we don't you don't always have to eq and like compress every channel like usually the producers we work on it nfl or ableton or pro tools even you know in eq compressed [ __ ] already when we're making the beat a lot of sounds people use these days is already there you know so i'm gonna leave that one alone mike dean is a legendary super producer and mix engineer who's most notably worked with kanye west and travis scott in today's video i'm gonna be breaking down one of his mix sessions and the various tips and tricks he uses to make his legendary mixes for mike dean being a mixer means not messing with the producer's original vision this is why he almost always mixes out of the original pro tools session that the song was recorded in in this specific example mike dean is working out of a previous pro tools session so a lot of the effects and plugins that are on the tracks are not actually his the first thing mike dean does when he gets this session is start mixing the drums technology uses various different types of pool tech plugins to dial in the 808 go to plugin is probably that pultec plug-in the blue plug-in with just a bass knob and a treble knob use that on kicks and bases a lot i mean there's one built in the gain station actually [Music] [Music] [Music] i'm going to use the pull take section of this thing the base and the treble [Music] now take a look at how he balances the kick in 808 relationship both of them are soloed [Music] [Music] once mike dean sets his initial law and balance he realizes that he is possibly overwhelming his two bus and decides to create some head room by clip gaining down the drums let's clip getting down all this stuff about 6db give a little headroom so i can turn the setup after the steam uses the stock pro tools eq7 plug-in in order to shape the tone of the kick drum the stock pro tools eq7 a lot people make fun of me for that but you mean you're a legend you've got every plugin in the world but i just like the simple [ __ ] you know [Music] next mike dean deploys the bx2098 it's an emulation of the amec 9098 and uses it for tone shaping all the drums [Music] i love seeing this plugin so i have two of these actually in storage and takes is these old amex man it's like my favorite mic but i use it on like all the old ghetto boys stuff that i used to record pay attention to how my team will boost the frequency and then he'll back it off a bit [Music] watch how my team uses the low cut to cut out extraneous low end from the instruments [Music] [Music] analog summing is a big part of mike dean's rig in this case it uses the knee 50 60. mike dean claims to use it to give him that authentic neve sound whenever mike dean pulls up the output routing window in pro tools he's routing to his summon mixer mike has many different outputs labeled a b and c the neve is a rather the jumps to the 50 60 allow him to get that extra 10 take all the drums out to separate outputs just for shits and giggles you know makes it sound a little bit better [Music] output to the summing the kick is already going out of mono output in the 808 in addition to the 5060 mike also uses an additional semi mixer called the spl mix stream i'm gonna put the sample out of three mile mix stream i really like the widener and that here's a different swatch [Music] [Music] sure [Music] [Music] i'm gonna put a bhv3 on there i think it was already too wide so widen it a little bit [Music] watch as my team uses the bx2098 to do even more additional tone shaping [Music] that [ __ ] filter on there who looks like some other dudes that mixes it takes all the base out of us [Music] if you ever get your mixes back from a mixed engineer like that tell them a quick hat straight from my [ __ ] base like during the mixing process of the song my team actually retunes the 808s by ear using elastic audio in pro tools make a little switch up here [Music] [Music] what after mike dean finishes getting the beat mixed he then moves on to processing the vocals in this case the vocals are already pretty heavily processed so my team actually takes plugins off the vocal in order to make them sound more natural and correct some of the mistakes the recording engineer slash earlier mixing engineer made first thing i'm gonna do is turn off some of these plug-ins on the vocals i think we're taking basically everything off that they had we've been taking that off now let's take a look at the additional processing mike dean does once he's it through the plugins that the earlier mix engineer has used don't say you know me you better tell them i'm the only one who can hit it that way so how do you even trust these [ __ ] so what did you see in me yeah hey baby she wanted to see the d go bro trying to do the things that i do i'm the only one who can hit it that way so how do you even trust these [ __ ] so what did you see in me yeah inside i don't hear [ __ ] but the outside go through go [Music] continues to shape the tone of the vocal he then employs the acoustic of purple which is a pull tech plugin and i know that you ain't over me you play it all your friends reply to my stories like oh my god your best friend where the [ __ ] so she didn't like us when it starts [Music] how do you even trust these so what did you see in me yo hey baby she wanted to see the d [Music] if all i gotta do is me i'm doing it easily [Music] hold up whoa welcome to a message on my phone someone told me why i hit home yeah but it's alright cause you don't see the vision but you gon see this money that we throwing that [ __ ] was boring skirt up in the forehead oh say you know me you better tell them yeah that [ __ ] was boring skirt up in a they foreign pouring right now i'm going in you made me do that thank god i knew that you tried to play me all that just made take a look how mike uses this double effect which previously was on a different aux track and how he puts it on the vocal channel and blends it in to create some depth in the vocals she wanted to make it rain started pouring right now i'm going in you made me do that thank god i knew that you tried to play me all that just makes me it can never break me and i don't care about all them [ __ ] you dating mike thing then deploys the stock waves yes sir and it's safe to say this is his go-to de-esser as he has previous posts about using it [Music] and i know that you ain't over me you play it off yeah your friends reply to my stories like oh my god your best friend where the [ __ ] so she didn't like us when it starts she was just jealous that you be the star yeah do i miss you not at all yeah [Music] after mike dean gets his vocals in place he then moves on to the final mastering stage unfortunately his final mastering chain is in a hidden track and his process is still very much a secret however he does show his meters we do get a quick screenshot of the avid stock limiter which could be his final brick wall limiter he's going through a hidden track um here's what meters i use i can show you [Music] that my [ __ ] bag [Music] [Music] let's take a look at the comparison between the rough mix and mike dean's final mix [Music] [Music] the artist name the album name and the song it's annoying to find them in my itunes and like whoever you're sitting in the chat should know the artist name right here we are going to print this i'll turn off my mic let you listen to it all the way through
