I can't imagine that you know the the the sudden terror had been crazy. Thousands of families lives are forever changed after a wildfire ripped through Lahaina out of control on the West shore of Maui. Many people had to jump into the ocean for safety. I I have a lot of childhood memories of of job jumping off those walls just into the into the water for fun. David Kahlua is the owner of Bamboo Grove off South Carolina St. In Portland. But he was born and raised in Lahaina, so hearing the devastating news on Wednesday was earth shattering. It's an Old Town, mostly wood. All crammed together so like you know, hoping for the best but knowing the way it is. I can only imagine what's going on. Like many Islanders, David reached out to family and friends to ensure they were alright. But with the wildfires causing more than 14,000 power outages and destroying hundreds of homes and businesses, it hasn't been easy. He's praying for their safety and a message to know they're doing all right. Big concern, especially for my nephew, because there's no real communication and they don't know if the houses are still standing. Is also a Hawaiian native and is still grappling with the idea that much of Lahaina is gone, with some family still in the area. He finished his work shift at Bamboo Grove with 15 messages from family members, many of which he saw just three weeks ago. Many of those text messages included prayers and unanswered questions about what their future holds. Yeah, I I don't know. I'm just. I'm sad. And and just not knowing. Because we're so far away, the Oregon State Fire Marshall hasn't sent any firefighters to Hawaii just yet, but says they will consider the request if it's made. The Portland Salvation Army Division also says they too are on standby to help. Within a short period of time, we could probably find 20 or 30 people to go. But from our Oregon, southern Idaho region, these Cavalero KGW news, based on the video we're seeing, they may end up needing that help. By the way, there are organizations already set up to help Hawaiians. Recover from these devastating fires? Just text the text the word FIRE to this number on your screen 503-226-5088 and we will send you a link to where you can donate.
