[Music] big things are just over the horizon massive architectural projects that will leave you speechless and inspired oh and they're sure to leave you jaw dropped with just how expensive they are these are some of the most impressive mega projects and structures that are either being built or are already out there for you to check out be sure to bring a camera because we bet you're going to want to document seeing these wonders and hey who knows in 100 years maybe one of these babies will become a new wonder of the world only time will tell on that one first up we want to talk about some of the biggest and most impressive bridges ever constructed and you can bet that these cost way more than that old rickety wooden bridge near your house in fact these bridges hold the world records as the longest bridge ever built the longest road bridge ever built yes there is a difference and the world's longest continuous bridge over water when it comes to the longest bridge on earth that title goes to the superstructure known as the danyan kunshan grand bridge in china it is a mind-boggling 102.4 miles long that's the length of two and a half road islands laying right next to each other hey when they say it's a grand bridge they mean it it is a part of china's beijing shanghai high speed railway and it took just four years to complete it crosses right through rice paddies a section of the gangster river delta and even traverses a small portion of the yangchin lake in satsu while it may hold the title of the longest bridge it certainly ain't the tallest at just 328 feet it's by no means a skyscraper but it definitely ain't nothing to sneeze at when it was all said and done it cost a whopping 8.5 billion dollars to build let's talk longest road bridge as in you can actually drive this bad boy that would be the six lane 34 mile long bangna expressway in thailand if that's not enough to convince you that this deserves a spot in this mega project video then maybe the fact that it used one million eight hundred 000 cubic meters of concrete should definitely solidify its placement it cost an impressive 1 billion dollars and one of its primary functions in addition to filling out the bangkok skyline is to help the commercial development of southern thailand with those six lanes flowing smoothly we have no doubt that'll happen but our last bridge really captures the imagination mainly because it's the longest continuous bridge over water you heard that right this is the lake pontchartrain causeway in southern louisiana this massive superstructure is actually two bridges that run parallel to one another and clock in at 23.83 miles and is supported by 9500 concrete pilings for a record-breaking bridge it took a surprisingly short amount of time to complete only 14 months and when it was opened in 1956 it had cost 30 million dollars if that doesn't sound like a lot remember this was 1956 people today that would be 286 million bucks not convinced this bridge was worth it how about this stat for you after completion it cut the travel time from north shore to new orleans by 30 minutes that's a lot of happy commuters speaking of looking to the past we've got two of the most impressive megastructures ever built we want to share with you and they're old we're talking old old the coliseum in rome was completed in the first century and measures 620 by 513 feet in its prime this masterpiece of architecture was able to hold up to 50 000 screaming fans who would gather to watch all kinds of events but the most notable would have to be the gruesome and grisly gladiator fights of old but land battles were not the only armed fights at the coliseum believe it or not by pumping water into the arena mock naval battles were able to take place it was dangerous it was brutal and historians estimate that over 500 000 people lost their lives in all these different battle royales what would the coliseum cost today well a similar structure was built in las vegas and cost 142 million but when you add in labor costs and the 1 million tons of travertine needed to complete this project estimates clock a modern-day coliseum at 435.5 million that's almost as much as philadelphia's lincoln financial field which cost 512 million bucks hmm that extra money must have gone to more bathrooms to accommodate the 69 176 people that the link can house next up is the ancient city of petra in jordan you probably are familiar with its famous exterior which was featured in the movie indiana jones and the last crusade as the final resting place of the holy grail in reality though the inside of this beautifully carved masterpiece has far less booby traps and while not the final resting place of the holy grail it has been purported to be the location where moses struck ground and water spewed forth hey what can we say the movie got it right that this was a holy ground but they just got the miracle wrong back in the 6th century when it was first constructed by the nabataeans it was a cultural and commercial hub and it flourished with a population of 30 000 petra took 500 years to complete and it was carved out of red sandstone sadly the city started to decline as trade routes changed and a series of earthquakes occurred starting in 363 ce and this beautiful carved city was slowly abandoned now it acts as a tourist attraction we say check it out it's a literal city between a rock and a hard place we've talked the past but what about the future what superstructures are on the horizon ever hear of the jetta tower well it should absolutely be on your radar after all it's reported that it will be done soon originally planned to be completed here in 2020 it has received multiple delays we're willing to cut them some slack though considering this tower is a mind-bogglingly 3280 feet tall it's located in saudi arabia and will be the modern marvel that sits in the jetta economic city which is designed to be 57 million square feet of commercial and residential goodness just how much does it cost to create the tallest building in the world a lot as in 1.4 billion dollars a lot if you want to be the best you got to pay for it still interested in mega projects coming up well look no further than california's upcoming 77 billion high speed rail that promises to quote change how californians travel and we don't doubt that for a second plans for this rail have been in circulation since 1981 which everyone hoped would offer high-speed service to eight of california's largest cities you can bet the goal here was to alleviate some of that terrible la traffic don't know what we're talking about well then you are one of the lucky ones my friend but this project has seen its share of speed bumps it's turned out to be much more costly and construction has taken much longer than originally intended in fact the plan here was to divide this undertaking into two phases with phase one being the completion of a 520 mile long stretch of rail connecting san francisco la and anaheim phase two would extend the route to sacramento all the way down to san diego increasing the rail to 800 miles but this is gonna take some time phase one was slated to be completed in 2029 but now it's been pushed back to 2033. the rail is currently 13 years behind schedule but don't worry it's coming and when it's here hopefully roads won't look like the opening scene in la la land because let's face it with how the traffic is currently you really could get out and sing on the highway oh you're interested in current mega projects well how about the tallest building in the world right now that you could visit today that would be the burj khalifa in downtown dubai it's shaped like a needle and tops out at 2 716 feet tall inside you'll find 200 stories of luxury including the armani hotel dubai designed by the famous fashion designer giorgio armani and it contains his world-famous minimalist style and japanese hardwood floors the rooms are fully integrated with ipod controlled mod cons these are the rooms of the future right here if you're a vip guest you're greeted by your own personal butler and will receive spa treatments robes and even toiletries room rates here start at 625 dollars a night but they better be that expensive to pay for the price tag of this massive super skyscraper which cost 1.5 billion dollars to complete ever hear of a hyperloop train no well you must not have been keeping up with elon musk lately the virgin hyperloop one is our next superstructure we want to talk about and it will run right through the heart of missouri from kansas city to st louis when completed travelers will be able to traverse 250 miles in 30 minutes that's because the hyperloop train works by putting a pod people ride in safely into a vacuum sealed tube then the pod is levitated magnetically above the tracks and when it's off oh it's off hyperloop pods get up to 700 miles per hour and as you can imagine this technology ain't cheap this project will cost a massive seven to ten billion dollars when it's all said and done but when it is done people will be speeding by faster than a speeding bullet we got one of the most massive projects of all for you now that we are coming up on the end of our list and that would be the completely green and eco-friendly city known as mazdar city located in the united arab aramits the goal here is ambitious to build an entirely green city complete with driverless electric cars a renewable energy sector at its core and leed certified building design the uae currently produces 25 tons of pollution per capita per gear one of the highest in the entire world but we are happy to say that this city is a huge step in the right direction for the country trying to do better and they are putting their money where their mouth is as mazdar city will cost an astonishing 20 billion dollars to build yeah it's a lot but when it comes to being better to mother earth no price is too high we've seen it all from bridges to skyscrapers from stone cities to green cities humanity has produced some incredible pieces of engineering and architecture and more are to come as long as there's a drive the imagination of the human spirit knows no bounds who knows what superstructures you'll see in your lifetime you can bet we'll have them covered including their price tags right here on the richest
