welcome to this episode of mark menendez bass tv and we got troubles falling water how do you deal with falling water we're going to point that out to you on this episode of marketing bass tv [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] just last week kentucky lake was back to fishing great again rising water levels and temperatures sent bass to shallow water ready to spawn a week later mark is back but the water's starting to fall and mark knows with falling water it's going to make things challenging today so he opts to start on lake barkley after a quick trip to the famous canal that connects both lakes he picked a small pocket off the main lake and head toward the back fishing what's left of some flooded buck brush trying to piece together today's puzzle regular general rule that i follow is falling water always points fish out and what i mean by that is with this jungle of cover that i have i've got these little points of buck brush those fish are going to pull to the last piece of cover in which they feel comfortable on now we've had extreme falling water since i've been out last it's fallen about three and a half or four feet and it may have pulled them on out behind me and we're gonna have to go and drag a little bit out there on the next point so my next move from these intermediate points is to move right out there and fish those points right out there and falling water always points fish out they don't like it when their roof gets pulled over their head like it has here we had the water run up in the bushes and um it is as soon as it crested they pulled the plug on and they've been pulling it ever since had a great day of filming late last week and that water had just turned so those fish were positioning very easily and we caught a ton of them well now i've got the inverse of that i've got the last of the water in the bushes and um so far i'm going to have to do something else i always like to have a show kind of pre-planned on what i'm going to use not this one we're going to have to we're going to make some adjustments and fish different things like i thought i was going to be able to do we're going to salvage today those are tough days so we're going to see what we're made of today you know these bushes coming up here in just a second have a little ditch running out there so two little points on either side and it's the last it's got some deeper water there in the mouth of that little ditch so that may be what i have to do is is run those little points if not run willows willows grow deeper than buck brush do as a general rule and then from there i'm going to have to back up and fish the old bank and look for gravel and rock transitions because these fish were trying to spawn and now the water's falling so hard um now if that water's falling so hard they may have backed off out there in that five to seven to eight feet so when i do this i start shallow on anything on the outside the points of buck brush the points of grass whatever i've got then i'll go to uh the actual land points will be my second choice and then thirdly will be verticality either either a riprap bank a marina bank a dam wall or channel swings in lakes that have real real strong channel swings anywhere i can get shorter distance almost like wintertime fishing where those fish can be comfortable around deeper water and not multiple areas and pieces of cover he's fished near the barkley dam wall using a square bill to deflect off wood cover with zero bites he's also fished a spinnerbait in a round buck brush in the back of pockets with the same result he slipped over to a vertical piece of cover a rip-rap wall to see if anybody's home and he slowed down with his trusty texas ring i'm gonna try to sneak away with it boy that was a nothing little bite there he's got tattoos on him nice bass come on up here that was a next to nothing bite we started on the bushes we backed out the points now i've moved to something vertical and maybe we can salvage this now a good fish right there that's 15 incher right there just a 15 incher that was not much of a bite i promise you not much of a bite like i described got to find that verticality this is my this is my number three choice these fish feel safe with that vertical bank so we're gonna shift gears now see if we can get some more bites you know this stern little game hog is such a good bait it's a good pre-spawn bait it's a good spawn bait and it's a great post spawn bait mark makes a switch from the riprap bank one bite and one fish that's all he has to show for the day the falling water and bluebird sky combination has made it extremely tough mark is now combing a shallow spawning pocket still on lake barkley he's looking for a few spawning fish that haven't quite abandoned their beds and also fan casting around looking for a needle in a haystack little guy sitting here looking at a fish make a cast and a little guy eats it i'm looking at a fish on a bed right there he's very spooky and i don't know that he's catchable but we might get a shot at him here oh yeah there he's got it that one snuck up on me get up here he tried to get away with that one he knocked snot out of that game hog little guy just perfect you can see it's a gravel bank a little fat belly fish these are fish that have just backed up from all this fallen water waiting for it to calm down so they can get back up there and do what they want to do which is spawn and make babies that one jerked it i thought for a second that might have been a real good one this whole situation with this falling water makes everything so difficult you can see i've got yellow flowers right here and we know when the water was up we know what was in those yellow flowers that's one of the kentucky and barkley lake specials that's the old bank line right out here on where those end and i'm sitting out here in uh seven feet of water and that fish was way out off the bank off that break a little bit and this little bait is just such a doggone it's a workhorse for me on tour i've caught them all over the world with this thing i probably use 2 000 of them a year that's how many that's how often i fish this deal but it is truly truly a consistent fish catching bait with so many techniques as a jig trailer as a texas rig as a carolina rig it really catches them not all the reality of actually catching a limit of fish is very slim marx decided to make another adjustment and fire up his yamaha outboard and point his skeeter fxr back to kentucky lake he's going to fish similar areas is what he did a week ago this time he'll focus on lead banks that have lay downs buck brush and other covers still with water on them time is ticking away but mark and his game hog have a plan it'll be boom robust decent fish how about that right in that little drain the last little bit of deep water right there [Applause] that's a keeper right there get up here nice bass right there in that little drain right there pitched up there a little bit shady a little bit deeper water she pulled out there good fish right there good one having to do lots of different things today lots of different things i'm gonna try to slow this boat down the wind's pushing us we'll try to make another pitch right back there was a good bite is it didn't even didn't even hesitate the last ones to pull out on this fallen water she had not spawned yet i'm looking see this said all these bushes had so much water on the other day one of them could have homesteaded and you might be able to see one or two this little piece of wood right here is a key deal see how it's out here off the bank that is a very typical lake barkley setup that i like to throw to it's actually a piece of a lay down i can kind of see it off the bank water's coming down fish moving out there ought to be one on this pitch down this remember falling water points fish out you know where they've been you've got to figure out where they're going to i'm really shocked i didn't get a bite off this piece of wood right here it's the right kind of stuff now i can be real quiet with this wind at my back in this shallow water don't have to use a trolling motor a lot big key to fishing shallow [Music] like several pitches here because i don't believe that little fish was by himself right there okay i guess i'll jerk little guy got me three times but i finally won the war with him he's been caught sarah but look he's coming right out of you can see the ditch right there you can see the ditch going back through the trees the last little bit of deep water he's moving out of there with it there may be more than one fish right there little guy i never felt him bited the other ones popped it pretty good regret and get that thing back out there as quick as i can i believe there's another fish right there but again that little bit of extra deep water right there is the key just a hint deeper very difficult conditions today falling water high bluebird skies and an east wind they're an east wind i your granddaddy always said the fish bite the least when the wind's out of the east how'd he know now it's absolutely water can throw anglers off but when added with bluebird skies an east wind and finicky bass that want to spawn it can just be downright frustrating mark has slowed way down using his power poles to help him dissect any cover he can find pitching and casting to any cover willow trees buck brush you name it the key has been finding small ditches or pockets of deep water around the shallows he's not caught any big fish but he's slowly starting to get more bites than earlier in the day he'll focus back into small pockets and shade lines hoping to catch enough to finish out the day all right again on a point on a point there's a decent bass on a point that's a good little little fish you can see probably been back there but had set up right here where this point ended and tried to swim off with a game hog good little fish right there all right well i mean that one jumped about six inches he really hit it you know when you've got these conditions shade becomes a real factor and as you've seen the last three fish have been shade oriented this one's kind of a shady side of some point one under a dock one that little drain back there those fish that are waiting to bed or have backed off as it will fall in water shade becomes an issue they remain a heck of a lot more active but my targets become much more limited again shade is the key keeping these fish a little more active it's a bright day it's been bright all day long well that one was fooled me that one fooled me had over a piece of brush and it just went he's not even hooked that's the perfect example for a straight up straight shank hook i never set the hook i just started reeling and drilled that fish good enough to get him in the boat five out gamakatsu straight shank that's a lifesaver i'm not gonna get a bite [Music] a little more wood right around here get one more [Music] there he is there he is there he is man that one's on fire good fish right there come here come on come on all right another little keeper fish that one right there was hard to catch it took me three game hogs worth just to catch him good bass right there how about that coming around in the world coming around yeah he's got my other part of the game hog right there in his throat you can see one of my baits down his throat sit down in there he stripped me once i missed him once [Music] i don't believe that that was the one that i missed there just a second ago one of them i believe there were two fish there i believe there's a bed right there i like to never caught up to that fish little guy yeah what's that little fella doing but i sure am glad to see him i am glad to see him he'll be a big one here in the future he'll be a big one we need more of these in the lake i'm so happy to see these smaller year-class fish in here the lake's gonna be just fine that many yellow flowers this much rip-rap they're ready to eat there's no doubt about it they're ready to eat get it around one good fish hidden under there well he's about done i believe well i drilled him with that big five uh gamakatsu right there ditch ran right through here is the last piece of cover right there just a 15 incher just just
