THEN JOSEPH DeANGELO WAS ARRESTED AND NOW AWAITING TRIAL ON MURDER CHARGES. HE'S ENTERED A NOT GUILTY PLEA. NO, HE HASN'T YET ENTERED A PLEA. THE BREAK IN THAT CASE CAME THROUGH DNA AND GENETIC GENEALOGY. OUR NEXT GUESS CICI MOORE IS A DNA DETECTIVE OF SORTS. YOU HAVE TO HEAR HER STORY. SHE'S BECOME ONE OF THE LEADERS IN THIS FIELD. SHE'S KNOWN TO DO A LOT OF HER LEGWORK FROM HER COUCH AND IT IS GROUND BREAKING WORK THAT COULD HAVE HUGE IMPLICATIONS FOR FIGHTING CRIME. SHE'S HERE. WE'LL SPEAK WITH HER IN A MOMENT BUT WATCH THIS. >> THEY SHOULD TELL US WHICH ONES WE CAN BE MORE CONFIDENT ABOUT. >> THIS IS HER TEACHING A CLASS ON GENETIC GENEALOGY. >> THERE'S NO SEPARATION BETWEEN THOSE TWO POPULATION. >> FOR MOORE THIS ALL STARTED AS A HOBBY. SHE HAS HELPED THOUSANDS FINDS THEIR BIOLOGICAL FAMILIES AND SERVES AS DNA EXPERT ON PBS SHOW "FINDING YOUR ROOTS." LATELY SHE'S TAKING ON ANOTHER IMPORTANT ROLE, FIGHTING CRIME. >> IT NEVER ONCE OCCURRED TO ME I WOULD END UP BEING INVOLVED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT IN ANY WAY AND CERTAINLY NOT HELPING TO SOLVE CRIMES. >> MOORE PARTNERS WITH A COMPANY WHICH ANALYZES DNA SAMPLES LEFT AT CRIME SENSE AN UPLOADS THEIR RESULTS TO A PUBLIC GENEALOGY WEBSITE WHERE PEOPLE HAVE PROVIDED RESULTS FROM DNA TESTS. >> THEIR DNA IS COMPARED TO PEOPLE IN THE DATABASE. >> AFTER LIKELY MATCHES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED, THEN COMES THE PUZZLE, FIGURING OUT WHO THE SUSPECT MIGHT BE. TRACING THE DNA OF PEOPLE POTENTIALLY RELATED TO THE PERSON WHOSE DNA WAS AT THE CRIME SCENE. >> WE BUILD THEIR FAMILY TREE. SO THE PEOPLE SHOW SHARE DNA WITH THE SUSPECT THEIR FAMILY TREES ARE KEY TO IDENTIFYING HIM. I HAVE TO USE TRADITIONAL GENE LOD -- GENE LOGICAL RESEARCH BUT ALSO PER SHARE ARCHIVES, GOOGLE, SOCIAL MEDIA. >> IN THE THREE MONTHS SHE'S BEEN WITH THE COMPANY, SIX CASES SHE'S WORKED ON HAVE LED TO ARRESTS, LIKE THE CASE IN INDIANA OF 8-YEAR-OLD APRIL TINSLEY MURDERED IN 1988. POLICE SAY SHE HAD BEEN SEXUALLY ASSAULTED AND STRANGLED. OVER THE YEAR THE KILLER TAUNTED THE COMMUNITY BY LEAVING THREATENING MESSAGES. LAST MONTH POLICE ARRESTED 59-YEAR-OLD JOHN MILLER WHO HAS BEEN CHARGED NOW WITH MURDER AND FELONY CHILD MOLESTING. HE HAS PLEADS NOT GUILTY. THE ARREST OF 55-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM TALBOT LAST MAY FOR A 31-YEAR-OLD COLD CASE OF A MURDERED YOUNG COUPLE IN WASHINGTON. >> IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR GENETIC GENEALOGY, WE WOULDN'T BE STANDING HERE TODAY. >> TALBOT, TOO, HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY. >> MAYBE IF PEOPLE REALIZE IT'S A LOT HARDER TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER THAN IT USED TO BE, THEY WILL STOP AND THINK. >> CICI MOORE JOINS ME NOW. PLEASE WELCOME CICI MOORE P EXPLAIN IT IN THIRD GRADE TERMS FOR ME. I DIDN'T FOLLOW IT. THIS ISN'T 23ANDME ANCESTOR.COM, IT'S A PUBLIC DNA WEBSITE. HOW DO PEOPLE GET CONNECTED WITH THAT AND HOW DO THEY GO ON THAT? >> THEY HAVE TO HAVE TESTED AT ONE OF THE CONSUMER DATABASES LIKE ANCESTOR DNA. THEN THEY DOWNLOAD RAW DATA AND UPLOAD IT HERE. >> WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT? >> IT HAS SOME DIFFERENT TOOLS OTHER COMPANIES DON'T HAVE. IF YOU TESTED 23ANDME AND I TEST ANCESTOR DNA AND WE WANT TO COMPARE IT WE CAN. >> PEOPLE WILLINGLY GO TO THE PUBLIC WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION. >> YES. >> AND YOU'RE THERE. >> I AM THERE. I'VE BEEN THERE SINCE 2010, SINCE INCEPTION. >> LET'S TAKE ME AS A HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE, LET'S PRETEND I'M SOME SORT OF CRIMINAL BUT I'VE NEVER SUBMITTED MY DNA BECAUSE I KNOW I'M A CRIMINAL. HOW WOULD YOU FIND ME? >> BY YOUR SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH COUSINS. WE'RE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO SHARE DNA WITH YOU. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A LOT OF DNA. BASED ON THEIR FAMILY TREES I REVERSE ENGINEER THE TREE OF THE CRIMINAL. >> LET'S SAY MY SECOND COUSIN DID ANCESTRY, GOT A PROFILE. THEY CHOSE TO MAKE IT PUBLIC ON THIS WEBSITE. NOW WE HAVE SOME OF THE SAME BLOOD LINE, SAME DNA. HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT -- HOW DO YOU FIND -- MY FIRST COUSIN'S NAME IS JILL. LET'S TAKE HER. HOW WOULD YOU KNOW JILL HAS DNA THAT'S RELATED TO A CRIMINAL. >> I'M A GENOLOGIST SO I'M USED TO BUILDING PEOPLE'S FAMILY TREES. THAT'S WHAT I'VE DONE FOR MANY YEARS. IF YOUR SECOND COUSIN, LET'S SAY, IN THE DATABASE, THEY WOULD SHARE ABOUT 3% OF DNA WITH YOU. SO I WOULD PREDICT WHAT THE RELATIONSHIP IS TO THE UNKNOWN SUBJECT OR CRIMINAL. >> YOU'D HAVE TO HAVE MY DNA FROM THE CRIME SCENE. >> YES, THAT'S RIGHT. >> LIKE THE JONBENET RAMSEY CASE. THERE'S DNA IN THAT CASE BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHO IT BELONGS TO. >> I'M TRYING TO REVERSE IDENTITY M'S WITH THE DNA SHARED. THE GRANDPARENTS, I WOULD COMPARE THE ERMTS DNA OF THE KNOWN PERSON BACK TO GRANDPARENTS AND GOING FORWARD IN TIME TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT PERSON AT THE RIGHT TIME. >> YOU LOOK AT THE TREE, THIS FAMILY MEMBER DIED, MOVED TO ITALY, CAN'T BE THESE PEOPLE. >> IT'S NOT USUALLY FROM ONE COUSIN, I CAN DO IT FROM TRIANGULAI TRIANGULATING. WHO FROM THIS FAMILY TREE MARRIED INTO THIS FAMILY TREE. AS I MOVE FORWARD I'M LOOKING FOR INTERSECTIONS WHERE YOUR COUSIN AND THE OTHER SECOND COUSIN MATCHES FAMILIES COMBINED. >> IT'S A COMBINATION OF UNDERSTANDING DNA AND JUST SHOE LEATHER DETECTIVE WORK. YOU'RE A DETECTIVE REALLY. >> I GUESS I AM. >> YOU ARE A DETECTIVE. >> SHE'S BEEN HELPING PEOPLE FIND BIRTH PARENTS FOR YEARS AND HELPING THEM UNDERSTAND ANCESTRY. NOW SINCE THE GOLDEN STATE KILLER THING, SHE'S TURNED HER INCREDIBLE SKILLS ON CRIME TO THE BENEFIT OF ALL OF US. NOW SHE'S LOOKING INTO SOME OF THE MOST INFAMOUS COLD CASES IN HISTORY. SPE CECE MORE HELPING LAW ENFORCEMENT SOLVE COLD CASE MURDERS AND MORE CRIME. WELCOME BACK CECE. THERE ARE SEVEN CASES YOU'VE PROVIDED INFORMATION THAT HAS LED TO AN ARREST. THESE ARE BAD CASES, BAD CASES. SHE IS LITERALLY HELPING SOLVE OR AT LEAST LEAD TO ARREST. WE'LL SEE HOW IT PLAYS OUT IN COURT. I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT CHRISTY MER AC. SHE WAS MURDERED IN 1992 WHEN SHE WAS JUST 25 YEARS OLD. SEVERE BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA. SHE WAS STRANGLED. THE CASE WAS COLD FOR ALL THIS TIME. TELL US WHAT YOU DID. >> THE CRIME SCENE DNA WAS UPLOADED TO GEDMATCH. BASED ON THE PEOPLE SHARING DNA WITH THAT UNKNOWN CRIMINAL, I WAS ABLE TO POINT THE POLICE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION TO FIND HIM. >> YOU FOUND AN IDENTITY OF SOMEBODY YOU THOUGHT THEY SHOULD CHECK OUT. YOU DON'T GO CHECK OUT THE PERSON. >> ABSOLUTELY NO. I JUST GIVE THEM A TIP. >> AND WHO WAS IT? >> IT WAS A MAN NAMED RAYMOND ROW, WHO WAS VERY POPULAR IN HIS AREA, KIND OF FAMOUS KNOWN AS D.J. FREEZE. HE WAS POPULAR FOR WEDDINGS, CLUBS. HE WAS LIVING WHAT APPEARED TO BE THIS NORMAL LIFE, HAD A WIFE AND CHILD. HAD A REALLY STRONG MEDIA PRESENCE, SOCIAL MEDIA. SO I COULD LEARN A LOT ABOUT HIM. HE HAD INTERVIEWS ONLINE. IT WAS SHOCKING TO FIND THIS PERSON WAS HIDING SUCH A DEEP SECRET. >> HE IS NOW UNDER ARREST, NO FORMAL PLEA IN HIS CASE YET. THERE WAS A RECENT CASE, THE RAPE OF AN ELDERLY WOMAN, A 79-YEAR-OLD, JUST THIS PAST APRIL, JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO. TELL US WHAT YOU DID. >> THIS WAS DIFFERENT. IT WASN'T A COLD CASE. THIS WAS POTENTIALLY AN ACTIVE ATTACKER. IT WAS A LOT OF PRESSURE TO TRY TO IDENTIFY HIM BEFORE HE STRUCK AGAIN. IT'S THE SAME PROCESS. AGAIN, THAT UNKNOWN DNA FROM THE CRIME SCENE WAS UPLOADED TO GEDMATCH. ON THIS ONE IT WAS ACTUALLY VERY DIFFICULT. I USED THE DNA FROM LOTS OF DIFFERENT COUSINS. I FOUND WHERE THOSE FAMILIES CAME TOGETHER. ALL THE MATCHES WERE ON THE EAST COAST. I NEEDED TO GET IT OVER TO ST. GEORGE, UTAH, TO A FAMILY THERE. FINALLY THOSE PIECES CAME TOGETHER, ALL OF THIS DIFFERENT DNA FROM DIFFERENT FAMILIES COMBINED TO THIS ONE FAMILY. I WAS ABLE TO HELP NARROW IT DOWN TO THE FOUR BROTHERS IN THAT FAMILY. >> UNBELIEVABLE. AN ARREST WAS MADE IN THAT CASE, TOO, WHICH COMES TO THE RELIEF OF THE WOMAN WHO HAD TO WORRY ABOUT WHETHER -- >> A WONDERFUL, WOMAN, TOO. >> HAD TO WORRY. WHAT CASES ARE YOU FOCUSED ON NOW? >> I CAN'T TALK ABOUT CURRENT CASES. >> BUT FROM OLD -- I MENTIONED JONBENET RAMSEY. IS THAT POTENTIALLY SOLVABLE? >> I WOULD LOVE TO WORK ON THAT CASE. IF THEY HAVE DNA I WOULD LOVE TO WORK ON THAT CASE. I'VE FOLLOWED IT FOR A LONG TIME. >> ZODIAK KILLING. >> THAT'S PROBABLY MY NUMBER ONE CASE I WOULD LIKE TO WORK ON. I THINK THEY HAVE A TEAM WORKING ON IT. >> TELL US SOMETHING. >> I KNOW THEY WERE TRYING TO EXTRACT DNA FROM THE ENVELOPES. >> THIS THE FUTURE OF CRIME SOLVING, IS IT NOT? >> I DO THINK SO. I THINK WE CAN MAKE SOCIETY A SAFER PLACE. HOPEFULLY EVEN CAUSE SOMEONE TO STOP AND THINK, MAYBE IT COULD BE A DETERRENT. IT'S NOT SO EASY TO GET AWAY WITH CRIMES ANYMORE. >> THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR GOOD WORK. >> THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.
