Before forming SpaceX Musk stayed at Zubrin's house for several days to discuss "how to make humanity a spacefaring species" and he has remained an avid supporter of The Mars Society since. The conference is very much worth attending in person (with room shares, student/early-purchase discounts)...it will be in D.C. next September where participants will join formal lobbying efforts with Zubrin et al. Musk spoke at their Sanford conference and again when it was held at JPL, during which he accepted the Mars Pioneer Award.
It's worth every penny to go and buy the newest version of the Mars Direct book. It's updated with much more current information and acknowledges all the findings about Mars since these old presentations. Plus it gives a good view of terraforming and colonization in the second half of the book.
Personally I found the discussion on the versatility of nuclear thermal engines interesting ( ~30:00 ), particularly the idea of a Martian nuclear thermal lander using compressed, liquified CO2 to provide 280s impulse at 2800K for global Martian mobility with a convenient 1 month refuel time. Apparently it takes ~100 times less energy to compress atmosphere than it does to synthesize methalox.
Not sure what are the mods' take here, but I don't find this post relevant to this sub. There is 0% SpaceX content, nor is this new information.
