there is nothing more frustrating than needing a plumber because if you do you're probably out of hot water or you got a leak but how do you know if the plumber you call is honest lisa guerrero and inside edition's i squad put a bunch of plumbers to the test every house has a hot water heater and if it breaks down you may soon be taking cold showers that's when you call a plumber but how reliable are they we rented this house in Phoenix it's a nice typical home then we asked expert plumbers Marc gable house and John Onorato to tamper with the hot water heater they say any plumber who knows what he's doing should be able to figure out the problem we're going to take this wrench and we're going to loosen this nut a little bit Marc works for Marlin services John for the sunny plumber all they did was unscrew this nut to create a leak other than that they say the heater is almost brand-new and in perfect condition it's a good solid installation there's nothing wrong with it watch how easy it is to fix just tighten the nut problem solved if somebody told me I needed to replace this water heater I'm getting ripped off yes next we wired the house with hidden cameras it was time to call some local plumbers my water heater seems to be leaking hi boy how are you the first plumber to arrive was a guy named Roy from the local roto-rooter franchise roto-rooter has been in business for 75 years our experts monitored the visit from another room Roy quickly spots the leak a few minutes later he's back to give me the bad news what is wrong with it a good event is a defective tank a defective tank yeah really Roy remember the only problem is a simple loose nut and you thoroughly checked it out and I definitely need anyone yeah Roy says we need to replace the tank because it's cracked water coming out here that is your tank is bad yeah our experts were shocked he didn't even make an effort to try to fix this just is very disappointing and it's very shocking so how much is this all going to cost five hundred dollars and four cents to replace the wire yeah it was time to tell Roy who we are why I have to tell you my name is Lisa Guerrero with Inside Edition and I'd like to know why you would charge me five hundred and seven dollars and forty four cents to replace a water heater that's brand new well you got a crack line there are you sure that that's a cracked line well water is coming out here okay could you just go like this and take a wrench iron man did you go like this oh absolutely and then just tighten it like this because look it's fixed there's no leak in their new Roy continues to insist the tank had a crack and needs to be replaced we're done here sir we trying to rip me off note in a statement the roto-rooter franchise owner said it appears this incident deviates from roto-rooter protocol and is an isolated action so what the same thing happen with other plumbers not these guys watches eight plumbers in all do the right thing they not only find the loose nut but they quickly fix it I don't need any water heater most of them only charged us a nominal service fee for their help Oh fantastic how much do I owe you for the 85 and this plumber was such a good guy he didn't charge us at all oh no no you did the right thing you came in you tighten the nut and you weren't even gonna charge us anything that's amazing thank you for doing that but of all the plumbers that came to our house this guy was the worst Doug works for just plumbing services instead of fixing the problem he simply takes pictures of it he's using an iPhone to diagnose problem his balance oh not repairable The Temper have to be replaced I have to replace this entire tank and look at this he had this brand-new water heater in his truck all ready to install the cost 665 today a lot meter time to tell Doug it wasn't our water heater that failed it was him you were just gonna charge me six hundred and sixty five dollars for a water heater that I don't need well nope you do need well if you want to say you don't need it then you don't need it but you do need it your water hit your water heater has failed it has failed internally don't you think you and your company that just happened to have a water heater in your truck we're trying to scam me just now and trying to sell me something I don't need no Doug decided it was time to take his leave and off he went experts say if your plumbing problem is an immediate you should always get a second opinion before paying for any repairs and if you like some other helpful plumbing tips just come to our website Inside Edition calm back with more
