โLive a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.โ
The words of Marcus Aurelius had a big impact on me. Even though he was more like a writer than a strong stoic like Seneca or Socrates. Seneca and Socrates didnโt leave much writing behind, most of what we know about them is from other writers who wrote about them.
I think some might find the mediations of Marcus Aurelius inspiring, similar of how some people see the bible.
He's on my list to read more of because his commentary on whether to worship gods when it's unclear they exist smashed Pascals Wager into tiny tiny pieces before it even became popular.
Have you read Ryan Holidays lives of the stoics? Much better reading than any JW publication on how to live a good life
Am no atheist, but nor one to shut knowledge out, so am a check this Aurelius dawg out ๐๐ค
Cool, Iโm more into existential nihilism.
His words make Jesus words seem so simple and basic. The stoic philosophers of the first and second century made me think that the way Jesus was talking was a new movement of the time period and not something uniquely special
Bro Marcus would be offended if you cornered him into only being relevant to agnostic/atheist. Thatโs whatโs dope about him.
He was philosophic, he asked questions and have probable answers.
Solidification of beliefs is fine for the individual, granted he was talking to himself in the only writings we have for him.
