MG FEATURE RACE Grattan Raceway 2012 MG Vintage Racers

welcome to the vintage sports car drivers association vintage Grand Prix Oh cotton 2012 this is an mg focus event organized by mg vintage racers Groton Raceway and Brighton Michigan is a great track for these mgs very tight technical course with some camera blind this is a very diverse field of cars ranging from the 1932 m gj2 to mid-1970s mg bees so there is going to be a significant speed differential between these cars but it will be an exciting race the top ten cars are all within a second of each other and the middle pack of twelve cars are all within a second of each other the green flag is waving here we go 35 vintage mg race cars coming down the front straight this is the beautiful Scott Foreman's MTB as he weighs by John targets MTV David Conrad passing storm fields in the front straight at his mga this is manly forward in his Lester mg coming into turn one a very fast and wide turn this is Michael Barstow his beautiful mgtv david conrad chasing down as fellow Zapata teammate carl George around turn three a very difficult off-camber turn scott forman currently in fourth place Scott was the chairman of this weekend's event this is the view from Stan he's MGA as he come around the bowl turn eight Oh in-store field dives in under David Conrad and turn ten there's kind of a friendly rivalry between storm and the sapota guys now this is manly Ford coming into the straightaway this is about the only time these racers get a chance to relax it says straight away this is a very difficult technical track David Conrad's able to pull Stormfield down the Main Street returns the favor that's Richard passim family forward in his as a very fast is race back as Richard leaning is still in the lead and is pulling a pretty big lead right here on Donald Dickey in the number 99 MTV this is Dan Leonard in his beautiful 1949 TC special here's that middle-of-the-pack rivalry I was telling you about there were 12 cars all within the same second at each other in qualifying look at this little battle right here and there goes the leaders remain straight listen to that sound I love that sound who'da manly fighting that scary scott forman coming into turn three but John target has problems on target in the number six one two Akron Ohio 64 MTV hope it's not serious that's Brandon Bullock in the o1 MGD the video doesn't do it justice but this is a very technical track I walk this track the day before and ended up in the grass on two different occasions David Conrad still trying to get past Carl the MGAs aren't that big a carpet man when Carl gets on the track he can make that thing really wide not taking a very defensive line it looks like David might get past it let's see what happens looks like David Conrad just got past Carl but Carl's not giving up yet manly forward right behind him waiting for his opportunity really fighting that wheel this is gonna be a great race here we go again with Dan Leonard and this beautiful TC special if you want to see some fighting of the wheel you got to watch these guys in these t series like that now remember ladies and gentlemen this is vintage racing there is no award money involved in this these are just a bunch of amateurs out here for the love of the cars and we are getting some great racing out of here I think most people think of vintage racing as a bunch of old cars doing parade laps but you can see clearly here that these are not parade laps these guys are racing look at this is Karl and manly race to the jump this is a crazy little jump right here into an immediate downshift turn right to turn five this is a crazy track they would never make a track like this today but it is a great track for this mg event look at this Scott Foreman's closing in on the leader as Donald Dickey has the lead right now but it looks like Richard leanings gonna be able to take it back this is a great race at the front the top six guys are staying right together Richard leaning is in the lead again and it looks like Scott Foreman might be taking the second place from Donald Dickey here Stan Heath Stan Heath is such a fan of the mg that I don't think he can bring himself to passing Dan letters beautiful TC special I think he's just enjoying watching it back there become the leaders over the jump and Scott Foreman's really close the gap on Richard leaning look at this ladies and gentlemen the first five cars are all within a second of each other this is panning out to be a great race at this ng focus of there with Scott formers gonna try to make a move right here he went in wide and to turn ten but it looks like Richard lean he's gonna be able to hold them off this is a great race now as the event chair Scott could just radio in and disqualify Richard leaning but he's gonna race him fair on David Conrad told me that he really wanted to be the fastest mga at this event and Charles price and the 911 - is the last mga has to pass to become that but Charles is not going to give up without a fight look at Dan just really fighting the wheel and the TC special and it looks like Donald Dickie has taken second place again from scott forman this is really a great race for first place Charles price took the lead back from David Conrad but now looks like David Conrad has the line going into one look at that Donald Dickey is right behind the leader and look at that the top six are all still within a second of each other on this 50th year celebration of the MGB now they're getting in the lap traffic on a track as technical as that that could make for some very hairy racing and it's a great equalizer when anybody pulls ahead cuz that traffic can really slow you down in vintage racing it's the faster cars responsibility to make a responsible pass here from Scott Foreman Scott Foreman's trying to make a move on Donald Dickey and their storm and car enough storm and Carl's rivalry go back to the last focus event at Lime Rock when Carl barely beat storm in the focus event and there's nothing storm wants more than to beat Carl in this focus event that's Joe Lightfoot in the 169 MTV he has the distinction of possibly having the worst racing name Lightfoot and look at this battle for first place scott forman is really trying to get the line on richard leaning it is one to eight MTB the battle between one two and three has been intense this whole time it looks like Richard leanings car is faster but Scott's car might out handle him and here's storm and Karl again coming into turn eight the pole this is gonna be quite a battle right here look at how off-camber that turn is turn three it is crazy David Conrad's caught up to some of the MGBs that is a really fast MTA he's driving oh and here comes the leaders into some lap traffic some heavy lap traffic this could change everything right here based on who picks the great line sometimes this is just a crapshoot see what happens that's the leader in one to eight behind Dan Leonard in the TC special with scott forman tries to odd to hook I'm sorry Richard closes the door right there on Scott Scott wanted to take that and use the lap traffic to his advantage Richard was able to close the door this is a view from Stan's car looks like Donald Dick he's gonna get held up a little bit in the lap traffic his Joe Lightfoot pulls ahead and now this is David Conrad and sterling Heath ooh David Conrad hanging it out as he's trying to pass his Tennessee friend sterling sterling right here the MGB GT sterling may be the youngest driver in this field goes to University of Tennessee that's George Edney and the TD right there at Steve concen and the beautiful TD right there in Roswell Georgia John target has a good view of the race from the side of the road there as the leaders come into turn five look at that that's still the battle for 1st to 4th oh really still really close nobody has given anything on this race as the leaders are passing lap traffic it's Michael Barstow from the TD right there this could get hairy somebody's car was throwing up oil on Dan Leonard's camera and still Stan he just can't bring himself to pass that beautiful TC he's got Foreman tells Donald Dickey to pass them on the right so it looks like Donald Ickes smoked container might be leaking a little bit and look at this fight between Karla Storm it is still going this is a great friendly rivalry between Zapata and the Jersey Boys here come the leaders into turn three one two and three are half a second away from each other oh and Ted Hershey locks it up coming into five hang on ten here come the leaders over the jump look at that there is still a battle for 1st to 5th place in this race this is really getting intense this is not the place you want to be passing David Holmes lap traffic right there in the 137 MPA this is racing these guys are racing full-out this is not parade laughs this is a view from Carl George's car as he comes into turn three oh we got a spin allen Cossack right there at his MGB GT spun right in front of Carl and probably one of the worst places Oh and storm takes full advantage of a storm field passes right there that is how you take advantage of the good situation Carl had to check up for the MGB GT and storm took full advantage of that now it's up to Carl to pass storm back you know storm is just giggling inside his helmet right there and this is still scott forman trying to get Donald Dickey Donald Dickey smoke container it's still leaking putting up that James Bond smoke screen seems like lots of British cars have that feature Karl George in the 107 black in GA looks like he's trying to get storm back looks like he's gonna dive bomb I'm into one it's a race to turn one let's see if Karl can dive bomb him looks like he's holding off storm check oh and the storm comes in Karl gives him the line look at Dan Leonard just fighting that wheel on that TC special and it's fun to watch David Conrad comes over the jump and he is really driving that car there's Charles price the next fastest MGA trying desperately to get david here's Stan he looks tan just cannot bring himself to pass in such a beautiful ng oh look at that okay oh nice save Scott Scott almost lost it right there on turn three you lost a little bit of ground but it doesn't look like Donald hickeys gonna be a little faster on that yeah up close there that Donald's still right behind him followed closely by Gary Allen these guys know that they're about a half a lap away from the checkered flag really going at it it is great race to the finish Carl and storm are come to die they're getting the one lap to go signal as Carl's passing storm richard leaning leading the race almost the whole race there he goes he just takes the checkered flag richard leaning in first place scott forman in second followed closely by Donald Dickie Richard Navin Gary Allen Joe Lightfoot here we go David Conrad it's his MGA race to lose oh he gets squirrelly right there he saves it he barely hangs on oh that could that could have been awful but he holds on now let's see what Karl George can do if he can hold off storm coming over the jump into turn five storm loves this part of the race jacket he's really fast you see if Carl to hold them off inside here on eight the bowl the bat store might have the line it's catching them not can't pull them this is such a close race to the end and there's such good history with these two drivers they're really good friends they love racing against each other with Carl feed them last year at the Lime Rock focus event it takes a really outside line Carl takes the inside line look at this they're racing side by side with only two turns left this could go to anybody right here looks like storms gonna get them can Carl pull it Oh storm beats them to the finish line Carl beats into the flag stand wow that was a great race and a great event thank you so much to gratin for putting on such a great event
