you in 1968 the surgeon history chat Hornberger using the nom de plume of Richard hookah collaborated with the writer Wilfred tars Heinz to create the book mesh a novel about three army doctors based on his experiences with the 8050 v Mobile Army surgical hospital during the Korean War two years later Robert Altman used the book as the basis for a movie about the fictional 2077 unit he cut the number eight thousand fifty five and a half two years after that mesh came to life again in the form of an eleventh season television series in thirty-five years ago today that show culminated in the most-watched series final in television history you are on Harvey change channel and here are some thoughts about the show won't get you a section eight I'm alder and Jamie Farr served in the US Army under Hawkeye Pierce was in the Army Reserve for six month in Korea fire listed and was stationed in Japan when Red Skelton requested his services on his years o tour for career win Rogers Trapper John McIntyre joined the US Navy for time as a sheep navigator and Mike Farrell EJ Honeycutt served in the US Marine Corps [Music] according to screenwriter Ken 11 or some shoes were the result of creative genius he actually got a lot of their plot lines from conducting interviews and research from doctors nurses and patients who lived through the Korean War experience they chose the best stories they could find focusing on the most emotional moments that could also be used in comedy some of the storylines were so outrageous the screenwriters either had to turn them down or abandon the idea completely thinking no one would believe it Robert Klein or was a famous comedian at the time was asked to be on mash when the show first aired he was picked to play the part of Trapper John but decided to turn down the role in the end despite rumours and reported that he regretted the decision to not take the role it turns out he was still okay with turning down the major role a clean Stevenson is the man who all remember her playing the role of Blake but the television show was adapted from the 1970 feature film mash and then the movie Rajat Bohan also played the same role Stevenson TV series died on February 15 1996 and Berwyn from film died on February 16 1996 what's more that death were eerily similar to each other both men died due to heart attacks when Bowen died his family was concerned that the news would get him mixed up with the reports of Stevenson death so they waited the week before announcing it though some say the family waited out of respect and two-owner the connection Stevenson had with Bowen [Music] a screenwriter Larry Hubbard was the one who was tapped to convert mash the book into mash the movie and ultimately mash the TV series he had lived and worked in Hollywood for a while before he was sick of the city moving to dreary London but when he was asked to write the pilot for the show he jumped at the opportunity and wrote the entire pilot in two days for that he received $25,000 captain Honeycutt played by Mike Farrow was always known as BJ in the show but the real name behind his initials was never given at least that's what most people will remember there was one episode however where hokey went to extreme lengths to learn would his initials stand for and towards the end Hunnicutt explains that his parents names are B and J claiming that this is the reason for his odd name but whether it is actually true was never officially made clear the show was limited to filming everything in one day on the ranch per episode as a result writers could draft up no more than six or eight pages for the scenes depending on the time of the year and how much daylight they had in fact once daylight savings time was over they were forced to film any exteriors short on a stage at Fox Studios as you might imagine is one day restriction made it difficult for directors to capture all of the emotional comedy the audience was expecting and yet somehow they still managed to put it off [Music] most viewers would remember the voice of Todd Sussman his eCos would resonate the holes as he would make announcement on the PA system throughout the show however many of the diehard fans may remember his brief cameo in 1974 episode operation nose lift Sussman played the role of private Danny Baker who was caught girl who because of his huge nose in the episode hockey code in an old body and plastic surgeon to perform the surgery in exchange for a date with the barracuda the plot thickened because elective surgery was against natural regulations so the episode was centered around whether or not private Baker would get his new nose does anyone remember what happened bonus fact max klinger was also only supposed to be in one episode Jamie files characters also supposed to be a in fact many of klinger's early dresses were based on Hollywood movie stars like Judy Garland Vivien Leigh and Betty Grable the screenwriters changed him to heterosexual who cross dressed to try to get himself kicked out of Korea allegedly the Klinger character was influenced by comedian Lenny Bruce's claim that he got discharged from the Navy for claiming to have homosexual tendencies in the show's penultimate eleventh season episode as time goes by the characters gathered items for a time capsule to bury at their military medical unit in Korea this gave Alan Alda the show's lead actor inspiration to do a time capsule in real life he believed someone would dig it up 50 or 100 years later and would find it interesting in some way the crew was totally on board and the real-life time capsule was officially buried but their secret and then last long but two months after the studio's sold the land a construction worker who had started excavations when new office building found the capsule rumor has it that the worker wasn't very impressed and decided to ultimately get rid of it when Rogers who played Trapper John left mash in 1975 he was sued for breach of the contract problem was he never signed one the show wanted him to sign a morality clause which stated he could be suspended or fired from the show at any time he felt the clause was antiquated and in the believed was fair insisting he deserved to have the same long term privileges as the show's producers so he refused to sign it for reasons that remain unclear Rodgers was permitted to continue his work on the show despite having never signed a contract and as a result the charges brought against him were ultimately thrown out and cold one of the reasons that the acting was so good in the show mash was because a lot of time the actors weren't even acting the directors of the show wanted to keep certain things secret so that when they were sad and sad the reactions by the cast would be Channing one of the most famous examples of these came at the end of season 3 when it was announced before the entire shocked cast and crew that Henry Blake died what else have we missed comment below with your favorite moments from this iconic television show and together let's relieve a piece of television history all over again friends family and even complete strangers [Music] take care friends [Music] [Music]
