Hanley ramírez lates things off the electricity here at Shea so close the first pitch strike something he did to only 3 of 15 batters in his last start well that's something he's definitely been working on is trying to get into that zone where he's throwing strikes Trachsel needs to be aggressive early in the count so he can go out of the strike zone when he gets ahead the curve hit that was a club save and a beauty so one spectacular out and here is Dan Uggla who like Hanley Ramirez whom he follows a prime candidate for National League Rookie of the Year honors the Marlins is not a half-a-dozen legitimate Rookie of the Year candidates one of them was supposed to be pitching tonight Josh Johnson who spun five shutout innings against the Mets last week but he's got a little tenderness in his forearm and is not pitching tonight another chance for Reyes a lot more routine so two out of nobody on well that beautiful play by race it sure something to line if you're probably going to see on October third or fourth for the Matt's turn and over the weekend Carlos Beltran it's display of throwing in Pittsburgh was just not to be believed doubled up Sanchez at first but also made some spectacular throws to second and third almost got Jason Bay on a play at third base that would have been up in phenomenal play and he just barely missed pulling it all well here's Miguel Cabrera second leading hitter in the league at 340 he is having a spectacular year and Faxon gets ahead of another hitter I don't know every time I see that list run I think five right-hand hitters and the top of the league never see that you're lucky if there's one out of five 1964 of the last time the top five hitters in the National League at the end of the year were all right-hand batters well interesting little sign early when you look at Steve Trachsel what do you want to see want to see the ball down who wants to see him throw strikes want to see him produce ground balls he's done that so far early in the game five pitches for strikes and two ground balls véra shoots one foul in tracks of the work from ahead in the count against a hitter who has owned him the Brera 4:19 with three home runs against ransom josh Willingham on deck and this cloud is in the mood to celebrate this is it a splitter two and two so do you think they're not going to take no for an answer tonight I think they are imploring their team to win this game tonight is fired up there are probably 10 or 15,000 more people here tonight than there would have been at the Mets clinched yesterday they're here for a reason [Applause] breanne tuna Cabrera steve trachsel get knocked out of this in the third inning of his last start against the Dodgers and that was eight days ago that's a guy who loves his routine but his history is with seven days of rest and more he does well we're just bout that ball off you see what Trachsel has done on seven or more days rest that's in his career and better than that as a meant as a met in nine starts four and three three point five six it has go better than fax his career number I think the number there is he has 17 starts on seven days rest of more [Applause] we're on close pitch so it's who I'd walk we'll settle the fraud back in its seats Willingham will step in Willingham is at five of those 25 home runs this year against the Mets only two other players in the Mets 45-year history have hit that many home runs against them as a rookie Rico Carney hit eight against the men's in 64 Mike Schmidt hit five in 1973 and not josh Willingham is at five breaking ball misses one of them well Willingham just outstanding as you see the Mets defense pretty deep against the power hitter the Willingham but he showed a great ability to nestle short kind of arms you know it's hard to get the ball inside on Willingham he and Uggla both Frank Jefferies arms yes that's right well dr. Willingham is that a terrific year with the bat as you look at Trachsel good changeup from tracks a lot a life on his changeup tonight so far and it's barely going Willingham was one of the Marlins who struggled defensively in the 10th inning in Atlanta yesterday and Justin waffle in the top of the 10th and lost the game Willingham and Reggie Abercrombie applied to make bad plays in the outfield Hanley ramírez any error in shortstop I mean you can't have a worse meltdown to that that's considering those games they lost against the Mets lace just the late the tough week for the Marlins but they've had shown a remarkable ability to bounce back especially for a young team I mean they would have every reason to have folded their tent after their experience against the Mets last week but they bounced back the very next game and beat the brave well the top good starting pitching all year long when you have good starting pitching you never get in one of those funds for too long one into the Willingham loses the cap catches the ball side retired Capra people by Ballentine and the Mets will come up 34 year old Brian molar making the spot start for the Marlins tonight here's the chef's defense lineup to face him and it means the eight line up all the Duke has done very well against his own team this year but all of those left-hand batters are thirsting the huts they face the right hand picture well not willing to face it right into picture by the right-handed veteran pitcher who they know and they've seen of course Brian bowler one of those guys that you have to have on your staff that goes between being a starter and a long man in your bullpen doesn't say anything against that role Brian bowler just lots of base runners though and he has a penchant for giving up the long ball 16 and 110 in this is his 19th start he's made a truly foundings he started early in the year for the Marlins but has been mostly pitching out of the bull pen with the emergence of their young starter Jose Reyes leads off first pitch ground ball and a nut look rose on Reyes one away and with the anticipation that you can feel from the crowd remnants lay on the foul atmosphere even though it's not quite sold out here that's sold 10,000 tickets at the end of yesterday's game you wonder whether the best buy the little overanxious is Reyes might have been there yes really is scary it's palpable the feeling here in the stadium since the met bands and they want this to happen tonight and you're right I think it sometimes makes you a little excitable as a player also lo Duca and a very good series in Pittsburgh one of the few who did he's got his batting average up to 315 that's now sixth in the National League and what's been fabulous to watch what will duke is how he's kept his strength late in the year well he made a comment and said that last year and I know you saw him at the end of the year he had pulled I think both hamstrings and could barely run the bases so just being healthy Hammonds legs underneath them this year I'm not talking about this but I think playing in New York City cannot let your guard down and I think this is a perfect place for him to play here a lot of sizzle on it so Ramirez had time to get over and make the play [Applause] well the Ford Marlins defense second-most in National League those areas that's going to happen when you have a lot of young players Carlos Beltran takes a strength Carlos went without a hit in Pittsburgh gold for nine in fact in the month of September he's just seven for 41 but he has been drawing a lot of blocks lately in fact even with that slump Beltran's been on base at least once in 22 straight game [Applause] already got his second-highest walk total of his career one of the two to beltron molar trying to have a good first inning which is he meet again later we got one here in my career i cooking ops go through the first inning without giving up a run it is just obscene how bad it done after a while and you have to try to fix it by warming up in the water something help you through that first minute was only starting once in a while like molar it's hard to get into any rhythm at all wanted to to beltron who's 7 for 13 in his career against molar the basketball too into it you see that basketball 86 miles an hour that's Brian Holden well what happens if you throw 86 miles an hour as you see Carlos they'll battle on deck you've got to be very precise due to the belt Ron and he struck him out with a breaking ball and so bowler puts a little mute button on the crowd which was so electric and now quiet after he gets the Mets on one two three scoreless here as we head to the top of the second steve trachsel on the hill as the Mets try and nail down a division and Gary and Ron during the break you know this crowd they've been electric and loud all night long and they took it up a little bit when they put a shot of Doisneau Sanchez on the jumbotron and the crowd acknowledging him here in uniform and to honors been here with the Mets since his season-ending injury in Miami he's been rehabbing and I spoke to him today in very good spirits and looking forward to celebrating with his teammates tonight I love the fact that you know in most towns you show them the setup guy who hasn't pitched in two months on the video board nobody would not only watch crickets to get nothing right yeah the beautiful hand for Sanchez to a note of Mike Jacobs who did not start any of the games against the Mets in Miami because the Mets started three left-handers it's been a struggle for Jacobs lately no longer playing every day and he's old for his last 20 it takes a strike to it life dick has 19 homers 75 RBIs fans found that very quickly last year if you put one in his real house he could park it you have to keep that ball up with Jacob yeah he loves the ball down in the strike zone if you can throw that high fastball by him to see his swing have a loopy kind of swing and this fastball out of the hands of Steve Trachsel running away from Jake [Applause] time okay the umpire down at third three and two kind of an usual thing right Gary is that you know that guy has a hole upstairs but you're a guy who only throws the fastball 86 or 87 miles an hour so that's a nice that you get that kind of reap from the scouts but can you do it because if you throw a split they hold it off the ground fastball fouled back I mean Traxxas stock and trade against the left-hand batters to throw him a splitter in that spot you know what I've seen from Jacobs's see Cody Ross on deck is that like a lot of young players this bat seems a little slow right now in September and that'll happen it happened to a young guy who hasn't played this many games in grant una Jacobs he launches that one foul Trachsel got two outs on the first three pitches he threw today this is more tracks less he's here very early today starting pitchers you see these fish come fried well we'll see it's now a game under 500 with yesterday's loss of Atlanta Jacob sits it in the air to right-center field Green has enough room don't throw it over he calls him all those sounds of run away so one out and nobody on time for the mlb.com SNY text pole of the day which meant do you think would make the best manager that's a good question clapping Floyd lo Duca Delgado interesting choices to put in the poll don't you think I think so like I volunteer my word yes yeah guys like that anyway well keep always wants the write-in votes oh god yeah he always wants to vote for E they can hide by Cody Ross anyway text your answer to five-seven 508 for each text to be entered into a drawing with two tickets to the first NLDS game at Shea standard rate messaging fees may apply it check with your carrier go to SNY TV for complete rules Oh Keith was beside himself one of those polls check swing foul by Ross when they asked who was the best Mets manager of all time and Bobby Valentine wasn't included in the four choices Keith was very upset a lot of success here from Bobby Vee so he should have been one of them I remember that pole also I think Davey got the most votes right in that poll I think Willie was second I'll soon they forget about the great Gil Hodges yeah and the curve ball misses to lost two and one Coney Ross said that three home run game against the Mets he has to 7 RBI games this year 1 for the Dodgers early in the year and 1 against the Mets last week - seven RBI games he has 43 for the season that's up to one year Ed Lynch was pitching for the Mets Jeff stone was there outfielder he had two home runs off Ted Lynch in one of the early April games went back in September he had three home runs [Applause] back them down a piece of it and balantine made the play out wrong well Trachsel follows through towards the first base side that's why this ball chases anyone just able to get his glove up in time and protect himself and a nice break off the glove and straight to Valentin so two out nobody on and Trachsel will take on Alfredo amazig Oh he's been playing most of the center field for the Marlins that is an area where the Marlins have gotten to upgrade in the offseason phanzig is a utility infielder who's been playing a lot of centerfield well they thought Reggie Abercrombie was going to be have one of those rookie seasons like a lot of their young developing guys are having for Joe Girardi but he did not he's really struggled this year little tapper Wright was playing in which was the right place to be to throw out a message Assad retired two three inning for Steve Trachsel and the bench will come to bat on the bottom of the second with no score home second and Inc Carlos Delgado leads off against Bryan Mulder who needed just nine pitches to get the meds out in the first [Music] one another delgado 38 home runs a hundred and eight RBIs not just six behind ultron for the club lead which is amazing considering he had really a two-month slump it's this 120 long to centerfield amazing to going back and he runs it down run away amazing and not playing quite as shallow as we've seen a time you know earlier in the season Gary he was playing very shouts a lot of Mets a lot of hits I think that just comes with playing all season out there he's a great athlete and to be able to be an infielder and go out there and play centerfield he's done a nice job there's David Wright and as Chris Connor noted earlier Wright has not hit a home owned here at Shea since before the all-star game phenomenal 26 games 85 in bats he's hitting 306 here in shade during that stretch it's not like he's not hitting naki employed by Ramirez and the overhand throw gets right to away the bats have struggled in Pittsburgh with their battle of Buner have been retired Padres feast the dodgers for the second straight day yesterday for Mel sledge with the game-winning hit to put San Diego in first place Tigers and White Sox of key series for Chicago's tonight and then you see the Phillies remember a Philadelphia loss would clinch the division for the Mets as much as a Met win would so the Mets need to play fast now just from a player's at that point okay say it's the eighth inning here and the Mets are winning in Philadelphia loses their game what do you do I think you have handshakes on the bench that kind of stuff but you wait for the outcome of the game hopefully you are winning the game but I think it's very uncomfortable it's a very unnatural not to win it on the field but if you if that happens then save flinch in the eighth inning and then you win the game do you celebrate as if that game was the clincher I think you would celebrate I think you'd go out on the field and you would celebrate with your teammates with the pitcher who closes out the game absolutely when I was with the A's in 92 they clinched on an off day and I was my family still lived here in New York so I was flying home at the time and found that the news on an airplane flight on a red-eye the Floyd swings and misses did you order a glass of champagne for yourself no I just remember someone had one of those now it's antiquated but one of those kind of TV radio things and I was able to see the end of the game I had to feel felt strange then the next day you know I was home in New York and I didn't know what to do it just hung out with my kids like I usually did what did your teammates do on that off they had a party in Oakland at one of the local Jack London Square bar slash restaurant and they had a blast they told me but they probably didn't spill champagne on each other no no spilling a champagne the center-field off the battle Floyd and a bazooka there and Brian boulders retired the first six men so the Mets offense was struggled in Pittsburgh struggles the first two innings here at Shea Miguel Olivo lifts one to right field and Shawn Green is right there one pitch and one out you notice in that connect fall Steve Zabriskie said finally the reason he said finally is because you guys waited just as long as this team has to claims someone with a Keith Hernandez shirt never now that game in 86 that dwight pitched that complete-game effort Dave Magadan played first base I think he was three for three in that game with a few RBIs and Keith really just played the ninth inning because he was not feeling well but he wanted to be on the field to celebrate of course Ryan bowler a notoriously poor hitting pitcher thanks Mike 86 let's go back 69 Gary Gentry pitches a complete game 86 doc pitches a complete game 88 you pitched a complete game for the clincher baller pops up and Reyes has the angle [Applause] what's supposed to be quite that way but it is the second out now I've seen him a couple of times she's been doing a little that snatching on the pop-ups and that one there he got his glove right in the front of his face and all these variants so I guess my question was what are the odds of a met pitcher pitching a complete game for the clincher I think the odds are very very small because the history has been is that the guys with this bullpen you don't need to pitch a complete game but in saying that because they've been playing that 88 game when you guys have had rain outs in Florida everyone comes up to me and their first question is hey you pits the whole game like like nine innings it's very funny how people just don't see that that often anymore and that's such a thing they can't believe younger fans have no idea I mean he used to be you it was assumed you were going to pitch nine innings if you didn't you had failed in some way you know who pitched metal relief in the 80s guys that weren't good those are the guys I pitch middle relief you had one or two guys who trusted out of your bullpen but the assumption was that the starter was going to finish fullest and you start out with just look at this stat complete games first start just radically different now here in 2006 yeah it's just you know and we would have loved to have had this bullpen here with the Mets I mean they're just unbelievable but for those numbers from 1980 to 2005 25 years ago we have one-sixth the number of complete games on the Cubs now opening up a big lead against Jon Lieber at the Philly to hopper for right praxis I retired seven Oh third inning Sean Greene leads off against Brian molar the other team has had a hit Mensa looking for their first base runner Sean just 2 for his last 20 and the day off yesterday [Applause] it takes a strike you know you're talking about those postseason tickets I didn't realize how many friends I still have here in New York City as they're coming out of the woodwork in the next month my friend if the Mets are still playing you'll have plenty more fouls it off well the one thing about postseason tickets is that even the players have to pay for them different from the regular season is it going to be like gold and a couple of weeks gets it for the fourth time in his last four games and arguably the skinniest met I don't know I mean there's not much of a target there to hit him as bowler just completely misses that strikes on this he's got that fastball grip try him put that ball inside on green and not even close the Mets have their first base runner and Shawn's got to wonder what the National he's got against him he's never been hit in more than 11 times in a season in his career so he's never been a guy who's been a real target and yet he's been hit four times in the last four games now so here's balancing the stretch for the first time this is with a breaking ball Valentin thrilled to see a righty on the mound because he's just not hit it all from the right side of the plate now he gifts the bathroom his better son I just batting average the right-hand hitter is down to 202 for the season [Applause] remember him earlier in the season Jose Valentin as you can see the numbers left-handed and right-handed stark contrast Murrieta Nevadans Chris Camden jump and he batted lefty and hit a home run off Chris hammers to centerfield what if he ever considers [Applause] balantine with the first enemy game on to one homer on the next jump out to a two nothing lead [Applause] is this crowd of annelida party [Applause] is he considering ever just going up there left-handed all the time and an exclamation point that beautiful left-handed swing number 16 - Valentin - nothing bats crowd came they came to they had been back on their heels a little bit over the last [Music] but Valentin brought them all out of their seats in a hurry this crowd is playoff type tonight and word before the first pitch and how many two-run home runs get a curtain call in the third and the third inning balantine having a curtain fall before the spotify 20 of those seven RBIs of two innings down second strikeout the bowler it's the first out there you can't laugh that you should cause a bouncy what a year he has had this year for the mats at second base right on the first pitch he saw O'Brien bowler tonight [Applause] it's amazing a go to spring training and you spend six weeks there to answer you hold certain questions about your team and sometimes over the course of the year you come up with an answer that nobody ever considered and that's Jose Valentin I was cast Matsui it was Chris Woodward it was Brett thorn for goodness sakes it's spring training this year and nobody even gave an inkling to the idea that Jose Valentin might be the Mets second baseman for the long haul we'll have to hurry andreas pulls into second base safely the pressure that Lance's speed puts on a defense right on top of Brian Bolland the most exciting player in the game today running inside on that big slide he made that throw get some information where it's supposed to go I'm not sure he picked up where the ball was at first but he had plenty of time to make it the second he'll get credit for a bunt single and then an arrow on Moeller allowing them to go to second [Applause] [Music] now lo Duca and the Marlins have to be wary about Reyes stealing third with one out 57 steals on the year for Reyes [Applause] one a total of dukkha all lined out to short his first time up Reyes not as comfortable still in third as beltron is but he certainly has the speed to do it and he'll do it occasionally but Ramirez keeping a close watch on and changeup in for a strike always more difficult to steal off her veteran pitcher also molar giving multiple looks at Reyes at second base that is what really guys who steal third from second are looking for a guy who just gives them one more every single time they're out there [Applause] Moeller nicely by Reyes nobody had a better pick off move at second base than you did what was the key well the key is you have to have a middle infielder I was lucky enough to have Kevin Elster he was just an amazing shortstop amazing quickness for his size so T&C gotta have a good infielder and you gotta have someone who wants to do it a lot of infielders are not comfortable with picking guys off second one into Tula dukkha tough man to strike out and now it will be respects the dash to the bag of reds just [Applause] well that's a great shot of that you'll see daylight as soon as you see daylight you turn and throw and the daylight beam between the shortstop and the baserunner Jose Reyes so you just see a little line in there you turn and throw the faster the runner the earlier you have to throw on daylight [Applause] Miguel Olivo has got a great arm and he made a perfect throw Reyes didn't think he was out great army also picked this ball out of the dirt and made this throw look like Reyes slid into the lake of Miguel Cabrera see where his hand goes he's safe yeah he got tagged up on the arm while that hand was already in yeah his hands in there Doug Eddings the third-base umpire missed that call I wonder if Eddings was looking at the hand that hit the foot as LaDuke aground 1 2 Cabrera and that'll do it for the meds in the third but the Mets grant the lead the field team left-handed and a Tazo for him in his 16th home run of the year and the Mets have themselves a 2000 we go to the forum looking for the clincher [Music] steve trachsel stick to a two nothing lead dan Uggla will lead off for the Marlins of the fourth inning bounced to short his first time and cracks it with another first pitch strike boy a tractor looks nice on this extra days rest that bodes well for him if he gets a playoff start because that's what happens a lot of times in the playoffs you have a lot of days in between starts and the curveball in for a strike Trachsel had two bad starts back-to-back not only did he not pitch we'll only seven innings in the two starts but the men stopped scoring for him he strikes out lavas flutter his first strikeout of the night well nice movement on this ball down from Trachsel you called it right Gary that split finger wall comes tumbling out instead of shooting out of your hand and just great pinch in 2006 Hyundai in the Madison Sports Net New Yorker teaming up to strike out cancer for every can the Mets pitching staff registers on day the medicine sports net New York will donate $25 to the hope and heroes Children's Cancer Fund go to WWF and heroes org Cabrera first pitch swinging and Valentin throws a not two man down so not only is Trachsel taking care of the Marlins he's taking them here at the Quigley economically and you know his last start Gary he went through the lineup the first two innings he was fantastic just like he's is now they gave up that four spot in the third but looks much sharper tonight never got out of the third inning against the Dodgers meanwhile I wonder if the Marlins have a little bit of a hangover from their game yesterday his josh Willingham and he takes a strike well you said about the Met hitters that maybe they're a little more excitable here with this big crowd and the excitement I'm sure that the young players for the Marlins feel that also there's a strike oh and to joe girardi after the game yesterday in atlanta was disconsolate and said it was our worst loss of the year which I guess goes without saying when you're up the tent that you move Oh into the Willingham just a little oh okay that'll be one thing to have to address right it'll be their bullpen in the offseason because they've really had problems out there and they're out field deeper yes which is also a major contributor in that law remember the Willingham coming into the season was supposed to be a catcher slash outfielder Miguel Olivo took over as a catcher and Willingham's been playing exclusively in left field but he's not a particularly gifted outfielder lines one into left center there's the first hit of the game for the Marlins that'll split the outfield doesn't go to the wall and Willingham cruises in with his 28th double of the year we're talking about before he's got those short arms so it's hard to get that fastball inside this Trachsel tries to throw this two seamer run it in on Willingham stays over the middle of the plate but when you have short arms Ron Cey I remember in the 80s guys they really are able to pull them in and hit that inside pitch a lot better than those guys those long arms the long arm guys have the prettier swing so they do like up Mike Jacobs it's got a very pretty swing but sometimes a little slow a little long this swings a little long Jacobs flied to Center his first time up and Trachsel just missing it's almost a catch-22 to guys like Mike Jacobs where does he get his power from that long beautiful swing where does he go through those droughts of old 420 because for that long beautiful swing Jacobs also a catcher coming up through the Mets farm system and he's a little challenged at first base and hey look around these Marlins and they've got a little difficulty on defense sometimes listen it's a great sure sure and seen that one before Gary Cohen Ron darling Chris Connor with you from Shea Stadium in New York the Mets trying for the clincher tonight back before the home folk and they've got a 2 nothing lead as we played the top of the 4th 2 and 1/2 Jacobs and even Miguel Cabrera a guy who has played shortstop and he's played the outfield has settled in at third base which is his favorite position but may not be his best decision so they've got some figuring out to do but they have certainly made enormous strides far more than anybody could have anticipated this year - Jacob oh that's date to the peace now though you want offense more than defense on the other chapter playing left field a middle infielder playing center field another catcher playing first base those are the things that are going to happen bans rubbing up with two strikes thanks a lot exactly York a corner kind of guy but he gets sick of looking cyber time second strikeout for crack soils and strands go ahead onto the bottom of the forum - nothing New York I can tell you what time it was when he got the final out Wow because that's part of Lindsey Nelson's famous call at 9:07 in September 24 1969 you know we made the final out I do know who made the final out that someone is managing across town Future New York managers we're pretty good at making final outs of big net game Davey Johnson made the final out 1969 World Series the flat ball to Cleon Jones Joe Torre at the final ground ball and the Mets six nothing win 69 against the Cardinals Piast Davey he'll tell you he just missed it too well as far as last doubts go the ball Piazza hit to end Game five against the Yankees that one extra base hit now just one shy of a Mets club record well we've seen it all season long this changeup from Brian baller stays up in the strike zone out the way from Beltran and if you throw the pitch there you are in trouble because that is his sweet spot she drives up ball in the head of a Mexico doctor on now 8 for 15 in his career against bowler there you see extra-base hit just one behind Hojo drudges that 17 years ago here's delgado flied to Center his first time up McDonald's exchange up first right Carlos Delgado last year a Florida Marlin after spurning the Mets efforts to sign him as a free agent coming over in the trade from Mike Jacobs and it has been the deal that sealed the Mets lineup has one to fear curveball for a strike going to Wow my aren't quite right artist to do that you know it doesn't do that anymore you were double-jointed I was double join it now anymore though it was close to three thousand innings I've got a nice little bow in my right arm now took the piss out of it - baffled and once said to me I think it was around 90 or 91 he said boy you know you're not throwing as hard as you used to you know that split fingers taken away your fastball like yeah I mean put finger also got a world championship you know it did all right in its day fastball misses like Steve stone saying you know he dude that he could throw a season four at the curveballs and win 20 games but he wasn't going to do it much longer right at the end of his career David Wright on deck that's looking to add to their two-nothing lead here in the fourth and that will advance the runner Delgado is beltron moves over to third goes reductive out for Delgado and white will try to run right and right that was the home run derby right on the left is a keeping track the other right brothers the infield comes in David with a hundred and ten RBIs he pops it up Jacob says well the right can't get the run in from third it's left to flip Floyd with two away flip flied to Center his first time up and took the lead in the third on Jose Valentin's two-run homer and Steve Trachsel has been terrific so far and now the mess trying to get him some more runs something they've generally been pretty good at this year when they were working on all cylinders clicking on all cylinders they would get a lot of these two out kind of RBIs David Wright wasn't able to come up with the hit or the sacrifice fly to drive in beltron and then the next guy would pick him up and I think that's what it lineup has to do and the Mets need for Floyd to click because he's a key part of this batting order at its best now they've got four innings six that green hitting seventh then if either one of them is at full strength getting the way they're capable with Valentine hitting eight this is an awesome lineup to take into the postseason but neither Floyd nor Greene has shown that they're operating at full strength - and wonderful and it makes you wonder whether Willie would give any thought if both of them continue to struggle just starting any Shabbos more lasting village when we go to the postseason the only problem with starting Chavez did you lose him off your bench because he's such a viable player but like in yesterday's game when he had the three hits he's just produced all season long and it's great outfit yes look thought that pictures inside discusses it with Dan abuse Lilley every day has been saying I have things I need to look at we have things we need to figure out but I'm not going to tell anybody about it before we figure those things out you see that Billy is getting trounced we're intuitive Floyd but the good part about that is that that games on the top of the fourth and this games at the bottom of the board but as long as the Mets can stay ahead in terms of the inning and that's good Aramis Ramirez has two home runs in that game for the Phills who started John Lieber but he's long since departed a molar a lot like Trachsel when he has players on base he really slows down his routine bring it to the Floyd and he strikes him out with the changer third strike guy that works around the leadoff double from Delft Ron's on the fifth to nothing New York straight over the top right good fastball good curveball that was his work he sees a 1969 I actually gets ahead of Cody Ross as we go to the fifth inning that's that Seaver Guzman Gentry Don Cardwell Jim McAndrew sounds like a big hang with him for all the other teams as they had an amazing record that year Denise but the shout outs I think that you were tremendous amount for a pitching staff as they were heading down the stretch in September then one incredible day that I don't think it's ever been equalled I'm not sure it ever will be the Pirates in a double-header they won both games one to nothing and in each game the pitcher Koosman and Cardwell drove in the only one Wow oh it to to Ross bounces that splitter bori Ross has already been with three teams this year as you look at amazing odd started with the Dodgers and tore it up in spring training we saw him him so monstrous all wrong they got traded to the Reds and then on to Florida oops that one shallow right-center belt raatan and he runs it down get a long way to get that fly ball for the first down oh there are your wildcard standings in the national league right now and with the Marlins having stumbled over the last week they need every game yeah I still think that it's going to be Philadelphia in that wild-card because they have good starting pitching although not tonight would leave her down eight to nothing there you see what the teams involved in the wildcard have left and really no advantage in terms of home road or opposition's record among the team's leading here's our brand of America and it takes hi and of course what that means if the Phillies win it on I think we all agree that we think the Phillies are going to win it that would mean that the Mets would not play the wild-card team in the first round they played the division champion with the lesser record which right now would be the West chimp Padres of the Dodgers but the Cardinals haven't played so poorly down the stretch there's no guarantee it's gonna stay that way it looks like they're closer Jason Isringhausen out for the year is hat head did he take the ice cream out of those Cosmo more I'll put them together don't want to imagine yet with the Isringhausen out of course that means that grated looper is now the closer for the Cardinals and you could see Braden looper coming to Shea Stadium for the first round of the playoffs trying to save games in front of his crowd would that be some iron the three one that were best as if the best led the padres you'd have that interesting matchup perhaps of Florida against Piazza in the wrong uniform us well the one thing with the when you get with the Cardinals Padres is that they have one outstanding starting pitcher who's going to get two starts Peevy of course for the Padres who was a kind of tough year but he is just a guy that can literally shut you out strike out 13 14 batters and the same for Chris Carpenter who's really got hot here in September now Peavy of course has got to survive the clincher this year that's what last year he got hurt when the Padres clinched the division in the dogpile went out and pitched the first game of the postseason against the Cardinals and at the leave early because he was hurt Penza contrives wonder right green over two down so two out at nobody on here's what the Mets have done against the potential playoff teams they could face the first round it's hard to get a feel because you just don't play the team's enough anymore and then of course the question becomes doesn't really matter yeah remember you remember of course 1988 I forgot that entire year and when ever gone let's beat the Dodgers 10 out of 11 out of year and what I've always said done didn't really mean a thing that's the doctors were a team of destiny that year they had orel hershiser having the year of his life and Kurt Gibson having the year of his life Miguel Olivo flied to right his first time and takes a curveball for a strike I mean they won the World Series with Mickey Hatcher in the lineup and I know Mickey and Mickey's great it was a great bench player but the Dodgers just Orel Hershiser decided to take over September and October that year and he did and then he can throw it like social for good night hey listen there the Mets had a chance in Game seven I pitched poorly so bad and that was so shell-shocked after the game I remember getting on the team bus and my family was on the team bus and walking right by them didn't even know they're on the bus but that's all shell-shocked I was and I think we were as a team [Applause] well I think that if I'm not mistaken after everything that happened in 1987 that kept you guys out of the postseason you thought that 88 was going to be a continuation of 86 we had a peel window I believe 86 87 88 should have been the next time only one championship for those three years and that was a disappointment I know for the guys that played on our team while a ball held the sweat good fastball by Trachsel inside tying up Olivo well the guild Olivo has walked only eight times this year it's a 5-4 the right of David Wright side retired what two three inning for Steve Trachsel he's only allowed an you want to hit through the first five innings as the Mets go for the question well that's that was involved right about the time the Mets clinched their last division title right that's that's a wild here and those long sideburns that's more 69 yeah more 73 73 yeah that's right all the players at the long sideburns including the ground or launched rusty stop shot green leads off in the home fifth inning check out the Amtrak pitching line Steve Trachsel has been phenomenal early bowler in a spot start where Josh Johnson who's got a little tender forearm he's been okay except for Valentin to Omaha right at Dan Uggla three retired one away well the fans here at Shea have come ready to celebrate tonight we were told that from the time the game ended yesterday in Pittsburgh to the time this game began the Mets sold an extra 10,000 tickets which is just unheard of long days you can tell that these bands want to invest themselves with the Mets party hands Valentina's hold on it's a difference in this game and here is the Coors Light full glass that came in the third inning 16th of the year for Valentin and a curtain call to boots if you're a player and you're in a situation like the bets are in tonight and the crowd is filled with electricity the way this one was right from the start do you feel that oh absolutely absolutely I think that the Cure the starting pitcher [Applause] if 17th of the and it's three nothing New York [Applause] two cars in one night from San balancing yes the Mets fans are jumping around tonight that was a bomb off the bat of Jose Valentin second one 19th time in his career balancing is it two or more home runs in its game wanna stop chests relegated to they are chilling everybody's doing a good job of it with most they Valentin tonight [Applause] and Trachsel has a base at the right Ross thought about trying to throw mad at first at Trachsel hustle down the line [Applause] [Music] this is sealants basic breaking ball from burglar steve trachsel look like he knows what he's doing this he goes the other way for that breaking ball to right-field 6/10 of the year for Trachsel [Applause] you're talking about filling the energy you feel the energy and I think the the curtain calls are not only because they're excited but not only because their home runs but I think it's also a culmination of enjoying Jose Valentin all season long meanwhile the Phillies put it down eight nothing against the Cubs going to the bottom of the fourth and I think every med fan would prefer that the Phillies win that game yet so the Mets get win and celebrate and not have to worry about any other circumstances Reyes had a fun single his last time up hopes that one foul [Applause] [Music] the Mets own this town in the 1980s they're trying to win it back [Applause] that's the second out but baseball teams can have an enormous effect on a city go back to 1969 the catcher John Lindsay was the mayor at the time and he was in the fight of his life for re-election the Mets shocked the world by winning the World Series one people credit that with leaving Lindsay to win a three-way battle and get reelected then here well that's the kind of thing that can happen to teams like that of course the people who rooted for the 69 team had to go through all those losing seasons as the seat of champagne is on ice 62 to 65 you are a bet man they became the amazing Mets and similarly Met fans who suffer through the lates means of early eighties and watch that team bill different because it was a three year process [Applause] in the 86 championship and I think this team has a little bit of that in the sense that by rewarding Reyes and right for those contracts the times fans that we are going to be a team that is going to be a consistent winner for years to common fans love that they love when a team invests for when the ownership and and the Mets invest in their team success the team over the course of time you know the next five six seven eight years not just building a team and bringing in free agents to at once it's trying to win consistently of course that's how you win the town back from the team that has won consistently over the last and all fans who uncle see a team that not only successful majored level they love following and see them come up and make their way there dicta grounds one to Cabrera and he gets the force to end the inning but the man sat on Jose Valentin with his second home part of the game and sings take mass transit - che is the series with the Marlins continues tomorrow Wednesday and Thursday nights at 7:10 then the Nationals comes in New York Friday for a four-game set tickets to potential mint postseason games will be available for purchase exclusively through random on line drawings go to Netcom or a loss vets comment and register it today he's been around for all the Mets championships Steve Trachsel has been brilliant so far and it's down stuff a three nothing lead as we go to the 6 J sin' wood will pinch-hit for Brian Moeller leading off in the sixth inning what is 36 years old he recently got his first hit in the big leagues in over seven years previously played for old led back in the late 90s el Pinto the lefty up in the Marlins bullpen this is Jason woods 43rd major-league game he's played 1785 minor league in that my friends commitment don't know how those guys do her hey Donna from my first bus ride when I was in Tulsa I said this isn't gonna work for me I need to get up to the big leagues this is tired it's not easy members of Tulsa Drillers gene had a bus that they had morphed into where he could move the seats around it became bent so the guys could sleep overnight on it I joined the team in the middle of the year after the college season so of course I did not have a bed so I had to stay up and play I learned how to play parts that summer with the coaches didn't sleep a lot did you know popped up Valentin retreated called off by Greene there goes the capital Green's got the ball one away well nowadays you not only get guys who spend year after year in the minors but they go to clean Rio Taiwan and Mexico and they play in independent leagues and there are a lot more spots available for guys who just don't want to give up I was offered a contract when I got out of college to play in the Japanese league and I really considered it I thought it might be a great experience but I just thought at that time that I would've been blackballed if I don't want went to Japan instead of joining finally now those things those things happen you talk about Jason would almost seven years in between hits the longest had been Warren Cromartie now Warren Cromartie correct me if I'm wrong came up with the expose all that time was he in Japan then is that why when he came back after right yeah I mean there been players from the US or the Dominican who've begun their careers in Japan probably manual I believe thee manager for the Philadelphia Phillies had a most of his career home runs we're hitting the Japanese leaves Allatoona Ramirez [Applause] I mean you had guys like Manuel met pitcher the tall guy here at Killman he went over a Japan have had a number of her successful years after they played in the States but a Timo Perez Robertson could know these guys played in Japan and Grimaud beer is down looking third strike down and Ramirez lingers to talk about it with dinner DeMuth when a guy is pitching like this he used the term that he is dealing and steve trachsel is dealing both sides of the plate moving this fastball inside and out and what I like is when Trachsel has his good games to me he uses that fastball he's aggressive with his fastball and he throws it for strikes he doesn't pick around the corners so 200 nobody honors dan Uggla bounced to short and struck out tonight this is not even as sharp on this is I'm going to get this over first strike get ahead of the hitter uncle lifts it down the right-field line cutting across as Valentin but he can't get to Valentin it's not everything but sweep the pinna chills time being helped him to his feet that's the least he could do because he says to pick up his hat all the time right field only when Sean Greenspan is gonna start soon all I know is every time it comes off he makes the catch so that's a good thing [Applause] oh it took the huh flow so third nice easy huh one two three and in for Steve Trachsel he has one hit the Marlins over the first six innings the mess of a three nothing lead this is the last night when your ice cream might melt this up gonna get a little cooler starting the bar for us written Yelp it though it takes over the pitching for the Marlowe Pinto it's done a nice job for them one of the few guys out of that Marlin bullpen that's done a good job you see those batting averages against part of the batting order for the Mets we'll see how they fare against this particular left-hander the Ultron turns around to bat right-handed takes ball one Ultron has one of the men's five hits a long double to Center his 79th extra-base into the season just one shy of Howard Johnson's club record and going into the final two weeks of the year many club records are with that breach of beltron runs scored look at delgado on deck he is 126 3 shy of the record comes have added a run to make it 9 6 overfilling like their planners Wrigley Field with the window that's a bandbox the Philadelphia it's a new band box in the National League Steve Trachsel pitch the best game of his life in a clincher in 1998 doing one to Beltran now we've seen Steve through a couple of one hitters as a med but here he is in another clincher and pitching another Jim when he pitched that one game wildcard playoff of the Cubs in 1998 as Beltronics blimp fell he held the Giants hitless for the first six and a third in [Music] outstanding tonight that Steve Trachsel been so far going after his fifteenth win you know this Mets classic site they mentioned eighteen years ago we saw that final out when I pitched here I'd never seen that game until this year really yeah I mean after Pedro's game the other night he said he doesn't watch the bad ones he only watches the good laugh absolutely who wants to see a pitch poorly well what were you watching no I just yeah well you guys had enough rain outs or rain delays in Florida have beltron drugs another walk the Pinto walks the first man to basin check out the Hyundai in-game box sports in hosts a Valentine's night on the offensive end two home runs second time this year has had two home runs in a game the pitching part has belonged to Steve Trachsel this Pedro will go back to the mound on Thursday night in the final game of this series mouths in the newsroom the other night some of the people are asking what do you remember about that 1988 game I said well really want to know yeah I was over four had two strikeouts and I popped up a bunt that's what you remember that's what I can remember from that game typical pitcher all you care about is your headaches now that you remember the games when it hit home runs and back-to-back starts I do remember those games I was thinking about it the other night because you Pittsburgh had a pitcher but believe his last name was yeoman right and one of my home runs was off Floyd Yeomans who pitched for the Mets and then was traded in the Gary Carter trade so much all expose a couple of veterans getting ready for another round of postseason play one-on-one to Delgado [Music] and that's a certainly fortified that starting pitchers who've been through the postseason Wars and that's important because there's nothing that prepares you for a postseason start other than starting one and very few have been more successful in the postseason than Orlando Hernandez and what I mean by that is that not one prepares you for the tickets you leave the family that wants to come in and watch the game because family doesn't really think that it's a big deal you know you just pitch in the game right so let's go have lunch I don't have lunch thinking about the game and all those things that are off the field really increased during playoff time and that's the thing that you cannot prepare for Delgado goes down swinging for the first down and of course you have so many more media to deal with you deal with them differently it's nine guys at your locker it's an interview will move the much different kind of environment once the page turns to October yeah then the guys who are playing that's no problem the everyday players but sometimes you have some guys in the locker room who are not playing FCU's as Jeff fantasies to call September call-ups as Pedro is getting ready with some goggles it's wearing goggles to a champagne celebration fair it's not fair I mean part of the fun is having that champagne sting your eyes right you should take it like a man and take the champagne in your eyes because that is the best feeling you're ever going to have even though you're in pain the best feeling you're ever gonna have even though you're in pain it's good Ultron gets back Jacobs thought he swiped them but Jim Joyce I guess felt he missed the tag Girardi is going to come out dog at the call well Beltran caught sleeping a little bit here what Jacobs is saying is that belt side slit into his foot and never least the bag until he had applied the tag in a very frustrating 24 hours or so for Joe Girardi a horrible game yesterday so hope you got that hand back to the back well some first baseman will put their footing from the bag on purpose Mike Jacobs did not do that his foot was just there but quick way to stop that if a first base was doing that slide feet first that'll stop it he'll never do it again one-on-one - right well I mean obviously Pedro's been through the champagne before and doesn't want it to stink Chris if wanna sign says it's got his goggles he doesn't have to wear swimming goggles and everybody's safe I'm not sure if Cabrera thought he had that ball but it was lying behind him on what otherwise would have been a short double play that ball is hit awfully hard and I think he just tried to block it keep it in front of him but he was not been able to it'll be an error on Cabrera and the Mets have two men on forklift Floyd [Applause] trying to land to a three nothing lead Floyd is flying out the center and struck out [Music] [Applause] you know who needs those goggles the hardest-working man in show business Chris cotton as he's going to they're gonna flick some pain on Chris cotton with the champagne I think wonder if he knows what he's getting himself in about I don't need anything go in there just get soaked tough guy wait til that stuff gets with your eyes I mean prevent it from happening nothing even if you were a schmuck gonna pour it down your neck anyways you're gonna get wet incidentally I was just down there there are 25 cases of champagne outside the Mets clubhouse right now 25 cases I don't think they're gonna run out well the ice has been laid on the champagne that means it's officially getting close sixth inning there we're a happening ahead of them that's a good thing and cliff bounces one Jacobs can't get a face hit here comes belt right around third Ross's throw will go to third and it's for nothing New York [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well this is a great sign not only that's a base hit from cliff Floyd also not because it's an RBI situation but it's off a left-hander Pinto and cliff Floyd stayed right in there at that ball through the hole and by that time Beltran Easley scores that's a hundred and twenty-one runs scored for Beltran that leads the league and is just two shy of the Mets club record mario's Shawn green and it takes the fastball for a strike Shawn was hit by a pitch and scored a run right at second Floyd at first in one away mitts now with the for nothing leaders that bound the sixth [Applause] whatever I see that bubbly on eyes that can only think of Frank Cash's famous words when one of the pitchers relief pitchers an 86 dumped a champagne autumn his famous phrase was the ones that do the least seemed to celebrate the most you know I was talking to Tom Glavine earlier in the week the first day I think that the bets could have claim and I asked him what it was going to be like for him here after all he's he's at 14 Division title is or however many he would he had eleven eleven the Braves and and he celebrated Division Series championships and LCS championships in one World Series championship he said with Atlanta obviously the the biggest celebration was the first one in 91 there's a double play ball to Uggla Ramirez throws it wide but Jacob stayed on the bag for the 463 double play the Mets tack on a run helped out by an error will go to the mound for the seventh all right Matt here we go to the seventh inning Steve Trachsel working on a one-hit shutout as we check out the Toyota nationally scoreboard Braves leading in Washington you've seen the score in Philly Houston trying to keep their very slim hopes alive and st. Louis with a magic number of eight for clinching the Central with the lead it's still in the race for the National League wildcard three and a half pack big game in LA tonight Padres with Peavy Dodgers with penny migrants have taken two of the first three in that series to go up by a half a game Randy Messinger up in the Florida bullpen as Miguel Cabrera leads off the seventh San Diego has owned la Tess 13 and 4 it's a very low pitch count for Trachsel working in the seventh - in London Cabrera mrs. standings in that National League West final meeting between the Padres and Dodgers tonight could well be the defense will be playing one of those teams felt the first week in October to a to the Cabrera weather as division champion or as wild Willie Randolph is talking today about who you play in the first round having a major impact on how you structure your roster where she could change your roster for each round in the postseason within limits and to that end Lamont Castro the Mets are hoping we'll be ready to play in the postseason maybe playing in an instructional league game or two by the end of this week and they very well may rejoin the beds next week on the road instructional league of course where you go down after the seasons done your minor league season and work on some of those tools that eluded you during the season we used to call it in struggle league once go down there to work on something that they had trouble with during the course of the season where's the minor league season being over there's no minor league rehab games to play in last his village hoping to be part of that postseason roster and you have to believe that once the Mets get this clincher out of the way the village will see vanilla playing Tom the last two weeks to get a handle on whether he should be on that postseason roster well it's to his advantage because of the way the Mets have played against left-handed starting pitching that he's going to be given a look because we want to have a right handed bench off right-handed bat off that bench foul ball off the bat of Cabrera and then there's Andy Chavez who has only been the Mets best hitter against left-handed pitching the entire season every day nd just an amazing season for him you know you get the guys it certain parts their career and he always thought he was a leadoff kind of hitter gonna be an everyday centerfielder he was not back a couple of pegs because of his experience of Washington in Philadelphia and now resign himself probably this summer the spring that he's going to be a bench player to the Mets and he's probably having his best year as a I call her a utility starter because during the course of the season he started a lot of games got over 300 at-bats which is more than a utility guy generally done this is the tenth pitch to Cabrera and he fouls off another one Trachsel who had not thrown a lot of pitches coming into the seventh inning is throwing up last year Andy was Gary there's no other way to put it with the Nationals with the Phillies and he is having a heck of a time Cabrera lines a base hit to center so on the 11th pitch of the at-bat Miguel Cabrera has himself another hit this is 180 fourth of the Year vote in our mlb.com SNY text poll of the game which meant do you think would make the best manager next ABC or d 2 5 7 508 write-in votes not allowed that's nice that they include a Tom Glavine because usually polls never include a pitcher as a for as a future manager how many former pitcher managers can you name know to come to mind off the top of my head Tommy Lasorda in Dallas Green great Miller tried didn't work out so well it's been a no this hit return manager Larry Dierker right fine manager when he yeah there's just not that many Guillermo Mota up in the Mets bullpen Trachsel now up to 90 pitches on the night josh Willingham the batter and Trachsel falls behind it to a No becoming so easily for Trachsel tonight he just gave up his second hit of the game both Peterson Willie Randolph though having a keen eye on the sitting do not want to let this game get away willingham a dangerous center or murd in all three games against the Mets last week in Florida two one Gary Cohen Ron darling Chris Connor our producer Greg picker our director Bill Webb with you from Shea Stadium Mets taking their fourth crack at clinching the National League East the first before the home folks it's been an electric night at Shea the pitching of Steve Trachsel the hitting of Jose Valentin front and center but now Trachsel struggling a bit here in the seventh inning gave up a leadoff single to Miguel Cabrera and now behind josh Willingham three and one you see Rick Peterson on the phone you know I was going to say quietly but maybe not so quietly hermano de has really started to get some important innings from Willie Randolph three one two Willingham Diebold I hope everybody did Mona has been nothing short of spectacular since shutting a Cleveland uniform and putting on Metzger ignited Day and everybody appears to be okay down with that line drive landed one happy kid good to celebrate but gets right back on the batter Cabrera at first three and two with nobody out don't expect him to run [Applause] that's the first down well no it's it kind of off the end of the bat kind of almost like a changeup coming out to him so one out and one on here's Mike Jacobs who's old for two tonight and now hitless in his last 22 at-bats this another former met break out of a long slump yesterday when Xavier Nady finally broke kind of an old 421 I'm sure that maybe had mixed feelings about the Pirates sweeping the Mets over the weekend because if the Mets had won one of those games he was invited to the the party not in the clubhouse but later on pulled down to first past the diving Delgado Cabrera to second he'll stop there and the Marlins have two men on so Jacob snaps out of that old 422 by grinding one past Delgado for a basic we see Cabrera did a nice job of the race younger fielding Carlos Lovato did not get a good look at that ground ball as it beats him and goes into the outfield and here comes Willie Randolph and he is making the side of the bullpen and he's going to get Trachsel out of there before anything bad can happen he wants Trachsel to leave on a good note that's a great point Gary because he's had two on it starts he struggle good to get the chairs from this cloud [Applause] and for steve trachsel 11 always felt the lump this year that's a great bowl fans out in droves hoping that twenty years in a day after the 86 Flint receives trachsel's effort will be enough to put the Mets over the hump in O six this first started in 1980 in Philadelphia yeah because you remember back in the 70s as recently as 1986 a lot of times fans went over one on clinchers will that all stopped when Frank Rizzo for a set the horses on to Philadelphia and 80 in that has become standard operating procedure fence no longer storm fields after clinchers is just too dangerous for everybody involved well and I know his Cody Ross comes a bat I know Frank Cash and was very upset in 8th and 86 because of the state of the field after the fans were on it you know it makes it difficult to play on it Cody Ross up against Guillermo Moana and he takes that changeup for a strike while 1969 the fans tore up the field three separate times Eastern Division clincher the LCS and the World Series and it was tough getting the field back in shape but you know there was 69 there was something very innocent about the fans charged in the field I mean I can say that because I was one of them I was 11 years old while pops it up infield fly rule should be called [Applause] charge the batteries out there too but by 1973 things have gotten a little bit more vicious a little bit more violent there was a little more vandalism involved rather than his innocent celebration and things only got worse over the course of the 70s with incidents like that and and finally a stop was put to it and I think now there are very few fans who would even consider running on the field if the Mets clinched remember in Chicago and the 70s they burned the disco records night and the old Comiskey in Chicago and that turned into just pollination they had to forfeit the second game of a doubleheader that was in 79 disco demolition right here's a musica with two out and two on [Applause] Guillermo Mota is not enormous pitchers hands he is a pro basketball forward just in the baseball uniform that's what he is you know he's listed at six six but his dad next to him he looks taller [Applause] well it's like a culpable in his hands first I can change that that's good [Music] it's change-up it's the same speed as Trachsel and I'm going to start his fastball look at that grip can't even see the ball on his hand you're right except wanna play two ball [Applause] to you think that part of the successes you see this that change up just off the outside corner some of the best success Guillermo Mota had look apology - Saskatchewan I would think that they that is not good difference for him also he has traded written approval for the Dodgers to the Marlins two years ago lift it to left [Applause] side retired Mona does his job seventh-inning stretch diamond shape [Applause] Randy messenger takes over the pitching for the Marlins and the first man he'll face is Jose Valentin is looking for his third home run of the night [Applause] he got a standing ovation as he came to the plate messenger just another one of those Marlins relief pitchers that have had a tough year this year that high here a 6.5 7 twice in his career Jose Valentin has hit three home runs in a game [Applause] he's already had to curtain calls tonight bangs that one awfully beau basketball adjusted over the middle of the plate illegal to the shot it was not what messenger intended I went to yomo Mona's gonna get a turn it back okay when you have a 6.57 array that just doesn't happen by accident you know that's from making mistakes Oh too messenger fans Valentin who will get another ovation as he heads off to the dugout a good breaking ball on the hand of Randy messenger good overhand curveball when you're ahead in the count you want to expand the strike zone great job of throwing this on the dirt great stop by a legal blockage well Mota had been on deck I think somebody made up that's terrific that's outstanding they even got the phone number right that's right Aaron Tom and getting ready Ricky ledee bats for Guillermo Mota this night to see Ricky pick up a hit in Pittsburgh it has been such a rough stretch for him but he banged a double off the wall on the ninth inning yesterday let's pick them up after the Dodgers let him go so Mota faced two batters retired of both and Alvin will take it over in the eighth and you know so much of the Mets this year has been about this spectacular bullpen and I was talking to Billy Wagner about this when we were in Pittsburgh how that bullpen has actually improves and Sanchez went down Ramirez with a 360 guns down with a two away second off the Jeep upcoming schedule final seven home games of the year three with the Marlins port with the national and then the next time event will be today after that will be for their first postseason game his Reyes and a bunt single in three trips [Applause] and it takes a strike but Billy was talking about the way Aaron almond has stepped forward and how everybody else has fallen behind him and it really has been spectacular to watch [Applause] I know a closer they really appreciate that guy that bridges the gap to them to get the ball to them and and appreciate his efforts to curveball of Reyes has this 180 third hit of the year what happens for a lot of young pitchers as they fade in the minor leagues get away with throwing this curveball because young hitters have trouble hitting the breaking pitch they don't have the command to be able to throw it in the dirt like he did against Jose Valentin is LaDuke oh no Wagner said when he was talking to Omar man died before he signed with the Mets Ian Omar we're talking about the composition of the bullpen and Wagner said that he said to Omar you need three closer you need the seventh inning closer and eighth inning closer and a ninth inning closer and and he said what you just said a closers only as good as the guys around him [Music] [Applause] all of dukkha never been in the postseason and six outs away from it now and I'm sure if it gets there his thoughts will be with his mom whose initials he farms in the dirt and puts on his shoes before every game Dukas mom Malusi passed away a number of years ago before she could seen him play in the big leagues but it was Lucila duco home balls batting i as a kid tossing pinto beans to him in the backyard popped it up and shallow left field Hanley ramírez is under it and the side retired we go to the eighth inning been seeding six defensive outs to pop the champagne six crowd here at Shea six outs away from a celebration and ends with a four nothing lead as we go to the eighth and Aaron Hyman holds the eighth but we talked about him before last inning just what a great job he's done ever since Doisneau Sanchez we saw earlier in the game went down Highlands just in nails as they would say nails didn't he play centerfield he did play centerfield Miguel Olivo old for two he's flied out and grounded out Steve Trachsel went six and a third allowed just three hits and walked only one trachsel's in line for his 15th win and you know if it comes to pass how fitting Steve Trachsel has been a men since 2001 as you look at that last pitch Jamo levo nobody has been here longer among the current Mets nobody has been less respected than Steve Trachsel but he's persevered and what a job he did tonight one on one to a level [Applause] change up a great weapon for Hammond one and two well think about Trachsel is that if you said before the season you're gonna have a picture coming off major back surgery and that he was going to make every start one of the few starters who's not missed the start and when you're 15 ballgames that would have been you would have taken that no heartbeat [Applause] factors earned-run average coming into the game was five point one seven that's the highest it had been all year but with his outing tonight he got it back under five to four point nine six and that will look a lot nice and form on the statute [Applause] one two two Olivo [Applause] what we were talking about watching games in the past if I were Steve Trachsel and I know he likes to watch a lot of tape I would get this game and I'd play it the night before his start in the playoffs because that's how sharp he was how aggressive he was about triple barrel action as a bull pen grow string he doesn't even get a mound the guys who are not going to pitch tonight getting their work in Dave Williams my string and Dave Williams Lieut shallow left center and that will fall in for a base hit for Olivo and so the Marlins have their fourth hit of the game it comes leading off in the top of the eighth now let's look at the results of our mlb.com SNY text poll of the game which meant do you think would make the best manager lease Glavine by a whisker over a lo Duca well I would like to throw officially throw Chris Wood where its name into the hopper Chris Wilbert and Jose Valentin I think Jose Valentin would make a great manager who knows the game Valentin is already a team owner that's rakatans down in Puerto Rico he said it's great I could play any position I want it's like the guy in the lottery commercial except these a little or talents but Joe Borchert the pitch hitter now you're right balancing Woodward I think a little dukkha will make a great management someday if he wants to do it those catchers they really know the games they have two quarterbacks on the field as you might say and it's firing I love that yes a little bit like that guy Joe Girardi rardy has done a remarkable job this year we'll leave it back next year that's a whole different question wart repulsive at Delgado's got this one gets the force way [Applause] particularly goodbye Delgado a nice play the short hop he is he got up quickly made a perfect throw to get the lead runner and Reyes with that strong arms able to get it back to him in times to get Joe borchardt nice play by Colonel stok dotto well after watching Jacobs balls go by him in the last inning this time not screened by the runner and he was able to make that backhand play two out of nobody on his Ramirez and the Ramirez over three you don't Gary there's certain things that happened my summer here doing the games that remind me of the mid-80s this crowd is abilities - now they'll all stand up Chris we stopped on to the Marlins it's almost like you just want to go straight to the next inning you got working thomas-john takes ball 1 belts on with a double and a walk tonight and he scored his 120 first run leads the National League one on one forty six thousand seven hundred and twenty-nine what on your schedule look like a run-of-the-mill Monday night [Applause] purr-fectly has it's all played out [Applause] nobody on the field wanted to get swept in Pittsburgh but now they're getting swept away with the passion of their van by Rhys off 2 & 2 [Applause] the MVP talk has died down around beltron and he couldn't give a hoot the deep left-center field Willingham has [Applause] logon demesne calm now for your post season ticket purchase opportunity tickets the potential Mets postseason can there be available for purchase exclusively the random on line drawings get the Mets da Morelos Mets dot-com and registers today that is the scene in the Mets clubhouse with a plastic draping is already down at Guillermo Mota is helping now wait a sec he's doing it all tonight is that against some kind of is that a breach of etiquette I would not do that I think that's bad karma got a loan for three I mean you know the stories about 1986 when they had the plastic sheeting up in the Red Sox clubhouse here at Shea and they had to rip it down expeditiously they had t-shirts on their chairs well though Bubba is six-six he's probably the only person who can reach high enough to good point especially with those chairs already tucked away in the lockers along with everybody's belongings lutely they got the champagne strategically located at the corners of the compound so everybody can reach where they're working that used to be my locker you get attached to a locker you really do is that the same plastic sheeting they used 18 years ago well I'll tell you right now it'll be a great celebration but that carpet tomorrow morning will not smell so fine certainly 88 was not the last time there was a champagne celebration in this ball pride that was in 2000 Delgado swings and misses Mets clinched both the National League Division Series and the National League Championship Series here at Shea against the Diamondbacks and the Cardinals that I should say against the Giants and the Cardinals that year Billy Wagner told me in Pittsburgh that he wanted to be at the bottom of the dog pile [Applause] Billy might we'll get that wish good breaking ball by Chris freestyle let's see if he went I think he gets the benefit of a call there from the third-base umpire Doug Eddings David Wright on deck [Applause] into short right field where the rover Dan Uggla throws out Delgado two away your AOL game summary and two names Valentin Trachsel brilliant the Ultron has chipped in as well and the Mets three defensive outs away from a nationally each I don't want a better high-speed Internet do you belong at AOL and this game is a happening ahead of the game in Philadelphia and they'll have to play nine full in Philly so unless this game bogs down and you see the score there that should be done with this before the Phillies are done with their game Mota back on the bench after work done you bring the staple gun widow right takes a strike well there can't be anything better than being traded from a team that is the second division club and coming over and being able to celebrate like this as Yamamoto will one-on-one to David Wright gets cheered for the pickup we know what that man can do in the playoffs he's contemplating a return to the postseason where he made his name two years ago with the Astros [Applause] up the middle and Wright has a face first of the night for Dave at the 8th of the game for the Mets you know as an older player what you start to reflect on when you are on a night like this except to reflect on you know this might be the last time this happens you know I mean you really want to take it in it might not happen again for you can never predict future success the Floyd as an RBI is signaled tonight 1 for 3 and he pulls it right at Uggla that'll do it for the Mets in the bottom of the 8th and now Billy Wagner will get set to take the mound for the ninth three outs from a cloture [Applause] you don't Gary I did not miss [Applause] how do you keep your emotions in check if you're on the mound we prepare for this your whole life playing in front of family and friends when your teenager a couple thousand of the minor leagues popped up on a night the Mets have broken a franchise record for attendance in the season it sounds like 400,000 here of shed Joe Girardi couldn't care less about the Mets Clinton his team is in trouble see [Applause] it's not a safe situation for Wagner the boy sure feels like what does that room [Applause] for those guys and for him I'll say Valentin's six years ago but in a postseason series for the White Sox [Applause] well you know it's an electric game when the opposing team is losing four to nothing and every single member of their team is on the top step of the dugout trying to take this all in hoping that someday they go through this Raimundo Cabrera the center fail [Music] it's what these guys want for all one - Josh Lily ham don't fail Floyd the members show 4th 2006 nationally East champions [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause]
