Members of Lahaina church ward gather $150K in donations, fly supplies to West Maui

donations continue pouring in but getting those supplies to that part of the island has proven to be difficult new specialist Ashley Moser join us live with how locals on Maui are Distributing to those who are in need Ashley well Mike we are in touch with members of the Lahaina First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints they are overwhelmed with the love and support after losing some of their own in the fire the focus is now on the community and getting those supplies to hard to reach places many of our friends houses are completely just gone and our two our church Community itself we have 80 families who lost their home Maui residents Sierra Levitt says watching her friends lose everything it really is devastating the Lahaina First Ward member is now focused on helping those in need her group now purchasing supplies using donations from around the world so far in the past four days we've raped a hundred and fifty thousand dollars and so far we probably have only spent like 40 or 50 of it she says getting those supplies into West Maui has been a challenge only one way in and out and they closed the road but thankfully the group was able to hook up with a local pilot to fly in supplies daily hunt the protein bars you know beef jerky and then things that were really important like formula and diapers futons even filling up suitcases and flying them to Maui she says the needs shift every day I had to get over their pop-up tent coming and we needed cots for sleeping and ponchos and she says the needs will continue as locals focus on rebuilding their lives she just hopes utahns recognize this isn't just going to be a quick fix you know this is not a Sprint it's gonna be a marathon and it's going to take a long time to rebuild up Lahaina and state people's homes and it's not just going to be over in a month now Sierra and that group they are documenting every trip they make on Instagram at Sierra's kitchen if you want to follow them she wants people to know where exactly those donations are going her venmo is Preston Sierra Levitt back to you incredible to see the lengths people go to just to help out great story there Ashley thank you our entire KSL team is raising funds to help the people on Maui 100 of the money that we receive will be donated to the Hawaii Community Foundation we have already raised more than 211 thousand dollars so a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed
