[Music] hi everybody sean james here from my self-reliance welcome to the cabin this is a rustic log cabin with very few amenities that's the way I like it that's what I've built and if you're interested in that type of thing then maybe you will learn something from this but if you are looking for something built to national building codes this is not it and if you're looking for some permanent big home that you can accommodate your family and also not it but I think I think you'll enjoy it anyway well and if you want to see the rest of the series all the stuff I've been doing over the last year of course you can either subscribe or just go through my playlist find something you like and and follow along I post videos at least once a week appreciate your watching this video have fun and take care and I'll see you again up with a cabin next week [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you so today I'm working on a table not only have I never made a table that I can remember I never actually use mortise and tenon joints to make furniture so this is brand new to me and what it reminded me of is all of the comments I continue to get including even today I think on Instagram had some comments people just saying I wish I knew how to do what you didn't know how to do and if you've watched some of my previous videos you'll know that this is new to me too I'm learning as I go built a cabin 26 years ago but that was even more rustic than this one and that one I just really kind of hammered together so I'd learned back then and I'm still learning I'm learning how to do this one you know I've got a video and I think it might be my top video now where I talked about how you can do this too and kind of a bit of my background and why I'm no expert why I'm just you know jack-of-all-trades kind of learning like I said as I go so I was talking about how you can do this too of course nothing special about me that anybody can do this or any other project they put their mind to don't have to have gone to school you don't need years of experience to do something like this well I think one thing I didn't mention in that video is that part of its education it's a curiosity it's that drive to learn more and try out new things which of course follows up on the passion or the desire to do something if you don't have the knowledge to do it as people are are stating that they don't the knowledge to do this in today's day and age that shouldn't be a limitation you should be able to go out and educate yourself and I think and I hope that's what part of what my YouTube channel is doing here and my Instagram and Facebook feeds giving people not only inspiration and motivation but also a little bit of education on how to do some things so because I'm learning as I go on this project I'm making mistakes and I'm also doing research to figure out how to do things better now that being said there's a certain amount of this project that don't really want to have precedent I don't want to have inspiration or knowledge ahead of time because I feel like I'll kind of get swayed to do it that way my approach is to take a little bit of knowledge from here a little bit of knowledge from there combine it kind of clear my head and then approach it from my own angle now that concept I think to me is extremely important when there's something controversial and there's always more than one side to any story there's always contradictory information on any subject but what I like to do is go read a book fascinated by something I learn something from it before it becomes part of my thought be part of my personality part of my intelligence or whatever I'll read something completely opposite maybe something I don't even believe in so that I can get both sides of the stories before I formulate my own opinion of something and don't let one person who's very persuasive persuade you that their way is the only way or the right way because maybe it's not maybe they're just extra persuasive so it's mid December 2017 right now if you're watching this video fresh that's great I just wanted to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everybody or Happy Holidays if you don't celebrate Christmas it's a great time of year it's time to reflect it's time to show gratitude and you know do great things for one another and plan for the next year kind of restart get going and and make some resolutions if that if that's what you like doing but if not still a good time to reflect and a good time to plan for the upcoming year so that's what I'm doing and spent some time with my family over the next couple of weeks so I hope you guys all have a great holiday as well thanks a lot for following along watching me on my journey in 2017 I look forward to seeing you in 2018 take care [Music] you

Didn't expect to watch the whole thing when I started, but it's fascinating. With nothing but hand tools and very little talking, it's got a PrimitiveTechnology vibe and therapeutic nature to it.

If you can find the full length stuff- Dick Proenneke is incredible to watch.

What was the purpose of the hole he dug and framed in inside the cabin?

Food storage?

What effect would the charred-wood roof have?

Honest Question. So if you just picked a spot in the wilderness and built a cabin like this, are you free to stay and live there until you are forced to leave? I assume the land belongs to the government?

I don't know if he goes into it in this video, but in another video he talks about his background. It's pretty interesting. He owned a construction company (or something like that?) and it eventually went into debt by like $700,000. That's what really caused him to start thinking about being off the grid and be self reliant.
