[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is [Applause] [Music] welcome to baseball seasons 2004. finally folks go crazy now we're tied at five as we go the bottom of the 11th here's aaron boone to lead off in sports there's disappointment and then there's devastation it's on its way there it goes and the yankees are going to the world series but one team's devastation can be another's elation and the yankees celebration in 2003 was about victory and validation as they once again crushed the hopes of their archrival [Music] but still the spirit of this team and red sox nation had never been easily broken the sun does come up the day after the ball goes under buckner's legs it does come up after aaron boone's home run it is the fact that we invest so much hope in it that the red sox fan will come back again and again and again and each year people ask me in the spring who's going to win the world series and i always say with the absolute confidence and security that this will be the year that the red sacks are going to win [Music] 2004 was going to shape up to be one of these years where anything possibly could happen because that's what happened the year before so you come into spring and 0-4 they're all being asked about each other socks being asked about the yanks vice versa who knew where this thing was going but at the time the socks were still the little brother i was getting beat up by the big brother and there was no answer for that someone would have to answer for not pulling pedro martinez earlier in game seven of the alcs pedro wanted to stay in there he wanted to get the job done just as he has many times for us all season long but grady little was let go shortly after the series and replaced by terry francona we're supposed to win here we're trying to win next year but we're trying to win for a lot of years after that normally when you take over a team there's some rebuilding to do this wasn't the case i mean they were built to try to win i was pretty fortunate to be in that situation yeah look what kind of monitor we had dude friend kona could be coolly confident thanks to the sox acquisition of star righty kurt schilling who cemented a starting staff thought of as suspect in 2003 i wanted to play for them i wanted to play in that organization and ultimately we got a deal done and and it worked out all right okay it's a latin thing he just solidified that rotation because you already had derrick lowe who was solid you already had some wakefield solid you know i was going out there every fifth day and you had pedro with the starting pitching much improved management turned to another pressing need a bona fide closer a need they filled in free agency with keith folk who'd led the league with 43 saves for the a's it made me feel good to be wanted you know to be that piece that they thought they were missing to take him to the next round and the sox weren't done dealing for months they'd been plotting an even bigger strike a trade for perhaps the most complete player in the game alex rodriguez there's number 57 negotiations though eventually collapsed and then just as spring training began things took an even crueler turn aaron boone is our third baseman and i was looking forward to that then he has this unfortunate accident playing basketball and hurts himself and then all of a sudden i get a call on a friday night says this may happen the next couple of days alex rodriguez i said wow the yankees had done it again the yankees jumped in and within a week once they heard that i wanted to move to third base and i wanted to become a yankee then the deal happened pretty quickly it was a stunning turn of events further stoking the yank socks rivalry meanwhile a-rod's move left a texas-sized hole in his old team's lineup but the superstar's departure had an unexpected result a strong start for the rangers the rangers maintained the best record in baseball sometimes that one player if he's getting so much of a spotlight on him can affect your entire team even with their strong start it would be a battle for the rangers in the deep al west where perennial contender and defending division champion oakland boasted perhaps the best pitching trio in the game you know what i think made us unique was that we were very different not only different personalities but different repertoires different pitches different attitudes but i think it really worked for us swing at a mid-strike three and anaheim had retooled under new ownership following a disappointing 2003. audrey moreno came in and felt it was time to invest in the reload and not only did we bring vladimir guerrero in but we brought jose again we bought bartolo colon and callum escobar the angels have won eight in a row and in the al east the red sox yankees rivalry returned from the negotiating table to the baseball diamond boston red sox have won game one of 19 against the yankees expecting to leave the rest of the division behind boston and new york's april games felt like october [Applause] tantalizing fans with the possibility of a postseason rematch for the american league crown the braves had owned the nles for a record nine straight years but in 2004 the division was crowded with talent look at the stud right there starting with the reigning champions the florida marlins are the new world champions of baseball with most key parts of their surprising team returning the marlins were out to prove 2003 was no fluke and then in philadelphia another talented club promised to be a factor as it looked to break through to the playoffs finish him off baby right here let's go this is the favor of the national league east fans are starting to feel it they went away for a little while they're starting to feel that this thing is slowly coming together they've got the best closer now in the national league the new ballpark is going to bring a lot of excitement for them across the country another new ballpark roused a struggling franchise into contention [Music] [Applause] for the regular season starting tonight and under the guidance of long time skipper bruce bocher the padres flourished early in the nl west the padres have won six in a row north on i-5 there was another street that was hard to fathom as dodgers closer eric gagne had gone nearly a season and a half without blowing a save in a row until finally in early july kanye's run of dominance was halted kanye's streak has ended 84 consecutive games a major league record and at the plate in la after years of promise third baseman adrian beltray came of age here's belfrey and this ball is gone and the dodgers won it he was a person who really stepped up to the plate and made immense change in his composure everything about him and when he went to the plate he was an mvp he made that year for that team [Music] as the padres and the dodgers fought for early control of the division the defending nl west champion giants struggled even as barry bonds chased his fourth straight mvp and a piece of history [Applause] [Music] bond's only struggle at the plate was getting pitches to hit but when he did he continued his journey through the record book one or two now to bury bugs [Applause] and bonds wasn't the only star thriving years longer than expected [Applause] age 40 the big unit was still perfecting his craft [Music] and randy johnson [Applause] has thrown a perfect game what a job of pitching by randy johnson he went out there a lot of games with potential to throw perfect games or no hitters and on that particular night he was pretty electric it was a lot of fun to watch another aging veteran ken griffey jr what's up gentlemen was aiming for a renaissance in the nl central injuries that hampered his production for years but early in 2004 he wasn't just healthy he also had an historic milestone in his sights [Music] [Applause] [Music] junior was just the 20th player in baseball history to hit 500 home runs and he did it with his family on hand showing an impeccable sense of timing how about that hug on father's day as the 2004 season continued to take shape it was clear that one division would go down to the wire the american west at that period time in 2004 was you know probably the strongest division in baseball great match-up right here you know every team felt as though i think they had a shot at it [Music] of course you still had oakland over there i mean they had the three-headed monster over there with mulder zeto and hudson hudson turned out the lights on the white sox they just carved lineups up all year long the a's win probably of any team in the american league that season texas was a team you didn't want to face boulder still unable to figure things out he has given up 11 hits tonight we probably have been as big a surprise as any club our young infield is has really been the the backbone of our offense but we're going to have to play extremely well if we're going to win the division as three teams fought for the ao west crown what a dog fight it was a player on the division's fourth place team that captivated the game with a race of his own a prospect that early on would have seemed highly unlikely ichiro's had a tough series that batting average is down to 260. well early in the season there was a feeling that ichiro was finally having his first down season each or all kind of a non factor for the seattle marine but speed doesn't slow hero biggins has it there's the throw safe it wasn't just infield singles soon ichiro was racking up hits at a furious pace fastball hammered into the gap and that's his seventh straight hit and that gets him over the 350 mark now george sisler's record for hits in a season had stood for 84 years but suddenly it no longer seemed so unbreakable guy is amazing then at the all-star game each euro sparked a six-run first as the american league cruise to a 9-4 victory a huge first by the american league and they are able to hang on the win guaranteed the a.l home field advantage in the world series a fact that certainly wasn't lost on the minnesota twins as the two-time defending al central champs set their sights on another [Applause] and as the twins division league continued to grow it became evident baseball's next big thing had arrived his name was johan santana in that 2004 season he put it all together man santana has now retired nine white sox batters in a row he could throw strikes on both sides of the plate at the knees trying for his tenth and he got it put that together with the stuff he was throwing it's it's a recipe for a lot about santana has really just shut the door that pitch was nasty right there he could do no wrong that year and every time he went out we knew we were going to win if you were to vote for the cy young would have to be him santana's 20-6 record and 2.61 era would earn him his first sai young award wow what a performance by johann santana while in st louis a cardinal star was again pounding baseballs all over the park [Applause] the opposite way by albert what you look for with a great year like albury's look for protection in front of behind looking for something good to have we had a right hand hitter and scott rolling he had a left hand entering jim edmonds i mean they were amazing they called them the mv3 and their numbers were staggering offering plenty of support for the cardinal arms and when we were successful it always pivoted around a strong rotation and an o4 we had an outstanding group including matt morris what a job by matt morris now 15 chris carpenter jason marquis and jeff supan each of whom won 15 games the first nl foursome to accomplish that feat in the 21st century leaving the cardinals on cruise control by august once we got it rolling i would say by you know sometime in august we were already starting to point to the postseason atlanta had been pointing to the postseason for 12 straight years but whispers that their run might finally be coming to an end or growing louder you know there is no way in the world that anybody could expect that the 2004 braves would do anything but collapse no gary sheffield no javi lopez and then i mean when you don't have maddox on your staff i mean you're a little leery and here they are losing all these great players and they're supposed to compete [Applause] well you know we we had to have some starting pitchers step up i thought they all had good seasons russ of course fastball strikes recall jared turned in to be the number one starter here's the o2 on the way to piazza mike hampton was a bulldog as advertised and kent strikes out as hampton blows him away these guys were able to recover from losing greatness i mean that's just astounding the names were new but the story the same as the braves opened an eight-game lead by mid-august enroute to another easy title elsewhere in baseball other teams were mining for talent two teams in particular struck gold [Applause] july 4th was three days away but with the socks and yanks squaring off fireworks were expected not me not going to intimidate me don't throw at me a test of wills on the diamond a rumble in the bronx [Applause] that was one of the best most exciting games i've ever been a part of this is not a game that you sit on the dugout bench and watch but in the boston dugout a beat up nomar garciaparra did watch as his yankee counterpart added to his legend in back of short cheater on the run if he's going to make this catch his momentum is going to carry him into the stance he's got to veer off gonna be a tough play jeter on the run and then he never veered off [Applause] i was like holy cow oh what a play by derek jeter when he comes out looking like he just gone 15 rounds with joe lewis [Music] what a player god i hated him i just hated him derek jeter what a player that's what i remember about that night was jeter making the catch no more not playing yankees win the game [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and then you have to july 24th at fenway park alex rodriguez [Applause] [Music] going at it this only heightens the anger between these two teams and the way the game evolves it's billy miller beating mariana rivera the red sox that day changed everything and amidst the change came a surprising end to garcia para's career as the red sox shortstop definitely shocked it was blow to me i mean i never wanted to to leave see guys but there's a business side of baseball and boston made the business decision to upgrade their defense acquiring orlando cabrera and doug mancavitch defensively there's no question this team is much much better they also acquire the man's second in the nl in stolen bases everyone just kind of welcomed me and just said okay so you know we got our team and let's win baseball games the red sox have swept the detroit tigers [Applause] [Music] we're pushing a little bit at the yankees and then the last week they clinch the division [Music] [Applause] we wanted that title you know we pushed hard for it but you always keep that wild card in mind strike three called it's all over the red sox for the second year in a row are headed to post-season play out west the mariners had long lost hope of a post-season berth but could still enjoy ichiro's run at history in the batter's box chasing that all-time single season hit record of 257 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the record had stood for over eight decades dead even with george cislow but now finally someone had caught up [Applause] got that single typical each row he's the single all-time hip king in major league history number two elsewhere in the ale west the angels in the a's were dead even with three games remain [Applause] a showdown in oakland for the division [Music] and garrett anderson coming up we had the guy i think that we wanted up there in any situation and that was garrett anderson ground ball right basis [Applause] and we were able to close it out he's got it and the angels have won the western division in the american league [Applause] in houston the astros had made a june deal for a highly touted switch hitter and soon carl's beltran ignited the ball club with a rare blend of skills this guy's an amazing player what an acquisition the way he played that year he put himself in the category among the greatest players in the game an amazing amount of talent put together in that one person you're talking about a switch hitter with power beltron has belted it run the bases gold glove defense beltron went up and got it a hot bell tran was dangerous but barry bonds was in a class unto himself on route to breaking his own record for walks drawn in a season 232 walks during the season he got on base more than 60 percent of the time bonds also won his second batting title and fourth straight mvp but the giants found themselves three games behind the dodgers heading into the season's final weekend it is now a 3-3 tie let's go let's go let's go and steve finley will be coming up with the bases loaded with one out i knew it was over at that point i knew i was going to get the job done long on high fly ball and immediately when it left the bat i knew the game was over i threw my hands up in the air it would have been a great feeling had it been a sacrifice flight the loss also cost the giants control of the nl wild card and the next day in houston the astro sees the final playoff spot in the nfl the boston red sox entered the 2004 playoffs red hot and brimming with confidence we felt like we had a chance we could hit with anybody and especially when you have shilling pedro kurt chilling and pedro martinez set the tone for the series in games one and two against a formidable angels lineup megan strikes out swinging and on the mound or you couldn't get much better than what schilling was doing schilling throws down the gauntlet what pedro was doing pedro wines here's the 3-2 pitch swing and a miss he had to figure this the dynamic duo was shilling in pedro would be difficult to beat back at fenway park the sox eyed a clean sweep in game three but the angels would go down swinging he hits this ball a long way to right very dangerous hitter reached out and smacked on into the bullpen [Applause] tied up and they are stunned at fenway park the fenway faithful's anxiety would be temporary thanks to the man they called big poppy way back the red sox are going to the american league championship series on the back of david ortiz in october it starts to go really mythical starting with the walk-off home run against the angels ortiz has sent fenway park into a celebration this is how we're doing it was a great way to end that series there goes the idiots yeah it feels good kind of a breather before what everyone knew was going to be the big one the next round while the sox coasted through their division series their bronx rivals hardly enjoy it such an easy ride johann santana who has been the best pitcher in the american league showing why tonight he was just unbelievable man and then when he went out we knew we had a really good chance of winning even if we just scored one run home run for john jones that makes it two nothing minnesota we took game one and we had a chance to win a second game but trailing by one in the bottom of the 12th the yanks put a runner on for alex rodriguez [Applause] he hit a ball in left center gap and the ball bounced over the fence so i remember quite well what he did in the alds because he really broke my heart and what followed may have broken minnesota's back the wind gave the yanks all the momentum heading to minnesota and new york cruised to a win in game three then in game four trailing by four in the eighth they roared back and stunningly the yankees have come back to tie it here in the eighth in the 11th a-rod shine in the spotlight once again alex rodriguez had a huge series against the twins that's just a big stolen base because when sheffield hits the ball into the outfield now to score a run and here comes alex they don't have an alds mvp if they did he would have been that guy because he won that series by himself this is the a-rod that they thought they were getting the entire season he has performed like a champion next mariano rivera shut the door on the game and the series and the much anticipated rematch was set for the second year in a row yankees red sucks lcs while baseball braced for boston new york in saint louis the winningest club in the game continued to soar this cardinal team 105 wins led by albert pujols and larry walker the cardinal bass smashed five home runs in the opener swing in a high drive kiss it goodbye another home run for larry walker st louis took game one eight to three and then gained two by the same score we opened up at home with two solid wins and then went to la and we were able to win the series three and one big albert drives in four of the six and the dodger's unable to answer back to the [Applause] [Music] meanwhile against atlanta the astros were looking to soar the afschools had never won a postseason series in the history of the organization high fly center field that's gone with his third hit today a two-run homer powered by four home runs houston took game one nine to three that was sort of the beginning of man you know we can actually win this thing after a split in atlanta the strolls returned home a trip that didn't cool off belgron at all right bail it's gonna be [Applause] i don't know if i've ever seen a hitter go off like he went off in that series though the braves forced the game five beltron drove in five to lead houston to a series deciding route there goes beltran driving it to right field [Applause] carlos beltran absolutely killed the braves this is a guy that's got three home runs in this series [Music] he was a one-man wrecking crew carlos beltran has set a national league division to series record four home runs in a series to get it done against the braves who had been sort of a thorn in our side for a lot of those years was pretty special for the first time a cool autumn night in downtown st louis missouri it's the opening game of this national league championship series and a clash of intra division rivals this is a classic series if you look at the seven games that were played in the nlcs it was as exciting as any series you want to see at the heart of the battle were the sluggers including the hottest hitter on the planet [Music] but saint louis had an answer in albert pujols who match beltran blast for blast in the first two games [Music] [Applause] carlos beltran just keeps on carrying this ball club jump on guys he was just unbelievably hot and not just base hits but he was hitting home runs but pujols and the red birds were relentless themselves and the cards took games one and two they just took the lead well this is some kind of lineup they throw 10 on the board last night six more here tonight winning the two games we felt like we were in charge of the series but we never were comfortable because we had great respect for houston and in houston beltran stayed hot as the astros rebounded in game [Applause] seventh three this postseason wow eight home runs in the post season and none bigger than that he was one of the main reasons why we ended up going as far as we did with the series tied at two game five in houston went to the ninth a scoreless tie setting the stage for a new home run hero [Applause] in fact in saint louis it did we're in the bottom of the 12 the pitch [Applause] jimmy hits this towering home run that was an explosion in our ballpark [Music] [Applause] could only be decided one way by another home run albert got a big hit a chance and then rolling a two run [Applause] homer roland's blast was more than enough for the cardinal bullpen for the first time [Applause] i can remember at the time thinking it's about as happy as ever been in uniform because we finally we're going to the world series as a st louis cardinal it was as exciting as any seven game series in national league history but it was played in the shadows of another epic showdown featuring perhaps the premier rivalry in all of sports we're in for another wild one i'm sure here they are the arch rivals on center stage again and we're in a better situation than we was last year you think you're gonna beat the yankees uh we better if not we're in deep trouble in my dreams it's fun i think the more attention the more uh people that are watching it should be enjoyable the yankees were loaded the red sox were loaded it was going to be a battle once again boy is this crowd ready going in the series he wasn't doing anything different it's another series and we got to go out there and concentrate on the job at hand in game one the job at hand was simple the awesome thing about being a starting pitcher is you have the ability to make 50 000 people shut up when you're on the road 56 000 strong at yankee stadium i'm not sure i can think of any scenario more enjoyable than making 55 000 people from new york shut up but pitching on a bad ankle kurt schilling was ineffective and the yanks battered him around early it is one hop off the wall here comes jeter here comes [Applause] and the next night fans in the bronx greeted a familiar foe with a fresh cheer and when the bombers got the best of pedro martinez they went up to boston with a two-nothing series lead really after 2-0 we kind of felt that the yankees had the momentum the yankees were again in the red sox heads and back at fenway park game three began badly for the sox i start the game i didn't feel that great swinging a line drive deep to right field back to the warning track and it's gone and it's three nothing yankees in the first got rocked man i mean the yankees were all over me right away a blast out on the lansdowne street off the bat of rodriguez the yankees are kicking our butts swinging gonna drive deep to left way back into the monster seats for a three-run homer 12-6 yankees it was almost like a football score 14-6 new york red sox fans were deflated this is not time lapse photography put another one up it's 19-8 the 19-8 game is abject embarrassment for the red sox and their fans in a ton of trouble for the red sox losing like that wasn't fun but i didn't care as much about the score as much as we lost the yankees have pounded their way three games to none lead in this alcs they go up three games to nothing and we just have a tough road to climb [Music] the first three games of the 2003 alcs laid a gloom over boston how do you come back from this being embarrassed on your home diamond by your most hated rival being down 03 to the yankees and getting your butt kicked in game three you know people in the press box recover the red sox here are like well here we go again you know the curse lives i don't care who you are everyone gave up [Music] well almost everyone i mean i know you're from madison and i know you grew up a red sox fan but don't count the socks out i have a guy like kevin millar i mean what a great team player he always got us going that's the way we like it bang it out and then bomb socks nation take over and i remember telling him i said you know you're just dumb enough to think that we can do this and all i was saying that day was do not let us win game four and people didn't think i was crazy i talk i just talked to people kevin milar was walking around like he was on a pogo stick anybody who'd listen don't let us win this game tonight don't let the sox win this game don't let us win this game he stood up and you know he hollered and hey we win tonight we win this thing positive thinking was an asset but by the ninth the socks were on the verge of elimination the red sox are three outs away from being swept and mariano rivera was on the mound the thing that gets lost i think in that whole inning was the malar walk [Music] out went milar and in came dave roberts given a green knife to make a move for second [Applause] terry looks down at the end of the dugout and gives me a wink and i'm not making it up it's true he gave me a wink and said okay go out there and do your thing and that was my cue to go out there and you know make something happen [Applause] at the plate was third baseman bill miller who had had some success against mariano in the past here he comes the game [Music] has is a save and the red sox have life the one thing that really got me is hearing that crowd as you're running down first and knowing that he's going to score it's awesome the game stayed tied into the 12th when david ortiz stepped to the plate looking to keep the sox season alive he was the game changer the game-winner the guy that he knew his teammates depended on for the big hit and the big moment [Applause] [Music] the next day a modest dose of optimism began permeating the city and when game five also went to extra innings and big poppy again stepped to the plate the power of positive thinking suddenly seemed more formidable [Music] [Applause] [Music] i've never seen a guy carry a team this guy was as clutch as i've ever seen i should have clicked in at that time like oh man we are watching something special no team has ever been down 3-0 and come back and won three in a row but if the sox were going to make history at yankee stadium they now needed a minor medical miracle with curt schilling's ankle in shambles before game six the solution itself sounded painful achieved temporary stability by sewing the loose tendons directly to the bone knowing she'll knowing that once he gets the adrenaline going if that thing could just stay together he was probably going to be okay the combination of the sutures and adrenaline worked and schilling went seven strong innings yankees don't score and suddenly it was yanks fans looking nervous particularly when mark bellhorn sliced a drive to left drives one down the left field line matt so he on the move it is the sox rolled to a 4-2 win they tied the series at three and seized every bit of the momentum the red sox had something going this wasn't going to end the way it did every year but to complete the comeback boston would have to silence the yankee stadium ghosts one last time silencing the yankee bats meanwhile fell to derrick mull derrick lowe has been sensational and in the top of the first big poppy delivered another big blow the drive hammer deep to right field game seven was special especially for me i mean i hadn't hit in the entire series and uh i picked a great game to go ahead and start to hit the ball [Music] i found my swing i put on a good swing and as many say the rest is history they had defeated their nemesis in the most improbable fashion they were headed to the fall classic he chose the first and the red sox that won the american lake the greatest victory in team history congratulations to the red sox they deserve it we took it to another level america oh my goodness it had been 86 years since the red sox had won a world series but after a miracle come back confidence was high once we got past that that big hurdle in the yankees then i think we felt that we could accomplish anything it was all about boys was all about the red sox were really good when they came back to beat the yankees four times i think they really felt like there was a team of destiny and along with destiny the cards also had to deal with a red hot big pop dude you need to stop all right the card's biggest concern in the series was ortiz and in the first inning he showed why the pitch drive deep to right if it's fair it's [Applause] gone the sox raced to a 7-2 lead but the cards wouldn't go quietly chipping away and tying it in the eighth once again the fenway faithful were being tested once again the 2004 red sox came [Music] [Applause] you true it ortiz had been the focus but it was bellhorn his third straight game with a homer you can't win without some people doing some extraordinary things and he was right in the middle of that with joy restored at fenway keith full [Music] [Applause] [Music] they've now won five [Applause] once we got the momentum going you know it we went through the the world series and and to be honest with you to me it was kind of a blur the next night curt schilling returned to the mound battered ankle and all he's probably shouldn't have been out there but i've been around him long enough to know that not only would he pitch but he'd find a way to be successful the ankle held up and shilling held the cardinals chilling with the down it also didn't hurt that the socks led nearly all night thanks to a blast early from jason [Applause] hits off the veratech at the 420 marker ramirez scores 14 scores suddenly everything looked easy including six postseason wins in a row the ground ball is short cabrera has it stumbles gets up throws to first and the red sox lead the series two games tonight we had momentum we have confidence and i don't think we ever trailed in that series which is you know pretty remarkable and there was more of the same when the series moved to saint louis [Applause] game three was pedro martinez's first ever world series start he made the most of the opportunity pedro on center stage in the biggest game of his career in the world series petey started out the game in st louis and when as he got into the game you could see him starting to get comfortable and then he just started firing strikes swinging in a miss he struck him he was outstanding tonight 98 pitches he retired the last 14. the boston red sox are one victory away of winning a world series after coming back from the brink of elimination the sox were on the verge of putting generations of ghosts to rest boston red sox one win away trying to do something that the franchise hasn't accomplished in 86 years and that is win a world series and as johnny damon indicated in the first there was no more time to waste we're gonna drive deep to right field we're back it goes man gone johnny david is right off the ball game with a home run on the verge of an eighth straight postseason win the sox were set to finally vanquish an ancient curse the 1-0 [Music] [Applause] [Music] and it was as cathartic as sox fans could have ever dreamed shocking the yankees and never losing again you think about all those teams in the past you know the teams that that had ted williams and jim rice karl jastrimsky and those teams never won and you start to shake your head and say man we just accomplished something that was very cool the 2004 red sox victory celebration lasted an entire year but in 2005 the playoff magic didn't return the chicago white sox have completed a three-game sweep of the boston red sox but in 2007 boston was back in the world series and again swept their way
