I work in a leather shop and we had a customer who wanted bags that had these handles. Me and two other guys took all day to make 40 pairs of these. Talk about a day. Tedious, meticulous work just for handles, but does make the bag look great.

Thank you for your tutorials. I'm a leathercraft beginner and i have a lot to learn, therefore are your channel very helpful :)

You punch from both sides. Which results in a X interesting :) Or do you have inverse irons too?

hello and welcome to this new lava craft Academy tutorial today I would like to show you how to make a leather tubular handle I have made this one for a bag I am making and I still need to make a second one so it is I did to make a two-tone showing you step-by-step how I make this firstly I am going to select a nice leather area I do not want a stretchy part if it is too stretchy this is going to cause problems later [Music] now I want to use this fake suede to reinforce this area because I don't want this area to stretch this is the part that is holding the bag and as you can guess quite a lot of weight can be applied to this portion I'm not too worried about its entire area because in this area we'll have a rod we have this kind of rod in the middle to make the tubular effect and also to reinforce the handle so it's not going to stretch or oh I going to cut this straight just like - and you can apply it here and there now I'm going to take care both ends of the handle with the glue to dry for about five minutes don't lie this and now I'm going to skive by hand this area because I do not want this to mark like this so every want to Skype this down super thin to sky with just like that okay superteen okay we don't need reinforcement right there in the corners so I'm gonna remove this so okay and now we basically going to be able to trim this like so okay let's now cut the rope I'm using these four up must be around I don't know nine millimeter diameter it's not stretchy pretty hard this is what I'm looking forward I'm a can handle let's be round not stretchy and need to be quite hard if it suits too soft it feels cheap actually so I'm gonna burn the hand this is polyester so you burn that just look the threads and basically a a one deer up to stop here and finish right there when I use my skiving knife to cut it right same treatment just met this so what I want to do next is apply glue although this piece of rot and all of the handle is always applied thin layer very thin layer of glue dries faster and the bone holds better let's now take care of the road I'm gonna do one side first I'm going to take care of the other side when I apply the rub on the leather wait for five minutes okay now I want to pry this rope in the middle I I really want to be precise when I do that I want this piece of rope to be exactly in the center of the handle [Music] all right that's the way it should be fine right next step buy more glue all over the handle now we're going to take care of this tiny leather part that is actually covering the inside of the handle you can see on the finish handle we have this kind of leather lining inside of the handle because from the bag this party was gonna be attached with the stitching and the back can be seen so I want leather to be seen inside and not this really yellow reinforcement metal so it's not in the middle you see to fix that if you feel more comfortable to trace line in the middle of the handle to apply the rub that's probably a better idea doing it the way I'm doing it all right so this piece pleather I've already skived now I will show you how I hide the second one because there will be one on each side of the handle so let's dive this area about 15 millimeter to nothing [Music] [Music] I'm going to apply the thin edge on this side I'm going to put it on top of the rub slightly I'm not going too far just probably going for mini matters okay okay it's shorter here no problems anyway we're going to sky this down okay let's now trim the excess leather in there and after that we will close the handle right some cutting I'll cut the corners later I'll do that nicely just taking care of the straight line first good they're going to be a really careful it's nothing by the end and they really want boss hedges to be on the same line why it's okay so keep going like so [Music] I want it is to be aligned quite a correctly [Music] after stitching or trim the excess here but now let's try to mark the line where I'm going to stitch to do so I'm going to use bone folder and basically it's not really complicated just to put it flat on the table and to wrap the folder along the rub so I'm going to do this on both sides yeah so now I'm going to punch the holes and I'm actually going to punch each sides separately because I want to have a really nice stitching on the top of the handle and also on the bottom so I'm going to punch the leather gently not I'm not willing to go completely through the whole thickness I really want to put my freaking iron as close as possible to the robbed reinforcement and I want to hold this breaking iron perpendicular to my punching board so I'm not going through almost not completely nothing really complicated just following this line but I've just traced with my bone folder so the back is not pierced and hope you can see on the video the punching holes I'm gonna do the exact same thing on the other side now so be really careful I want the front and the bottom holes to match perfectly make sure to make sure this is matching I'm gonna use my all and do that so I know stitching line starting there and the stitching lining is it the stitching line is ending their single punch from here to there okay be careful not to go completely through otherwise you have to redo the whole handle okay gently oh by the way I'm using this lip cause a freaking errands I just made a review about you can watch it you can watch it if you want it it's all good particular Reggie of this breaking iron is you can replace that ease or sharpen that is if you want to because the the the handle has this set screw okay yes much okay I want the exact same number of stitches on both sides right and so now this is basically just hand stitching my hole is gonna help to go completely through the leather because I did punch each side separately and you can see take this hole is it matching yep it's matching with this so now it's basically sticking if you want to watch video on leather stitching invite you to watch the video of previously made check the description I'll put the link down below [Music] [Music] let's trace and trim the excess [Music] guess I'm gonna use my escaping knife to trim that amusing that but you can use anything kind of nice you like I like to use my escaping knife because it is very steady this is I will say the tricky part you really need to be perpendicular to your cutting surface [Music] okay just a little bit minute here I'm gonna push hard enough okay all right so we're gonna check both sides side look brave pretty good and the other site it's okay it's okay it's not perfect that's quite okay think here it's not really straightening so go back see you can go back very once [Music] and cut a little bit the extra No that's right so good now might do handle and I will now be able to complete to complete my little bag right thanks for watching please comment like and subscribe don't forget to visit our website am leathercraft comm we are making acrylic PDF and custom 8 stamps so thanks for watching and see you later [Music]
