the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit today as a church we celebrate the feast of our lady of sorrows calling to mind the great gift that the blessed virgin mary is to us and reminding us of the faithfulness we are called to have in our lives especially during those moments of the cross and those moments of sorrow and so as we prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries let us call to mind our sins i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy let us pray oh god who willed that when your son was lifted high on the cross his mother should stand close by and share his suffering grant that your church participating with the virgin mary and the passion of christ may merit a share in his resurrection who lives and reigns with you and the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen amen a reading from the letter to the hebrews in the days when christ was in the flesh he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his reverence son though he was he learned obedience from what he suffered and when he was made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him the word of the lord thanks be to god save me lord in your kindness save me o lord in your kindness in you o lord i take refuge let me never be put to shame in your justice rescue me make haste to deliver me save me o lord in your kindness be my rock of refuge a stronghold to give me safety you are my rock and my fortress for your name's sake you will lead and guide me save me o lord in your kindness you will free me from the snare they set for me for you are my refuge into your hands i command my spirit you will redeem me o lord o faithful god save me o lord in your kindness but my trust is in you o lord i say you are my god and your hands is my destiny rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors save me o lord in your kindness how great is your goodness o lord which you have in store for those who fear you and who wished for those who take refuge in you you show in the sight of the children of men save you lord in your kindness [Music] blessed are you o virgin mary without dying you won the martyr's crown beneath the cross of the lord [Music] [Music] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john by the cross of jesus were his mother and his mother's sister mary the wife of clovis and mary magdalene when jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother woman behold your son then he said to the disciple behold your mother and from that hour the disciple took her into his home the gospel of the to you lord jesus christ as jesus hung on the cross those last few moments of his earthly life he gave one final gift to his disciple john and to the other disciples present the gift of the blessed virgin mary behold your mother as jesus endured suffering and death on the cross his mother stood there by that cross weeping full of sadness full of sorrow yet she remained by the side of her son in what was perhaps the darkest moment of his earthly life and as we hear those words behold your mother a reminder to us today as we celebrate this feast of our lady of sorrows that the blessed virgin mary continues to walk with us and to stand by our side not here just during those moments of goodness and blessing but especially during those moments that seem to be so challenging those moments when it seems as though god has forgotten us she remains faithful to us and in the first reading we are told from the letter to the hebrews that jesus learned obedience from what he suffered and when he was made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him jesus son of god was a human person like us and we know that there were moments in his life especially during his ministry for he suffered greatly he was rejected he was mocked but he also continued to stand firm in the call he was given to be savior and messiah of the world he came to the father often in prayer crying before him in words of hope in words of faith and it was through suffering that he learned obedience so today as we celebrate the gift of our lady of sorrows let us truly thank the lord for the gift of his mother that he has given to each and every one of us knowing especially during those moments of the cross in our lives that not only is jesus standing by our side but also the blessed virgin mary she will never abandon us she stands by our side because in her own life because of her love for her son jesus she was also called to share in his passion and his suffering and death if we are true disciples of the lord if we truly love him above all things then we know there will be moments of suffering there will be moments of sorrow because of our love for him but he is always faithful always faithful in spirit and faithful in the gift of the blessed virgin mary his mother and our mother to all who profess faith in her son jesus trusting that christ sees our need and reaches out to care for us we bring these prayers to the father for all bishops priests and deacons may the hope our holy mother shares with them give them strength and vibrancy for the ministry let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for safety and peace in our communities and nations let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those suffering from loneliness or depression may the holy spirit fill them with hope let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for this community of faith may sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church receive o merciful god to the praise of your name the prayers and sacrificial offerings which we bring to you as we venerate the blessed virgin mary whom you graciously gave to us as a most devouted mother when she stood by the cross of jesus who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god and to praise bless and glorify your name of the blessed ever virgin mary by the overshadowing of the holy spirit she conceived your only begotten son and without losing the glory of virginity brought forth into the world the eternal light jesus christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we [Music] acclaim holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] blessed is he blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord in the highest [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] [Music] until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and jose our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and to may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] [Laughter] [Music] amen amen [Music] [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in pray having received the sacrament of eternal redemption we humbly ask oh lord that honoring how the blessed virgin mary suffered with her son we may complete in ourselves for the church's sake what is lacking in the sufferings of christ who lives and reigns forever and ever amen before the final blessing we'd like to extend a special welcome to all who are visiting the cathedral today for the very first time so if this is your first visit i would invite you to raise your hand high so that we can extend a special welcome to you welcome to the cathedral of our lady of the angels if you did park in the cathedral parking structure you may obtain a 90-minute parking validation from one of the cathedral volunteers or security officers near the bronze doors yesterday we had an opportunity to celebrate the feast of the exaltation of the cross today we celebrate the feast of our lady of sorrows as i mentioned my homily our focus is on that cross of jesus a cross of suffering but yet a cross that leads to life fullness of life and jesus the risen lord and so i would like to take this opportunity this afternoon to thank our cathedral volunteers especially our ushers who are here every time we celebrate the eucharist in order to ensure that all of us are following the protocols that are mandated by the county of los angeles and also by the archdiocese and that being that any time we're indoors to make sure that we have our mask on and that they're actually covering our noses i know that after so long we want to get rid of these and i often refer to the pandemic as a cross and it is a cross it's a cross that we're still caring and only god knows why we're still carrying this cross but if we all do our part in order to maintain our own health and the safety of others then i am sure the day will come when this cross will be taken from us and we can return to life perhaps as it once was so i thank you for your patience and your cooperation and to continue to use these masks not just for yourself but those who gather around you every time we come to celebrate the eucharist in this cathedral the house of god the lord be with you and may almighty god bless you this day and always the father the son and the holy spirit amen we now go in peace to love and to serve the lord in one another thanks be to god and have a good afternoon [Music] [Music] jesus [Music] [Music]
