hey hey everybody welcome on into clay share live today we are going to be using mako's washes for texture so i have got four of mako's washes here gravel and we are going to be using them for texture i have some examples of what they look like on pieces by themselves and then a few with other glazes so it's going to be really fun we're going to be broadcasting tonight live on clayshare.com the clayshare app so if you don't have the clayshare app yet go get it on the clayshare facebook page on my personal youtube page that's jessica putnam phillips go follow there if you want on vimeo.com and on clayshares instagram hi everybody instagram account and the instagram account has one view but everywhere else we have three cameras so you get to see it from all angles so you'll you'll get to watch and make along so this month for may we are featuring mako because may may co can't help myself i had to do it and so all month long we've been giving away the mako stoneware glazes the new ones for 2021 i have the little sample pack right here so we'll be giving another one of these away at the end of the broadcast and to be eligible to win these all you do is sign up for our email list go to clayshare.com sign up for our emails that's it it's open to anybody anywhere in the world if you live in the us mako will ship it to you if you live outside of the us and you win mako will send it to me and then i will send it to you because they don't ship outside the u.s but guess what i ship outside of the u.s so i will send it to you so you'll get it you're going to get your glazes and i'm just going to give you a quick what are those glazes the new ones are cenote this is mako's rainforest it's a nice green himalayan salt we're going to use this a bit tonight the azurite which is a cobalt blue and the landslide which is kind of a brown like a iron brown and they are all food safe but only the cenote is dinnerware safe and we talked about that monday morning in the good morning clay show a bit we talked about that um some more last week and everything so all right so i see everybody's here yeehaw it is hot in vermont we don't usually get this hot but it's in like the sev high 70s you guys vermont doesn't have air conditioning we don't have that it's just it's hot you suffer so we're either freezing cold under 8 feet of snow or melting go figure oh well i'm really not complaining i would rather be too hot than too cold all right so i'm going to show you a couple of my favorite examples of the mako washes before we get into this little demo tonight and i've got two of my favorite ways to use them right here this one is the cobalt and i've applied it to the surface and i'll bring in a little closer and i brushed it kind of in bands along here and then i wiped back and then i put don't don't tell mako i put i put amaco's lavender celadon on top of mako's cobalt wash and it looks amazing it's one of my favorite combos right here and yes oh wait the washes are food safe i just want you to know because i i know everybody's wondering wondering about that so barbara lived in dummerston so she knows vermont yes uh vermont is it's crazy weather here and then this is another combo that i really like using with the mako washes this is the copper wash on the edge and in on the little veins of the leaf and then this is my chun blue on top so it has like this kind of soft green blue cast to it so those are my two favorite combos now i did have examples of these washes by themselves on pieces but they've sold they're gone i don't actually have the washes by themselves so the washes that i the actual washes are iron wash manganese wash cobalt and the cobalt in the copper wash those are the four washes that i have they do have a rutile wash i don't have that so i don't have any examples i don't have that wash i've got to get it but what i did is i went into my photos because i did a test last year with all of them and i'll show close up folks on instagram i'm sorry about the glare and i'm i don't know is there glare on this for you guys and we'll go through we'll go through them because i want you to be able to see this but the one at a time i can show them to you this is the copper wash folks on instagram everybody else can y'all see that is that is that good there without an ankle so that is the copper wash with just clear glaze on top this is the cobalt wash go over there over there by itself just clear glaze a zinc free glaze this one here is the manganese wash manganese is just a dark brown color and then the iron oxide has more of a rust red brown tone so the manganese and the iron are very similar to each other and just for comparison i thought it would be nice to see how it looked with just black under clays so that is just the black under glaze now we did a kiln opening with these i shared these in a broadcast these exact pieces here last year when i did them let's see is my october 20 looks like october 28th last year so if you go back and look in october's post you'll see more photos of those being used but tonight we're gonna we're gonna have some fun because i've got a bunch of mako glazes i've got the washes we're just gonna put them on stuff all right so when you um let's see if you scroll down on facebook when you use the washes iron or teal with amico mix and clear over the iron and routile basically disappear mary says mary i think you need to go a little heavier in your application with the the ruteal and the iron uh they they got to be thicker same with the manganese and these washes are meant to be diluted down usually 50 water 50 water 50 percent wash although you can put them on full strength for them to be considered food safe according to mako you dilute them 50 percent put on two coats or so and and they say it's food safe with a food safe glaze that's from mako i'm just saying what mako says yeah i can't see it though you gotta make it bigger we talked about that last week my comment moderator needs to make those comments bigger because i can't read them when they're the size of little ants and they're 10 feet away it's true all right so i have some bisque wear pieces and i thought we could have some fun i made little i always make these little trinket dishes these ones here happen to be i use the mason jar cookie cutter and then i pressed them into foam and made a little pressed dish so that's why they have little depth to them but they're great as like a teaspoon rest or put your rings on it or votive candles or really anything you want to use so what's the difference between a wash and a glaze that's a really good question so these particular washes that we're using here are meant to be diluted with water and then applied either straight or wiped back and then a glaze goes on top they don't have any flux well they have a little bit of flux but they don't have the silica in them they don't have the glaze former so what if you use these by themselves they would just be a very dry mat you wouldn't have that that glossy shiny they wouldn't be sealed in like they are when we have that that glaze you see the shine that's the glass on it so these although they'll melt and run they don't have the glass formers in them so that's when you know making up glazes there's different parts to it and you need to have that to get the glaze finished so these are meant to go on under a glaze they're not meant to be used by themselves unless you're doing sculptural pieces or you could you could put them on the outside like this cup here gorgeous highly textured cup you could put that on the outside if you didn't want to glaze this cup i want to glaze this cup so we're not going to do that for this piece but you can use them by themselves if you're making garden stacks say if you made one of these fabulous spheres that we're going to glaze in the private broadcast after this you could put those washes on this and that would be a really nice way to highlight your texture so let's mosey on through it's like an under glaze right but the difference between the washes and the under glazes is under glazes are very stable you put an under glaze on it's going to stay that color it's not really going to melt and run when you put the wash on because they're made from oxides that's you know this is just manganese basically this is just cobalt this one right here is just iron and this one right here is just copper so you could buy these oxides by themselves and just mix them up in your own studio and add water to them if you want to but mako sells them already pre-done if you don't want to have to deal with the dry oxides and have that in your studio and georgie's you know i talk about georgie's and their interactive pigments they're similar they're also a wash but the pigments are a combination of multiple oxides these are just one so these are a singular oxide although you can mix them together if you want to will they melt run and stick um yes they will melt run and stick because when you iron oxide it will flux and melt and run the stick totally will if you put it on too heavy and you don't or you don't dilute it enough or wipe back enough yes they will so what we're going to do is we're going to do some application where we put it on thinned down and then we're going to wipe back excess because we want to highlight our texture so that's what we're going to do and i'm going to work on this little plate that i made i i think this was the last play i made before my hand surgery was these ginkgo plates do you all remember we made these together well we're gonna we're gonna do that and the really great thing about washes is they really make your texture pop out so if you're using something with texture on it and you feel like your results are too subtle use a wash and then a light colored glaze and it's going to really highlight your texture so we're going to start and i'm going to use the copper right here and we're going to apply that and you can use any brush you want to apply this it doesn't matter um i think you might want to go with i don't know if you're on camera too you're on camera three and so i just got a bucket of water over here if you're going to be using a lot of it you might want to get a pallet or some little bowls these little disposable bowls are great because you can use them over and over for your oxides and your washes if i was going to use a lot of this i would get a separate container like a little small deli dish and i would dilute it down and i would keep it in that deli dish that way i already have it ready to go i don't have to mix it up every time so we're going to go ahead and mix this up here and i'm just going to pour a bit out and then you can use any water this happens to be water from my tap now i know there's a lot of conversations about using you know distilled water or purified water my water's well water there's a lot of iron in my water can it affect my glaze it could but i don't i don't think it's going to be enough to make me stop using my well water all right so we're going to mix this till it's about the consistency of ink so i don't know if you can see the viscosity on this to give you an idea it's not like water it's like milk really it's more like milk so can you use them on greenware well here yes yes with a caveat what are you going to do with them on greenware if you're going to apply them and i'll apply this and i'll answer that question if you're going to apply them and not wipe them back yes go ahead and put them on greenware but if you want to wipe them back when you wipe on green wear you also will wipe away some of your clay so you will be in basically wiping back some of your texture i don't think you want to do that right so we're putting this wash you see why it's called a wash because it's basically a wash now mako recommends two watered down coats applied to your surface you do not have to wipe it back for it to be food safe according to mako this is straight from their website so if you know you have questions you can reach out to mako but that's what they are saying so that's their official statement on these products right here food safe when used with a food safe glaze food safe when used with a food safe clear glaze i actually should specify they do say clear glaze which can be a difference because if you're using a glaze with a lot of oxides in it already it could affect it all right so that's the front and you see how it's it's drying see how the shine is going away so it's okay to apply the clear glaze directly over another glaze after bisque firing or does it require two separate firings so this doesn't require two separate firing separate firings this is a bisque plate i'm applying the wash to it right now and i will wipe back and i'll put my clear glaze right on top just brush it on just gonna do that and it will be fine you have to worry about it so the back is your chance to either add wash or not i'm gonna actually put some wash on the back and the brush i'm using is a sumi s-u-m-i brush they're also called japanese or chinese calligraphy brushes sometimes they're called bamboo brushes because the handles are made out of bamboo and you can pretty much get them any art supply store any place that sells brushes but as i was saying you can use any brush you want you do not have to use these so i put the wash on the back i think i'm going to leave it there i'm just going to let it be and see what happens all right so we have our two coats on you can leave it and then glaze on top but i like to i like to go ahead and wipe back now we are dealing with heavy metals right we're dealing with a wash that has the oxides in it you know if you're doing this as a hobby and you do it a few times or you know as anybody does things that are hobbies you'll be fine but if you're doing this for a living i would suggest wearing gloves when you're wiping back because we're going to be squeezing this out into a bucket of water that we're going to continue to put our hands in and so then you can end up over time exposing yourself to metals using it a few times once in a while you're fine but if you're going to do this a lot you should wear gloves and speaking of which hey studio assistant want to grab me my nitrile gloves they're right there by that box right on the bench yeehaw first first try you found it all right so i have jessica actually give me the whole box and i'll share the box so i know it can be hard to find products like gloves right now there's a little bit of shortage these are night trial gloves i bought them online through amazon they come in all different sizes and colors can you use latex gloves absolutely i have a latex allergy so i use nitrile gloves you know and you just put it on and it'll it'll protect your hand and i see a question about the ginkgo design is it a rolling pin it is my rolling pin design that i did um i actually have two ginkgo designs i have this one which is my floating ginkgo and then i have layered ginkgo which is like lots of ginkgo leaves layered on top of each other i like them both equally i couldn't pick that's why i have two designs because i drew one and then i drew the other and it's like it's like children you can't have a favorite all right so let's wipe back and i get a lot of messages from folks saying they do the wiping back and they have nothing left and i feel you might be doing one of two things not squeezing i don't know if you can see i'm really squeezing this sponge out like i'm wringing the sponge out really hard so it's pretty dry and when we wipe it we're not trying to scrub it out we're just wiping back the top layer and these washes right now if you want to get them clayscape's pottery has them and they are doing a 20 off sale and it's an automatic 20 off so you don't even have to go and put a code in it's just too many people order when i promote things so they just said we're going to give it to everybody because it's it's crazy how many people will jump on and order them and i don't want them inundated and i don't want their site to crash so we went ahead and just decided to do the discount automatically so if you want to get these washes you can save 20 off just go to clayscapespottery.com and you just get them and the 20 is automatically applied so i'm selectively wiping a little more aggressively in the areas that are the negative space and yes i would be wearing gloves normally on both hands i'm just i'm doing it one-handed tonight when i do washing when i'm putting washes and pigments on things i'll usually have all my pieces lined up and i'll just do a whole kiln full at once and get all my washes on and then wipe them all back and i try to do all one color first so all my copper and then i switch out my water and then i'll move to my iron and switch out my water and then my cobalt and so on down the line and these can be applied to green wear but you do not want to wipe back if you wipe them back you're going to wipe away your texture as well so keep that in mind when you're wiping green wear you're wiping away clay on bisque wear which is what this is we're not wiping away clay all right so you can already see how much that texture is popping like you can really see it it looks good and i mean i can selectively keep going in these sponges are those really inexpensive pottery sponges and you can roll them up and then that way you can just use the tip of it to get in areas if you really want to remove something you can do it that way now i want my rim to have a lot on there so i'm going to go in and just straight wash and using the side of my brush i'm just going to apply that to the rim i'm not going to wipe off the back side i'm going to let that be i want to see what happens with that two watered-down washes on the back so this will give me a nice rim it'll it'll sort of create a border for this design so that the design doesn't just go floating off the edge like we have a definite stop there a little little more refined a little more finished look just like that and if for some reason you get some somewhere you don't want i can see a little bit creeped up on the top i don't want there just go in with your sponge and take it off that's it so this needs to sit and dry and then we can put our glaze on it i see a bunch of folks tuning in from all over great to see you all here tonight so can you do the same thing with under glazes karen yes you can do the same thing it's not the same product at all the wash like this one here which is the copper the wash is actually made of copper oxides so it's actually copper carbonate and it will flux and melt and run and it will change depending on what glaze you put on top of it a green you could use a copper colored green under glaze but it's not going to be as interactive it's not going to react to the glaze you're not going to get the melting so they're not the same product they're completely different products actually if you want something stable like you are going to get the same result every time you go with under glazes if you want to have more spontaneity and more of an organic look you're going to go with the wash i go with the washes and i use under glazes it just depends so i will put a glaze on top and if you guys want we'll we'll pick one and put one on this in a bit we're going to let that set and we're going to move on to something else so do these hold up to cone 10 i believe they're fi they're low fire and mid-range they are just iron oxide so yes technically they can go to cone 10. the thing is they're going to melt a lot more so you'll want to test but it's just copper it's just copper so and we can use copper washes cone 10 reduction firing wood firing yeah so they could go there they might melt a little more just like they normally would so test them first and see let's do some babies so that was the we did this ginkgo with the copper and i'm gonna put my copper in front of it so that i know let's do a cobalt and we'll do something littler with the cobalt now the one that i think really needs the most layering is the manganese i find the manganese will go really really light so you want to make sure you put enough on there joan you're very welcome so cobalt wash works well at cone 10 reduction it does i have some pieces that cone 10 gas reduction with cobalt and the cobalt starts to melt and it just it gets very yummy all right so i'm going to show you another way to do this if you don't have a bowl and you just want to put a little bit you know if you don't want to mix up a bit in a bowl you just want to put a little bit on your piece you get your your brush wet whatever brush you're using ideally you would be using clean water dip it in your wash there's still water held in the brush so i've kind of created a wash in the brush sure the light's a little intense so that could be throwing it off and so i'm just going to brush the washes on directly you know thinning them down a little bit so this gives you more control if you don't want to put the wash on the entire piece this is a nice way to do it so the color you see in the jars is not the color of the wash no you would think this one right here this is the cobalt and it looks like a really pretty purple right and if if it was an under glaze it would look similar because that's how under glazes are but washes change oxides change and react so this color i'm going to glaze this exactly like the little plate that i have here and i don't know if the camera is going to be able to pick it up but you see this dark blue underneath that's this cobalt let me grab that image again for you all because i know i showed them at the front but at the beginning you might not remember this this right here is that showing on the overhead i go to the overhead um and i'll focus this off folks on instagram i'll bring it to you in a sec so this is this this is the same this just has a clear glaze on top but that's it that's exactly it so um this is let me get that glare off there if i can there you go that's the that's what we're using that's this right here that's that looks nothing like it so the cobalt's gonna go a dark cobalt blue a very very dark blue it's beautiful especially if you like a blue and white aesthetic or you want to put a darker blue under a lighter blue or a purple like we're going to do so i'm wiping back i'm going to actually go a little lighter with the white back on this because i really want that blue to stay and because i brushed it on in such a way that it was really really really detailed that i'm not gonna like i'm not gonna scrub it off the whole thing and if for some reason i accidentally take a little more away from an area i can go back like we did earlier i took a little too much off here so i'm just going to brush it in and i'm actually i might just let it be and i won't wipe it back at all just let that stay the edge of this same thing i am going to brush it on a little heavier so this looks purple now but it's going to be dark dark cobalt blue science in your kiln right so what happens it has a chemical change when it becomes when it fires it changes the cobalt from this purple color to a nice dark color so if you make your own paint pigments not not fired pigments your colors your cobalt would give you a very lavender color right if you're a painter but if you are a potter because we fire our colors it changes the way they end up looking with the end result so there's this little dish a little more on there and we're going to go ahead and put purple on top of that in a second yeah the colors do change big time it's a lot yeah you definitely will want to experiment with these so the the whole thing with these washes there's no way i could ever show you all the combos that you could create with these and depending on whether you put a clear glaze on it you're going to get a really if you do a clear glaze that's a good base that's a good start right so start with your clear glaze and then move from a clear glaze to something that has a tint to it like a celadon or a chun well my chun is as a translucent glaze but any other translucent glaze do that and then try it with more opaque glazes like do i have anything without texture i'm really into highlighting texture so most everything i have has texture on it but i have to tell you if you use the mako sandstone and then put some manganese or iron oxide on the rim you're going to get some melting in a like dark rusty brown it's going to look really good and not necessarily a good one for texture but just a good one in general i don't think i have oh i have a planter over there maybe i'll maybe i'll do that next in the next hour maybe we'll do that in the second hour all right so this is what we're going to do with that now i thought we would do we did copper we did cobalt so i'm going to do the manganese and you really need here's your difference the iron oxide well the iron wash is basically iron oxide so if you buy red iron oxide sometimes it's called red spanish iron oxide you can just buy that from your clay supplier or if you don't want a lot of it you can just pick up the wash and it's already in there but you can see it's this rusty orange red color and it's going to turn like rust that you see outside you know that brown rust color i mean if we look into my studio space here i mean it's kind of going to go to these like brown like rusty hardware color so that's the iron it's pretty common but we're going to do the manganese because that's the one i think people have the most trouble with and i'm going to do it on a leaf dish let's shake it up so if you ever make dishes out of leaves and if you haven't you should give it a try you know this is a great way to highlight the texture that's already there but it just takes it up a notch and so shook that up i'm going to shake it a little more what do i think cobalt wash would look like under sky storm or fog celadon i think storm solid on would be too dark and you wouldn't get much from it i think sky would be a beautiful light blue and i think fog would be good as well i think those two would work really well this is the lavender and it looks great under that but i think the storm celedon would be a little too dark and that's the great thing about the mako washes you can use them on amaco glazes like you can mix them together so we're just going to go straight in and i'm going a little messy and then you see i just dipped in my water so that i could then spread this out actually i'm going to put it on the whole thing we're just going to do the whole thing and this is bisquare i wouldn't attempt i would not do this on greenware not this technique all right now we're going to wipe back just like we have been the manganese does run and flux they all will to some extent but i find the manganese runs a lot it's so good on the rim though if you have a bowl or a plate and you want to do a dark rim that is kind of runny like a dark brown rim use the manganese on it and it will give you a nice run so let's wipe this i want this to look vintage a little bit a little bit aged but i don't want it to look just dirty you know there's a there's a line right between vintage and dirty you're laughing you're you're vintage you know all right so i'm now going to remove some of the excess off the area that doesn't have the leaf i'm not going to be too nitpicky about it i just i just want to get most of it off so you can really see the edge of the leaf here and these washes are food safe when you use them with a food safe clear glaze and mako if you want to know more has a whole bunch of info on their website but they do state they are food safe so if you've been worried because i know there's a lot of chatter about manganese and is it safe well mako says these washes are food safe when you use them with a food safe clear glaze all right so let's do the edge of this but look at how that leafs really can you really see that how now if you feel like it looks like i wiped a lot away in the center i might have wiped a little more away there than the rest i can go ahead and go back in and wipe more away or the other option is if i actually want to put more color in take my very very wet brush a tiny dab of the wash and then just brush the wash on and i'm just going to have to blend it all the way around and you'll get some unevenness and tone but that's nature folks because you don't get these solid you know even coverage usually on leaves they'll they'll have different tones they'll be a little darker in some areas a little lighter and others so let's see that a little heavy over here so we can just take some of that back but we have this let me let's focus on insta-see see it's like a dirty leaf that's what we want because we're going to add a glaze on top and it's going to change it yeah microwave safe as well yeah it will be when you're putting a glaze on top of it and i know i answer this question a lot to people who are new to to pottery and and people who aren't even making pottery or just haven't really thought about it um you know we can talk a lot about while you put something that's metal in the microwave and it's gonna arc right but what makes it not arc when you put something made of iron in a glaze in a microwave well iron by itself you put in the microwave yup it arcs when iron's in a glaze it's encapsulated so it's insulated by that glass so it's not going to arc because the glass is the insulator preventing that arc from happening so yes it can go in the microwave as long as you've got a glaze on top by itself it'll sink in so glaze on top glaze on bottom doesn't matter when you fire it they kind of sync together so here is a finished copper wash on the inside of the leaves and on the edge and i want to show you this one area that i think is spectacular and i think i'll come in i'll go into the main camera is that better camera camera one i'll show you folks in a second so you can see it too but do you see this right here that's what i'm showing this right here that right there where it was a little heavy and so i got a little bit more but look at how the veins really pop from the wash now this was the copper and i wiped it back a little aggressively so it won't pop as much as this one here and so we could put clear glaze on it or we could put a colored glaze doesn't matter you can have a tinted glaze clear glaze it's entirely up to you so did i change the stain oh this yeah this is one coat and it's wearing off because kev only did one coat and we haven't see it we didn't seal it so this is going to get a lot of patina on it when i get it wet it looks just like when it was first done talk about my work surface right this is a little side track um but as it ages it's going to patina i might have it i might sand it down and redo it we'll see i'm noticing when you have a small piece that's this the white and the dark are too much of a contrast yeah it's really pop it's really difficult so we might change that up when the time comes hey don don seymour's in the house so we're talking about clayscape's pottery where you can get the mako washes and mako stoneware glazes for 20 off for may well that's dawn from clayscapes so does it have to be glazed um it doesn't have to be glazed you want to put in the microwave where it's unglazed what happens if you don't glaze it it's dry it's matte it just feels like your raw clay so if you rub the clay and you feel how rough that is that's how your finish is going to be it would not be recommended for dinner wear because it's just not going to be nice to eat off of you do want to put a glaze on top ideally all right so we're going to put we're going we're stepping sideways a little bit we're going to use the amaco lavender celadon for those who like to know the numbers it's the c 56 is this glaze amaco c56 i don't even pay attention to the numbers i just call it the lavender and then i have a little fan brush here this holds glaze so nicely and we're just going to brush this on completely cover i'm but i'm not going to keep going back and forth back and forth because what can happen is i can disturb my surface too much so i do want another coat of glaze but i have to let this dry so one good coat and then sit it to the side because if not you're going to disturb it and you're going to make a bit of a mess and you don't want that to happen all right so we've got the leaf piece and i was thinking about what colors we should do and geez i'm not sure oh and i want to do the sea salt so we're going to put the iron i'm going to put the iron with the himalayan salt is what i think we're going to do so let's go ahead and stain that one that is the manganese let's get the iron i'm going to see what happens with that so are the mako glazes coming out as a set or individual colors debbie you can get the new mako glazes individually you can get them 20 off right now through clayscapes they do mako does have a small sample set which we are giving away one tonight but um usually they sell them by the pint when they first come out they'll sell them as a sample set but after that they sell them in pints the amico saladons are yeah the amycoceladons are wonderful they're they're really beautiful how many oxides are there whoo there's a lot there is a lot of oxides um we could do a class just talking about on the different oxides because you have your common ones you know you have copper cobalt red iron red iron oxide is the most common manganese you have rutile you have nickel chromium you have you know vanadium and then you can get into your rare earth oxides so there's a lot a lot of oxides out there i mean oxides are basically minerals from the earth so you know if you think about it it's it's like gems right there's a lot of gems this is just the iron we're going to use and we're going to use the iron and i i'm going to put you know what i'm not going to put the himalayan salt on it i'm going to use the poppy with the iron i want to see what that does because i have some texture on here and the himalayan salt well maybe if i just did one coat the himalayan salt when you go too heavy hides your texture there are so many options so many variables i mean when you're making pottery there is no limits it's like the world is open to you every time you make something even if you make like i made these little dishes two very similar dishes they're gonna look drastically different once they're done because of the different ways i'm treating the surface so teresa asked a question which i did talk about but i'll go back over are these washes from mako similar to georgie's pigments yes but the mako washes are one color so they're just one oxide just cobalt just copper just manganese just rutile just iron well the georgie's interactive pigments are a blend so it can have three or more of those pigments of those oxides mixed together to make one pigment from georgie's so that's the difference all right so i put that iron oxide on and we're gonna wipe it back but i'm actually gonna wipe it back in a way that i smear it onto the unbrushed areas so i will have some where the iron is really heavy and somewhere i'm just using the sponge and you can do that let me just show you let me grab probably end up with iron oxide over my face here's a coaster all right so if you wanted another way to apply this i mean you honestly could wipe back one of this is with the red iron oxide because it's so strong or just the iron wash they call it you could just get that all over your sponge and then you can use that to wipe on and you'll get this brown metallic-y sheen on your surface so it gives a richer surface um you know when we're using clay bodies that are brown i'm looking to have any dark clay bodies around here [Music] nope that's glaze all the way you can't tell so b mix that i'm using is a very light clay if you wanted your clay to have a richer darker look to it with your glazes you could put this on first wipe it back and now you've introduced iron to your clay body and you're going to make a richer clay surface so you'll have that darkness underneath your glazes i mean dab it dab it straight on from the lid like this and iron oxide i love and i'll tell you why iron oxide is one of the few oxides that you can put as much as you want on it and it's food safe you don't have to worry about it be completely fine you don't need to wear the gloves for the iron so we have that on there and i don't know if the camera is picking up but the iron is actually filling in the recessed areas you see you almost can see a metallicy brown do you see how dark it is get in there so we're going to let this one be really dark and we'll put we'll put some glaze on it now it was mentioned and i answered the question will it flux and run yeah these will oxides do so i would never want to put that directly on the bottom and have it sit full strength on a kiln shelf if you wipe it back as a stain yes it can be but not full not full strength so just wipe that off there so you have a piece that has a really heavy iron wash layer and no glaze over it and it has a satin sheen of and satin sheen and a bit of blue color in places ooh from the iron because the iron sometimes does that right it it it's like bluing right on metal it's like that it's really beautiful alright so we've got the iron on this little guy here and what i suggest is you do a bunch of small little trinket dishes you put some wash on it you then put glazes on and you see what you like the best you know you got a little dish probably going to turn out pretty good and that way you have something you can keep and use i mean you can do the test tiles these are fine these little guys right here but once you've fired it they're just a reference in your studio these little guys you know you can give them away as free gifts like i do apparently i'm really bad at keeping my glaze samples for reference because i give them away or sell them so would these work well for garden stack charlotte yes they would they would be fabulous on garden stacks so let's get some more glazes on stuff let's get that let's get the um let's get let's get tangelo out i love me some tangelo we're gonna do a tangelo coaster on iron oxide so let's do that now i'm gonna put all of these pieces in my test kiln my small kiln um i'll probably load them up tomorrow and i'll fire them and i'll share them um monday morning on my good morning clay share broadcast so you guys will get to see it first and then i'll post a video of everything after the broadcast so everybody can see so i'm putting that tangelo from amaco on there and i'm not going to go too heavy down the sides because i don't want it to run we do have iron on the side though let that dry and then we'll come back and do the second coat let's check how we on time we're doing all right we're doing all right we're doing good we're doing good i'm going to put my second coat of the amaco lavender celadon and then this piece will be done the back side of it it's a tiny little trinket dish usually i just do the edges but if you want to flip them over and you glaze a little bit on the back you could do that too you don't have to but you can alright so we did that one there so put that away and then the manganese do you guys want to choose i'll let you if i have the glaze i'll do it um i do have abalone i wonder how abalone is with the manganese me and abalone have an interesting relationship sometimes it works fabulously sometimes not so much so i guess we'll put the abalone on the manganese so how does the iron not contaminate the glaze when i'm brushing it on and then i wash my brush out in the bucket and then when i use it the next time the glaze has already dried so it doesn't hurt it also most glazes will have a little bit of iron in it not all just most but you can always wash your brush out like i just applied this right here if i want to go back into my glaze container you can rinse your brush right back out and then you don't have to worry about it contaminating it i'm going to get the edge and the bottom of this we're going to turn it over this has got little feet on it got a few blops there from the manganese we'll just wipe that back so it's just a little neater on the bottom she says as she keeps smearing it everywhere all right we're going to put this on this is the abalone and it's a nice neutral kind of a beige with a blush of pink to it when it's done right it can be stunning when it's not it can be lackluster it's one of those glazes that's hit or miss it looks great if you put mother of pearl luster on it though all right so that's the bottom glazed and i'm just going to wipe back the glaze off the feet so it won't stick to my kiln shelf and we'll flip that over and we'll let that dry a little bit more and then we'll finish that and we got one we got one more to do so you're getting the 20 off mako at clayscape's pottery if you go through them i'm gonna take my glove off for now and what does the color look like uh where is my abalone bologna plate did you see where i put that kev today i just had it it's the hex plates stacked i think i might have take oh it's over there he has to go fetch it but he has to go quietly so he doesn't shake the camera all right our poppy's ready for our second coat so all right angelo sorry i was going to use poppy oh maybe we'll do poppy on this one so this is the actually give me these are amaco glazes these two here but this is not so this is the abalone from the mako and i put mother of pearl luster on it and it's just i'm going to show the folks on instagram it's this really subtle gorgeous i'll go camera one it's beautiful and if y'all can see that right there so gorgeous when i put the mother of pearl on top by itself it was just kind of blah it needed a little extra umph to it but once you put that mother of pearl on it sings it sings to you it's amazing all right so we did the abalone wow that dried so fast we can go ahead and put that second coat on so i'm just going to do two coats of the abalone with the manganese wash on the rim and so the manganese will run a little bit it'll melt it'll flux it'll really change the way that glaze looks make sure that's sharp okay now we're going to put our second coat of the tangelo oh will it ruin the jar tangelo there's actually none in there at all there's no contaminant happening in there just the way i apply my glazes so let's talk about that i'm pulling my glaze out i'm it's on one side of my brush i'm brushing it on i don't really have any manganese left on the surface so it's not picking up any of that and as i dip back in all it's getting is more of the glaze you know i think it it does come with practice as i'm applying i'm really going in on my scooping out so i'm scooping out more glaze i'm not swirling around in there you know and potentially if i had manganese on the brush getting it all over so that looks good that's that's a good heavy two to two and a half coats of the tangelo i'll swish the brush out and then we've got to do let's do poppy on this guy actually no i want to do more amico what do we got what do you think happens if we put green tea on iron anybody or or on oh no i think this is too opaque to go over the copper i think we'll put it green tea on iron so we're going to do and the cookie cutters here yeah i did see a question and bobby answered it thank you bobby for reminding me these are ann clark cookie cutters i i actually bought a set of them on amazon and i have them in the clay share shop if they're out of stock there wherever they sell cookie cutters this little mason jar set was a cute one all right i'm just going to put a tiny bit of glaze on the back just not where it sits on the shelf the green tea for me is kind of a matte it doesn't really come out glossy um it's a bit of a satiny mat kevin loves it he calls it his gandalf green because it looks like a when i put on a cup it looks like a cup gandalf would drink out of you know like it's a cup a wizard would have when he's you know researching at the libraries of eisenguard to find out about the ring am i running off i tend i tend i tend to run off it happens so i did the back side now we'll do the front side so let's we'll do this so you can see and we'll talk about contamination brushing in i'm scooping it up i'm going to brush it on the iron and then let's go back in see how i scoop it up i'm i'm not really putting any of the iron back into the bucket there into the into the pint i'll spread this around get my edges and we'll let that set and we'll do a second coat we have one more to finish we have one more to do and that is the ginkgo one you love your ann clark cookie cutters but love others better i know sherry i love anne clarke's i love debbie de la cruz oh you guys you know my pumpkin class you know this class we have a little segue you know this class where we make the pumpkins make these pumpkins so i developed a class where i came up with this pumpkin that we make out of clay and i have a template i give you and this class is like four years old which is great but the template you have to cut out by hand but the amazing debbie de la cruz and i partnered together to make the cutters so you can use the cookie cutters to make the pumpkins from my class and not only that we did three sizes so you can make a pumpkin this size you can make a pumpkin this size look at the baby it's so cute and then we have the jumbo pumpkin which is drying over there so debbie and i have partnered to do that and it makes your life easier because now you've got three different sizes those of you who have been telling me for years you can't make enough pumpkins to sell at your fall harvest festivals well guess what it's mid it's past mid-may it's time to think about pumpkins it's time to start making pumpkins so you can get those from debbie de la cruz jayla designgifts.com we'll get the link for you all and we'll share that but so you can get my design for that cutter through debbie's website i want to do another amaco i don't want to do the sea salt on that though what do we think there's like 10 sizes oh she's doing 10 sizes of pumpkins what i didn't know debbie was going to do 10 sizes of my pumpkins okay so you can get my pumpkin templates my cookie cutters from debbie in 10 sizes what 10 sizes um i am i am oh what do you think about desert dusk it's a little thick kind of hides texture a bit wouldn't be my first choice it is dinnerware safe why not i can make another plate unless you guys have something um better maybe you can make one yes you can yours yours never trim out well um i mean it's a little fiddly to cut those pumpkins out by hand i agree so that's why we did the cutter to make it easier on everybody that'd be lots of fun amber topaz ah do i have amber topaz um i'm limited i'm limited to my mako glazes i don't i don't have a ton of them i have last year's 2020 glazes i have this year's new glazes and i have a few of the others i do have sandstone i have desert dusk those of you who know mako glazes tell me which one you'd prefer with the i mean this is copper so it's going to be green hmm because if not i'm just going to put clear glaze on it or my chun blue and then you just have to see it later green tea green tea again okay i got it here we'll do it so over here the thing's already open so we can compare the iron and we can compare the the um copper yeah we'll do green tea we'll see what happens i think it would be nice anyways i have to sign the bottom i will do that after it's glazed my channel i know this is what it looks like with my channel it's stellar i'll do another one and put it in the kiln for us to see but for tonight i'll do this one here so i'm just going to go ahead and apply the glaze to the back so if you're worried about contamination i've been thinking about that as i've been glazing if you're worried about it you can always pour a little bit of your glaze out into little cups or little deli dishes and use that if you're worried about contamination in all my years of making pottery i've never really been concerned with the oxides getting back into the glazes sometimes a tiny bit does go back in but it's never been so much that it's really changed the end result of the glaze so i think it's a personal preference amber tope has an amber quartz i'll have to try those i don't i don't coral sands i do have that glaze but it's packed up i'm like all right i'm like i know so we're gonna go ahead and put the green tea onto the copper and i am gonna put probably two light coats because i don't want to hide the texture i've never used green tea on texture it looks like it would break nicely but we're going to do do it this way and we have to give a we have to do a giveaway how are we for time why didn't you tell me my time time person is terrible want to do a giveaway while we wait for this to dry yes all
