Today I will be making mamezara (small plates.) I won’t be mixing my own clay this time, instead I will use store bought clay as is. I shape the clay into a cube first. I use these guides to cut the clay evenly. Today I am using 7mm (1/4 inch) guides. I use the wire cutter from back to front. You can get nice, even cuts - - by making sure the wire cutter is pressed down firmly against the guides I discard the first slice - -and then peel off the others one by one and place them on a plank. Then I let them dry for about twelve hours. If the clay is too dry it can crack more easily. I will be using these tools from now on. First I prepare the wooden mold. I cover it with a piece of cloth and make sure it is tight. I also place a plastic sheet between the clay and the work table to make sure it doesn’t stick. I use this roller to make the clay flat and even. I also use a plastic rib to remove any wrinkles. Then I place the mold on the clay and turn it over. I use my fingers to press the clay to the mold. I add a grid of shallow grooves at the bottom. This is to prevent deformations. I use a bow to remove the excess clay from each side of the plate. It is easy to remove the mold thanks to the cloth. I will now stamp the inside of the plate with my inka. I will use four different sizes of inka stamps. I start with the biggest one, the move onto the smaller ones. Next I will make a plate with inlays on the rim. I soften the edges with my finger. I will now let them dry before bisque firing them for 9hours. I apply a water repellent solution to the bottom of the plate. It takes about 5 minutes to dry. Next I apply white slip. I use a wet sponge to remove the excess slip. I talk in more detail about this sponge zogan technique in another video. Then, I will glaze the plates. I remove the excess glaze on this sponge. I use a different, black glaze for the other plates. The water repellent at the bottom of the plate will also repel the glaze. I am getting the kiln ready for firing. I set the temperature and start the firing. This is reduction firing. In total I will fire for 14 hours. The plates are still warm when I remove them from the kiln - - so I wear gloves. They look exactly like I wanted. I will now overglaze the black plates. This is called "uwa-e zogan." I would like to make another video on this technique later. Once I apply the overglaze, I let it dry. This makes the patterns stand out more. Finally I fire once more at around 850°C (1562°F.) for 9hours. Here are the final products. Thank you for watching.
