[Music] this time I have a Mitsubishi Hsu 80. some consider this to be the best Mitsubishi that they ever made I think it was the hsu-82 personally but this thing's heavy as hell it's got a lot of circuitry in it it's got digital special effects with multi-pitcher and all that other crap again the hsu-82 had more features and better playback and everything but this is a big monster and let's take a look at it this is another VCR that I had shipped in this is an HS or a u80 hsu80 and he bought it from a guy on Kg Kijiji for a few dollars in non-working order hmm But a surprise I used to have one of these at one time I did that wrong version of it I got rid of it years ago I think it's the same one is this um I'll know when to get it out of here on the box anyway we start to stop and then we're starting to start and then stop and not unleash the tape before ejecting so he figures the mode switch took it apart to clean it long story short still doing the same thing and uh he's acquired two of the mode switches are the same but not exactly for the aces give me a look and give me a breakdown of the damages and if it's worth fixing or if it's fixable at all so let's uh dig into this one and see where we're up against this is indeed the same machine I had uh I had the electro home version of it and I got rid of it many many moons ago because I was having some issues with it at the time dry vibers this one has a drive idler if I'm not mistaken I got rid of this and upgraded to the Hsu 82. which is a a far superior machine doesn't weigh as much as this one but as far as what it did was uh did a lot more it had the variable pitch activators on the heads so the the heads could actually dynamically track as the head drum was spinning the heads could change and dynamically track the tape so that you could play it in variable speed right from uh right crawl right up to you know I think it was uh one third two-thirds regular speed double Speed Triple speed and full scan without any lines in the picture and I've still got the hsu-82 and well last time I checked it it worked I haven't used it for a while should dig it out again and give it a good run through but um this one here um used a bunch of digital circuits and so forth on it anyway let's pop it apart and see what it's doing wood side panels come off and then the top lifts off of it all right so um as I say drive idler type machine these ones here that's one of the reasons I got rid of it was because it uses a drive idler the drive idler would wear out and then it wouldn't take up the tape properly but these machines when I had mine and I had mine when these were still current the electro home version I forget what the model of g91 or g81 I think was the model of that anyway buddy mice still got one in fact he offered to give it to me because he was getting rid of it he said hey you want that thing and I said uh what do I need another Super VHS machine for I've got like enough of them to sink a battleship but I think he's getting tired of looking at it sitting in his storage locker because he hasn't used it in in uh I was going to say something that I won't say that word i i a term that we used to use a long time but I won't say it but anyway he hasn't used it in well let's say he hasn't used a thing since men were us walking on the moon how's that sound well I mean not maybe not quite that long but you know what I'm getting at um anyway um I got rid of mine years ago because of problems that were starting to show up in it now when I bought mine we got these as a deal when Mitsubishi was blowing them out now Mitsubishi when they entered Canada back in the mid 80s I guess it was late 80s how it worked was in the 1980s and a lot of people didn't know this but the Canadian government had embargoes on Japanese manufacturers because the Japanese were being accused by the government of the day for dumping products in Canada and harming Canadian companies and the only way a manufacturer could sell their product in Canada was they had to pick up a company that was failing and at this particular point in time a Metro home which was a Canadian company where they made their products in Canada they made their TVs and their stereos and their cabinets everything they were made here in Ontario but the company was failing so what happened was Mitsubishi purchased electric home and that allowed them to import Mitsubishi manufactured products and put the electro home badge on it and sell it as a veteran they were identical to the Mitsubishi models Mitsubishi could not sell any product under a Mitsubishi's own brand at the time in Canada they could but they could bring their product in and sell it as Electro home so this shop that I worked at we became an electro home dealer to carry the Mitsubishi product and I had a bunch of Electro home branded stuff I had a big screen projection TV and I had a bunch of VCRs and those machines were fantastic the HS u82 the in in the case of the Retro home branding AVR j04 AVR j05 if you are you know all those ones they were great machines but that was a generation that followed this one the first one that came out they brought in was this one and I was able to pick it up real cheap like at Cost I think it was around maybe 400 bucks and it would retail for a thousand or more but the cost on them was really quite reasonable and that's why I bought one and it was it was a good deck when I used it but it wasn't accurate it has flying race heads on it I think it says flying very sense but it wasn't accurate enough for editing it was a consumer machine but it was not accurate enough for editing so I didn't really use it much for that but uh anyway let's see what's going on with this one I'll first remove the head cover the shield just so that we can get a better look at what's going on under here yeah flying erase heads there they are on the top rotary transformer for flying race heads we should see what it does when I try to load of tape tape goes in and I think the idler is worn I think it's a worn idler it's for one well it's moving a bit but there's not much tension on there The Idler is only one of a couple problems remember I said the owner of it tried to repair it himself remember that part so we have to fix what problems were created when it was attempted to be serviced yeah the idlers worn out for one because it won't rewind fast forward go into play and it's acting up stop let's see eject switches switches are acting up on here that's a that's a loading switch okay so we got a couple switches that are acting up on this one for starters there's a switch here when the when the mechanism is fully ejected there's a switch that activates the tell that the tape is out for one uh looks like the mode switch is not working properly on this one gotta get to the mode switch I forgot even where it is on this it's been so long since I worked on one of these machines geez it's been years it's been probably 30 years since I've seen one of these machines if not more the last one I worked on was the one that I owned before I got rid of it bottom cover comes off with a couple screws on the bottom and on the sides and I need to get under the digital board if I'm mistaken I got to get under the digital board access the transport [Music] [Music] it's okay we knew they were coming apart again I guess all right under here is the mechanism you have to remove the heat sink and the power supply lifts up the power board on it to access the wires are pretty short here but to access the mode switch which was right down here and we also have to take out this other bracket or swing the board out early because there's a screw that's underneath there that needs to come out to access the mode switch not the easiest machines to work on as you can see and that's one of the reasons that I dumped mine was because well it's not an easy machine to work on just this way the thing the way that this is behaving screams that the mode switch is not working properly so I want to go and double check that make sure that the contacts are actually good on it looks like it was put together with hot glue which doesn't stick to this at all maybe that's why it's not uh working properly because it's not secured these were normally fused together they're a sealed type switch and basically when you break them apart to get into them you have to seal them down again using the same method that they used before and that's to melt the plastic might be why it's not working because the the glue that's on here is not going to hold this switch the circuit board together onto the switch so if I just remove that glue the switch will probably pop apart without any effort guarantee this which is going to pop apart just lift off because it's loose as you can see in contacts look to be okay I'm just gonna make sure they're clean and also put a little more tension onto the actual switch here and then put this back together and fuse the plastic back together to hold it together back when I was servicing these at the shop and we sold a few of them because we got a good deal on them but these were the machines that nobody wanted to fix because once they found out the amount of time required to tear these down and to change things like the mode switch or take it right apart take it out board and this bracket being in the way for the other screw on the other side by the time they found out how much work was involved to change it they walked away from it same with even changing the idler on these things is a pain in the ass to to do that it's just they were like a lot of the machines off the era they were really overbuilt and very difficult to work on and of course with the price the way the prices of VCRs were dropping right after this came out nobody in their right mind was spending money to fix these things I'm just letting my soldering iron warm up here so that I can put the switch back together and we'll fuse over the plastic here to hold it together that's how we hold these back together we just melt the plastic and push it over the top to hold the the circuit board in place yeah should burn yourself in the process of doing this incidentally because you're basically melting the plastic and then getting your finger in there and pushing it down but I want to make sure that that's a it's got a good a good contact between the switch and the actual board itself will throw this power module back in and give this thing a try and see whether it's done anything different to the way that it operates all right I want to see if it does anything different this time but I just want to see how the mechanism operates whether it will release the tape properly oh look I fixed that part cool okay let's see if we get a picture okay we got an alignment issue on this one let's see if I can tweak those guides where's my screwdriver see if I can just adjust the guides on these this is loose on some of these holes important so I'll show you what I'm doing I'm not using a scope or anything at this point using a adjustment tool you can do a screwdriver too but this just makes it easier because it fits right down over top of the guide and I'm just kind of eyeballing this on the screen to try to get the alignment close and I've now got a perfect picture I don't know if I've got any Hi-Fi sound off it yet but I do have a perfect picture on this as you can see I have a perfect picture pause digital pause jog shuttle this should be a slow tracking on this if I'm not mistaken where is it intelligent filter from Miracle made well that part's working I know what's going to happen I want to hit a Jack or hit stop it's going to probably try to eat the tape because the idler is no good so if I hit stop it's going to unlace but of course the tape's not winding back properly because the idler itself like rewind is not working because the idler is uh is worn out I'm just gonna try another tape I don't know if it was Hi-Fi on that tape or not so I'm just going to try to try a tape with Hi-Fi and see if I can get some Hi-Fi sound because I wasn't getting anything so far let's just try a my super VHS tape here oh yeah look at Hyde Park sound now there's a super VHS playback gotta shut that off obviously but I've got Hi-Fi sound digital tracking svhs and I hit the pause button like it was still frame off that sucker last because it's digital right and if I hit the jog shuttle I can go one frame at a time and go slow motion load up the search back down to still reverse this is this is lame ass effects that are built in on a Panasonic PBS 350. the ability and the wipes that it did this is a dub obviously dumb off of it because I put High face sound on it but um this was a a dub I'm just gonna check my tracking here manual tracking yeah looking good right in the middle and then Auto tracking digital tracking as they call it let's see this machine you can turn the tracking you can set it to Auto or manual so there it's working the guy who owns this will be pretty happy to see that it is working and all I basically did was re-clean the mode switch but I put it together properly he had put it together just using hot glue and hot glue is not going to hold that little circuit board in place it needs to be that's why they fused it with plastic before you got to melt the plastic and and push it over to hold that circuit board in tight otherwise the contact isn't going to be good and that's all I've done was just fuse that down wipe it clean again just to make sure there was no dirt and debris in there just wiped it with some deoxid on the end of a Q-tip and tighten up the Springs ever so slightly just bend them upward a bit and put it back together and sealed it up manual tracking [Music] I don't know whether that music will pull up a match or not it's John Tesh you know the guy that used to host the TV show Entertainment Tonight like 40 odd years ago he's a musician and uh I guess Sony commissioned the music for this uh LaserDisc from John Tesh project but whether it's gonna pull a match or not I don't know and I don't want to find out and if it does I'll have to mute it but um anyway as you can see this machine is playing okay sharpness for the pitcher it's got a sharpness control you can probably see that when I sharp cutting that part down that's perfect I mean that slow motion is just it's just it's excellent not as good as the u82 because the u82 was smooth this does individual frames step step step step whereas the u82 it was actually smooth because this is digital but I mean you can't fault the pitcher on this machine so we're almost there we're almost there on this one I'm gonna deal with that idler and see whether I can get that idler to just be a little more sticky so that it'll rewind so if I hit stop see this machine doesn't keep the tape laced you can see it's slipping a bit there but if I hit rewind you see it's not going anywhere there's not enough torque you see it out of the clutch could be the clutch too one caution when working on this machine is the fact that it's got this big metal base that if you want to observe anything that's going on on the mechanism with the unit apart you got to make sure that this is not going to short out the board so we can put some tape or something over here just to our piece of paper or we can find a piece of plastic so here's the mechanism here there is a drive idler in here that doesn't appear to be spinning you see it seems to be just slipping so how this operates is when you're in a forward search and reverse search it's using the gears here The Idler is not engaged at all you can see it sitting in the middle hit reverse search it actually flips this little gear into position actually flips this gear into position and we go into play and then this gear is going to flip into position you see see the gear move maybe you couldn't see it from the camera angle can we see it now okay here's our gears these are the little torque gears for play and for uh search forward and backwards if I hit reverse search Watch What Happens here you'll see that the clutch will reverse and this gear here kicks into position to drive the tape reel backward that's why it's working and Rewind or search forward and backwards The Idler is sitting right here in the middle The Idler is not being used at all right when I select uh stop go back to play here when I select stop and now it's using The Idler to rewind the tape when I go into rewind you'll see The Idler will flip up here but the idler is slipping it's not driving the tape wheel so I gotta either find a new idler or put something sticky on there to make it stick I'm going to be really careful with these gears these these gears are the type that just fall apart you can already see the plastic is already discoloring these gears they used to be white and they've turned to Yellow they become a really really brittle and I just don't I don't even want to breathe on them because uh you know it might be better just to try to put something down on there I'm going to try some rubber renew just see whether putting a little bit of rubber Renew on the tire itself will uh give it enough grip that it will work as you can see it's dirty put the belt back on here and I'll just see if it'll rewind to make sure that the little tabs lock in here there's two little tabs that that fit in there these slots so stop the gears from turning too far let's just see if this will rewind now nope still we still don't have enough torque so I got the mechanism position I'm turning it on Rewind by manually here there's a bit of torque on here now let's try fast forward see fast forward doesn't have much torque I think the mode switch is out of adjustment by maybe one one tooth to get to the mode switch on this thing to adjust it is just the biggest nightmare because it's got a bracket in the way there's a screw under here this bracket's got to come out to get to it as does this heatsink again I think we'll take out this bracket first if I can see this is why you're seeing exactly why nobody fixed these machines when these machines were available nobody wanted to fix these machines because to get to the modes which you got to do this entire disassembly to get there because of how it's buried but I want to just check the alignment of it because it was taken apart and it was very possible that when it was taken apart the teeth weren't put back together weren't lined up properly so again ridiculous design and of course you can't run it when it's apart like this because it's not in a good position to try to run it once apart but now I can get to the mode switch foreign s use the same type of modes which is this but they didn't have all this extra Hardware that was in the way to uh access it I believe the mechanisms have been out of time the machine thinks it's in the stop mode now but you see this little little hole here that's supposed to line up if I turn the loading motor that should line up with that hole I think now the alignment is is correct so now I'll try putting the mode switch back in place without turning anything put the mode switch back in place and hopefully it will release the brakes because this cam here this is what this slide this cam slides back and forth this is what releases the brakes and the brakes are not releasing for the hubs sorry that's just correct this is a matching Mark here pointing over here and the positioning hole right there so that's pointing correct and on top here uh this little arrow points towards the what used to be a little indentation over there but that's correct so this should be in the stop mode now I put the switch back into position and we can see the little matching hole should be a little hole right over there too you see a little hole there and the other hole over here is lining up and this Arrow that is the stop position which is where I left the mechanism when I took it down when I had it in the stop position I have the cassette down because I was testing it so it's in the stop mode right now so now I can tighten down these screws again and start to reverse and put this thing back together and hopefully this will fix both the loading problem with the mechanism trying to load again because with the alignment off on the mode switch and the when it's in the eject mode it wasn't signaling that it was interjected it was trying to load it again so let me get the power supply back in and we'll put this board back in I say these are just a wonderful machine to work on and I'm being very sarcastic when I say wonderful machine these are my favorite VCRs well actually no I'm being I'm being sarcastic there my favorite VCRs are ones made by JVC of the old vintage which I refuse to work on because they're just a pilot crap although this is up there this is up there with all the disassembly you need to do to get at anything on this thing it's just a just a real pain in the ass to work on and as such they cost a little more money to fix and that's why a lot of people just say scrap them because they don't want to spend the money to fix these things and I quite frankly don't blame them just kind of go back in here as well sometimes just doesn't want to go down into position it's because the heatsink on the other side catches a wire and it kind of sticks it so you gotta um turn around and make sure you're not getting any wires looped around the heatsink I'll show you where it catches once I get this installed I'll put the digital board back in so we can test it again and see whether it's going to go into full Fast Forward and Rewind actually we can do that before I get to that point of taking the digital board this little Loop of wire here sometimes catches around the end of the heat sink here and stops you from pushing it all the way into place so you gotta make care of that sure that little Loop of wire doesn't get caught all right now I'm going to uh Power the unit up again let's put something in here to prevent this from short circuiting in the event of it where to move I am happy to report that the unit will now go into full rewind and fast forward if I push the fast forward button I have plenty of torque you can see how much torque I got if I stop the Reel from turning it actually stops the pulley so The Idler is in good shape rewind let's hit rewind and see what happens on rewind rewind is the same I can actually stop the pulley from turning so The Idler is good after putting the rubber Renew on there taking the sheen off that wasn't why it was sticking it was sticking was it just the brakes weren't being released because the alignment was incorrect for the mode switch which we've now corrected and repaired properly so now I can proceed to start to reassemble the machine and hopefully everything's going to work properly uh put the digital board back in like that I'm going to put the front face on because we had to pull the face off of it to do this as well I don't have to worry about getting paid on this one because the fellow that sent me this equipment has always looked after me he wants his equipment fixed and he's one of the people that actually appreciates that we can fix this old equipment so that's why I'm putting the effort in on this one that I didn't put in so much on the slvr5 because the the fellow that owned the slvr5 I made it pretty clear that he wasn't going to be spending a lot of money on it that's why it didn't get the amount of attention that this one has been getting today although this guy did say let him know it's worth fixing or not but I think we're going to have a good outcome on this one I can sense it now we're going to have a good outcome on this one foreign capacitors were not an issue on this particular model of the machine like a lot of VCRs use those crappy element capacitors I haven't had any of them fail some of the Mitsubishi's did on the linear power supplies and some of them did on the svhs boards they had a little cap fail I think it failed on all of mine I've done them but I don't know that it had we had the same type of problems with this particular machine I mean it's built like a battle tank this thing okay I gotta put front panel on the game this just Clips on somehow it goes on here somehow got to get everything lined up I guess it just Clips in like that oh great all right looks like that's clipped in yeah definitely I think just has to fit them just so then I can put the uh that's locked in place pull the tape off that I used Put on here just to allow me to operate it with some black tape in this side here all right let's uh throw a tape in it see what it does it should work and it does I have a picture let's check out rewind is it going to rewind and it's going to rewind give me a thumbs up guys give me a thumbs up be sure you like the video to all your friends subscribe to my channel I don't want to beg for subscriptions I don't want to be like those other guys but really subscriptions do help the channel out foreign there I sound a lot of bacteria and more and more communities are turning to ultraviolet technology to purify public drinking water supplies scientists are also excited okay I think I'm going to start putting this thing back together the bottom cover kind of locks in underneath the uh the front cover here so these tabs lock in so we can just should be able to just push this into place snap it in three of them and then the bottom screws and the bottom and the side screws should be able to go back in I already got the bottom on it now the sides on it or the bottom cover Let's uh try a super VHS tape the aquarium one I can rewind it a bit here but this is uh there is a Subaru VHS tape that was recorded off a LaserDisc we'll check all the features out here search forward that's looking good back to play search reverse pause jog shuttle one frame at a time one frame forward at a time one frame backwards at a time slow motion reverse slow motion forward gonna rewind this tape back to the beginning that's looking good how about fast forward fast forward looking like a million bucks too back into reverse or rewind that first time I went into reverser when the tape seemed just on lace properly that was probably just a delay in the mechanism reversing the item there's something from one side to the other for example okay Mustang video that was my old company before I changed the company name when I first started out because I drove a Mustang so I called it Mustang Video Productions so that was a crappy character generator on my uh probably on my Beta machine I think this was probably edited it looked like that it looked like the character generator from my slhf1000 anyway um can't uh play this music obviously because um is Andreas a Walden fighter playing his electric harp and I'm sure that his record company would have something to say about me playing his music but I can play the video and as you can see the video looks great as good as a PVS 350 was capable of recording at the time and this would have been a copy from that it would have been a direct Deb I think straight over to um straight over to actually yeah those characters are on the camera and I don't think it had a character generator on it but this would have been a dub straight over I wouldn't have gone to like beta and edited and then dumped it back to to uh super VHS this would have been a direct super VHS dub for sure to try to maintain the quality for second generation because I used to use this uh this tape that I've got here I actually made this tape up and we used to show this tape in the store that I worked at we used to show this tape like on replay just so it would show customers what the super VHS was capable of I went down to the aquarium and shot this and put it together and we had it playing in the showroom or on the camera display I think it was probably on the camera display show off what type of quality super VHS could deliver because back in the day while it was it was the best quality you could get for home video back then and then the high well and that in high ink High eight as well but I had a PBS 350 and then I got an S uh what was it a CCD V 5000 and it went back and did the same thing again that the aquarium with the v5000 I did it with the vx3 when the vx3 came out the three chip camera I went back and did the same thing again with the vx3 made a demo video for that at the Vancouver Aquarium and then I did the game with the vx1000 and uh one final time I did it with hdv camera and that's the last time I was at the aquarium so I'm just going to reassemble it and uh say thanks for watching and uh look at that tacky effect all that crap that was done in camera like really I mean it was so bad I'm sure there'll be another one here watch what it does it freezes and then you get a wipe really who does who uses effects like that I mean the uh the ccbb 5000 did it too but it did it with a little more finesse than that at least it didn't freeze a pitcher for three seconds before it started to do the wipe it did it relatively quick the dissolved the cross dissolve on the the v5000 was actually not too bad they did a hell of a lot better job than than Panasonic did with their PVS 350. big shoulder Mount camcorder that I sold years ago I sold it to one of the schools actually when I stopped using it I sold it to a school one of the I think I sold to the high school I'm going to check my uh EP tape I think I am going to do on this is I see that this has got the old black grease and it's pretty dry so we're going to remove that and I'm going to put some new grease on here because that grease is uh looking to be in pretty sad shape so let's just get some alcohol on a cue and we'll wipe off the old Grease we'll take off this old crap dried grease here that's getting pretty sticky and we'll put some fresh grease on here because I noticed that the guides a couple times seem to hesitate a bit when they were when they were moving so maybe uh sticking just a little bit down here so we'll just clear this out of here and we'll put some new grease in here and everyone asked me where I get Molly Coke well I don't all the stuff I got came with service kits from Mitsubishi VCRs this is what Mitsubishi supplied as a replacement Grease every time I bought a pinch roller kit it came with a pack of this Grease and that's where mine all came from and I'm still using it like all these years later even though I've been out of the business for well over 20 years now a little over 20 years it was 20 years ago in uh in July that I left July 2003 is when I left the shop that I was working for for almost 20 years 19 years and I think it was 19 years and nine months how long I was there we'll call it 20. not that it matters because I think my Severance for 20 years work at that place was like about a thousand bucks yeah we don't put a lot of grease in here just because too much grease will get the thing gummed up we just want enough that once the guide slides into position it will push it along the track and uh stop things from sticking they set the idea foreign and of course it's working you got the closed captions are on on here I got the captions set I guess when it's muted and there's closed captions on this tape so I can't show that obviously but the machine's working that's all I wanted to verify is that everything plays it plays tapes in SP and EP and the mechanisms now nice and smooth it's not hanging up on anything so now I can finish putting this one together and get it ready to ship back to Ontario where is it which is where this one came from same guy that owns this one has that Tea Act that had the bad motor and apparently you sent me a motor for it so we'll be we'll be doing that three-channel Tea Act again once I get to it that'll be one of the next ones I guess I do then I got a reel to reel that I've been I've been dragging my ass on a person owns us getting on the phone wondering when they're going to get the reel-to-reel it's like well they dropped it um I'm sure to laugh because um but machines that are dropped or whatever I think they said that they they stumbled with it or something in it hit a wall or something anyway it's been damaged and when anytime anything's got impact damage it's like yeah I just don't like working on stuff like that because you never know what damage has been done has been boards been damaged inside it you know um anyway I'm going to clean this one we'll clean the heads on this one and then throw it together and see nice and nice and smooth operation now that wasn't dirty I think he probably cleaned it himself the guy that owns this one he tried to repair it hence the condition of the mode switch on the bottom so I'm sure he probably cleaned the heads while he was while it was in there because I didn't see any dirt on them foreign big wasp in here I'll take a see look at that sucker that's the last thing I want to do is get stung I should get my my big fly swatter it's just like I gotta put batteries in it yeah we'll put some batteries in it we'll see if we can bite the sucker up if he keeps hovering around here I'm gonna put some batteries in it we'll light them up with this thing if the WASP knows what's good for them he will fly away it'll be wasp meets electricity Shield cover back in and the ground screw and the ground wire let's see all right this one's done just gonna throw the top cover on it when they end the video now thanks for watching we'll catch you in the next one bye
