'Missoula' Rape Victim Secretly Records Rapist Confession: Part 1

we've all seen the shocking headlines from campuses across the country tonight we hear from three Brave women who refuse to remain silent sharing their stories and the onerous steps they took to seek Justice we examin the hot button issue of rape on college campuses this time in the town of Missoula Montana Missoula the bucolic college town nestled in the Rockies known for two towering institutions the University of Montana and Grizzly football touchdown there was no other option for school for me it was I was going to be Montana Grizz Kelsey bnip was proud of her beloved Grizzlies a high octane division one team whose devout fan base is known simply as Grizz Nation the big Stadium all the people cheering I loved it and it is now ruined for me ruined because sophomore year Kelsey says she was gang raped by four Grizzly players at a drunken party inside this off-campus apartment I just remember the crotch being in my face and I said I don't want to and I pushed him away he grabbed me by my jaw and after that I blacked out she came forward with her story what do we want when do we want it now joining a chorus of alleged victims Nationwide sparking Fierce debate over America's campus Rape Crisis fueled by binge drinking and sexual aggression many victims say they feel the justice system instead of helping is failing them which may be why an estimated 80% of rapes go unreported I think it's absolutely terrifying to come forward because you're treated not like the victim how are you treated like it was your fault that the rape happened in the past 3 years there have been at least 80 reported rapes in Missoula at least 11 sexual assaults involving University students missoula's own Brewing rape scandal came to a head in 2012 when the justice department launched a federal investigation into the university and the local police and prosecutors high-profile cases in involving Grizzly football players and other um students made for scandalous headlines and the media pounced dubbing Missoula America's rape Capital there's Zoot toown from Missoula and grizzly the stories caught the attention of investigative journalist and best-selling author John Kau Missoula is not the rape capital of the country I wish it was I wish this was a unique problem it's rape statistics are about average or a little below CRA hour is perhaps most famous for his non-fiction survival Adventure classic into the wild which Hollywood later turned into a movie you are a big deal if you're on the Grizz but he's taking on an entirely different struggle with his new book missula rape and the justice system in a college town if this problem could exist in Missoula it could exist anywhere in the country and it does my book focuses on the victims their ordeal you know what they went through once you get to know the victims it's not it's a huge price these victims pay he did something to me that I have to work on every day and that I'm probably going to have to work on for the rest of my life life Allison hugot is the first of five alleged victims craar started profiling 3 years ago like eight out of every 10 college age rape victims she knew her as salent personally star Grizzly running back Bo Donaldson was a HomeTown hero and her close childhood friend and this is somebody who I looked at as a protector somebody who I thought would have protected me from anything she'd left Montana for college but returned home to Missoula for a party at Donaldson's house in September 2010 do you remember how much you were drinking it wasn't an excessive amount it was just more socially throughout the whole night I've been drinking so neither of us were in any condition to drive so at about 2: in the morning Allison decided to crash on the couch I woke up to a lot of pain and a lot of pressure and the sound of somebody moaning and quickly realized it was B and then I just shut my eyes and L there and that wasn't I don't even think a decision I consciously made and I waited until he was done and he got up and he literally picked up a blanket threw it on me and then pulled up his pants and walked away some people would say well why didn't you scream out why didn't you fight back this person is already willing to rape you it's hard to imagine what they would wouldn't do you know what they wouldn't do to stop you from tell people Allison waited silently until Bo was out of earshot and then frantically snuck out of the house Barefoot I ran out the back door down the driveway and then through this Alleyway up here she desperately dialed her mom for help and she just kept telling me to run I remember telling her that Bo had raped me and then I realized that he was chasing me and so I just kept running pushing him off of me Allison says Bo was begging her to come back to not tell anyone but he finally let her go it was such a State of Shock I just need to get away from him and to somebody that was going to get me to a safe place she went to the hospital and had a rape kit exam but she didn't want the police involved I knew that going forward with that would be a huge ordeal and him playing for the Grizz maximized it by 100 instead she decided to do her own detective work the morning after as miserable as she was she and her friend decided you need to get a confession you need to tell Bo that if he doesn't come and apologize tomorrow morning you're going to go to the cops so she invited Bo over to her mom's house and hid an audio recorder between the couch cushions I am so sorry we were laying on the couch I I was obviously completely fed up I've heard stories before about how hard it is um to charge somebody with rape and and in general I just didn't want to be questioned we were making out on the couch we were laying in on the couch together started doing stuff you know we weren't I never ever once remember ever making out with you or Bo eventually changed his story complete advantage of me I did the only I did the only reason I even felt comfortable sleeping there is because I've known you since first grade it's not me that I can't blame it on alcohol because that's not right it's something that I did I up you know that you tore her up inside do you know how devastating that is I said mother that kills me well that kills me Bo was emotional and Allison thought genuinely remorseful I just F killed myself that night I was curled up on the couch in the carport with my handgun in my hand you have no idea Allison made Bo promise to get help in return she said she wouldn't call the police if you had done this to some random girl and she walks down to the police station and tell them your your whole life is ruined though you're going to jail can't you just see the mailan another gley football player in trouble girl more than a year passed and she was still plagued by nightmares and anxiety I started acting crazy and my mind feeling crazy I wanted to pay people to hurt him and that's not my normal character she says she knew Bo wasn't getting the help he'd promised to seek so she finally called the cops they arrested Bo got their own videotaped confession and the wheels of Justice began turning very slowly if you didn't have two taped confessions how difficult the case would yours have been do you think very difficult it would be my word against his in the meantime the local paper reported on two other alleged incidents of rape by Grizzly football players including Kelsey bap's alleged gang rape I was in a relationship lived with someone I never once walked in there saying hi this is the first night that I've met you now please have sex with me Kelsey was celebrating the end of finals with drinking games at that off-campus party in December 2010 she said she took 8 to 11 shots of 99 proof alcohol within an hour and the next thing I know I'm in a bedroom I don't remember bits and pieces until I had a penis in my face she told police she pushed the first player away saying I don't want to but he forced himself on her what followed she says was a gang rape by three additional Grizzly football players is there a possibility that they thought you were consenting I don't know what they're thinking I'm not a mind reader do they know what I was thinking Kelsey went to the hospital hours later she still had a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit she immediately called the police but she says she was surprised by their reaction when I left the police department I walked away feeling like it was 100% my fault why they made it seem like it was alcohol that it it was my fault that I had drank too much and if I wouldn't have drank too much it wouldn't have happened and do you feel that's true now absolutely not alcohol didn't stick a penis in my face it was the people that did that when we come back nothing will stop Kelsey from pursuing Justice not even the cops telling her that her own words just might sink her case as for Allison she uncovers an explosive new detail she may not have been Bose's first victim I started screaming I was like get off me please get off me and I was pin down I there is no way I could get
