if you suck at backhand dinks and I say this in love like if you're missing dinks high if you're missing backhand dinks into the net then this is the video that you need to watch because this video is going to teach you how to hit a one-handed backhand dink so you stop missing so much and stick around till the end because I'm gonna share a secret secret a secret no it's not really just a more advanced tip that I want you to have footage for so when you go work on your backhand dinks you're not as bad as you are right now JT is going to disappear back over there with a paddle in his hand on the clap and all right let's get started today's video is brought to you by Selkirk so there's two big things to know with regard to having a good one-handed backhand ding let's talk about position first because if you don't have good positioning at the kitchen line you don't have a chance to be a good backhand dinker what I see a lot is I see players and if you've seen some of my other videos you've seen me talk about this they're sporadic at the kitchen line they're forward they're backward and when you're sporadic at the kitchen line when you Retreat it's the kitchen line you often get yourself off balance and anytime you're off balance and pickleball that's bad and you don't want to be sporadic because if you they pop one up you want to be holding the line to be more aggressive now what's the technique for having a good backhand Dink and this is I'm going to be I'm a righty speaking on the left side if you're a lefty who plays on the right side typically everything's going to be the exact opposite so you can flip it quick Interruption if you're watching this video there's a good chance that you were a beginner so I made something specifically for you it's a 10 video series 10 mistakes beginners make delivered to your inbox or email inbox one video a day for 10 straight days go to the description below click the link enter your email and you'll start getting videos all right back to the video all right so the second big thing number one was position number two is technique and the first thing we're going to talk about is from the ground up our lower body number one get in a stance if you're standing up you're not going to be as effective you're not going to be as athletic you're not going to be as good in pickleball if you're not in a stand so down in a strong athletic stance okay that's number one to have a good backhand dink number two is the ability to side step okay so let's do that a couple times side step so I get it we're talking footwork to start right we're not talking about anything with my arms I'm not talking about anything on my wrist I'm talking footwork sidestep side step side step so number one was being a stance number two is the ability to sidestep and then number three is the ability to drop step so say I can't take the ball out of the air and I'm gonna let it bounce a drop step is more of a diagonal step a drop a drop a drop so I'm here a drop drop you could have all your arm motion and arm straight locked wrist correct but if your footwork's not right it doesn't even matter because you're probably going to be off balance quick tip if you're gonna use drop step foot work you're probably in a somewhat defensive position a potentially vulnerable position take that ball back to the middle if you take this ball down the line it's the least amount of distance so if you miss it even slightly high they can attack if he's over there when I do a drop step high degree of difficulty to go across court and so often I'm going to pop that ball up and JT's going to punch it for potentially a winner here yeah so what I want to do if I get caught having to use a drop step often I'm just going to try to survive that ball and go right back to the middle and then get back strong to the kitchen line anytime you get off the kitchen line off the kitchen line we want to be able to maneuver our way to get back strong at the kitchen line so we can be on balance and we can be dangerous for put away so you learned being in an athletic stance you learn side step you learned drop step but it's not always that simple right your opponent's not always going to hit you a perfect ball that you can just sidestep or drop step two very easily a lot of times most of the time nearly all the time they're trying to win the point so they're going to move you around so what you need to understand as well it's kind of part two of the side step in the drop step it's the slide and side step and the slide and drop step okay so if I'm here and JC hits it over slide in side slide in side slide in side I'm just doing a small slide into a side step here's a couple examples of sliding drop okay slide and drop that's what we do with our lower body now let's talk about what we do with our upper body specifically what do we do with our grip what do we do with our arm our wrist and what do we do with the paddle face so let's start with grip I like to hold it real Continental okay so this is how I hold it it's like a handshake grip so when I'm hitting backhands I'm going to be using this now people will mess around with these different grips this is where I've been hitting with from this is where a lot of Pros hit with people will mess around but I suggest you start with the Continental grip okay a big mistake I see is too much wrist in a backhand Dink and oftentimes a bent arm so if you're using a lot of wrist and you're flicking the ball so you lose control with a a big wrist flick when you're thinking right so the more movement you have the less consistency you're going to have so I actually like what I read Dan Gingrich Senior Pro Player also a coach says he likes to think of the arm as a lever okay so it's a straight arm here if you watch somebody like Jay davilier this is exactly how he Dinks so my arm is going to be straight in this position right here okay arm is coming out straight arm is straight It's Not Bent okay and I want my wrist firm and I actually like to lock it in this position okay so I'm here so I am not moving or Swinging with my wrist my arm is straight my wrist is locked arms straight wrist locked okay arm straight wrist locked arms straight wrist locked arms straight wrist locked but I find when I keep my arms straight and my wrist locks I actually have more control okay I don't have a very aggressive I don't have a super tight hold on my grip okay arms straight wrist locked arm straight wrist locked so arm straight wrist locked is the paddle face slightly open okay so experiment with this so we have an arm straight a locked wrist and a face slightly open when you couple that with a side step and you couple that with a drop step or a side and slide or a slide and drop then you have really smooth dinking that kind of looks like this thank you okay this is your bonus should I give it to him JT oh yeah I'm giving it to him okay this is the slide and cross it's typically a more advanced type of footwork a lot of people don't teach beginners it because it can get you off balance someone you see you use this footwork a lot Ben Johns uses his footwork a lot it's a way that when you get off balance you can kind of survive that ball and get yourself back in the point because sometimes it's just hard to slide inside or to slide and drop now when I use this footwork I typically don't try to do anything crazy or too creative I'm just trying to survive that ball and get back strong at the kitchen line pull me out wide beautiful on this footwork one of the common mistakes that happens is one people get tripped up with their feet but two after they actually get to this position right they forget to keep their arms straight their wrists locked and their face slightly open that's number one the second thing they forget is the moment they hit the ball to actually push off this foot this is my right foot I don't want to keep my momentum going this way the moment I get to this position and I hit the ball I want to push off this foot and get back to neutral okay it's the same thing that I might slide inside I would hit this ball okay hold this one and after I hit it I don't want to stay here I want to push back right get strong at the kitchen line and be in a dangerous position now again I wouldn't recommend doing that footwork first get the slide the side step the drop step the slide inside the slide and drop okay but the principle is stay on balance get back to a place where you can be dangerous because as you move to higher and higher levels the game is won in this area it's hard to win a match when you're back at the Baseline and your opponents are at the kitchen so when you get to the kitchen you want to have the ability to reduce on four stairs make them make the mistakes and move your opponent around so that you can create offense and generate points for yourself yeah okay so that's the one-handed backhand dink slice how do you work on it JT five minutes before you play in the next Rec game if you do that five minutes every single day for 14 days guarantee you will get better at that of course you will you can't just expect to get better at it by watching this video impossible you have to go do it and if you want to learn how to hit an ATP around the post on the backhand side using similar footwork click this video right that's the video you're still watching if you're not I hate you
