that well it's lovely being back it's it always is you know and i mean i remember i remember well actually the first time i saw i was uh first time i i came here i was i was on a greyhound bus ticket and uh but the second time was to play in and then i mean it wasn't long before i was playing in this place and i'll come back in here and it's it's a magnificent feeling you know being back in this this time cleaning it's it's always too much but um i remember thinking you know back then i was well i was i was a young dude i suppose you could call that but now i keep thinking i ought to retire exactly precisely my friends see because then you know what what's better than this i mean playing songs that to people who want to hear them it's wonderful i mean i can't be beaten really but i shall fall over i mean before very long anyway so you'll be spared to rest um now what we can do is try a news talk and that's all it can be it's just an attempt all right fellas let's give it a shot [Music] i never got the elbow [Music] just telling you before you go only telling you just so [Music] [Music] i [Music] now that's how to date and so am i i said excuse me excuse me [Music] have you gotten my rock [Music] my baby it's the time they took us to poland what was that about i thought what a joke [Music] just some know it all with the new regime there to show us all [Music] how to build a team he said so what do you think we're doing [Music] i said don't ask me i have no idea they all laughed at that that was pretty funny [Music] actually excuse me excuse me [Music] my [Music] i could order you a toasty just like that one all the same in plain white bread when you're dealing with a toasty what do you prefer [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] i never got the elbow i'm just telling you before you go the only tell me [Music] just [Music] [Music] ah [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] excuse me [Music] [Music] my [Music] have you got my [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] yeah you are very sweet thank you very much [Applause] [Music] so um when i was that age a young young thing and i used to hitchhike everywhere and and i used to looking back on it it seems lunatic to me now and i hitchhiked to greece when i was 16 or 17 or something and that's what i used to do up and down the country all the time and [Music] college and different jobs and things like that and just trying to trying to get something going even later on when i was trying to get a band together and then in the middle of a bunch of jobs i went to college and and because i tend to do things the wrong way around and when i finished college i saw an ad for a for a band you know a guitar player so i joined this rock band basically that's what i did and we were playing in penzance which is as far south as you can get in the uk all right on the south coast and it was christmas eve and i remember as you know i was watching a beer bottle gently spitting through the the air towards the stage and thinking i might take tomorrow off and hitchhike home up to newcastle i mean not not not thinking that it was 500 miles away because then i didn't think really of very much at all and so i got up at four or five o'clock in the morning and start hitching and just to make things perfect of course it snowed during the night and this truck actually stopped and um he was taking me up the country right up the old day one there where what was he used to go and uh by mid-morning or late morning he's he's got a turn off and drops me off he's got to go have his christmas so we shake hands and say goodbye and it's he's dropped me off it's a roundabout and it's it's about 20 30 feet above the highway and i can see snow in every direction big snow fields in all directions nothing but snow it's a beautiful day it's it's christmas day i mean it's the bright blue sky and sun shining and and there was not one car in in sight anywhere or one truck or one bus or one rabbit anywhere and uh there was just the three stupids it was me my back and my guitar and and but i remember not really being too much worried about that then remembering that i'd made this choice you know to uh live this way and and you may have realized you probably realized by now it takes me quite a long time to get around to doing anything and uh and so i i i just kind of finished this song about that day it's just kind of recently completed so we're gonna give it a try again it's called matchstick man okay [Music] all right tom [Music] so so there he was then penzance to play christmas eve into nowhere now early morning christmas day he's hitching home to jordyland last night the snow came just my luck who knew the hell do you think you are climbing up into that truck with your old bag and your guitar and a year you would be vagabond no one invited you you know that statement up in the dawn you've got 500 miles [Music] [Laughter] saw the driver now must drop off his load snow's still in thick on the ground leaves him on high crossroads where he can see four miles around the sun the sky is blue and everything is white and bare and not a car comes into view [Music] there's nothing moving anywhere in a year you wouldn't be back upon [Music] no one invited you [Music] planes [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you very much indeed well this is just going to be a little song about an ordinary foot soldier trying to get you know in napoleon's army trying to get the hell out of russia [Music] and um it gives me a chance just to uh to introduce this ridiculous band that i put together over most of my life just come out from his guitar from his uh from his keyboard mountain to play beautiful guitar which he can do and beautiful bass which he can do or produce you a beautiful record which he can do or to juggle which he can do he tells us or can do kind of a chap guy fletcher the next guy is a fellow you all know as a guitar master of course we all know him as that and but he also plays a whole bunch of instruments and we had a count up in fact i play one instrument uh richard t plays about ten the band altogether plays 49 and it's like that back there you know but anyway he's going to play a pazuki on this song richard bennett yeah ricardo nice shirt ricardo and uh next to richard is a star from uh well there's two stars actually from the uk from the brass department and he's brought he played on the album beautifully and it's been just great having them along on this trip as well so he's brought his his uh he's brought his trumpet he's brought his cornet and he's brought his flugal horn indeed is todd walsh [Applause] and uh all the way from australia comes this guy but he works in england and in fact works with tom a lot because he plays to the same brilliant standard and he's brought his tennis sacks he's brought his soprano sacks he's brought his clarinet and if you searched in his little bag there you'd find a little whistle which uh somebody's teaching him how to play and i don't know who it is and i don't much take i don't take much notice of all that because you don't want to get too deep into it all you know but he's he's already had a public debut uh and and apparently well of course him being him playing the way he plays i'm sure it went very well indeed graham blevins i know there's three big guys in the band here and uh with the celtic drum roundy's neck there is uh it's they're called the baron and uh i fell in love with that instrument a long time ago and i vowed that i would learn how to play it yeah and uh i i i failed at that and i i have a draw for things like that and it's just got a label on it just says that didn't work and it's it was in it went in there but this guy's very clever he's played with me for many years on different things plays a lot of instruments danny cummins and um yeah and now this guy's been with me for a lot of years too as well because he's the number one call drummer in the uk and uh he's a proud welshman so we have we're going to wales now and where they call people who are called ian we are actually called yanto so he is a large welshman on a small american drum just doing the other half of the drum kit on this song but janto thomas yeah and then the next big guy on the big instrument it is well i i thought about the same time as i met richard in 96 i was in a little club and i thought i'd made a big discovery because i was looking for somebody to play string bass because i was writing songs for string bass as well as bass guitar anyway i thought wow this guy plays both he plays like a god and it's a tiny club i've made this big discovery and of course then i found out pretty quickly that he was just having a night off and was relaxing with some pals and and when fat would spend most of the days you must spend most of the days and nights in the studios recording with all sorts of huge stars and but for some strange reason he stuck around ever since uh 96 from madison wisconsin a fabulous musician glenn wall and then again from the same period 96 somebody said to me do you want to hear the best keyboard player you've ever heard in your life i said yeah yeah and that's how it turned out to be you know the best keyboard best pianist the best hammer dog and in fact any keyboard that he happens to be passing and that takes his interest he tends to be a complete and total genius on it and i just still don't understand why he's hanging around but all the way from long beach and dressed appropriately jim cox [Applause] now the next two i heard on a record many years ago and they've been with me ever since i said to who i was with these two guys i've got the most beautiful souls for music it's unbelievable and you know they they they have another job actually which when they go off without me they go off and do shows all over the world and they they they investigate guinness um it's a scientific uh pursuit yeah so they can you know they'll they can dispense very valuable advice in that direction should you require it just talk to them afterwards um but this guy can play anything and he's he's played small short which long whistle medium whistle he's the finest wood flute player in the world he has got he plays beautiful uh tenor guitar pazuki even plays the baron and everything you know you name it he can play it mike mcgoldrick yes those those that the plumbing that he's got in his hands at the moment is the inland pipes how wonderful they are and next michael is a guy who would make you sick actually because he's just as good on on all the whistles as is michael just about i would say i mean i hope it's not a competition between them and you know plays sit and plays berserky plays all those instruments as well but is world famous of course in scott you know not just in scotland where he's from but his famous right around the world for his fabulous fiddle playing john mccusker okay [Applause] it's not like introducing the trio you know it's not like it's not like it's emerson like palmer [Applause] it takes a while but um thanks for bearing with that and richard let's uh start there um i'll count in because you count in an american i'll count in in english okay right all right that's so mean richard all started and and then the rest of you just yeah good luck good luck all right [Music] my [Music] rip fade in helsin's moscow burn it's causax terrorists feast by peace our dead are strewn a hundred leagues [Music] though death [Music] like rats we steal each other's scraps [Music] save my soul from evil lord i heal the soldier's heart i'll trust [Music] what dreams he made for us to dream spanish skies egyptians said all the world was ours we marched upon our little cult command and i lost an eye and asked [Music] my what true love awaits me still the flower of the equine [Music] [Applause] [Music] with bones [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] i'll pray for her who prays for me safe return to my belt fronts we parade these wars with and all we know [Music] foreign [Music] i'll trust in me to keep me [Music] [Music] [Music] but [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] hmm thank you so much you're very sweet and i've told you that already but um when i was a kid all i wanted was one guitar dad dad dad please i want a guitar you know and now you know they're everywhere [Music] you can tell me your troubles i'll listen for free my regulars trust me it seems you can come and see uncle to get through the week leave your pleasures with me to redeem some folks sell their bodies politicians go pawning their souls which doesn't make me look too bad don't you know me with my heart full of my yesterday's broker a watch with no face [Music] all battered bits of the movement all over the place [Music] [Music] for us and knuckles and banjos are out on the town at the knees up in teddy boy's room in the gold block and tackle tells the time upside down this rock and roll well i don't know dead people's wedding gifts walk out the door a clarinet squeals [Music] [Music] start playing their polkas [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] handcuffs [Music] [Applause] guitars could shatter the windows [Music] if one of us dies love you i think i'll retire see the boys and our beautiful girls the garden of eden no gates or barbed wire who knows [Music] maybe i won't have a backpack to go either way redeeming your pledge dear i'll keep it for you it's not gonna go anywhere but your soul that's [Music] repair it or die i was told it's a wonder to me i still don't understand why i haven't survived [Music] [Music] heartful [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Music] hey [Music] hey [Music] [Applause] [Music] um [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] um hey [Music] calm down [Music] foreign [Music] bargains have been struck between [Music] again i don't know how it happened it all took place so quick and all i can do is your latest [Music] and only my heart got broken [Music] never [Music] so quick and all i can do [Music] is [Music] let's call for alcohol [Music] [Music] there's nothing in there [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so there's gotta be a record for you someplace [Music] you've gonna be on somebody's books the lowdown picture of your face [Music] somewhere your fingerprints remain concrete and it's your face i'm looking for on every street lady killer regulation can i tell you as i'm standing next to you she threw herself [Music] exploded [Music] on every
