>> WELCOME BACK. THERE'S A NEW DOCUMENTARY OUT ON A JOURNEY WITH PARKINSON'S, CALLED "STILL: THE MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE." TAKE A LOOK AT THE CLIP. >> HERE'S MICHAEL J. FOX. >> WHAT IS THE SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS? >> AND THE WINNER IS -- >> MICHAEL J. FOX. >> I DON'T BELIEVE THIS. THIS IS GREAT. I FEEL 4 FEET TALL. >> I DON'T GET IT. I WAS BIG. I WAS BIGGER THAN BUBBLEGUM. I WOKE UP, AND I LOST MY PINKIE. AUTO ANIMATED. PARKINSON'S DISEASE. I TOLD TRACY THE NEWS. IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH I REMEMBER HER WHISPERING. NO ONE OUTSIDE OF MY FAMILY KNEW. THERE WAS ONLY ONE REASON I TOOK THESE PILLS. TO HIDE. BUT AFTER YEARS OF HIDING WAS TAKING ME AWAY. >> PLEASE WELCOME THE FABULOUS MICHAEL J. FOX. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] THIS DOCUMENTARY -- >> AM I SUPPOSED TO STOP THIS? [LAUGHTER] GOT FOUR KIDS. THAT'S ALL YOU CAN GET. >> MAN, THIS DOCUMENTARY BROUGHT BACK SO MANY MEMORIES. >> YEAH. >> IT SHOWS YOUR ENTIRE CAREER, GOOD, BAD, INDIFFERENT. ALSO IT TALKS ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WITH PARKINSON'S OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS. THERE'S SOME HARD MOMENTS IN THERE. BUT THERE'S A LOT OF HUMOR, BECAUSE IT'S YOU. BUT WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS NOW? >> THE FILMMAKER, MADE QUITE A FEW FILMS, ACADEMY AWARD. HE CALLED ME, HAD AN IDEA OF TAKING MY FILM CAREER, TAKING MOMENTS OF MY PERSONAL LIFE, AND MATCHING THEM UP. IT'S EFFECTIVE. IT'S REALLY COOL. >> IT'S BEAUTIFULLY DONE. THE EXPANSE OF IT, BECAUSE THE FILM GOES BACK TO YOUR CHILDHOOD, BEFORE YOU EVEN MADE IT BIG IN HOLLYWOOD. YOU SAY YOU WERE A SMALL, SCRAPPY KID, WHO DROPPED OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL, YET YOU SOMEHOW CONVINCED YOUR DAD TO DRIVE YOU TO L.A. TO MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN, WHICH IS IMPRESSIVE IN AND OF ITSELF, BUT THERE WERE REALLY LEAN YEARS. WHAT STRUCK ME WAS THE SCENE WHERE YOU TALK ABOUT EATING THE JELLY, EATING JELLY, BECAUSE IT GOT THAT BAD, RIGHT? >> IT WAS GOOD. I LIKE JELLY. AT IHOP, DENNYS, THE JELLY AND PEANUT BUTTER. COOKIES CAME OUT ON THE WEEKEND, NO GOOD ANYMORE. EATING COOKIES. YEAH. I HAVE AN EXPRESSION, SOMETHING LIKE THIS -- >> WE EARNED THAT. >> I KNEW YOU AS A FAN. I GREW UP ON ALL THINGS MICHAEL J. FOX, SO SEEING THIS DOCUMENTARY WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, LIKE, RECAP OF SO MANY THINGS I'D FORGOTTEN ABOUT, BUT SPECIFICALLY I FELL IN LOVE WHEN YOU WERE ON "FAMILY TIES." >> YEAH. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] YOU LAND A ROLE OF ALEX P. KEATON, THE REAGAN-LOVING SON OF TWO LIBERALS. HE MADE BEING REPUBLICAN SO CUTE. YOU BECAME A STAR OVERNIGHT AND WENT ON TO WIN THREE CONSECUTIVE EMMYS, BUT NEITHER THE CREATOR NOR THE NETWORK, WHICH THIS PART I DID NOT KNOW, REALLY DIDN'T WANT YOU FOR THE ROLE. SO WHAT DID ALL OF THIS SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU, KNOWING YOU WERE UP AGAINST SO MUCH AND YOU NAILED IT? >> WELL, THAT'S THE STORY OF THE MOVIE. IF YOU WORK HARD ENOUGH, IT WILL HAPPEN. >> YEAH. >> WATCHING IT HAPPEN TO SOMEBODY ELSE, FEELING BAD FOR YOURSELF, GETS YOU NOWHERE. FIANCEE THING, GARY GOLDBERG, THE PRODUCER OF "FAMILY TIES." HE DIDN'T WANT ME ORIGINALLY. THE NETWORK HATED ME. YOU'LL NEVER SEE HIM ON A LUNCHBOX, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER SEE HIM ON A LUNCHBOX. >> AND THEN "BACK TO THE FUTURE." [APPLAUSE] >> YOU SAT NEXT TO PRINCESS DIANA AT THE WORLD PREMIER. >> I SAT NEXT TO YOU AT THE OSCARS. >> YES, YOU DID. THAT'S RIGHT. WELL, YOU DID ME A SOLID. YOU DID ME A FAVOR. I JUST ASKED OUT OF THE BLUE, YOU SAID YES, AND I WENT, OH, OKAY, THANKS, YEAH. YEAH, YEAH. [APPLAUSE] >> VERY COOL. >> THAT'S MY FRIEND. SO ARE THERE ANY ROLES YOU REGRET TURNING DOWN? >> A CHANCE TO WORK WITH YOU THAT I MISSED. >> WHEN? >> "GHOST." >> OH, NO! >> IT WAS GREAT. >> WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT, THERE'S STILL TIME. WE'LL FIND SOMETHING TO DO NOW. >> WELL, LET ME ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR WIFE TRACY. YOU FAMOUSLY MET HER. YOU'VE BEEN TOGETHER NEARLY 35 YEARS. [APPLAUSE] YOU MET ON THE SET OF "FAMILY TIES" AT THE HEIGHT OF YOUR SUCCESS. YOU TALK SO BEAUTIFULLY IN THE DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE EXACT MOMENT YOU FELL IN LOVE WITH HER. >> TRACY HAD JUST STARTED THE SHOW. WE WERE DOING A SCENE. THE COME BACK FROM LUNCH. WE HAD GONE SEPARATE PLACES FOR LUNCH. GARLIC BREATH. THIS GIRL FROM NEW YORK, SAID YOU'RE -- >> WOW. >> SHE'S STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL. >> BEAUTIFUL BABIES WITH THAT ONE. YOUR FAMILY IS GORGEOUS. >> YOU WERE DIAGNOSED WITH PARKINSON'S IN 1991, BUT DIDN'T REVEAL IT FOR SEVEN YEARS. THAT'S WHEN YOU WERE IN "SPIN CITY." WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO KEEP IT A SECRET AND WHAT WAS THE MOMENT OF CHANGE? >> I DIDN'T KNOW IF PEOPLE THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY IF I WAS SICK. A LOT OF STUFF TO MANAGE. MY LEFT HAND SHOOK A LOT. I DECIDED THAT WAS IT. I TOLD BARBARA WALTERS, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE, BACK THEN THAT'S WHO YOU TOLD, BARBARA WALTERS AND "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE. IT WAS AN INTENSE TIME. THE OTHER THING ABOUT BARBARA, I WAS THE THIRD GUEST ON THIS SHOW OF ALL TIME, "THE VIEW." >> WOW. YOU DO AMAZING STUFF, YOU KNOW. ALL THE STUFF YOU'VE BEEN DOING FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH PARKINSON'S SINCE THEN, STARTING THE MICHAEL J. FOX FOUNDATION, WHICH HAS RAISED NEARLY $2 BILLION, WITH A B, FOR RESEARCH. THERE'S BEEN A MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH RECENTLY. WHAT IS THAT BREAKTHROUGH? >> WELL, WE DISCOVERED -- THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON FOR THE LAST 10-15 YEARS -- BIOMARKER, A WAY TO IDENTIFY THE DISEASE BEFORE SYMPTOMS ARE EVIDENT. IN OTHER WORDS, WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED, THAT REPRESENTED 75% OF MY CELLS GONE, DEAD, ALREADY. IMAGINE IF WE KNOW THAT BEFORE THAT HAPPENS? THERE'S A CHEMICAL WE CAN EXTRACT, SAYING, YES, YOU HAVE PARKINSON'S, TAKE THIS, THIS, THIS, CALL ME IN THE MORNING, AND BE DONE. [APPLAUSE] >> AMAZING. >> ONE THING I WANTED TO SAY, TO ME YOU'LL ALWAYS BE THE MICHAEL J. FOX -- YOU'RE HILARIOUS, ALL THE THINGS, BUT SIMULTANEOUSLY I DON'T KNOW IF WE'D BE WHERE WE ARE WITHOUT YOU. MY MOM HAS PARKINSON'S. THE RESEARCH YOUR ORGANIZATION AND FOUNDATION HAVE DONE HAS HELPED HER TO STAVE OFF SYMPTOMS IN A WAY THEY WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN IF A MICHAEL J. FOX DIDN'T COME ALONG AND CAPTAIN THAT SHIP. SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU. >> YOU MIGHT AS WELL FIND SOMETHING GOOD, BECAUSE IT'S A BIG DRAIN OTHERWISE. I SEE WHAT PEOPLE NEED, AND WE THREW MORE MONEY AT IT, WE'D FIND AN ANSWER. NOTHING BETTER THAN TO BE IN THIS SPOT RIGHT HERE. >> WOW. >> WE ALSO WANT TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS, BECAUSE HE'S ABOUT TO GET A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. SO, YOU KNOW, THERE'S NO BETTER PERSON TO -- TO EMULATE THAN THIS MAN. HE'S ONE OF THE BEST PEOPLE I KNOW FOR A LONG TIME. YOU KNOW, HE DOESN'T LOOK AS OLD, BUT I KNOW, YOU KNOW. IT'S A PLEASURE AND AN HONOR AND A PRIVILEGE TO STILL KNOW YOU. SO BRAVO YOU. THIS STILL A MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE IS
