things were that she could walk in the loft that she had a full-size bathtub and a washer dryer and we got a lot of features in 24 feet over here is where the built-in couch will be but our cushions are delayed because of coved the great thing about the couch is that it will make into a full-size bed there's a platform on hinges underneath here that there's a handle in the back that will actually pull out and set on these two storage boxes and so the cushions will actually make into a bed we thought that was a good feature to have if she has guests and of course where i will be staying since the house is tillies we felt again storage was super important and so we do have these two gigantic storage boxes but when the cushions are on it'll just look like a u-shaped couch we love the faux shiplap wall as we all know shiplap is pretty expensive and i wanted the look of shiplap but i didn't want the cost to ship laps so we actually made this wall for like 75 dollars which was super easy where you just put a piece up and then put a spacer in it and then put the next piece and tilly was really adamant about wanting black in her house which we think turned out beautifully so we've got the black accent wall we've got our our two lights our mini split which is fabulous we did put a bigger mini split than what was recommended 9000 was btu is recommended we ended up putting 12 000 we ended up doing 12 000 because um we wanted to make sure that it was cool enough and that it heated enough especially with winters being up here we do have five inches of insulation in the wall so according to my brother we should be able to heat this with a candle but we're going to be finding out here pretty quick one kind of issue we have is it doesn't push enough air to the upstairs sometimes so we do have a little personal fan upstairs just to circulate the air the other cool thing is we have these really cool lights and they can either be bright or you can dim them so if you're watching tv you don't have to have a big bright light on you can just have kind of the dimming lights on but it's daytime right now so you can't really tell but it's a great feature our electrician found these wonderful lights even though we have a washer dryer we want to be energy efficient and not just dry for hours and hours especially when you're doing towels or things like that we did talk to the property manager about putting a clothesline outside but we are close to the office so we didn't want to have our laundry just hanging out and so we ended up finding this really cool retractable clothesline and you just pull it out [Applause] and then you just tighten it and there's actually two you know when we have towels you know a dish towel or your dish mats or anything like that and so it's a great feature amazon is our best friend so found it on amazon and we absolutely love it and it's not outside well i mean she's pretty cool the fact that she built me a whole tiny house and it's gonna be mine after i graduate you know so thank you and i mean we have to give a huge shout out to my brother newt hendricks he is the one that took on this project for us i came with him to for the idea of hey let's you want to build a tiny house and he was like sure he builds gigantic barns by trade and so this was right up his alley but on such a smaller scale like i said and it was a great bonding experience with my brother and i um i'm gonna cry it was a great bonding experience to be able to do something for her and do it as a family project and be able to provide something for her future and it was just it was a great experience so this is my kitchen and something i was really adamant about was getting black cabinets and then i also got these countertops because they were the prettiest ones obviously so the cabinets are actually from ikea took us about six weeks to get them in we ordered the pools off of amazon we wanted to make sure that she had plenty of cabinet space for really anything of small appliances dishes tupperware you know you name it the one thing we really loved about the ikea cabinets that we didn't really know about is that the the drawers are soft closed drawers which was a great feature we have again we have we have plenty of space like we're not even close to to having them full and they're a little messy but you know we do live here and um the farmhouse sink was also from ikea again a great inexpensive option but that looks really really good we did like that it was a top mount sink versus an under mount sink we purchased all of our fixtures from either home depot or lowe's nothing nothing fancy we wanted to make sure we did have a light over the the sink also because of heat rising and we didn't do a vent hood um we do have metal plates underneath the cabinets to keep it from being a fire hazard of course so kind of a cool thing about the cabinets in general and how we stabilize them is ikea actually comes with these little plastic feet and they are just that they are plastic they are not sturdy and so my brother actually built a base out of two by fours here on the bottom the base is drilled into the steel in the frame and then when we set the cabinets on top the back of the cabinets he made the base the same height as the wheel well so the back of the cabinets are actually sitting on top of the wheel well that's the same height as the front and then we drilled screws into from the cabinets to the base so they are they are there they're permanent they didn't move any they're not going to move anywhere the refrigerator is a standard apartment size refrigerator again it's the perfect size for this size house especially because we're in town we can go shopping anytime we want we measured the spot perfectly to make sure it fit perfectly again microwave from walmart or target i'm not sure where we got that we've got the tv above we thought this was a great location for the television because it's directly in front of the couch easy viewing yes you're kind of looking up but typically one of us is laying on the couch to watch tv so you're kind of looking up anyway and then tilly is um she's very earthy and eclectic very much a free spirit she likes gems and stones and so as far as decorations go um we have a couple of live plants and then we have her looking eye i don't even know what it's called but it looks really cool what's it called tilly well usually it's like the evil eye but that's not an evil eye that's just it's just a decoration of an eye then she's got her little it's not a peace sign what do you call that one tilly just a hand it's just a hand over here we wanted to make sure we had plenty of storage underneath the stairs we opted not to do cabinet doors we purchased these boxes from target they're 11 by 11 so we made sure that the the spaces were 12 by 12 to fit in the boxes and actually um two fit in each stair so like we have our bicycle helmets in here and tilly has clothes and i mean there's just all kinds of storage so each stair has two boxes in it but this feature turned out really really cool all my brother's idea on this sliding drawer so we opted to not do an oven one because of space and two because tilly doesn't really cook and she doesn't use the oven at home so why put an oven in a house that you're not going to use but we do use an airfryer a lot so we created this drawer that has the air fryer underneath it it's got a plug in the back we did my brother did put metal everywhere so that it's not a fire hazard we made sure we purchased an air fryer that didn't get super hot on the top the first one we purchased was terrible it got way too hot we noticed that right away but this is a good size airfryer it'll it'll hold a 12-inch pizza if you want to cook a pizza but we do a lot of air frying it's a airfryer and a toaster so but it's nice that it's on a drawer and then we make sure we let it cool off before we push it back underneath the stairs but again plenty of storage in this area okay so back here is the bathroom big feature that tilly really wanted was a full-size bathtub now we opted not to do a door so we just took one of tilly's tapestries and just made a curtain because eventually she'll be living here by herself anyway so we just have it on a a tension rod but when you come into the bathroom the first thing you're going to notice is we do have a washer dryer combo it's splendid most rvs have the splendid brand in them it washes and dries which is a great feature and it does a really good job we actually love it and then again tilly's doing the decoration she had this great little halogen light that says let's stay home which is one thing we really like we really like being at home especially now we actually have a stand-up loft and the reason we have a stand-up loft is because this part of the bathroom has this cut out underneath and so the loft is actually right underneath here which is lower than most lofts and so we have lighting back here and then back behind the bathtub is a very large storage room it has a 38 gallon lowboy hot water heater and then the electrical panels back there so we have plenty of storage again um the full-size bathtub was a big feature that we wanted and it's great like most people would say you could not get a full-size bathtub in a home this small but we feel like we have a really big bathroom so we actually just love it another fun feature in the bathroom i mean we did continue the black cabinets in here and the granite countertops but we found this amazing mirror that dims it lights up it also has a feature to where um you have this turned on so when you do take a shower and there's condensation in here the mirror doesn't um fog up or anything like that which we thought was a really cool feature and it lights up from behind and the front we have a regular toilet that was another thing we didn't really want a composting toilet we just wanted a regular toilet especially because we're in town and we're hooked up to all city utilities and then we also have um built-in shelves for whatever you can put up there yeah we had this huge house and we'd been there ever since she was in preschool and i never thought she'd go for moving during her senior year but kind of how that all came about again she was having a little anxiety about her future and we had talked about her coming to college here in durango but out of state tuition was an extra ten thousand dollars a year my idea was do we waste that ten thousand dollars a year on college tuition or do we move a year early during her senior year gain residency and take that additional money and build something that she would always have i like tiny house living versus the dorm because um here i can actually like express myself and like put up my own decorations and it's something that i can keep up forever versus a dorm you just stay in it for a few years it's kind of more like wasted money in my opinion versus like being able to just keep the things that you want to keep around and have it for a while all right now i'm going to show you guys the upstairs all right so one really cool thing about my room is that you can actually walk in the loft most people have this platform that goes all the way to this wall and so you kind of have to scratch slouch down a little bit um the ceilings are 6-2 i think um i'm 5-1 so obviously i fit here very well on the platform i have a queen-size bed and then i also have two lights above my bed and they both have their own light switch and then each side also has a plug-in so that you can charge any of your electronics and then above my bed i have one of my favorite tapestries then over on this side i have two three feet by four feet windows and they're pretty nice because you know you can open them and let air up here and then also around the top of my room i have led lights and you can change it to basically any color that you want so one of the common things that we get asked is why didn't we put any drawers right here under my bed and that's because this is the ceiling for the bathroom below so we obviously could not do that all right so above my bed i have a tv on a stand and you can move it up against the wall say if you want to like clean or something and it's in the way like when i was putting my tapestry up it was very nice that i could move it out of the way and then i have two wardrobes in my room and they both carry quite a lot of clothes i'll show this one since it's closer yeah and then we actually put in our own bars because the other ones were kind of flimsy and would not hold all of my clothes and then i have this with six drawers and i can put more clothes in there and i have a lot of things in there as well over here i have a wall of my jewelry and then over here i have a full body mirror so i can look at all my outfits as a parent you want to make sure you're doing the right thing for your child and i just love her i do and i'm so proud of tilly for taking a risk and a chance and going outside of her comfort zone because prosper's all she had ever known i mean she'd been there since she was five it was a little bit of anxiety when we started packing and the realization that we're leaving something that that we had known for so many years and you know i just wanted her to see a different side of humanity almost you know that there are nice people out there and there are great communities and people are helpful and friendly [Music] we actually found a place to park before we started building the house and this location island cove here in durango like it was really by the grace of god that we even found this location first of all we didn't know this village even existed until we found a website that showed the different villages across the united states and when we zoomed into durango we saw there were two and we didn't know there were two and so we did a phone interview and a facetime interview and they really want community and people that are going to be here long term as a mom you want to make sure your child is safe especially being a female and so it's close to the college it's close to downtown it's close to the river i mean it's really just the most ideal location she's safe and you know this is like a five year at least a five year commitment for right now and then the second that she graduates um my partner and i are we're gonna travel for probably a year or two and just see see the united states i got this idea in my head that my grandparents were a prime example of this that they had all the money in the world and they never went and did anything and then when they could do things they were their health started deteriorating i told my boyfriend i'm like okay we're young we work from home why don't we do it now versus later because who knows what our health will be like later who knows who who knows and i didn't want to get stuck in that that mindset of oh we'll do it when we retire because what happens when you retire you don't most people don't go do what they said they wanted to go do so we're gonna just do it thank you for watching our video and for stopping by tiny house
