if you're using After Effects forget rotobrush because today I'm going to be showing you this new plugin called mask prompter that's going to be completely changing how you're going to be masking in the future it uses Ai and it's so much faster than rotobrush it's as simple as this so I have this shot set up where we have two spaceships from our sci-fi pack so first off what we're going to do is we're going to duplicate hitting Ctrl D or command D on our keyboard on the background footage with Kevin in it and we're going to put it above R2 floating spaceships um then we're going to go over to our effects and presets and search up mask prompter and we're going to put it on there so there's a couple ways that you can actually initiate this but for this one I'm going to show you with the points method so we're going to check mark one of the points and you have a couple here and then it selects something but that's because it's at uh the corner here and if you move this around it sees that it's trying to guess what you're trying to select here so I can probably select this building I can probably try to select that building but if we move it right on top of our Kevin here we can just put it right there now we can um play forward and and this is really cool because when we're playing forward it's so much faster than rotobrush because it's doing it in real time and for a shot like this I could just leave that point there and it stays on Kevin the entire time now if Kevin if I put this point let's say here and Kevin moved off of the frame what you're going to have to do see it's not clicking on him anymore you're going to have to animate it by going to your point here and adding uh clicking on the stopwatch to create a keyframe and then moving down the timeline and sort of making sure he is selected the entire time there's also something called negative points so if you go to negative points here and you click on one and you move this and say we didn't want his head or or his neck or his um pants you know depending on what you want to do you can you can go in and select different things that you don't want or say it's grabbing onto a building you can put that point on top of a building but we don't need that right now so I'm going to deactivate it so there's a couple other options here like Edge enhancement so small Edge enhancement and basically that's just blurring off the edges just a little bit uh there's High basically trying to smooth it up and guess uh what you want keyed and depending on your settings uh you can change this to whatever I might leave it to medium and see what that gives us um now you're probably saying okay now how is it going to be cutting it out you have to change change the output method instead of to Overlay and you can actually change the overlay strength so you can you know actually see what you're masking here um and also there's overlay hints which is where it's just going to show you where your point is um but if you change this to matte you can actually see the mat and you can also turn on transparent and then as you can see we now have and if I solo this layer Kevin by himself I also like to add the effect key cleaner on top of mask prompter because it softens things up a little bit and makes things kind of nice so I'll put in key cleaner here that just makes the edge a bit nicer and then we can also add something like a simple choker or something to this and choke the output just a bit so we're not seeing as much sky on his chin I might add on top of this like a refined hard matte and when you do that I'm going to just turn off every single setting except for decontaminate Edge colors and then you can see whenever I turn that on um turn it off it's taking the edge of it and extending out the edge a little bit to make it look a little bit cleaner and then I can take these spaceships and 3D track them into the scene by um just going to track stabilized track camera let it solve then once it's solved I'm going to create a solid in camera in the general position I want the ships to be then I'm going to make uh the spaceships 3D layers place them in the scene accordingly I'm going to turn off the visibility of our track solid as well and it's done look how the mask prompter is so much faster than the rotoscope tool and that in this particular way easy okay I'm going to show you another example all right so we have this shot here of Lily walking and we want to put this robot behind her so again we're going to hit Ctrl D on our clip of her and put it above our robot all right and I'm going to show you a different way of using mask prompter this time so I'm going to add the effect mask prompter to our clip here and instead of uh using the points method we are going to make a box with the mask box or the rectangle tool and if you're not seeing the rectangle tool go over cold and click down and click on the rectangle tool and then we're going to mask just above her just like that and then we're going to go over to mask prompter effect and go to the boxes and go to path and go to the first one and hit mask one what you should see is the thing that you want to be selected is selected then we're going to hit M on our keyboard and animate The Masks path by clicking the little stopwatch let's go all the way to the end of the clip and it's doing actually a pretty good job of following her but I'm just going to for for for sake of showing you uh move this over now it could have been like she was over here and it's catching things that we don't want to see but we want to move it right on top of her just like that and it's good to just go into like the middle of the clip and see if it's good and then go into the middle of that you know keyframe like here and here making sure it's good going to the middle of these two keyframes here and checking if it's good so we do the same thing we're going to we can add edge enhancement let's see if medium or high looks good um and it might be too blurry in my opinion so I'm just going to leave it to small for right now and see if that looks good and I'm going to change it to untransparent just like that and then we can add key cleaner and we can add a refine hard mat if we want to get rid of these um bright edges here um by turning off everything so the feather to zero the contrast to zero our reduced chatter to zero and turning off the motion blur and that looks pretty good then it's the same exact thing where we uh let's take the bottom layer and the 3D camera track it so going to right clicking going to track and stabilize and clicking track camera let it solve once this is solved I'm going to find a good ground plane so just hovering over here finding a good ground plane I'm going to click this one I'm going to hit set ground plane in origin and then I'm going to click again and create solid in camera then we're going to make the robot a 3D layer it's going to get all wonky but that's okay we're going to place it and I'm going to place it where the 3D plane is and a good way of knowing if your robot is in the right position is if that 3D solid if it's intersecting the 3D solid then you know that it's in the right spot so I'm going to just move him up to clip the floor just like this and I might rotate it to fit the frame a little bit more and then we can just delete or turn off the visibility of the solid now if we watch we have this masked out thing and it's so fast and quick and simple yeah I just really wanted to show you mask prompter I've actually used it in a couple real visual effects scenarios and it's a really cool tool I'm hoping you want to start implementing it as well in your stuff and that was it hopefully you learned something please remember to subscribe like and comment on this video If you learned something and uh check back for more tutorials in the coming future foreign [Music]
