Well Deus Ex: Mankind Divided sequel died for this, I hope it was worth it....
I'm so astranged to their expectation of the game doing well as a guarantee. Rainbow Six Siege is doing great but unique and good gameplay kept the hook. I'm quite sure if ti wasn't doing well, it wouldn't get the updates. Why are these companies always expecting that players will glue onto their game just like that?
Support should be guaranteed but you can't expect games to do well by gurantee. You need to see how people react to it and if there's actual player retention. Problem is, companies want to steal you from other game that have that retention. I don't think GaaS are working because there are already others that exist, reminds me of the MMO craze back in the day.
I really wished that the game was mroe akin to a normal singleplayer, acted more like the Arkham games instead of a generic looter shooter.
I still can't get over how bad this game looks. I don't mean in general, I mean the aesthetic is just so painfully boring my eyes glaze over just looking at the game footage in this video. I can't imagine staring at that on my TV or monitor for multiple hours at a time.
I just don't understand how they took comic book characters, known for over the top costumes and blindingly bright colors, and turned them into...mud.
I'm not convinced that it would be a success even if the gameplay loop was good. It's just so offputting.
Just think, in an alternate timeline this game was made to be similar to Spiderman PS4. A good open world with a great single player story and no microtransactions...
sigh
Some more stats about the Avengers flop:
Before the Forbes story, more people were playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on Steam than Avengers. Don’t forget, Square Enix shelved a new Deus Ex game indefinitely to rush into the live service craze.
I’ve heard that UK sales numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt, but in the month of September, Super Mario 3D All-Stars outsold Avengers. Never mind that it’s a collection of three previously released games that came out in the middle of the month.
Hawkeye was supposed to be released “within weeks of launch” (Crystal Dynamics’s words, not mine). It’s been about a month and a half and we still have no word on a firm release date.
I don’t know why Jim hasn’t been using the term “early AAAccess” as of late. That’s exactly what the live service business model is. Square Enix, EA, etc will never put these games on true early access because that’s too much time and money on their end. Just rush it out the door, buggy as all get out, with monetization as the only fully fleshed system, and let the saps play test it for you. To my knowledge, the only AAA live service game that was successful this gen was Monster Hunter World, and that had no paid costumes and came out as a fully fleshed game.
So...that intro...
Jim confirmed for Tales Of series villain? Chopping down Yggdrasil and all?
The fact that a game based on one of the hottest properties of the now ended up so disposable shows how the industry is fucking clueless.
Don't suppose there's any chance of them ripping out all the marketplace BS down the road like Shadow of War did when peak sales were done?
We need to big up Sad Roger.
Hear me out...
My theory for why developers can't learn that you can't vomit out a pile of garbage, get a huge player base, and fix it later is that they ARE learning it, but slowly.
First we have PokemonGo. It's basically a Pokemon-themed skin slapped on top of Ingress or w/e it was called. You couldn't trade, battle, breed, level up, EV train, change movesets, or do fuck all. But if you squinted and tilted your head juuuuuust right, it was Pokemon. It breaks mobile gaming.
Then, Anthem and Destiny. Brand new IPs. Why? That's not why PoGo worked. No one gives a shit.
FO 76. Much loved IP, and ESO is doing okay, right? We don't have to try. Niantic didn't try. Doesn't work. No one gives a shit.
If I'm right, I think Marvel's Avengers might be the last one they try for a while. The MCU has a fucking huge fanbase. Sure, within gaming Fallout has a big fan base. And gaming is a bigger and bigger part of the entertainment market. But it's not Marvel movies. So we target a fan base that knows less about games (so they can't tell it's garbage), which is way bigger than the fan base for any particular gaming IP. I bet we can do a PokemonGo, only without letting people download it for free. Nope, no one cares, DOA.
I think that's as far as you can go to try to squeeze another PoGo into the market. Biggest franchise anyone's tried yet, least gaming-savvy fan base (excluding whoever the fuck is still buying FIFA games), and it failed spectacularly. I think the 'shovel shit out and promise it'll work later' was only ever going to work on mobile with Pokemon, and I think this was the best possible attempt at doing it for PC and console.
But we'll see if I'm right!
In any case, I can make this comment half-right by adding: Thank God for Jim.
When the pitch for your game starts off as "Anthem, but with the Avengers," it might be worth thinking, for a moment, if Anthem was successful. I guess they didn't do that part.
In all seriousness, I don't think anyone is surprised by this outcome. Did anyone actually want this game?
