today has just been one big wrath of the lich king day i've been up since 4am this morning doing update after update and this is video number four of the day this really is the biggest one of them all now we've got a huge update of hashtag some changes in the latest wrath of the lich king developer update this is going to be the first time i'm looking through them so you're going to get my reaction live as we break all of this down so first of all blizzard have said wrath of the lich king classic provides new opportunities to make a few changes that will improve the gameplay experience in the next chapter of classic wow in this developer update the world of warcraft classic team takes you through some of the changes and what they can mean for the future of classic i'm intrigued already changes i hope they're good some changes when world of warcraft classic first launched it followed a very strict design pillar hashtag no changes at blizzard we faithfully recreated world of warcraft as it existed in 2006 with as few changes as possible while still making it able to run in the more modern environment of 2019 but world of warcraft didn't stop in 2006 it continued to evolve and change over the years so we re-released the burning crusade expansion last year in 2021 and plans are underway to re-release the wrath of the lich king expansion however as we re-release these expansions we find the design pillar hashtag no changes isn't sufficient anymore with world of warcraft's expansions came design change to the game and some of those changes were not consistent with the way classic world of warcraft felt it's undeniable that the latest 2021 modern expansion shadowlands feels very different than the original launching game in 2004. where should the evolution of the game stop if we want to retain that classic feel even while releasing new content many players today choose to play classic well because they love that feel and don't want it to be lost the world of warcraft classic team has given this a lot of for and we would like to share with you today our design pillars for what we call hashtag some changes before we even get into this too deep some changes are good we can't see every single changes oh you said you weren't going to make massive changes i mean as long as they're sensible i think the community now accept changes but as i say as long as they make sense for the longevity of classic because ultimately we all want to play the game we want to enjoy it and we know things that didn't work in original wrath that should be changed you know it's a second chance for him to make those small changes to actually make it a more enjoyable experience the second time around but while also keeping the nostalgia ultimately we're playing it for nostalgia nurture and protect social experiences the first and most important design pillar is nurture and protect social experiences the compelling social experiences within world of warcraft why many of us first fell in love with a game to retain these experiences we want to help players build friendships and deepen their relationships within parties raid teams guilds and server communities online social experiences are a complex phenomenon and can be very easy to damage positive relationships build community reduce toxicity and forge friendships that have kept players coming back to our game for many years we need to nurture and protect these relationships and one very big key to this is providing social proximity in our game or what some cognitive scientists call repeat serendipitous interactions put a little more simply you need multiple interactions over time with the same people in a way that feels happy or beneficial classic wow provided this in abundance where you would often meet the same people from day to day while running through the stranglethorn jungle on your way to a scarlet monastery run or heading into blackrock mountain for a raid as we roll out new expansions for wow classic the pillar of protecting this social proximity helps inform our decision about features like dungeons raids quests phasing and tools for finding party and raid members when we make changes to wrath of the lichen classic we will make changes that help maintain social proximity and in so doing nurture and protect social experiences so here's the thing i do agree with that i do agree with their intentions behind it and what they're saying i completely understand the fact that yeah it is an mmo we should be social we should be grouping up when we see people and doing quests together and you know when we see people in a guild we'll recognize that guild because the communities are not so big that everybody's just a number but they're not so small that you can't find people to do things with if that makes sense so having a really good social experience in a really good community on the servers is really important but it's something that i feel like has got lost along the way even in classic personally let's face it you know that's why so many people are crying out for a random dungeon finder because that social experience whilst we want it and it's a good thing so please don't misunderstand what i'm saying it is something that we absolutely want but it has got lost along the way with boosts rmt gdkp's you know just typing in by looking at lfg bulletin board and then rarely talking to people in dungeons you know it has sort of evolved to now where we're just min-maxing everything we're not really bothered about social aspects we're not really bothered about having fun and again i'm not speaking for everyone because i know some of you are probably already angrily typing saying oh i just enjoyed the social aspect that's why i play the game i play the game to have fun with people that i enjoy playing with and that's how we should treat this game but i feel a large majority of us don't so another important design value for us is approachable and familiar we want you to feel like you're coming home to a place you know well classics combat pacing is more deliberate class designs are more familiar with fewer changes from patch to patch classic often tells simpler stories about a particular place and time we love to see players with intrinsic motivations found on exploration experimentation and wonder in addition to pursuing more powerful items and epic storylines classic wow provides players with a sense of agency over their character's destiny telling their own player story about how they explored and interacted with the world dungeons and raids and classic are most often defeated through careful preparation collecting consumables perfecting gear sets mastering class skills and memorizing encounter details we want to maintain that approachability and familiarity this pillar works to limit the changes we make as this familiarity can be damaged easily but it also encourages us to make changes when an excessively complex system can be reworked into something more elegant and easier to understand a good example of this can be found in the emblem system from rafa the lich king which became needlessly complex and confusing by the time we defeated arthas we're planning for each raid tier of emblems to work the same with one emblem dropped by the latest raids and used to purchase gear equivalent to those raids plus a second emblem dropped by dungeons and older raids and used to purchase less powerful items we're hoping a few small changes there can make the system more approachable for everyone but still feel the cherished role it served in the original wrath of the lich king so they've more or less described exactly how the emblem system worked anyway but it was just it changed with each tier so you you're going to start with emblems of heroism and emblems of valor and it was typical that emblems of heroism was five man heroics and ten ten-man emblems of balor was your heroic daily or your heroic random you know when there was dungeon finder and obviously 25-man raids so that's quite interesting the fact that they're just going to have it i'm assuming that emblems of valor is just going to come from all raids and emblems of heroism are going to come from all five man heroics and then as we go on to ulduar that will be straight emblems of valor and everything before it will be heroism so potentially we might only see two emblems types you know valor and heroism or triumph and frost whatever way they go throughout the entire expansion maybe i think that's a really really sensible change actually so the third and final design pillar of the classic wow team is the world is the main character we want you to maintain that feeling of being immersed in a living world of warcraft we love your exploration and your player driven stories and want to make sure you have a reason to visit various locations in the world over and over again gathering and crafting professions are important to the sense of the world and of its economy where you are interacting with thousands of players in a vibrant player community this pillar means we need to preserve the world we have created from excessive change you should be able to collect the lost pages of the green hills are strangled on to rescue the town keeper of darkshire from stitches or to return to the tempest cape and face off against prince calphus one more time and hope for that rare mount drop you should be able to tell your personally unique stories about your exploits even as you follow along the epic story of azeroth's most famous personalities so this has always been a big one for me and if you've ever watched any of my wild videos which i you know i do now and again where i speculate about things and be like oh no this is how classic could be you know where i've spoke about different systems that could be implemented such as mythic plus dungeons even in a classic capacity which i know is not everyone's cup of tea but i'm very much for keeping old content relevant because there's so much of it northrend is so small you know it's a very very small portion of the game overall whereas eastern kingdoms and kalimdor is massive there's so much space so many well-designed dungeons and raids you know even roads as well that they don't get utilized especially as the server progresses on so on the existing realms where you're continuing on to 80 all of that content yes we know people who do alts and stuff like that or you know new people that are joining the game that don't buy boosts as in from the store you know will experience some of that but a lot of it gets lost along the way so i'm not sure where they're going with this as i say this is the first time i'm looking at it as well that seems positive so wrath of the lich king itemization changes those pillars can come across feeling very abstract so we want to give you a concrete example of how we are applying them to changes for wrath of the lich king classic we're taking a hard look at itemization in that expansion and have decided to make some changes we think will help improve the experience taking our pillars and applying them to itemization we've come up with four goals for making changes to wrath of the lich king itemization i feel like i said itemization more in that sentence than i've ever said itemization before in my life foster a vibrant player ecosystem engaging in all raph of the lich king instant content so this serves as nurture and protect social experiences maintain a healthy density of players enjoying heroic dungeons throughout the entire expansion again that's nurture and protect social experiences and making it approachable and familiar preserve nostalgic itemization elements which also is approachable and familiar and the world is the main character and provide a consistent itemization scheme across all expansion phases which is also approachable and familiar that first goal is all about nurturing our world communities we know players in burning crusade classic have experienced a great environment with raiding players are active in multiple raids at all four raid tiers participating in both 10 player and 25 player braids and raiding with their alts and in pickup groups at all tiers we want to make sure that continues in wrath to further this we've been exploring a lot of ideas that we've decided not to implement at this time such as 10 and 25 man player raids dropping the same items heroic dungeons getting improved drops or increasing the starting difficulty of heroic dungeons one change we have decided to make is to increase the health and damage of monsters in knacks holy that is a big one knacks slightly tuned i mean they've only said they're increasing their health and damage so no new mechanics or anything like that but max is an absolute walk in the park it's like it's face roll so this is massive blizzard are really making positive changes for wrath of the lich king none of which i can even complain about it's kind of sad because i really like complaining i'm british our 2008 design intention was for it to be a little easier than the 2006 original but we missed the mark and it ended up much easier than we intended bringing up the difficulty a little bit will make for a more fun and interesting challenge while awaiting the opening of ulduar honestly that's amazing absolutely amazing for any of you that remember knacks from original raf or you've played anywhere you shouldn't you know knacks is very easy so this is brilliant news i can't wait to test it on the beta now to see exactly how much more difficult it's going to be the second goal is about making sure heroic dungeons stay attractive throughout the entire expansion the emblems and items they drop should always be valuable even late in the expansion they should also remain an interesting challenge throughout the entire expansion rather than becoming excessively easy as your gear improves we're exploring plans to add challenges to heroic dungeons as the expansion proceeds which would also provide more valuable rewards again absolutely amazing exactly what i've been saying in terms of keeping you know content that's just you do just for the sake of it so old content it just doesn't matter keeping it relevant even if they're only focusing on the heroic dungeons in wrath of the lich king so your northrend dungeons that's still amazing you know that the lines they're going along almost seems like mythic plus you know they might be thinking along the lines of well we'll make them more challenging each tier so you know putting it from heroic then maybe in tier eight it will be classed as mythic you know in tier nine mythic plus one you know what i mean so it progressively gets more difficult throughout the tears so it stays relevant for the gear level the only thing i will say here personally is that needs to be adjustable so you should be able to have it on its regular heroic difficulty from phase one or if you're a brand new character you haven't got any gear you need that sort of entry-level heroic five-man experience if that makes sense you're not going to want to go in and do this tier 10 tuned heroic when you haven't got any gear you just want to be doing the normal one so as long as that's actually it can be toggled on toggled off or changed or tiered or however you do it that's absolutely amazing we also want to preserve nostalgic itemization no matter what changes we make we will ensure all raf raids and dungeon items can still be acquired as well as their unique art finally the itemization and raid lock system for wrath of the lich king evolved several times during the expansion rather than changing puffers we want to make it more consistent this means that emblems should drop and work in the same way every tier set pieces should be acquired in the same way every tier and ideally raid lockouts should function the same way every tier to support this both 10 player raids and 25 player raids will drop emblems of valor at launch while dungeons will drop emblems of heroism matching the design pattern for emblems that was used in trial of the crusader and icecrown citadel and that's exactly what i said earlier and they can almost just carry that on forever can't they so when ulduar comes out now ulduar will drop emblems of valor knax will now drop emblems of heroism along with the five-man dungeons when tock comes out that will now drop balor and the rest will drop you know heroism so the top tier of content that you're doing will always be the valor it's interesting it's on both 10 and 25 man because that means you are going to actually be able to get your valor tier token pieces quite quickly really because you're going to get all of those 10 mans and all those 25 mans that's still a good thing there's nothing wrong with that at all they just need to add you know extra valor gear and turn the previous tiers bala gear into emblems of heroism gear if that makes sense as you move through to tears but brilliant we hope that this glimpse of the in-progress itemization design helps you better understand how we plan to adhere to these pillars as we move forward each time we consider a change to wrath of the lich king experience we will keep these pillars in mind nurture and protect social experiences approachable and familiar and the world is the main character if the change doesn't serve them then we won't make it but if the change can strengthen those pillars we will carefully consider it as always our goal is to deliver the best possible world of warcraft classic experience to you our dedicated players we look forward to your feedback and we'll see you in northrend i can't
