I first bought this CD many years ago (shout out to the reggae specialist at Amoeba Records who recommended this "tasty" album).This album sadly isn't on Spotify nor is Jubilees of Zion.
The instrumentation first gets you in a trance, and then the vocals kick in from Vaughn Benjamin. What is this sorcery? Smooth, fast, confident, racing around and toying with the beats, a FLOW like I've never heard, and still haven't heard to this day. Not ragamuffin, not deep roots, a cross between the two.
The lyrics dense but melodic, making you want to hit repeat time after time. 18 years and thousands of listens later I still can't decipher some of them nor sing all the lyrics. What is he talking about? Stories from The Book of Enoch, ancient mysteries, African history, biblical stories, rastafari mysticism.
But the songs stay in your head like it's coming from a prophet. And it seems like the songs come so easily to them. It's just a flawless album and the one I come back to again and again. I don't think it can ever be topped. Midnite and Akae Beka continued and there were some great albums like Ainshant Maps but they never hit this high again.
RIP Vaughn Benjamin, thank you for blessing the world with your greatness while you were here.
Midnite doesn't get the respect and recognition it deserves. Goes for Akae Beka as well.
