we got a stretch for this one I got my coffee I got your beats let's do this all right super pump for this one so this is what we're gonna do today a couple days ago I asked you guys to send me your beats your track outs your stems in order for me to mix them on a video you guys sent a whole bunch of them over 200 beats there's some crazy stuff in there you guys like blue in mind with some of these beats but obviously for the video I'm not gonna be able to mix all 200 plus beats cuz that would take days so I picked 5 beats out of the ones that you guys sent now this is definitely gonna be something that it's gonna have more episodes like this is gonna be a thing that I do every now and then so if you beat didn't get picked don't get offended don't get hurt it's no worries we'll do another one soon and hopefully next time you'll get it with that said today's video is gonna be pretty long compared to my usual videos I don't know exactly how long it's gonna come out to be but I already know it's gonna be a long one so with a video this long and with this much stuff in it I guarantee you that if you watch it all the way through no matter what your level is no matter if you've been doing this for a week or years you will learn something there will be something in this for you to either learn or get inspired to do or get inspired to try there will be something for everybody in this video so I know it's a long one but stick around it's gonna be worth it also the last thing I wanted to say before we get into the video I am NOT like a super professional mixing engineer I have my methods I have my system I have my personal tastes things that I like to do sounds that I like to kind of like go for but this is not like a final version or anything this is my best version of whatever you guys sent me so yeah don't get offended if I destroy your beat and you hate it what's up this is it from the future I'm just now editing the video and now that I have kind of like a better idea of the direction I like the shape of this video now it's gonna go I just wanted to let you guys know that I dedicated a couple extra minutes to the first beat just to give you guys some like general instructions on mixing like how to set up your session how to like level stuff like very basic but super important things that I just kind of wanted to put in the first week so if that stuff is too basic for you and you already know I just sit tight the cool like harder more complex creative stuff is coming up yeah just wanted to let you guys know all right be number one this one was sent to me by Jar Jar beats and this is what it sounds like the way it is now just important the stamps and this is where we're all right let's get to work I really like where this beat is going has a lot of potential all the parts are there the drums are good the 808 SAR good the melody was good we just got to mix it because it sounds not great so I'm gonna start by organizing the tracks a little bit and naming them something that makes sense to me so we got kick we got clap we got stair 808 that's more hats more hats more hats more hats there are a lot of hi-hat we got this weird effects open hats organizing the tracks always takes a bit and it's a little bit tedious but it's so important and it's gonna speed up your mixing process so much because if you have your project in a way that like makes sense to you and everybody's got their order like I like my drums on top my noƩ that my melodies and then all my like extra effects and stuff if you have something that makes sense you're just gonna speed up your workflow and you'll be able to like repeat it better rather than having every project with a bunch of tracks everywhere and it's just confusion alright now that we have something that makes sense let's start mixing we're gonna start from the drums so I'm gonna just solo all the drums which is a lot of drums man you put so many germs on this alright I want to boost the kick drum a little bit cause it's a little bit weak so instead of turning up the volume of the kicks I'm actually gonna turn down the volume of everything else all the other drums that's a lot better let's start getting some eq's and getting rid of some of the frequencies that we don't need so for making sure I'm just gonna put a little boost right here in the low end because it's just missing a little bit of punch [Music] for pretty much every other drum sound I'm gonna go in and cut all the low frequencies so that only kickin 808 are gonna take up the low end and I'm gonna have all the space that they need [Music] this be there's a lot of higher parsed so to create a little more space in variation I'm gonna start messing with the panning of them I'm gonna pen the two main ones one left and one right just a little bit like ten and ten and on the other ones I'm probably gonna put some Auto pen just so they move by themselves and that's what I go and automate every single one because that would be just too much work and it also it's totally not worth it so autopen do Jeff so many hi-hat tracks are like one two three four five six seven hi-hat tracks that's crazy it honestly sounds cool but there's a so many hiya let's work on these extra snares and percussions all I'm gonna do is just cut the low frequencies for now and I'm gonna pan them a little bit like I did with the high hats there's no real rule for like panning just trust your ears and just kind of like get creative with it the idea is to clear up space for everything so that you don't have too many sounds like overlapping in the same spot so make sure you don't bend them all in the same direction or just all at the same amount just kind of like space them all out all over the spectrum so do you have like this nice wide perspective for your drums alright so now that I have all my drums kind of leveled and like with some pen I'm gonna group them all into one single group then I'm gonna call drums and now we can work on the group and we can do some final EQ some compression all the stuff that we need first of all let's check our levels make sure we're not clipping and when I pull up span I'm gonna pull up utility and I'm gonna pull back the gain until I'm at back like -18 level right about there is good then we're gonna get a compressor I like using these DPR 402 for drums and I'm just gonna load up a preset that I have that's called drum group I'm gonna pull up any Q I'm using the fabfilter pro-q 2 and I'm gonna start carving out some frequencies there's just kind of harsh right now especially on the high hats [Music] alright I'm pretty happy with that for now I'm not super happy with the kick drum still but it's just lacking some like punch maybe it's a sample maybe it's the way it was sent to me I'm not sure but let's try to see how it works with the 808 cause maybe together they kind of complement each other and they just fix themselves the 808 simple is solid and it has a lot of attacks so let's see how it works with the kick drum if they complement each other nicely I went ahead and down the kitchen by one semitone and now it hits a lot harder just I need it to be a little bit deeper we'll see how it works with the melody but I really feel like the 808 should be an octave lower like this is where it is right now look what happens if I make it an octave lower hey I don't know to me that's a lot harder so I'm gonna keep it like that for now let's see how it works with the melody I went ahead and replaced the melody in the 808 I brought them up both by one semitone I just wanted them to be a little bit like clear and they were just kind of like too much in the low-end especially the melody the light Dyne I'm gonna put some RC twenty on the melody cuz it's just a little bit dry a little bit too like flat I want to give it some more movement alright now that we got all the parts mixed let's go in the master track I'm gonna pull up on EQ got some more of these low frequencies under 20 Hertz to give it that like bass boost and I'm gonna cut the high frequencies as well alright the last thing I usually do to my mix is I like to use neuter and choo and just I pull up one of these presets and then maybe tweak it a little bit [Music] alright this first beat is mixed I'm really happy with it I'm gonna go ahead and master it and I'll tell you guys the final thing right now [Music] here we go we beat number two this all was sent to us by Joe Stanley thank you Joe for sending the beat I already imported the stamps I already went ahead and organized them because there's no point in showing you that again and this is what it sounds like right now [Music] all right Joe this is fired this is really good we definitely have to work on the mix and we're about to do that but the beam is really fire I love the Mele I don't know if it's a sample that you got from somewhere if you made it from scratch but either way fire all right to keep the video a little more interesting I'm gonna try not to repeat the same things that I did before like I'm still gonna do them because they still need to like level stuff and pan stuff but I'm gonna kind of like just tell you I'm doing it but I'm not gonna show it too much because otherwise it's just like I'm doing the same exact thing again so yeah let's start with drums the beat doesn't have a kitchen right now is just the 808 that kind of serves as both I would have definitely added a kitchen with this type of 808 but we'll see we'll see how it works out all right just like I did with the other beat I set the levels for my drums I queued a little bit I compressed it a little bit and that's about it I definitely think I'm gonna want to add a kitchen before analogous to 808 and see where where I think I recognize that simple hit Deline TR Fu speakers volume 1 808 number 2 [Music] just a little advice the way you played this part the way it chops the sample make sure you run the simple all the way to the end or at least you put a fade-out after every note otherwise you're gonna hear this little click when the sample finishes you're getting that pop because the sample gets to the end and it doesn't have like a fade-out curve but it just kind of abruptly like cuts off and you get a pop so just a little heads up for the future pay attention to it because you can definitely hear it in the mix I don't assemble pretty well I don't really need to do anything to it I'm just gonna put a limiter on it at minus 18 so that even when he does like octave jumps it doesn't go to like loud other than that though it's good yeah it's pretty good but it's definitely lacking that like kick drum punch so I'm gonna go ahead and add a kick put a little bit of sightseeing compression on the 808 [Music] cool that's fine let's do the melody [Music] dude this melody is so good I'm just gonna catch some of the low frequencies because it's still a little bit bass heavy and I'm gonna sidechain it to the kick drum just a little bit just to have a little bit of like more space but this melody though this melody is fire [Music] alright a melody is pretty much ready to go the only thing I'm gonna add is this super VHS plug-in which kind of makes it wider and more like vintage II and just cool we're gonna press the magic button and let it do its thing all right flute represent the flute game alright man the selection in this beat is really really good so as you can see I don't really have anything to do I just have to like set the level spend everything a little bit maybe EQ some low frequencies out and that's it alright I don't think I want to do anything else is beat it sounds dope I'm gonna go ahead and master it and I'll play you guys the final thing right now [Music] all right here we go we be number three this one was sent in by Johnny lakeshore Thank You Johnny and this is what it sounds like all right first of all this makes me so happy you use the same 808 as the guy before 808 number two all right these speakers volume one petal anti sounds I really appreciate it all right let's get mixing there's always I'm gonna start with the drums let's see where we're at with the sound of the drums not bad man this is a really good starting point I'm not a super fan of the clap with the reverb it sounds like too EDM II for me but we'll make it work first thing I want to do is pitch down the kick drum by like a few semitones it just needs a little more body and a little like just a deeper sound I want to fix that clap or actually fix is not the right term it's more like a personal preference I want to get rid of the reverb and the way I'm gonna do that in Ableton I'm just gonna press warp I'm gonna go on beats right here and I'm gonna do transients and pull down this number which basically cuts the note right after the transient and depending on how much I do it's gonna get shorter and shorter there you go I like that a lot better put the usual Auto pen on the highest to give him a little bit more movement I like what you did with the drums man they're nice and simple but their BIOS seat they're hard and you pick some pretty good sounds just like I did before I'm going to group him into a single drum group and I'm gonna compress them and EQ them a little bit alright let's bring in the 808 obviously I love the sample that you picked it's one of my samples but you did make a mistake with the side chaining you sidechain that a lot in fact if you listen to it by itself but even with c'mon you can really hear that dip in the 808 it's kind of like fading in on every single note instead of just hitting and there's nothing I heard the bounce of the beat and like make it less hard so I'm actually going to completely get rid of the party you did with the sidechain and I'm gonna use the same part that you have without the sidechain right here at the beginning before the kick drum comes in now that I have a clean version without the sidechain I'm going to quickly show you how I would sidechain it so I'm just gonna use the Ableton compressor I'm going to put the kick drum on the sidechain and I'm gonna pull down the threshold just a little bit you want to see it working but just like a little bit cool right there is pretty good it's nice and subtle you can't really tell that it's even there but it's doing its job of freeing up that space for the kick drum so that's all we need cool let's start working on the melody so we have three melody tracks the first one is like the main one with the guitar and it sounds like this I really like what you did to it is pretty much ready to go I'm just gonna catch some low frequencies I'm gonna sidechain you to the kitchen just a little bit and that's it I really like what you did with like the stereo spread of it it's nice and wide it's nice and like Spacey good job on this one man bring in melody number two oh okay these are just like little cent hits so I'm gonna put some Auto pen on them so they don't hit right in the middle but they kind of move around it's already like pretty Spacey by now and add some reverb to it just to make it even like further away I don't want it to like hit too hard I want it to be kind of in the back as if it was like a sound like far away yeah it's pretty good cool then we have the third melody which i think is just like a low synth all right what's how with this one I make sure you cut the low frequencies because this is a pretty low sound and it's definitely gonna fire with both the main melody and the 808 [Music] dude this video is really fired I really like where it's at right now the melody in my opinion is lacking some like top and so I'm gonna try to fix that by doubling the main guitar melody and pitching it an octave higher and also doubling the tempo just like basically like double timing it yeah that's really fired now I want to try to blend this one with the original melody I want them to go at the same time and not like fight with each other but kind of complement each other so I'm gonna put a bunch of reverb and delay on the second like higher-pitched one and I'm gonna pull down the volume a lot I'm gonna put some autopen on it and then I think we're done with this all right I don't think I need to do anything else so this one it sounds really good I'm gonna go ahead and master it and I'll tell you guys the final thing right now [Music] here we go two more beats to go whoo this one is beat number four and it was sent in by bird music this is what it sounds like right now this is a crazy melody dude this is so good [Music] all right I'm really excited to work on this one this is I mean no offense to anybody but this is the best beat so far off today's video there are a lot of issues with the mix the first one being the levels the drums are way too quiet the 808 is way too quiet we're gonna fix that but this B we're gonna make it crazy this B is gonna is gonna be great by now you know the drill let's get started with the drums the hats and percussions are already pants so all I'm doing is setting the levels and I put some compression on my kick and all my clap these drums are great you pick some really good samples that really work together the percussions are not like stepping all over each other but everything that's got its own space good job man this is though I'm gonna group the drums put some compression on the whole thing some EQ check the level and then the drums are done alright let's bring your Nate it seems like you already put a little bit of sidechain compression but I'm just gonna put my own as well just with the kick drum just a very slight sidechain all right hey he's pretty good but I want to saturate it a little bit I want to distort it a little bit and then I think it's slightly out of tune we're gonna check it in a second but it sounds like it's slightly out of tune so I'm gonna saturate it first [Music] cool let's check the tuning of it because it really feels like it's a little bit sharp yeah as you can see every notes about like 15 cents hi so I'm just gonna go in the d2 right here and put minus 15 and I should be pretty much spot-on [Music] dude I really like that role they're like Skyrim chant that's fire I'm gonna turn down the volume a little bit it's a little bit hot but other than that so cool yeah dude this beat is fire I don't really want to do anything else to it it was already pretty good this sounds that you picked works perfectly the parts are really good good job on this one man I'm gonna go ahead and master and I'll play you guys the final thing right now all right here we go last beat of the day if you're still with me I love you beat number 5 was sent in by high-concentration thank you so much for sending your beat and this is what it sounds like right now [Music] [Applause] another fire beat I'm a little bit concerned with the sound selection on the drums but maybe it's fine maybe it's just a mixing we'll see melodies fire do I really like it I like the 808 I like a lot about this beat good job man let's get into it you know the drill drums the second hi-hat is a little bit too sharp so I'm gonna get rid of some of the higher frequencies just kind of try to make it a little like rounder and like mellow we're cool that sounds bad to me I'm also gonna put some autopen on it so it moves around a little it's just a little bit too much like in the center a little bit of advice for drums in general try not to overlap percussions with your kick drum because the kick drum is always gonna like fight with the percussion and you're only gonna hear one or the other so you're either gonna lose the kick drum where you lose the percussion or you're just gonna lose kind of both because they're like phasing and you're just gonna get this like muddy like thump sound samples are solid though they sound clean they sound crisp I'm gonna put all the drums into a group we're gonna compress them EQ them a little bit and the drums are done cool I'm pretty happy with the jumper now let's bring in the 808 [Music] I actually boosted a little bit of bass frequencies on the 808 around 5055 Hertz just to give it a little more body was a little it was missing a little bit of body [Music] this is totally personal preference but if it was me I would have gone with like a shorter 808 just with this type of drum pattern with this type of melody I feel like a shorter 808 even with a similar tone but just a little bit shorter it would have hit a lot harder than this one this is totally fine though it's just personal preference alright there are a few melodies here we have one that's like 50% so it's like like half times we have a regular sample we have a main sample and we have to counter melodies like that come in in different sections so let's put all the melodies together make sure that they work with each other and then we're gonna check him against the drums an 808 to make sure that they all fit together [Music] I'm gonna take this melody number two which is really high-pitched and kind of fighting with the counter melody number one like there are two contour melodies at the same time and they're kind of fighting each other I'm gonna take the second one I pitched it down an octave and now it sounds like this I actually really like these melodies man I like the sounds that you baked I like that vintage like you know very like dusty vibe so yeah good job on the melody all right let's check our melodies against drums and 808 and let's see what it sounds like all right I really like where it's at right now I'm just gonna go into master track I'm gonna put a little bit of an EQ make sure that the low frequencies are cut out I just don't want it to be muddy and then I'm gonna quickly run it through Neutron two with one of the presets like I did at the beginning and just kind of tweak it a little bit and now I think we're good [Music] alright I'm really happy with that this one is done as well I'm gonna go ahead and Messer and I'll tell you guys the final thing right now [Music] Lauren Lauren all right we made it this is the end of the first episode of whatever I'm gonna call this series if you're still with me it's probably like half an hour into this video you are the best I just love you too that this was such a blast it was a great learning experience and something that I loved for like the community in general so I'm really looking forward to doing more episodes like this one I hope you guys love it as much as I do and yeah
