[Music] hi welcome back to my channel today we're going to be talking about the books that i read and the month of march and april i believe i didn't do a wrap up for march because it was just [ __ ] sad going to include those two books and then the rest of the books i read in april what do you guys think of this like more like dramatic dark candlelit lighting situation let me know what you think i apologize if this video is late i have a lot going on at the moment and yet at the same time almost nothing going on if you're new to my wrap ups what happens is i talk about the books from my least favorite to my most favorite anyway let's get started i'm going to start off with the only dnf i had for the two months and that is the hollow tree by john james brochton the hollow tree by james broadgen is a novel about this woman who's on vacation with her husband right and they are you know having the time of their lives she was kind of hesitant but she was like you know what fine let's do this and she ends up losing her hand in like a really horrific accident like it's really kind of gross like it gets smushed off of her arm it's gnarly it's gnarly so she loses her hand and she's kind of like optimistic she's like whatever it happened i guess life has to go on at this point like she's not gonna dwell on it basically as time goes on she begins to feel strange sensations in this hand of hers and it's almost as if she can feel dirt and like mud through her like fingers from her missing hand she doesn't have a hand there she can't feel mud with that hand because it doesn't exist so our main character rachel begins to understand that she seems to be pulling this girl name mary through a portal into their world so i started reading this book in march and i thought that i was gonna finish it in april and i just and i did not pick it up at all i can't i got probably 60 to 70 percent of the way through and i just said [ __ ] it like i have no need or desire to pick this up again and continue reading it like i liked it but the desire for me to finish it the desire for me to understand what's happened to these characters is just like not there and i really don't give a single flying like i really enjoy rachel i really enjoy her perspective but at the same time like it's not enough like i need more and it just wasn't giving it to me quite frankly the plot was getting redundant it was getting repetitive i didn't really feel antagonized by the antagonists i'm just really not feeling it i might try his other books because i have heard really really good things about them but this book for me was an absolute no no thank you my only dnf for the last two months how exciting my least favorite book technically of the last two months is one that i thought i was gonna [ __ ] love honestly the books that i thought i was gonna love turned out to be the books that i actually [ __ ] hated so the book that i'm talking about was actually our patreon book club pick which is like even more of a bummer because the patreon book club we just keep choosing turds like i don't know what the [ __ ] it is we just keep choosing turd after turd after turn it's all just turds we're living in a pile of turds how many times can i say turds anyway i'm talking about the lost village by camilla sten this is a thriller novel it's about this girl whose grandmother is i guess kind of like the survivor of this like village they were there and then they [ __ ] weren't they were just gone every single person in this village she and a few of her co-workers go to this village in hopes of creating this documentary and when they get there [ __ ] is crazy and creepy and weird so before reading this i saw a few people talk about how it was like really disappointing and like how it like just completely like [ __ ] up their whole mood and i get it i get it 100 like this book had so much potential so much [ __ ] potential for this book and yet it's trash let's start from the top the characters are not compelling i don't give a single flying [ __ ] about any of them like not the main character in her shitty motivation not her like friend slash love interest baby not her like old friend not her old friends but i don't give a single flying [ __ ] about any of them not only that it goes between the present and the past and i don't give a single flying [ __ ] about anyone from the past i don't care about her grandma's sister ankara her grandma's [ __ ] mom i don't give a [ __ ] about anyone like so that's a big problem that's a huge [ __ ] problem for me and probably also for mrs sten because she probably wants people to [ __ ] care about her [ __ ] book but i don't give a single flying [ __ ] about her book or her [ __ ] characters i'm so mad i'm more angry than i thought i was like uh before talking about it to the patrons i was like okay yeah i kind of feel like lukewarm about it like i don't really i'm like i'm like not that upset about it but when i started the conversation i just got really heated and i was like oh my god like i really [ __ ] care i am angry that this book did not do what i wanted it to do my biggest issue with the lost village and why i cannot and will not recommend it to you to your friends to your mama to your daddy none of them i'm not gonna recommend it to anyone because it's boring the number one rule is just don't be boring don't be boring that's it that's it you can have a stupid-ass plot you can have undeveloped gross characters you can have shitty stupid writing but if your book is not boring if your book is constantly pulling up the stops then these things can be forgiven but because this book is not only boring it has terrible characters that don't inspire any any compassion or empathy none the book markets itself as the blair witch project meets midsummer ball what this book is nothing like the blair witch project it's nothing like midsummer at all there is no [ __ ] comparison i was confused about that and then one of my patrons was like oh it's marketed like that because it's originally written in like sweden and i was like well for [ __ ] sakes is this the only [ __ ] thing like something was written in sweden and translated into english and your first [ __ ] comparison is mid-summer what that makes no [ __ ] sense like literally like literally stop listen camilla stan please hear me out don't write books that suck can you imagine like that's the end of the video cut upload the first half of the book feels like you're running through mud feels like you're running through cement that's hardening like it's so boring nothing is [ __ ] happening the entire [ __ ] time and then halfway through like a little something happened but it's still not enough for you to actually give a single flying [ __ ] and then the last 20 to 25 of the book is like action action action death death death like and but it's too much because the whole [ __ ] book you're sitting there waiting for these things to happen a lot [ __ ] sooner and when they do you're like well it's ridiculous at this point it's actually ridiculous it's too much not only that but like the explanation and the end is just so corny also there's like weird like magic things what what are we set in reality are we set in like a in like a magical land is this like a haunting like what's going on mrs stan because i don't get it i don't understand because i wanted to like your [ __ ] book and it was just awful it was just not a good experience i did not enjoy i think a single moment of it maybe like the first 10 pages i was like okay this has potential and then after that it lost me it completely [ __ ] lost me too bad i guess i don't recommend it like at all don't waste your money because i wasted mine thirty thirty dollars for this for this [ __ ] i also forgot to mention and excuse the fact that i'm coming on here in a voiceover but i forgot to mention that the book also has terrible terrible terrible mental health representation like the the characters that are presented as mentally ill are just like seen as [ __ ] like idiots and like barbarians and like savage it like it's crazy so that's not great uh yeah just thought i had to mention that um still paid thirty dollars for it though so that's cool awesome okay the rest of these books are i either loved or i thought they were okay and this next book i thought was just okay and that is if i disappear this cover just inspires me to do better in life as for the actual book itself it's just fine this is another thriller novel about a girl who listens to this podcast like all the [ __ ] time and she loves his podcast so much and she loves the girl who narrates the podcast her name is rachel and our main character whose name i forget because she's literally so forgettable sarah my name is sarah i totally forgot that sarah our main character is kind of obsessed with rachel and like feels like inspired by her right and so rachel one day just goes missing she stops posting she's nowhere to be found she's nowhere can't be rachel rachel rachel where'd that [ __ ] go rachel okay well i guess so i guess i'll just go to rachel's hometown to her family's estate and uh pretend to be someone i'm not so that i can go live with them so i can investigate her disappearance even though i don't know this [ __ ] no one has filed a missing person's report and nobody seems that concerned that's basically the book sarah goes to this like farming kind of community and sort of like infiltrates it and like tries to figure out where rachel is through the guides of working on a farm with horses for rachel's parents this is fine like it's not as bad as the lost village but i'm also not gonna like suck a stick or like suck its [ __ ] because like i'm not that into it like it was fine the characters were whatever you could argue that sarah is kind of a cliche and being that she's kind of like a thriller's wet dream or like favorite kind of main character where it's like lonely female who's kind of delusional who like doesn't really have any close relationships and who is trying to find themselves in some way through some other means like it's very cut and dry cookie cutter stereotype type of [ __ ] i thought it ended well because it left me like kind of questioning everything but for like the first 75 of the book i kind of just felt like meh i was like okay cool i guess like i don't care like i didn't care to be honest i didn't care like i was still reading it i was still kind of interested but i didn't really care and then the last 25 i was like okay okay you got me you got me a little bit so i would recommend it if like if it seems like your kind of thing but if it doesn't you're not really missing much you're really not missing much next let's talk about a book that i buddy read with sean from storytime that is the last final girl by stephen graham jones this is a horror novel about a girl named lindsay lindsay is a final girl she got away from this serial killer called billie jean it basically talks about the repercussion of lindsay's descent into the final girl this is very much like a middle-of-the-road book for me like i'm not crazy about this i don't think it's like my favorite thing to be honest i really really really appreciate the way that stephen graham jones wrote this book i love the way it's [ __ ] written but like the only good indians it's very like first half beautiful gorgeous wonderful the second half no no i don't like it i don't like it first half of this book is so funny it's so like tongue-in-cheek it's so like aware of itself the second half of the book just like loses me because i get confused i literally got confused like i don't know if i understood everything that happened in the second half of the book i love the references to uh to like slasher films i love the references to things like chainsaw massacre and friday the 13th i love the like gore i love like crappy pretty girl who's like virginal who like loves horses and [ __ ] who ends up being like the perfect girl to be like the final girl i love that [ __ ] but the second half the second half like what there are certain points towards the end where things are resolved and yet they're not resolved at all like there are certain things where i'm like okay but like what about what about what about what about him what about hitler is no money gonna you you you talked about it but you what what's gonna okay all right it could just be me maybe i'm just like a dumb [ __ ] i don't [ __ ] know maybe i'm just [ __ ] stupid maybe i'm just [ __ ] dumb i don't know but i really wanted to like this and i really really [ __ ] with the first half of it i love stephen graham jones writing i love it but the second half i just i just didn't get it i was confused so so yeah that's just that's just the way the cookie crumbles i guess i also read with riveting reads and sean from pastory time in april we read the knight of the mannequins by stephen graham jones wow does she love it i do so this is the first stephen graham jones book i've read that i've actually really really liked his other books that i've read i've been like yeah they're good but they're not perfect i'm not like dying for them this i kind of really really [ __ ] with we like the whole thing this is following a group of teenagers who throughout the summer find this mannequin they take this mannequin they do like little pranks with it to each other with to their family to their friends mannequin is almost like a friend right and then after the summer they kind of just like forget about the mannequin after one prank has gone completely wrong something weird starts to happen where it seems like this mannequin is starting to kill people off starting to get revenge on them for forgetting them over the summer i can't think of a way to describe why i enjoyed this as much as i did i like that it's an avalanche let's start there let's start at the [ __ ] basics i like that it was a novella and i really really enjoy the narration of the main character the way he spins things is really really interesting and the way that stephen graham jones wrote it is really really well done like i said for his other book that i read i really love his writing he writes with a [ __ ] knife is that a cliche to say i think that's like literally a cliche anyway i think he does really really well with this there's not much to say really kind of book where it's so short it's so quick that you can't really say much because then you'll be giving something away i'm just gonna say that i really [ __ ] with the way it's written with the way that it's laid out with the character there is one thing i don't like about this book which is why it's not a perfect read for me but i don't know if i can say it because it's kind of like a spoiler type of thing i mean it has to do with like the plot because that's not what you think it is like looking at this book looking at the title and the cover it's not what you think it is i'm telling you that but i still really like it i still really [ __ ] with it and i would still recommend that you read it so i think it's really good also stephen grimm jones has this way of describing gore and like brutality that gets me dude every time he does like a kill scene i am just like flabbergasted i'm like blown away because it's just so beautiful and so vivid the last novel i want to talk about is my favorite book of the month and that is the patient by jasper dewitt this was recommended by merce from harper's in the trees she talked about this book a few months ago and i bought it immediately and then i kind of sat on my shelf until recently i was like i just need like a quick novella because they seem to be effective with me this month so i picked it up and oh my god i loved it this is told through like blog posts i think it's made to feel like a mockumentary where you're like suspending your belief and accepting this is like a reality but basically somebody is posting on some kind of like forum or like reddit or something about their experience with a certain patient they're talking about their early career and how when they started at the specific hospital there was one patient that everyone seemed to be kind of afraid of kind of scared of so this dude is like i'm a doctor and like i'm gonna figure it out exo exo gossip girl he was like i'm kind of like new but i feel like i could maybe crack this or like help this guy in some way and so he starts to see him as his patient and oh my god it's like it's a short book but it's so well done dividing the chapters into these like blog posts where he's telling these people this story and he's like reflecting on it like this part of the story especially it's like really difficult for me and like i haven't talked about this with anyone it's like really interesting and it really pulls you in and it really solidifies the character for you because there aren't many characters in this book there's maybe like five or six different characters and like that's it the whole thing has this like sort of mystery to it where you're unsure of like where this patient is like from what's really wrong with him it's just i love it i love it so much spooky it's got mystery to it and it's really really well done so short you can't say anything really about the plot because it's because it might be giving something away but it's really really good and i really really enjoy it i think you 100 have to read it it's just it's just fun also it's blurbed by brian keane those are all of the books that i read in the last two months there are six novels that i've read and that's not great we don't love that i hope i can read more in the next few months for july i think what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna do a 30 day 30 books type of challenge um so if anybody wants to join me for that that'd be kind of fun we could make it like a group effort what do you think it might motivate me to actually do it and actually read uh because my reading is so [ __ ] behind schedule and i need to i need to get on it but again i guess i guess the more i think about it the more i'm gonna worry about it the more the less i'm actually going to want to do it does anybody else feel like that where like the more you convince yourself you have to do it the less you actually want to do it and the less kind of fun it becomes i apologize if a lot of my content has focused on either like old ideas or me talking about books i haven't actually read and less focused on like reviews and that kind of thing it's just been awful it's been awful the last few months and i've been struggling with my with my mental health and like my stress levels i've just been through the [ __ ] roof um so i apologize if it's been inconvenient for you so before i go let's talk about a few manga that i read in this in the last two months which similar to the books i read it's not a lot so first of all i read a sign of affection volume one this came out recently it's about this girl who is deaf and this dude who is you know able to hear meeting and then just kind of having like instant chemistry it's very cute i like it a lot and i think if you like sort of cutesy romancy type [ __ ] you would be really really really into it at least i think you would in my opinion i really really like that and then i also picked up volume three of something's wrong with us this is like a murder mystery dark romance series i think it's about this girl whose mother was convicted of murdering someone uh specifically like this big family's uh father like like head person so she goes to prison and she dies and her daughter uh sort of like goes undercover i guess to become part of the family because of an opportunity and she becomes basically married to this dude who is the son of the of the guy that was murdered by her mother apparently a legend might not have happened it's really really good um the characters are really really compelling and the plot is really going places i'm really into it and then the pistela resistance we have blue flag volume one oh my [ __ ] god i love this so [ __ ] much it's so [ __ ] cute the plot is basically so far as far as i know this [ __ ] likes this [ __ ] and this [ __ ] likes this [ __ ] but i think this [ __ ] likes this [ __ ] like it's like it's a true love triangle where none of the crushes align no one likes the same [ __ ] person like you know nobody is reciprocating any love at all but i'm so into it because this guy is super hot and all i ever want to see is hot dudes kiss other hot dudes so i'm hoping that they get to have their moment i love it so much it's so [ __ ] cute if you like manga if you like queer [ __ ] i'm telling you you have to you have to pick this up it's adorable i think you're really gonna like it that's the wrap up thank you so much for stopping by for saying hello i hope you're all doing really really well i hope you're staying safe i'm gonna be posting a tbr soon even though what's the [ __ ] point i don't stick to it but i know it's kind of fun to dream it's kind of fun to hope i'm also going to be posting a video about my favorite booktubers if you have any favorites that you think i should like check out or list leave them down below let me know who you're like really into i'd love to know also don't forget to hit subscribe because we talk about spooky [ __ ] we talk about creepy [ __ ] we talk about
