Measuring for a Storm Door

hi there I'm Dan also known as the storm door guy I'm the professional storm - our installer I've installed thousands and thousands of doors from a few large national retailers today I'm going to show you how we properly measure for a storm door step outside all right right here we've got your standard front entry door opening the first thing that I look for is the placement of the doorbell visiting the door opening or is it kind of far away it's like this much far away the next thing I look for is the light sometimes the porch lights actually sit here and go into the door opening so it looks like this one's pretty clear so step one let's check for any obstructions in the doorway anything the door might open into right here we have a partial brick wall it looks like the door should be fine there though up to I'm going to give me a little piece of hinge side z-bar the storm door I carry this with me you may or may not have one so what I'll do next is take this and see where my storm door frame would line up specifically I'm going to look at the threshold right here and see where it sits you can take a look right there you see the storm door frame so it's kind of nice little sweater just on top of the expander or the threshold let's go space right here the threshold typically should extend past exterior trim right here this point should be out here this one is not to let Mike off your columns later on we come across to the other side here we see that the door frame goes all the way down to the concrete as you can see like that so what we have here is an issue where this threshold is not completely leather square or plumb in the opening ready standing so we're measuring for a storm door we're going to measure six places the first place you're always going to measure from the exterior trim do not measure from the door jamb measure from the exterior trim to the exterior trim right there so we're going to measure from at the top from the left side the dot from the left side to the right side and then down about the door-handle height you're going to go from left to right and then again at the bottom you're going to go from left to right that would be your opening width now for the opening height we're going to measure from the bottom the top on the left side then we're going to measure from the middle right here all the way up to the top there next area panel again and then on the right side from the bottom all the way to the top those are the six measurements so I'm going to show you now how to do that that's how you measure for the door opening now there's a form that I have on my website storm door guy calm that you can download it looks like this it's just called the storm door worksheet basically shows you again where to measure the door opening fill in the measurements there and then you can copy everything down there the nice thing at the bottom and says your door measurements are and I just fill that in as well I'll thank you for letting me show you how to measure for a storm door properly if you have any other questions about storm doors or storm door related issues please visit my website storm door guy calm and while you're there if you wouldn't mind helping us pay the bills and visit our advertisers you'll see them both on the top here and on the right side of your screen thank you so much and have a great day
