I'm turning to Syracuse New York home of the mighty Orangemen to take on the six pound frittata challenge that mothers covered but before I take on an insurmountable egg scramble I'm heading to a restaurant that's as much of a Syracuse landmark as it is a hotdog Mecca I'm just north of Syracuse on the shores of Onondaga Lake at a central New York icon tides of Liverpool for over a century highs has been dishing up some of the Empire State's best Franks what is hides in the community of your hides been around for so long it's a steeple I remember being a young kid after baseball games coming here my father win or lose that was the best part you lose 10 to nothing you're still coming to Hyde's afterwards can you get anything like that anywhere else absolutely not there's nothing like the height odds are it's not just a Syracuse thing I think people from all over the country that have come here would tell you that this is the best hotdog they've ever had it all began in 1886 when the Hyde family opened a meat market and sausage factory their hot dogs were so popular they started a stand across the street in 1917 the meat market closed but the stand became a restaurant hundred years later they're still known for their to signature sausages the red German frankfurter and the white hot or Coney so what is this right here this is the mixed double its Oconee and a hot dog okay yeah the pony and the Frank are the two different kinds they have here at highs right the Franks the red right and the white is the the Cody it's almost like I'm offering you a bottle of one may interest madam in the red of the way excellent choice eager to try both I head to the kitchen to meet grill master Matt Howe tailing you were going to teach me the ways of both Frank and Coney correct indeed all right so the Frank is that what I think most people would associate with a traditional hot dog yes but it's not the same thing you'd find in the stores really so special recipe just for us Wow so this is literally a one-of-a-kind dog that you can get nowhere else in the world except for here made by a local sausage maker using a century-old recipe of beef pork and secret spices you just gotta warm up for about 2 minutes on each side and you got a perfect hot dog now these I recognized as the Franks what is this because they look like mini bratwurst those are the Kony's what is in the cony that's pork and veal and it has spices in it and the egg whites which give it the cone I'm not a veal guy but I'm gonna give this a shot for two different reasons one any sausage that gets that kind of char sign me up sigh me i'ma cut the line in fact but the egg whites actually intrigued me mmm you know what that's unlike any dog I've ever had that much flavor is usually in a heavier more oily sausage and it's surprisingly light you guys actually do put two dogs in one single roll yep Matt grills a red and a white to a crispy well-done perfection stuffed them in a single New England style bun layers on their homemade brown mustard and to my surprise I'm joined by a Syracuse basketball legend for a double-double how are you doing sir welcome to sir thank you very much listen this is this is not just some handsome devil that sat down with me this is the winningest coach in big E's history this is already been basketball coach Jim Boeheim it is an honor now I understand that you're a regular here stop by every time I go by this corner really you come by this morning you get a hot dog the first thing is how good the mustard is the Coney itself has a little bit more of a sausage flavor whereas the franc is just exactly that it's just a really solid frankfurter go on thank you
