I promise that I am not going to start making videos based off of mean comments but I got a pretty good one it was about that video that I released a while back about amateurism and music by the way I have a new camera that follows me around check this out oh is it following me is it following me am I coming back I'm coming back pretty cool the video was about amateurism and music so I thought it would be clever to pick a childlike sounding track a question for my professional music making followers what is one thing that you commonly hear from new composers that make their music sound amateurish but the comment I got from this particular person I'll mark off their name it's interesting to intro this video with terrible stale background music I replied with thanks and by the way that's the person's name I'm marking out not I didn't call him anything and he wrote back did you make this music or is it just bad stock royalty-free music you found and you know what I did not make this music my friend Peter wrote this music so I gave him a call hey Peter I've got some difficult news to share with you unfortunately a guy on the internet thinks that your music is terrible stale bad stock royalty free music sorry to be the one to break it to you I've heard worse actually seeing that song being played while you were talking about what you were talking about I thought was perfect I loved it not just because it was my song You came to me and you said I'm thinking about putting together an album that's kind of like innocent childlike simple sounding music I was like sweet that sounds great grab the banjo grab the Glockenspiel grab the ukulele keep it simple I think there was another song on that album that I remember challenging myself I'm just going to use one chord for this whole song and I have one chord the whole time in the melody you know when it went around it when I first read the comment of course I was uh Angry and then when I reread it I was like no this is perfect [Music] from time to time I'll do a little research I'll lay on the sofa and watch the types of channels that feature production music and I find myself going from show to show to show and oftentimes I hear music that I really don't want to write but I enjoy storytelling and there are certain types of stories that seem to use certain types of music it wouldn't be the best decision for me to avoid learning how to write that type of music with those type of styles those type of feelings and those type of emotions let me play you a few stems from Peter's track the piano the lead instruments banjo acoustic guitars [Music] oh we have some percussion here strings [Music] Pizzicato sound is very common for comedy dramedies but when you layer it with other instrumentation that sounds childlike and is also plucked it's the same type of comedic feeling but it's different I think we all as artists have that ego maybe we picked up the instrument because we wanted to have more attention on ourselves maybe what we want to be good at something we wanted to you know all these different reasons that the ego is involved but the art is still there for me it was kind of putting my guitar on the shelf and saying it's not time to shred right now for this like quiet walk on the beach album I'm making it's time to do very delicate guitar playing you have to continually be aware of those constraints around you and kind of open yourselves up to the idea that like oh this is kind of bigger than me I was the type of guitar player who always played the same you know E minor to C to D and then E minor again and then maybe an A Minor but then I'd go back to E minor I was big on the minor chords and it took me a while to realize that if I was going to make it in this business I had to develop my skills further than the 65 beats per minute uh acoustic finger style guitar ballots the purpose of this video is not to convince you to write silly childlike songs but when I go to conferences or hear the important people in this business talk they always say that for new composers don't try to be the Jack of all trades don't try to do everything and I somewhat agree with that I mean you've really got to do a lot more than you might think but I do think it's important to focus in on what you're good at but don't just provide what you're good at in the same emotions the emotions and the feelings and the way that it fits in with the stories that are being written well that's what really matters air conditioner it's the upstairs I'm just gonna roll with it who cares if there's an air conditioner in the background or I'll probably run it through RX and spend 30 minutes doing that okay back to my point yes you can get a certain emotion out of a giant Symphony that you can't get out of a ukulele but you can learn to play whatever instrument you have in different styles and different feelings but I think that we all too often pick up our instruments and start playing what we want to hear and what sounds good in our room to our ears and in that moment and we don't think about how it's being used in the end and when we turn on the television in their show after show after show of music that we either don't feel like we're capable of riding or we don't want to write and then we complain about not having success well maybe there's a connection there you know fortunately since I don't have a history of being cool I've never Associated my music with being cool I've always written what I liked or the kind of music that I enjoyed and it was never mainstream pop whatever that even means it didn't hurt my pride or ego in any way when I started riding in different styles that I was told fortunately I was told by someone in the business that knows this type of thing that if I wrote in certain Styles and in certain moods again same words over and over again that I might have more success so let me take you and show you some of the tracks that have done pretty well for me over the years that are not necessarily the types of tracks that I would have written had I not been told that I needed to I'm going to give you quick Snippets of some of my better performing tracks [Music] myself foreign s are totally unique to my situation if you write the exact same track they might not be successful for you at all and you might write super dark Moody tracks and put them into place and they're very successful so very anecdotal vary just for me but I have to go pretty far down my list before I find tracks that aren't positive Happy Shiny fun thanks to Peter for being a good sport and look I don't claim to be the best music picker best music supervisor in the planet I probably could have chosen a more appropriate track I don't know I could have gone super angry sad thoughtful explosive [Music] anyways I'm looking to Peter's music below he's got his own personal music he's in a band called Western and Maori all worth your time this is where a good YouTuber will talk about another video that would keep you on the platform longer and increase my watch time but I don't know which one to send you to so here's what I'd like you to do tell a friend about me I'd love for you to subscribe and like and all that stuff too but perhaps there's somebody that is learning how to write music in the computer or wants to or whatever just shoot them an email send them a tweet take care [Music]
