put this idea to make a reversible table runner I decided to do it with these Fabrics when I saw that these jelly roll strip sets were on clearance at JoAnn Fabrics so I paid 6.97 a piece for these I thought I'd make a reversible table runner that is kind of for the summer with these watermelon prints and this one that's kind of like the early fall in late August early September that time of year that way I can flip it over when I decide to and change the whole atmosphere of my kitchen or wherever I put it I'm not sure where I'll put it but we'll figure that out these strip sets by the way are 20 strips five designs and four of each design and if my calculations are right I think we can make two table runners two reversible table runners for a total of fourteen dollars that may not be right is that right we'll find out let's get started making a reversible table runner something I forgot to mention in the introduction and when I was editing I realized it you can use any Fabrics you don't have to use these jelly rolls in fact later in this video I will show you how I made one using scraps let's take a peek at the Fabrics that I am going to use for the sample during this tutorial so let's open these up and see what we have for Fabrics oh okay these are pretty all right we'll start with the watermelon one so we have four of this really cute waterbound print oh this is really neat too four of those for one that seeds four of the stripe and then four of the watermelon oh my goodness I love them all they are so so pretty this is gonna make a great table runner all right I'm gonna stack those up now let's look at the other one open this up oh I like it is it bees it is bees oh my goodness all right so we have looks like four of these these aren't as well behaved maybe it's because I don't have it flipped over let's do that okay so they're like a honeycomb I like that this is really pretty oh there's a nice Gray okay and then there's one that says Queen and then there's another B fabric that's really cute too oh my goodness these are gonna be great you also need batting a little bit bigger than the size you want to end up with I'm making one that is 14 inches wide and 30 inches long so I made it just a smidge bigger you will be cutting this down after you make it so just keep that in mind when you're deciding on the size you want to make also I starched my batting I wanted something with a little bit more body I never start batting before ever I'm so glad I did it works out so well wait do you see where do you see how it works when you start batting and it is a little stiffer too next you're going to cut your strips one inch longer than the width of your batting so for me this is a 14 inch width batting I'm going to cut my strips down to 15 inches in length and it's going to give me a little wiggle room when we use this technique because there are 20 in five different designs I'm going to cut 20 pieces that measures 15 inches long and I have them all laid out here on my trays ready to go cut to the length that I need you're also going to want to think about the binding you're going to use because you want it to complement both sides since it's reversible you're going to see that binding on each side of this table runner so for this one I chose black fabric because there's black in each of these it may be if you're doing say a fall and Christmas you might want to use a green for your binding but keep that in mind when you're starting to plan your project so to make this table runner we're going to use the Stitch and flip method and we're going to be doing quilt as you go let's get started building this before we start working with these strips we are going to talk a little bit about the batting so I'm going to move this aside and we're going to take our batting and again this was starched and I starched it and let it dry you're going to fold the batting in half lengthwise and it does not have to be perfect and you're just going to finger press the middle and again it doesn't have to be exact but you just want to be able to see the line that is the middle part once we have that done I'm just going to set it aside carefully so I don't lose that line you can also use a pen to mark that if you want next we're going to start planning both sides of our table runner now I like to do it randomly but I know there's lots of people out there that love to have some sort of order so you can do it in the order and keep that order up if you'd like to so maybe a light dark light dark something like that looks really nice but this is completely up to you I like to do it randomly just because I like the look of it but I understand that not everybody's like that so just decide what your Center one is going to be I like to start in the center because I think it evens everything out when you're using batting but you can start at one end it just kind of sometimes gets a little wonkier is that a word I think so it gets a little weird and it's harder to trim up so I like to start in the middle so I'm going to start with this watermelon in the middle and then I'm going to look at these and do the same thing decide what I want to start with in the middle now with this set I noticed there were two that are similar right here and you can see they're kind of this but not really so I really don't want those two together maybe something I don't know like this or I don't know I'm just gonna always make sure that those aren't right next to each other I think I'm gonna pick this one for my middle and I'm going to set these aside for right now so we're going to take one strip of whatever we're deciding for the middle of each set so each side of our table runner I'm going to take those two I'm going to set the others aside for right now next we're going to take our batting you can see my line my crease right here and I'm going to lay one of these here just like that and what's really nice about the starch batting is it kind of sticks Isn't that cool next we're going to just take a couple pins and put in this to hold it still even though it does kind of stick and notice I'm placing this right side up and then take this whole thing flip it over I can see my ends here of my fabric I'm just going to line this one up also right sides up place that on there it doesn't have to be super straight because we're going to be making this not straight on purpose and I'm just going to put some pins in be careful of the pins on the other side you also want to make sure you're putting the pins in the middle because we're going to stitch on both sides of this to hold it in place just like that and all I'm going to do is go to the machine Stitch down both sides I'm using a neutral thread I'm actually using gray because it's going to go with both of these that's another thing you want to think about is the color of thread you use because you will see it in quilting and you'll see it on the piece side too so both sides are going to have the same thread again just like The Binding you're going to make sure it matches it's using a walking foot and I'm tacking this down I'm going to go in quarter inch but you don't have to and my Stitch length is I'm going to take it down to two and just Stitch this on [Applause] and I like to do both sides because we're going to build both sides as we build this table runner [Applause] okay you can see I have both sides are nice and secure on here I'm going to take out my pins from both sides and move on to our next step okay now that we have the first piece on both sides and you can see it here it is time to have some fun with this okay we're going to take our watermelon Fabrics and pick one of these I think I'm going to do this one for our next piece and what I'm going to do is lay this on right sides together and I'm going to purposely make it a little wonky a little off-center and I'm going to stitch right down this Edge I'm not placing another one on the other side yet I did try it when I was creating this pattern to begin with and trust me it just does not work out I'm going to go to the machine and just sew right down that now notice I made sure that the whole strip is on this fabric so I don't have any gaps our next step is to take this and just finger press it open like that and I like to use my thumb you can also press it with the iron if you want to and you can see when we stitch this on it quilted on this side and you know what I am going to press this with the iron activates that starch a little bit so it kind of sticks to it it's really great my next step is to stitch on this side of the watermelon I think I'm going to take this one and I'm just going to purposely make it a little wonky you can flip it over to see how you like it just make sure your whole seam right here is within that other piece so your seam allowance will accommodate it and I'm going to stitch that down too [Applause] okay now that that's stitched on I'm going to do the same thing I'm going to just finger press it take my iron and press it nicely so it's nice and crisp and then what I like to do is flip the whole thing over and now we're going to add the pieces to this side let's see what do I want to do I think I'm going to do one of the white and I'm going to stitch that on and I'm going to do the same thing press that and take another one let's do this gray and I'm going to lay it uh like that I think and Stitch this on and we just press that and then flip it over you can see some of the quilting lines turning out so cool and you just keep on building so let's do the green on this side yeah I think I like that and we'll do the pink watermelon seeds on this side I'm just going to keep on going after I sew two on one side I flip it over and sew two on the other side and you just keep going and going and going again you're purposely not making these straight because trust me over time it's going to get wonky so we might as well make it wonky on purpose and have some fun with it I'm going to keep sewing these on and I'll be back when I have the whole thing together and show you our next step I have all the pieces on look at the other side isn't it cute I'm loving how this turned out I just have to add the end pieces which I want to show you how I do that it's almost finished this looks like magical when you trim up these sides because it all like comes together and looks really great but still even like this I love it I love how it's turning out before I show you how to add those ends I am going to show you what I made with scraps this is a Christmas and fall so this side is the fall side isn't this pretty this is all scraps left over from my budget friendly quilt that I made I just picked five of the jelly roll strips that kind of coordinated I made sure I had some light Starks and mediums and I sewed them together randomly just like I did with this one and then the other side is uh leftover from a Christmas Fat Quarter bundle that I had so you can use things that coordinate you can use things from your scraps whatever you'd like but let's finish this one up the next step we're going to do is add the ends I think I'm going to use this watermelon print on this end and again I'm just going to angle it but I want to make sure when I flip it it's going to cover that edge so I'm going to go ahead and sew this one on just like that and do the same on this side and I think I'm going to use let me see do I want the watermelon watermelon would be nice I think I'm actually going to go with this one all right so I'm gonna go do that now and I'll show you the other side so these are on so I'm just going to do exactly what I did before press these and then I'm going to flip it over and do the same thing on the other side to finish this up so I'm going to add a strip here on this end and one on this end to finish up this table runner so let's see I think I'll pick this one on this end and maybe this one on this end okay these are done again press and look at that so my next step is to go through and just add some more quilting lines so you can see it is quilted on both sides because we did the Stitch and flip method but I like to add a few more lines you do not have to do this also there is some puckering you can see but this is going to all quilt out or steam out even if I take the iron to it you can see it go away but adding more quilting lines will help with that so I'm going to go do that now just add some more and meet you back here it's all quilted both sides of course because you're quilting through both sides and I just use straight lines to do this and I made them on wonky angles to go along with the whole table runner theme next we're going to trim it down and this is when it really comes to life because right now it looks a little messy when we trim it down and then bind it oh my goodness it looks so pretty here's our table runner and we're going to trim up the edges now so I'm just going to lay it on my matte kind of straightish this is super forgiving because of all of the wonky angles get it how you like it and then trim it up and try to get to closest to the edges I can while including that batting so making sure that I'm not taking too much of that batting off okay I like that oh look at that it's already coming together I'm just gonna put this down here and line this up and I'm using my ruler not the lines on the mat at least for this first cut oh my goodness it's so pretty and now I'm gonna go in and use the mat to straighten it up and actually because I want to get this nice and straight I'm going to use a couple rulers to do that put another ruler over here just to ensure that's straight cut it down okay so now that I know that the sides are straight I can square up the ends I'm just going to line my ruler up making sure it's straight on this side and on this side it is a game over to the edge of that batting and cut then I'm going to do the same on the other side line it up make sure it's nice and square and cut and you can see I just clipped a little tiny bit of that batting but we made it over size on purpose so that's not a big deal and now look it's all done oh my goodness I love it it's so cute look at the other side I love it and now I could even make some placemats out of this I can make a really long piece and cut it up you could do coasters you could do smaller table runners skinnier whatever but this is a great base it is a very quick project and fun to do so next I'm going to bind it and I already cut my binding strips these are two inches wide move this so you can see I only needed three of them so three by the width of the fabric and I'm going to sew these together do a traditional binding like I would for any other quilt I did only cut these like I said to two inches because this is super thin it's only one piece of batting very thin piece of batting and that's all I'm going to need but use whatever method you like for binding for me I'm going to just do a traditional binding and put this on and meet you back here I am loving how this turned out I love that I have the summer on this side and then that late summer early fall on this side I can just flip it right over let me know in the comments which holidays or Seasons or events you're going to try this with because I think it it just lends itself to all kinds of different things I can just see it for you know spring and Easter I can see it for winter like blues and stuff like that and then Valentine's Day or just the possibilities are endless these would also be great for craft fairs it doesn't take long to make one they're very low stress and just a lot of fun I hope you enjoyed this tutorial as always please let me know if you have any questions about this I'm happy to help and I'm gonna get busy making a couple more of these because they are so much fun I hope you have a wonderful day I hope you take some time to sew and I'll see you real soon bye
