tonight in the nation's capital the friday-night lights are on as the number one high school football team in the country Mater Dei bakes through two thousand six hundred mile trip from California to Washington DC to take on local powerhouse st. John College kickoff coming next on ESPNU you're watching the Geico ESPN high school football showcase driven by Buick we welcome you to Catholic University in Washington DC a fitting venue for these two catholic school football powerhouses as a talented st. John Steve from right down the road welcome to the number one high school football team in the country mater day from Southern California hi everyone alongside Craig Hobart I'm Jael tur this could be the most talent on one field we've ever had on the ESPN high school football showcase at Craig atop the list modern days quarterback Bryce Young who made headlines earlier this week flipping his commitment from USC to Alabama partner martyr day is establishing themselves as the elite of the elite and a big part of that is their quarterback tradition they feel they may have the best they've ever had in Bryce young a true dual threat who could hurt you with his legs but partner he also has the ability to get it done with his arm here on the play-action you see him freezes safety and a linebacker create that window with a nice throw over the corner for the score here you're going to see the toughness he's gonna sit in there watch him defender bearing down on him but he still delivers a strike to his receiver for the completion this is a player who's got a really nice arm strength good tuck here the offensive line does their job gives him a nice pocket and partner watching just drop it in there on the nice deep ball espn3 under quarterback going against a talented front core for st. john's all four guys future power five players Bryce Young had to get a good feeling of what it's like to be a college quarterback going against this defensive line and for me it all starts with mikail Sherman the Georgia rebel commit very versatile playing off the edge he could really shave the edge and get after the quarterback watch him though potentially tonight move around and create havoc from the linebacker position as well between these two teams forty kids that's right 4-0 holding an offer to play college at the next level and you could not ask for better temperature the nation's capital this is what Friday Night Football in the fall is all about modern day won the toss deferred so it'll be st. John's in black and red ready to receive we are underway in DC here but all three losses have come against top 25 teams of the schedule does not get any easier according to USA Today the polls we use for ESPN the number one team in the country so a tall task for soul Jay muhabba but they are battle tested coming into this game their fourth top 25 opponent and we are just in September out wide hand off again sticking with McDonald this time didn't even get back to the line of scrimmage nowhere to go Rayshawn Davis the junior 300 linebacker into the backfield quickly Craig off to a poor start here line to gain at the 30 Miami back to pass flushed out of the pocket lost the football modern-day it's in the end zone who's got it's a chance does it's called an incompletion raeshawn Davis got the contact you're gonna see Miami trying to get out of the pocket with the pressure and you're going to see Ray Sean Davis ESPN Judah 300 I'm backer the speed and the awareness you see the chop there to try to knock it loose outstanding effort of the 2021 problem and they ruled it at incompletion I don't think so yeah I mean his armors back it was not starting to come forward that should have been a fumble at a safety tremendous effort and heads-up play there by the ESPN junior 300 on backer here's st. John's little substitution on st. John's they have to be happy that they even get to attempt this punt because you don't want to spot the number one team in the country two points and the ball flag is down Cody apse no still on his feet we'll wait for the flag is EPS is knocked out at the 38 yard line this the likely key against modern a suspect nipple hunter George Alvarez we got a personal roughing the kicker [Applause] the bottom of your screen Jerry goes right to a first down and more for the LSU commit right on to rock him Jarrett Miami pulls it it's a quarterback keeper plenty of room so Jay Miami inside the 20 modern-day thought he gave it to the running back McDonald he kept it himself and he took it for a gain of 32 with his third long he set up a little bit more of an attainable field goal attempt back to pass throws it to the end zone it's Cod for us a chance touchdown Kaleb combs the junior wide receiver strikes first I'll scratch three when he can go ahead and strike for six early on watch him come back that was not his initial read he just dropped it in here absolutely beautiful pass have been 2 points for Mater Dei ends up being 7 for st. John's we are back underway Mater Dei getting their first touch of the ball quit see Craig with a boost of speed still on his feet finally dragged down [Applause] keeps it this time almost tackle to the backfield broke the tackle but still going to lose a yard or two here we showed you the great lineage of modern-day quarterbacks coach Bruce Rollins had coached most of them and he said that Bryce Young has the chance to go down the greatest of all of them an empty set for the Alabama commitment plenty of time quick trigger it's caught plenty of speed Kodi apps inside the red zone down at the 16 yard line it's a gain of 25 Mater Dei getting it done the penalty came after the play so a first and 10 throwing young picking up right where he left off pushed out a bound to the three or four yard line Tyron where Hudson and I would not take the football out of Bryce Young's hands in terms of just handing this off either QB keeper get him out the edge with a run pass option six coming for young throws to the end zone it's caught the Alabama commit finds Kodi apps in the end zone and Mater Dei cashes hid on the fourth of goal here looks right out in he had you're gonna see Epson create separation on the break outside and young nice short beautiful pass they're right on target he plays defensive tackle and running back here's his first carry of the game powers through the middle of the field lost his footing that fell forward for a gain of four pitches it out Littleton lost the football minor Denny falls on it a mismatch in the backfield in rail out tally falls on four modder day now the officials are talking whether it was a forward pass it absolutely was not it was a penalty to three yards behind there is nothing to discuss here that was a problem with the pitch it was behind a little tton is he can reach out and try to grab it they ruled it an incomplete pass that is the second wrong call that's gone against this modern-day defense st. John's get an opportunity to be able to punt the football Jorge Alvarez back there force eight shots Tony Epps back there lets it bounce it'll be mattered a ball at the 39 yard line kind of cross the t's dot the eyes if this is really truly the right fit Berman he felt it was plenty of time for young again fires over the middle it's caught Kiron where hudson a great grab and a gain of 22 see the eyes he follows watch him step into that throw and just puts it right out nice job I was a more of extending first and ten back to pass again fires caught and you guessed it three times in a row Kiron where Hudson [Music] you said it Craig right back to him it's caught what a grab Kiron where Hudson touchdown modern a went right back to him he had him matched up one-on-one the coverage is good too but you got to size the big strong hand the fender is there but just nothing you can do carbon where Hudson go up look how strong those hands are he's able to maintain possession just rip it away he was calming McDonald's right up the gut the running back spinning as he's hit took it for a gain of eight sets up a third and two needing to get to that 30-yard line to move the chains kept moving his feet needed to got about three and a half here's my Alva back to throw escapes pressure still with it 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage finally lets it go finds the running back Colby McDonald Oh after all that a gain of zero right back to the line of scrimmage we've done a lot of high school games Jay where those snaps kind of go array over the head low for a high school coach it's very comforting to know that you're gonna have a long snapper that consistently deliver it well that one was on the money that George Alvarez put too much on it here's young goes to the same sideline Falls caught turning upfield before he was knocked out of bounds in sophomore CJ Williams pressure coming young comfortably tosses it it's caught over the middle kodiak's with a burst of speed inside the 25 yard line before he shoved out of bounds but it's a gain of 37 it's Cameron liova but young keeps it himself flushed out of the pocket trouble look out and taken down in the backfield it was the Clemson commit Trey Williams who got there raised malabon for the 25 yard field goal attempt remember they had an extra point blocked earlier in this half and mallum missed it left only a 25 yard field goal and malam could not put it from the uprights and it stays 13 750 mater dei on the sidelines low snap miscommunication blown up in the backfield absolutely nowhere to go Ray Liotta Lee got in there first a loss of four sends out Jorge Alvarez last time he was out there a punt of 57 yards another strong kick from the Harvard commitment Marcis gets brought down at the 45 yard line so a short field upcoming you see the two young guys here in tongue a boat by Lola Todd had plenty of room to run a first down in a whole lot more and off to Quincy Craig right up the gut cuts in and into the end zone untouched Quincey Craig takes it 29 yards for a modern day touchdown the running backs really haven't been involved here they get it to Craig nice job on the edge good job blocking downfield shielding right there by the goal line outstanding job by Mater Dei team effort there along the line B to change said I didn't want to be a dinosaur I needed to get involved with email and social media and the modern day defense tape tackle not moving like dinosaurs there that group is looking agile for the two decades and off on second and 19 Colby McDonald trying to turn the corner wrapped up it shoved out of bounds had a chance to kind of develop a little bit there Ohio State when he had his opportunity really shine by Abba showing off the arm on a third and 10 picks up the first down Breck Kim Jarrett the LSU commit and now it is senior season third and 5 upcoming it's the number one team in the nation throwing with pressure it's caught tiptoeing on the side it's making two men miss still on his feed and tumbling forward rock him Jarrett showing wise the number three wide receiver in the 20/20 class getting outside getting a tomb right to the marker has to come back to a little bit you see the ability to tightrope along the sidelines and the acceleration that he has wanted to stop that clock so a second at 10:00 now for st. John's in the red zone my 'va back to throw surveying the field forced out of the pocket Thaksin runs leaps into the end zone for a st. John's touchdown sole J my Yabba a run of 15 and we've got a one score game in DC J John's of genes it's lost three games in a row granted all against top 25 opponents they have come to play tonight against the number one team of the country yep they know they get players out of st. John's that they've been out there and they've played against some of the best in the country young tries a deep shot incomplete great coverage Mordecai McDaniel just locked up getting a little bit kind of hands he early on but staying in position doing a nice job of finding the football play they went for fourth down their own territory so I would not count had any decision really nice hang time on that punt bounces it takes a moderate a roll to the 40 here's the BYU commit my Abba quick trigger looking for Jarett incomplete Davis once again he has been outstanding tonight ten seconds left until halftime you might have one or two more shots by Ava unloads a deep ball wide open it's talked say John's touchdown Gemara Curtis ties it at 20 see how quick things kenner cannot change here at Mater Dei is going to take a shot the Alabama commit has all day finally forced out of the pocket on the run Bryce Young lets it fly it's caught at the 12 yard line there's a flag on the play young looking down fields going to throw back to the middle and young and I was a vicious hit but I mean I was within a stet I'm een I know you want to protect the quarterback just going to run the football here almost a facemask penalty still on his feet at the 30s Cameron lyosha but finally taken down and we will finally head into halftime it's been a lot of fun st. John's is really not playing this game at all safe they're being aggressive with their play calling and in a position right here to start to half putting the lead that kick actually goes even further for a touchback don't dare him right nobody in the backfield with them throwing on first down it's caught by Cody apse turns up field shedding tacklers and getting out of bounds Cody apse a gain of 20 to start this third quarter they can pin their ears back for a third and tenth pressure does come young gets rid of it it's caught for a first down Cody app still dragging young throwing on second town has a man it's caught again Christian Dix is the junior 300 wide receiver good targets to throw at plenty of time again for young that offensive line has been terrific takes the time picks out a man CJ Williams through sophomore another first down in the passing game this one goes for a gain of 20 ability in a run going to the air again throws to the end zone it's caught for a modern-day touchdown CJ Williams watch it the receiver CJ Williams he's getting cushion he takes it right at the goal line five of ten on third down tonight here's my alpha wrestler coming and he lost the football taken down from behind Mater Dei might have hopped on it and it's the Monarchs ball Rayshawn Davis the junior 300 linebacker with the recovery after David Bailey poked it free see coming off the edge the opposite tackle turns his shoulders this is a defender the time just to get around the edge and then ultimately raeshawn Davis was able there to scoop it up he is at four five six seconds to think back there he's cash bid for four touchdowns already this time a quick hitter for the score touchdown Mater Dei Christian Dixon takes it 11 yards for the touchdown play action you can watch how quickly he pulls it pulls the trigger Dixon on the slant Antoine Littleton on the carry a burst of speed for the big fella a hurdle - Antoine Littleton still on his feet how about that from the 285-pound running back Antoine Littleton takes it 36 yards in style getting the big man rumbling we were gonna say what do you call somebody who moves like this is maybe number 7 the Winnebago get rolling down for you a third and eight here's my Ava good protection this time although it laughed him and he had nowhere to put it it was David Bailey who broke through lost 23 yards on that play so really backs up the punt but a great bounce from st. John's but this offensive line for modern day has definitely got the better of the st. John's front for plenty of time unloads a deep ball it scarred Cody ABS dragged down to the 25 but Bryce young showing off the arm a gain of 61 from the Alabama commit who put it right on the money to his senior wide receiver he's been off in the first half on some of these deep balls here you see outstanding deep ball blaze it right in on Epps puts Mater Dei right at the 23 yard line of st. John's as they look to add a third touchdown in his third quarter young in the end zone for a touchdown and it once again just young and his receivers making a look like pitching catch that is Bryce Young's eight straight completion in three of his last four passes have gone for a touchdown your playmaker out wide Jarrett locked up one-on-one lyova tucks and runs showing off the speed and getting down safely past the 40 with a flag down in the backfield is one likely coming back and it is old against st. John's for the triple the life expectancy of the NFL than a running back Bryce young back where he left off another beautifully thrown ball and it's right back to Cody abs great plays it has not even needed that portion of his game tonight pressure coming Trey Williams the Clemson commit there's a flag down but Trey Williams got all of brycey on on that one but with that pass didn't get the first down but over 400 yards passing for the Alabama commitment as he is just put on it displayed we're not even until the fourth quarter he could hit 500 yards passing you really can't blame there for what you've seen tonight the saying that he may be the best ever talking about Bryce young brick him Jarrett a burst of speed down those sidelines dragged down that should be a horse collar and it is yeah just quickly get the football in his hands in a watch out for a big receiver he makes one guy miss and watch him exhilarating see white there with the angle trying to stiff arm and then snap is perfect from the number one long snapper in the country and Reyes gives it just enough leg it's good for 35 so it's a two score game for what you want to execute he's got a star quarterback at Bryce young another completed pass his long to Christian Dixon to Junior 300 wide receiver Dease gets in the backfield of the Bryce young but this has been a heavy pass attack young back to throw again this time wrapped up and thrown down Trey Williams the Clemson commit watch how quick he is off the football the inside move little club able to quickly get in the backfield the kid wins he has not lost a game so far fourth and four nowhere to go turnover on downs my ala didn't stand a chance is too much pressure and it was Tyler naari on with the sack on the ground game this time took down the roof and into the end zone not even the official could deny Cameron liova for the modern-day touchdown the OVA he's the big back in that stable oh look at that push by that offense and watch out zebras down yeah imagine no that's a tough spot to be yeah yeah not been a good high school football showcase for ad the best in the biz delivering the numbers but obviously kamar not being kind 25 penalties 265 yards between these two teams by the way Geico player of the game has not been decided yet I'm curious you've been doing the high school showcase for a long time how about the acceleration Marcis yet puts an exclamation point on this one 67-yard touchdown for the junior running back 1st down almost lost the football Colby McDonald great job doll reel it back in at midfield after he moved the chains we got popped out right back to Jarrett making a couple bad miss and taking it out about his eighth interceptions LSU had an assistant here tonight there on walk-throughs did not at any point quit kept fighting back and fight now trying to put some points on the board that ends the game zeroes on the clock as we say goodbye to you from Washington DC for our entire crew Craig hopper time jail term otter day showing why they are well deserving of that number one ranking in the USA Today poll a resounding victory 53:24 have a good Saturday football everybody [Music]
