welcome back to my garage it's fantastic to have you here today today we're going to be building a $1,000 knife with nothing but some pretty basic hand tools this is going to be a more complicated continuation of that last video that we did which was building a knife with nothing but 120 dollars of tools from the hardware store we're gonna start off today by forging the blade we're gonna be using a little bit more complicated tools this time I've got a forge and anvil an angle grinder and a drill press and a lot of hand files a lot of sandpaper so we're gonna start off by forging out a blade from 1075 high carbon steel into the shape that we want it's gonna be a hidden Tang kind of EDC style knife should be pretty sweet Before we jump in let's thank today's sponsor today's sponsor is non VPN which is a virtual private network service designed to keep you safe while is that you're browsing the Internet and give you a little extra independence and perhaps anonymity also you can get started with 70% off a three-year plan that's just three dollars and forty nine cents a month by going to Noor VPN comm ford slash forge and he has got an extra month for free using our code forge a check out thank in an order for sponsoring this a huge thank you to will for this awesome video let's jump back to him here's what we got for you today gonna be building this guy starting off by forging out the blade okay so I'm going to start off but just waxing this thing - always way too wide for what we need right now it's gonna thin it out [Music] I just took this piece of scrap steel here and I just made a couple Sharpie marks on it with the length from here to here being the length of the blade the length of the ricasso and the length of the Tang I also came on here and made a mark for the widest part of the blade how wide it needs to be and I'm going to over forge the dimensions just a little bit so I have something to work down into [Music] just doing the final cleanup on the profile and the bevels it's pretty small knife so is pretty easy to forge just make sure everything's nice and crispy clean ready for me to come back in with an angle grinder and have minimal work to do with that and with the hand files to get the shape that I want [Music] the exciting part is over the forging is finished and done with it's looking at pretty dang awesome right now I'm pretty stoked about how it came out it's pretty thin which is a good thing means we're not gonna have to remove a ton of material on the blade which is nice what you don't have a belt grinder to work with it's now time to move on to shaping everything grinding off all of this hard Forge scale if I can take care of the rest with hand files I'm also quickly going to use a trick that I learned from my friend Niels Vandenberg which is to use tracing paper I'd never used tracing paper in knives before but let me tell you what it works out splendidly when you need to be making some specific shapes on things and you don't want to have to cut out your original drawing [Music] well it's looking a little rough around the edges right now but a little time behind some files we'll have that taken care of any jiffy I'm gonna start off by Reese crabbing my line around there and then getting that profile dialed in [Music] [Music] so we got a profile pretty well now starting to move on to servicing off those flats trying to get everything nice and flat along the tang and along the ricasso along the back of it so we can come in and have a plate of reference when we file in those bevels [Music] that was a lot of fun filing bevels is actually a pretty good time I had a little bit more fun on this one that I did on the last one simply I think because I had a bench vise to work with that makes a whole lot of difference being able to clamp down your work properly less vibrations less screeching more power into the cut it's awesome [Music] [Music] [Music] Wow okay got the blade hands in it it's looking pretty nice I'm gonna flip over and do the other side now and when that's done we're gonna be ready for heat treat [Music] now that the hand sanding is finished already for the heat treat for this what we're gonna do is just use a torch that same quartz that they used on the last one it's a map gas canister with a Burton's O Matic TS 8000 head on it plenty hot enough for something like this we've got a nice thin edge nice and clip I want that clip and that edge to be hardened to both but I'm just gonna heat those up with a torch and then quench it in some parks 50 quench oil we got my Magna right here so I can test to see if it's above critical temperature or not I turned off one of the lights so it's a little bit darker so we'll see the color a little bit better [Applause] one all right oh yeah you guys can see pretty clearly on there the hardening line so all of this will be a little bit softer and that's totally cool that's just fine we don't need that to be hard it's actually probably better if that stops the blade and tang area has some malleability but that's looking good it's time to temper it now and then let it cool down a little bit more in the oil though the knife is in the tempering oven getting a little bit softer when the new two hour and 45 minute long cycles at 400 degrees for that we're back outside ready to light up the forge and throw this chunk of wrought iron in there to forge ourselves out the guard while the blade is tempering [Music] [Music] so we ran into some issues this stuff didn't like being forged useless but I have a contingency plan a different piece of wrought iron that is the right thickness already you can see it is the right width and I'll just have to cut out that top shape that I want on there I can do that very simply with my good friend the sharpie now I can go take this outside hit it with the angle grinder blast that thing off there and get to work well I started cutting off that little bit too to isolate the guard lug from the main body of it and right as that was happening the blade finished tempering so I grabbed it out there's actually perfect timing because it means that now I can play around with the tank and get that ready for the guard to be fit up on it [Music] [Music] okay so I got the blade hand sanded got all of that oxide off from the heat treat I then fit up the guard but I ran into an issue as you guys can see the top of the fit up actually looks really nice it's almost there a little bit of gap is left but that's nothing that we can't take care of the issue is if the ricasso doesn't line up with the bottom of the guard the guard is too thin for that and that just means that aesthetically there would be a big catch for the eye so my solution is going to be chopping off the bottom part of this guard bringing it down and then adding in another spacer and I'm not quite sure what I want that material to be yet but it means that I'll be able to make it so that that top of the handle has a nice aesthetic flow to it rather than having a catch of the eye I'm gonna start off this fix by taking the hacksaw and just chopping off the bottom of that guard before I try flattening it down with files in sandpaper decided to play around with a pencil and paper before than any actual cutting and I'm glad that I did I'm gonna try to do a curved fit up on this instead it's kind of reminiscing on my friend Curt Holland's style who was just here visiting and if it doesn't work out we can always just flatten it off and do a flat fit up anyway [Music] we're gonna kick things off today by starting on the handle for the knife that's going to start off by me just cutting a block out of a piece of wood that I've been saving for about two and a half years now this is the piece of wood that I'm talking about the piece of cocobolo that I found locally in a hardware store surprisingly enough I've never seen a piece of cocobolo that has curl to it before and that's that kind of wavy pattern that you see in the wood we're going to start off by figuring out exactly where on this piece of wood we want to use and then we'll cut out a block from there [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay I got the handle block rough shaped a little of filing on it just to even things out a little bit and then I drilled the hole for the tang now obviously the Tang is not gonna fit in there with just this hole fortunately I've got myself a black dragon Forge handle brooch which fits right on in there gonna make it very easy to fit up this handle these aren't available through the Alex Steel Co Alex steel shop comm go check them out they are an incredibly useful tool for fitting up handles in hidden Tang knives so definitely worth picking up I'm gonna go ahead and start fitting up this tang now I'm gonna have to at some point carve out that v-shape that's in there so the guard will fit up when I start getting a little bit closer in let's go ahead and get this Tang fit up into the handle [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so as I've been trying to spit up I've decided I'm going to shape the guard to its close to its final shape just that we have the least amount of the material as possible that needs to be contacting I'm not going to shape the handle yet it's getting there but I just want to make it so that I'm making this job as easy as possible for myself [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] standing buddy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] standing buddy [Applause] the handle is looking really really good I've got the whole thing sanded to 1500 grit I tuned in those facets so the lines that run down the sides are nice and even and straight the facets on the guard are looking really nice the fit up is swell all the way around and I've got that little bit of standoff on the handle so it's slightly proud of the guard which means that when we're ready for it I'll round that off just a tiny bit and I'll have this nice heirloom fit which flows really nicely with the piece what I'm gonna do now is I'm gonna take the guard off its sanded to 400 grit all the way around and I'm gonna throw it into some ferric chloride for a deep edge this is wrought iron which has a nice wood grain texture to it and so when I do a deep etch on it you'll it'll bring out that pattern and it just looks really really cool while that is sitting in the etch I'm going to refinish the blade at 600 grit and carve in some jimping just a little something for the thumb to catch on on the spine of the knife [Music] oK we've got it all set and ready for the glue up and I've carved the notches into the tank for the epoxy to sit in since we're not using a paint it's uber important that we get a good epoxy hold on this so it's time now to mix up our epoxy get it in there and then clamp it really tight I'm getting the jitters I'm excited this is gonna be so cool when it's done let's do it [Music] well guys this has just been an absolute blast to make it was pretty frustrating to not be in the shop full of you know fancy equipment and tools and stuff like that that I'm used to it definitely slowed things down a bit but it was all the more satisfying to finish it up in the end and to have a nice clean finished knife I think it's cool just to go to show that you really don't need all that fancy equipment you can you can make do with some pretty basic tools and not a whole lot of space either so I want to thank you guys for following along before I end it let's think today's sponsor will has done an incredible job on this knife and this is so inspiring to see what you can do with basic tools hope you guys get out there and do it now this is all possible because of our sponsors and today our sponsor is Nord VPN a virtual private network service designed to keep you safe while it is the browsing the internet the way they do this is unlike when you usually browse the Internet where you just communicate directly with the website they have thousands of servers well over 5,000 servers in over 60 countries around the world and these servers act as an intermediary between you and the websites you browse and they encrypt the data that goes between you and servers it means you're far less liable to get hacked and get your data compromised but it also means you have the flexibility of being able to choose wherever in the world you want the websites your browsing to think you're browsing from which can be incredibly useful right now say you're stuck at home hopefully just having to battle a boredom and nothing more serious and you want to stream a video that's only available in a different country well Nord has an app for iOS Android and PC and you can very simply just swipe around and choose to browse from a different country switching to the United Kingdom and there we go connected there's unlimited bandwidth it's risk free there's a 30-day money-back guarantee even what's in China bypassing the Great Firewall you can get started right now by going to Nord VPN calm food slash forge to get 70% off a three-year plan and when you use code forge a check out you can extra month for free we're very grateful to Nord for sponsoring this video we hope that you're all healthy and staying well big thank you to will for making this awesome video see you all very soon bye bye
